This Super Simple Trick Will Curb Your Sugar Cravings

For many of us, 2017 was a doozy, but we here at Brit + Co are ready to hit refresh in 2018! Follow our Hit Refresh series through January for new ideas, hacks, and skills that will help you achieve (and maintain!) those New Year’s resolutions.

New year, new you — or something? Whether you’re all about sticking to traditional resolutions or you’ve taken an alternative resolution approach this year, the yearly calendar turnover is a chance to refresh. We set financial goals, make romantic resolutions, focus on fitness — and often give in to a diet trend (or two). We’re not knocking diets here, but (spoiler) we’ve found that maintaining consistent, realistic eating patterns is the best way to healthy (vegan lunch meet homemade marshmallows).

And Paddy Spence, CEO of Zevia, is on board the “it’s all about balance” train. Spence has been in the natural food industry for over 25 years and cut added sugar out of his own diet 17 years ago. To help his family keep the sugar demons at bay, he came up with a “sugar budget” as a way to regulate sweet “overspending.” Below, he fills us in on how to start our own sugar budgets, and tells us the tricky ways added sugar sneaks into our systems.

Sugar budget basics

First, Spence recommends keeping a food journal during your first week of sugar budgeting. It’s a simple way to see exactly where you’re getting most of your sugar and pinpoint habits that may lead to sugary snacking through the day. Spence says that “beverages are the first place people should look to when it comes to cutting sugar, because on average, 47 percent of Americans’ added sugar intake comes from beverages. In fact, drinking just one sugary soda per day adds up to 32 pounds of sugar per year!”

In his family, he explains, “We use a budget of 50 grams of sugar per day to “spend” however you like. That’s 10 percent of a 2000-calorie-a-day diet, and sugar is four calories per gram, meaning you limit your intake to 200 calories from sugar per day.” You can tailor this budget to your own dietary needs and caloric intake, which a certified dietitian can help you figure out. Of course, there will be days you’ll be under and others you’ll go over, like with “any budget you’re striving to maintain,” but if you’re accounting for these totals, no worries.

Take your cues from the kids

Spence’s six and eight-year-old daughters have become “sugar detectives,” reading labels at the grocery store with their parents. He explains that they’ll compare, say, a juice box to applesauce squeeze snacks or ice cream and determine where they want to spend their budget. No surprise — the ice cream usually wins, but “it empowers them to make choices,” Spence explains, and has even cut down on their sugar cravings altogether.

A sugar budget isn’t about denying yourself food that make you happy — it’s just a matter of prioritizing which of those treats you want most. And right now we want stuffed cookies.

Give me some sugar

Not all sugar is created equal, and Spence reminds us, “Even though they add to your sugar budget, whole fruits offer fiber and other good-for-you ingredients, such as vitamins that actually slow the absorption of sugar. Fruit juice and dried fruit, on the other hand, are sugar-concentrated versions of the real thing.”

Additionally, he suggests combating your sugar cravings by reaching for high protein snacks. He says his family “loves turkey jerky or stevia-sweetened Greek yogurt because it fills you up without the eventual energy crash.”

3 Secret Sugar Offenders

1. Condiments: “There’s a reason kids love ketchup — it’s one of the sugariest condiments, and barbecue sauce is just as bad. But perhaps the sneakiest of the lot, however, is salad dressing — especially fat-free varieties. The best way to control sugar content is to make your own dressing.” No problem there — we have so many homemade salad dressing recipes we love.

2. Coated Snacks: “Honey-roasted nuts, flavored jerky, and yogurt-covered pretzels often run neck-and-neck with candy bars for sugar content. Opt for the naked versions,” instead.

3. Cereal: Yes, even granola. Spence reminds that a cereal doesn’t have to be frosted or chocolate-flavored to be sugary, and warns not to be “fooled by seemingly healthy options.” Our advice? Read the label before buying. Or, you know, make your own!

If you’re a pasta lover, it’s a great time to be alive. The pasta aisle is filled with alternatives to traditional semolina and whole-wheat varieties, from red lentil penne to edamame spaghetti. In addition to being gluten-free, these pastas are also surprisingly high in protein, making your quick pasta dinner of spaghetti and marinara or vegan mac and cheese a bit more filling (and well-balanced).

Aside from homemade pasta, these bean and legume pastas are pretty much the greatest thing ever. They cook quickly and eliminate the need to prep a separate protein to go with your meal, meaning they’re perfect for 15-minute dinner recipes.

Some are easier to cook than others (and, frankly, a couple of them don’t taste great), so we’re sharing cooking tips for the most popular types of bean pastas, along with simple ideas for dinners that can be on the table in under 30 minutes.

Why We Like It: This is, hands-down, the best legume pasta out there. The Trader Joe’s version has quickly become a best-seller, and for good reason. There’s no bean-y flavor, it cooks to a perfect al dente texture, and it pairs well with both creamy and tomato sauces. Red lentil pasta stays firm even after being refrigerated, so you’ll have no more mushy leftovers! Plus, it boasts 13 grams of protein per serving.

Cooking Tip: Use this one for your baked pasta dishes, like baked ziti. On busy nights, simply toss with jarred sauce and Parmesan cheese. (If you have a few extra minutes, sauté fresh garlic in a bit of olive oil, along with oregano, fennel seeds, and crushed red pepper to make your store-bought sauce feel fancier.)

Pair It With: Your favorite pasta sauce. The short pasta can handle chunky sauces, and it soaks up thin and creamy sauces too. There’s no sauce that red lentil pasta can’t handle!

Why We Like It: Like the red lentil pasta above, these lentil elbows have a neutral flavor and cook up without much guesswork on the timing. (We’ve tried a few brands.) They’re also the perfect swap in your favorite mac and cheese recipe. Each serving contains a whopping 20 grams of protein.

Cooking Tip: Use a thick or darker sauce to fool picky eaters and mask the slight green color. (Try pesto!)

Pair It With: Toss hot pasta with two cloves of minced garlic, plus plenty of olive oil or butter, and Parmesan for a quick weeknight dinner. Garnish with black pepper and crushed red pepper.

Why We Like It:Chickpea pasta is one of the best protein pastas. This pasta looks and tastes surprisingly like the real deal, with a bit more texture (like a whole-wheat pasta). It cooks quickly and doesn’t fall apart if you forget to set a timer and let it go a couple of extra minutes. (It’s worth buying in bulk!) Also, did you see the 20 grams of protein per serving?

Cooking Tip: Garbanzo bean pasta is tasty chilled too, so use it in your favorite pasta salad recipes. Make a quick lunch by mixing chickpea shells with hummus, chopped olives, and roasted red peppers. Serve over arugula.

Pair It With: Toss hot pasta with tahini (thinned with water and lemon juice), then salt to taste. Serve with steamed broccoli.

Why We Like It: You don’t need to parboil these noodles, and they cook up perfectly. They’re a dream come true with 11 grams of protein per serving. (While you can find plenty of no-cook wheat lasagna noodles, the protein content in this variety keeps your Sunday supper from putting you into a carb coma.)

Cooking Tip: Keep a box of these awesome noodles on hand for all your lasagna cravings. Get creative by turning other favorite pasta dishes into layered feasts. Try roasted butternut squash rings with ricotta, gorgonzola, dried cranberries, and sage, then top with a simple tomato or Alfredo sauce (seasoned with rosemary and black pepper).

Why We Like It: This pasta cooks quickly and is a tasty alternative to rice when stir-fry is on the menu.

Cooking Tip: Set a timer, and don’t walk away. Any thin, long legume pasta like this one needs to be stirred often and not overcooked. If you overcook it, you’ll end up with a congealed blob.

Trader Joe’s Black Bean Rotini

Why We Like It: Unfortunately, we don’t, even with its 14 grams of protein per serving. Every brand we’ve tried needs far longer than the recommended cook time to reach al dente, and we experienced some, um, bean-y side effects every time we ate this one. Since black beans take longer to cook from dried than the other legumes listed here, we suspect that’s why black bean rotini was a fail. Black bean spaghetti did fare slightly better, but it’s still not worth the price.

Cooking Tip: Skip this one, or stock up on the Beano.

Essentially an iced white chocolate mocha made with blonde espresso topped with matcha cold foam and brown butter sprinkles, one Starbucks barista revealeda tasty (and festive!) new way to enjoy the chain’s offerings in lieu of St Paddy’s: the Pot Of Gold!

The spirited drink starts with 4 pumps of white mocha sauce, which is then combined with 2 blonde espresso shots. Starbucks’ blonde espresso has a smoother effect than their traditional shots, so expect this sip to bring on the sweetness!

From there, you can order the drink with your choice of milk – and it’s a total bonus that Starbucks is no longer charging extra for alternative milks like oat, almond, coconut, and soy milk!

The next step is to order the drink with the chain’s vanilla cold foam, adding 2 scoops of matcha powder in the process.

Note: this secret menu item was shared before Starbucks reformulated their matcha powderto be unsweetened, but the cold foam should still have some sweetness, thanks to the vanilla.

Finally, the Pot Of Gold matcha drink is complete, boasting a satisfying layer of green on top of a golden latte. The barista who came up with the drink topped their bev with Starbucks’ brown butter sprinkles, which is in cafes for a limited time alongside their pistachio-flavored coffees.

If your local Starbucks is out of the brown butter sprinkles, a dusting of cinnamon or chocolate curls could also be so tasty!

With this secret menu hack, you’ll be sipping your way through a delightful sweetness and plenty of caffeine from both the matcha powder and espresso shots. If you prefer to have less jitters in your drink, you could easily order it ‘half-caff’ or with decaf espresso shots.

For quick reference, here’s how to order the Pot Of Gold drink. Ask for:

  • A grande iced latte
  • With 2 blonde espresso shots (or your preference for ‘half-caff’ or decaf)
  • With your choice of milk
  • Topped with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam with 2 scoops of matcha powder
