14 Exotic Summer Vacation Rentals You Won’t Believe Are Affordable

When you find yourself daydreaming of the perfect summer vacation, what do you picture? An oceanfront view, rolling green hills in the Italian countryside or the stone walls of a castle? Airbnb has always been a great option for affordable and quirky accommodations, but these homes take the whole “rental” idea to a new level of amazing. From a bamboo cottage in Bali to a windmill in Santorini, Greece, these getaways will have you wanting to cancel your return flight.

1. Villa in Bali ($169 a night): Instead of staying in separate hotel rooms, wouldn’t it be more fun to spend time with your friends at your own private villa? This villa has three bedrooms and is recommended for six friends. Close to Bali’s most popular resort town, this villa is place where you can enjoy the peace and quiet all day and then head into town for a great dinner.

2. Cottage in Mexico ($95 a night): If you really want to get away from it all, head to the little fishing village of Yelapa and check out this private retreat, which is only accessible by water taxi. The owner is a recognized gourmet chef and has designed her fantasy kitchen for guests to use. After you eat, take a dip in the freshwater pool or head down to the beach to enjoy the sun.

3. Boutique Eco Lodge in Nicaragua ($265 a night): Overlooking the lush hillside jungle, this oceanside rental has jaw-dropping views, even from the pool. The 3,500-square-foot house has room for eight, or you can just rent a room if you like. Be at one with nature and experience jungle life in this small, private community that has been designed using green building concepts, native hardwoods and stone.

4. Farmhouse in Italy ($320 a night): History buffs and romantics will love this restored 16th-century farmhouse in the Italian countryside. Even though the building is historic, the atmosphere is luxurious and comfortable, and you’ll definitely feel pampered as you try to choose between sunbathing by the pool, exploring the countryside or venturing into the village to enjoy local food.

5. Villa in Greece ($185 a night): This 17th-century villa is located in a perfectly preserved village in Greece. It’s also kid-friendly and a short drive to the beach! You’ll feel refreshed just admiring the decor of deep blue accents, bright white walls and charming elements like exposed stone walls and beam ceilings.

6. Bamboo Cottage in Bali ($70 a night): Get your mind, body and soul realigned as you enjoy the complete peace of the Balinese countryside. A five-minute walk from the town of Ubud — a hotspot for yoga retreats — the cottage has many comfortable amenities such as a complimentary cell phone, a traditional dinner served with candlelight, breakfast delivery every morning and rice fields to explore when you’re feeling well rested.

7. A Windmill in Greece ($327 a night): Did you know there is an award for “best sunset”? Apparently it exists, and this little town draws travelers from all over the world to see their world-renowned sunsets. A stay in this dreamy pastel windmill definitely feels like something out of a fairy tale.

8. French Cavern ($86 a night): You won’t get views with this cozy little rental, but you will get a truly unique and quite romantic place to stay while exploring the hometown of Leonardo da Vinci. Real talk: If you’re honeymooning, who needs windows anyways?

9. Treehouse in Georgia ($364 a night): What kid didn’t dream of living in a treehouse? Although to be fair, even as adults, we definitely wouldn’t say no to a night or two in this very romantic, woodsy getaway. You’ll probably get the best sleep of your life while being surrounded by the sounds of nature. Major bonus? Fresh coffee is delivered every morning.

10. Houseboat in Denmark ($168 a night): Why settle for oceanfront views when you can actually stay on the water? Enjoy the views from this modern and stylish houseboat in Copenhagen. When you start craving solid ground, take a water taxi to the beautiful city center and enjoy biking around and gathering things for dinner.

11. Modern Apartment in Iceland ($116 a night): There are breathtaking views and then there are views like this. Head to Iceland this summer and you can enjoy the wonders of the midnight sun, or you can wait to vacation in winter and see the Aurora Borealis. Don’t worry; even though it looks remote, a thriving little town is just ten minutes away with lots of restaurant options for the nights you’d rather not cook.

12. Geodome in Spain ($35 a night): Think of this like the grown-up version of a European backpacking trip. A colorful, faceted dome gives you a cozy place to spend the night and you can spend your days baking pizza in the oven, practicing your skills on the grill, lounging on the sun-drenched deck or exploring the lakes around the Andalusia area.

13. Container Home in Spain ($130 a night): Tiny homes are trending now, but we’ve never seen a container home quite this stylish — it even has its own private pool! Located in a very quiet neighborhood, the home is perfectly situated for exploring by bike, barbecuing on the porch or heading into the town of Palma for restaurants and nightlife.

14. Industrial Apartment in Tokyo ($295 a night): If urban vibes are more your thing, you can stay right in the center of Tokyo in a stunningly cool apartment. With both Japanese and Scandinavian decor throughout, all you design lovers will be in heaven. It’s close to all of Ginza’s famous shopping, markets and restaurants, so you might have a hard time deciding whether you want to go explore or enjoy your mini oasis.

Now that Halloween is officially over, it’s time to lean into all things holiday cheer. My favorite way to get into the Christmas spirit is decorating my space to match all the cookie decorating parties, gift wrapping sessions, and holiday cocktail hours to come this winter. But I’m one to do this on a budget – I often hit the thrift store for Christmas decor. When I’m not there, I’m scouring Amazon for pieces that are cute, but still take it easy on my wallet.

These are the best Amazon Christmas decorations I found that don’t cost an arm and a leg, but rival styles you’d find at more upscale stores like Anthropologie and Nordstrom:

Amazon

Peiduo Small LED Light Birch Trees

These tiny trees lit by twinkly LED lights are perfect for topping your mantle or dinner table. I think they add just the right amount of whimsy to your space, no matter how you decorate with them! They're not necessarily Christmas-specific, either. Their simple design allows you to spruce 'em up in all kinds of ways year-round. Similar pieces at Target and Anthropologie range from $21 $68 for one tree, but you can get two trees for just $25 on Amazon right now.

Amazon

Plaid Throw Pillow Covers

Plaid – specifically red plaid – is timeless when it comes to Christmas decor. It never fails to make a space extra cozy! These 18x18-inch covers are perfect for throw pillows on your bed and couch alike. You can snag this set of 2 in a few other holiday-ready colorways for just $10, and they'll likely last you a while with the right care.

    Amazon

    Artgar Real Touch Pine Garland

If you have a mantle, use it! A mantle is prime real estate for Christmas decorations like stockings, candles, and cards – but none of that is truly complete without a good garland! This 6-foot faux pine garland can easily span your mantle to fill in any negative space and simply make things cozier. It comes with attached LED lights (no wall plug necessary, just a few batteries) as well as pinecone accents to make the garland itself feel fuller. Plus, $30 isn't so bad for a statement piece like this!

    Amazon

    Vintage Bow Decorative Tray

This piece reminds me of a tray Pottery Barn Teen and LoveShackFancy sells in their collaborative collection, except it literally costs $60 less. It's not a total dupe, but the one thing it does have in common is bows: the most adorable reference to gifting season! I think this $9 pick could be so cute as a serving platter for Christmas desserts or even as a festive catchall you keep on your coffee table throughout the holidays.

    Amazon

Kate Aspen Retro Floral Drinking Glasses

The intricate design on these green-tinted glasses really has me hooked. They'd look so good with any sort of Christmas party tablescape – as long as you're sipping Christmas cocktails out of them! A similar set of 6 is currently being sold on Quince for $48. This one's only $26.

With the holidays in full swing, it seems only right to snuggle up on the couch and watch Christmas movies. And the first movie that’s at the top of our list? It’s none other than 2003’s rom-com Love Actually, which stars Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Alan Rickman, Andrew Lincoln and Emma Thompson. Sure, the movie will forever tug at our heartstrings. (We are STILL upset that Sarah and Karl didn’t end up together.) But what makes the timeless holiday classic so great are the relatable characters. And, while watching the film, if you ever resonated with Natalie because she gave off major Gemini vibes, then you’re certainly not the only one.

Keep reading to find out which Love, Actually character you are, based on your zodiac sign.

    Universal Pictures

Aries (March 21 – April 20): Colin Frissell

Aries like to take action and go after what they want. So are we really surprised that Colin Frissell embodies this zodiac sign to a T? Not only does he move to America to find a girlfriend, but his plan actually works, and he ends up taking her back to London with him. Talk about a man who’s bold and ambitious.

    Universal Pictures

    Taurus (April 21 – May 21): Jamie

Tauruses are known for being as loyal, dependable and hard-working. This is the case for Jamie, who is diligent writing his book when he meets Aurélia, who is hired as his personal housekeeper. If that wasn’t enough Jamie is patient and steady. So, when Jamie enrolled in a class to learn Aurélia’s native language and flew to her hometown in order to propose to her, we couldn’t help but think how Taurus coded he was.

    Universal Pictures

    Gemini (May 22 – June 21): Natalie

With Geminis, they are referred to as the sign with “two faces.” When Natalie first meets the Prime Minister, she is nice and respectful…until she utters the word “fuck” right in front of him, which he makes him smile uncontrollably (and us too!). On one hand, Natalie can be shy, sweet and polite. But whenever she’s around someone she’s comfortable (i.e. her family), she has quite the potty mouth. Could it be her celestial twin peeking through?

    Universal Pictures

    Cancer (June 22 – July 22): Karen

When it comes to Cancers, they are known as the nurturers of the zodiac signs. After Karen finds out about her husband’s brief indiscretion with a co-worker, one would think that her first thought would be to get a divorce and leave him. But in the end, they stay together for the sake of their children. Consider Karen a true “ride or die” partner.

    Universal Pictures

Leo (July 23 – August 22): The Prime Minister

Being that he holds a high ranking position, the Prime Minister is well accustomed to being in the spotlight. While Leo’s are considered to be natural-born leaders, it comes as no surprise that the Prime Minister exudes a sense of confidence and comfortability when it comes to being the center of attention. And they are willing to protect the ones they love, which makes the Prime Minister’s remark toward the President of the United States (after he saw the commander in chief behaving inappropriately toward Natalie) that much more iconic.

    Universal Pictures

    Virgo (August 23 – September 21): Sarah

Sarah was willing to do anything for her brother: even if that meant sacrificing her own happiness. Similarly, Virgos have this impeccable ability to focus and hone in on their skills or whatever they put their mind to, hence why Sarah put all of her energy into supporting her brother, who was struggling with mental illness.

    Universal Pictures

    Libra (September 22 – October 22): Juliet

Some may think Julie was unfaithful when ran up to Mark (AKA her husband’s best friend) and kissed him after professing his love through cue cards. But many Libras may fall victim to this: they tend to be indecisive, and as a result, this zodiac sign could end up putting other people’s feelings before their own. And the same thing can be said for Julie, who kisses Mark after he confesses his love for her. Nevertheless, Libras are just lover girls/boys at heart.

    Universal Pictures

    Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Harry

Known for being quite intense and mysterious, Scorpios can be misunderstood in many ways. (Yes, even more than Geminis…) So, it’s not hard to see clear parallels between Harry and Scorpios when he *coughs* starts having an affair with his co-worker and keeps it a secret from his wife *coughs*.

    Universal Pictures

    Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Jeannie

Sagittariuses are vibrant, fun-loving individuals who enjoy a good adventure. When Jeannie meets Colin in a bar upon his arrival to the States, she is so enamored with his British accent. And she is so open to exploring a romance with Colin upon first meeting him. Well, her and her three friends, that is…

    Universal Pictures

    Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): Mark

Similar to how Capricorns are incredibly loyal and dedicated to their relationships (whether romantic or platonic), Mark is determined to not ruin his friendship with Peter (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor). Even though he is madly in love with his best friend’s wife, Juliet. NBD.

    Universal Pictures

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Joanna Anderson

Joanna Anderson really is THAT girl. When she performs “All I Want for Christmas Is You” at the Christmas concert, she truly steals the show. (Not to mention that her voice is undoubtedly angelic.) So, it goes without saying that Joanna gives off major Aquarius vibes. This zodiac sign is known for being authentic and creative. Plus, Aquariuses are considered the humanitarian astrological sign. Need we say more?

    Universal Pictures

    Pisces (February 19 – March 20): Sam

Sam is compassionate, empathic and sensitive; just like a Pisces. In case you need a refresher, Sam learned how to play drums so he can perform alongside Joanna in the Christmas concert, not to mention he ran through an airport to profess his love for her before she left for America. If that’s not true love, then we don’t know what is.

Jac's on Bond Bodega Buns Cocktail

    Jac's on Bond

Oh, honey! This luscious Christmas cocktail emulates the sticky sweetness of Honey Buns mixed with notes of gin, pineapple, and lemon. You'll infuse a small batch of Ford's gin with Honey Buns first before shaking 2 oz of it with .5 oz pineapple juice, .5 oz lemon juice, .5 oz simply syrup, and a pinch of Maldon salt, and straining into a coupe glass.

“The Bodega Buns is the unexpectedly harmonious marriage of a “tropical” gimlet and the bodega classic Honey Bun," says Trevor Langer, Head Bartender at NYC's Jac’s on Bond. "The odd couple pairing brings out the best tasting quality in one another and subdue what some can consider less desirable. I.e. the sharpness of the gin and brightness from the citrus cut the cloying sweetness one may experience when eating a packaged cake, whilst still allowing that delectable bready note to still be present. My favorite thing to hear, which happens most times people try this drink for the first time is: ‘That literally tastes like a Honeybun!’”
