6 Sweat-Proof Makeup Hacks From A Celeb MUA That Really Work

sweat proof makeup for summer 2023

When we're enjoying our favorite burger and playing outdoor games, the last thing we want to worry about is sweating off our makeup. Ending the afternoon with mascara under your eyes and streaks in your tinted moisturizer is both uncomfortable and annoying, which is exactly why we talked to celebrity makeup artist Elizabeth Seropian (who works with names like Jacqueline Fernandez, Noah Cyrus, and the Stallone family) for her best tips and tricks.

How can I do a full face of makeup without feeling weighed down?

Image via Weder Soares Dos Santos/Pexels

You don't need heavy products to achieve a full face of makeup. Seropian recommends using a lightweight primer and either a weightless foundation or a tinted moisturizer.

"Choose cream or liquid-based products for blush, bronzer, and highlighter, set with a lightweight powder, and consider using a setting spray to keep everything in place," she adds. Setting cream products with a powder helps to lock them in because they bond together.

"Less is more when it comes to feeling weighed down by makeup," she adds.

What order should I apply products for sweat-proof coverage?

Image via Ron Lach/Pexels

"Start with an oil-free primer to control shine and extend makeup wear," she says. "Apply a sweat-proof foundation or tinted moisturizer and blend it evenly." Blending is a key element of any makeup routine because you want to make sure you can't see any sharp edges in your products.

Next, use a waterproof concealer, blend it into the skin, and set with translucent powder. "Apply waterproof blush and bronzer for color and definition. Use waterproof eyeliner and mascara," Seropian says. "Finish with a sweat-resistant setting spray to seal your makeup. This order will help you achieve long-lasting, sweat-proof coverage." Yes, please!

How can I refresh my makeup if I'm out and about?

Image via Dellon Thomas/Pexels

"A simple hack to refresh your summer makeup while on-the-go is to carry a facial mist or setting spray with you," Seropian says. Whenever you feel your makeup fading or any oiliness on the skin, lightly spritz your face.

"This will not only help to hydrate your skin but also revive your makeup, giving it a fresh and dewy appearance," she says.

Seropian also recommends using blotting papers if you need to absorb excess oil: "Gently press the blotting paper on the areas of concern to remove any shine. Finish off with a touch of translucent powder on those areas to set the makeup and keep it looking fresh throughout the day."

Can you recommend a waterproof mascara that doesn’t feel hard?

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

"Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG! Waterproof Mascara provides excellent waterproof performance without feeling heavy on the lashes," she says. "It gives a voluminous and lengthening effect while still maintaining a lightweight feel. The formula is comfortable to wear throughout the day and doesn't weigh down the lashes."

What's a foundation that doesn’t feel suffocating?

Image via Shiny Diamond/Pexels

"I recommend the Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation," Seropian adds. "Known for its long-wearing formula, this foundation offers buildable coverage without feeling heavy or cakey. It provides a natural matte finish and is resistant to sweat and humidity, making it a great option for all-day wear."

Just make sure you start small — Seropian warns that a little goes a long way.

What is your go-to method for removing waterproof makeup?

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

We've all struggled to remove waterproof makeup at the end of a long day, when all we really want to do is climb in bed instead. Seropian recommends using a dual-phase makeup remover or oil-based cleanser.

"These products effectively break down waterproof formulas without being harsh on the skin," she says. "Simply apply the product onto a cotton pad and gently swipe over the areas with waterproof makeup, or massage the cleanser onto dry skin and rinse with warm water. Follow up with a gentle cleanser and moisturizer to maintain skin health."

What are some common mistakes when it comes to sweat-proof makeup?

Image via Karolina Grabowska/Pexels

Seropian says that skipping primer, using heavy foundations, over-powdering, neglecting setting spray, and constantly touching the face are common mistakes she sees people make.

"Remember to prime, opt for lightweight foundations, use a light hand with powder, use setting spray, and blot sweat instead of wiping it off," she recommends instead. "Remember you can always build as you go when applying any of these products. Less is more!"

We've been talking about discovering the best drugstore mascaras, matte lipsticks and brow gels, but did you know you're supposed to replace your makeup products annually? This is one of those things TikTok gets right because beauty doesn't have an immortal shelf life. If you're getting the ick thinking about that trusty concealer you've used the last few years, we don't blame you!

Before you start rage or panic-cleaning, I chatted with the experts to understand what to replace — and when you should replace them! After hearing from Shawnelle Prestidge (Makeup Artist and Founder/CEO of PRESTIDGE beauté) and Joey Healy(Advanced Esthetican and Founder of Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection), I feel way more confident with my beauty cabinet. Here's what you need to know!

TL;DR

  • You can find a product's PAO (period after opening) date — AKA expiration date — on the back of the packaging.
  • Mascaras and eyeliners have the shortest shelf lives, and they should be replaced around every 3 months.
  • Foundation and concealers should be replaced once a year.
  • Lipsticks can be replaced once a year, but lip glosses can last up to 18 months.
  • Powder-based products can last a year and a half to two years.
  • Nail polishes are good for up to three years.
  • Fragrances start to break down after five years.

How can someone check the expiration date for their makeup?

Rachel Weeks

How many times have you picked up your order from Sephora or Ulta without looking at every detail of your makeup products? We're guilty of being more concerned about adding something to our routine too so don't feel like you're being called out! If you're not 100% sure how to start being mindful about something's shelf life, Prestidge and Healy want to let you in on a little secret.

"It's actually pretty simple. There's something called a PAO symbol, which stands for 'period after opening.' You'll find it on the exterior of makeup products — sometimes on the product itself but always on the box," he says. Wondering what it looks like? Healy says, "The PAO symbol looks like a small jar with a number followed by the letter 'M,' which stands for months. For example, '3M' means three months, '6M' means six months, and '12M' means twelve months."

Prestidge also adds, "Brands often print batch codes that consumers can input into websites like CheckCosmetic to determine the production date." If you've yet to open your product, Healy says "A good rule of thumb is to assume it will last about twice as long. So, if the PAO says '6M,' the product is good for six months after opening and likely up to twelve months if unopened."

Do some makeup products have a longer shelf life than others?

Tima Miroshnichenko

Based on what Healy shares, it's evident different makeup products have longer shelf lives than others, and there are plenty of different factors that determine why. "Products like mascara and eyeliner, which are used around the eyes and tend to be liquids or creams, typically have the shortest shelf life due to their risk of bacterial growth. You should replace them every three months," he says. Excuse us while we collectively clutch our pearls.

Now that we've caught our breath, we can breathe a sigh of relief because Healy says that's the only products we have to replace a little quicker. "Foundation and concealer, which are also liquids, can usually last up to a year. Lipstick is good for about a year, while lip gloss can last around 18 months," he shares. Still, Prestidge feels you should be especially mindful of liquid and cream products because their shorter lifespans are attributed to "their high water content which fosters bacteria."

For those of us who love other face products, we have an even longer time to replace them. "Powders, like brow powders, bronzers, and blushes, have a much longer shelf life — usually a year and a half to two years," Healy explains. Prestidge says this is because "they contain fewer ingredients prone to bacterial growth." And for good measure, Healy shares we can keep nail polish for "three years before it becomes dry and clumpy," and fragrances for "five years before they start to break down."

What are the top signs it's time to replace makeup?

Element5 Digital

Not always good at keeping track of when you bought your makeup? No worries — there are some key signs you can recognize that your makeup is likely expired. Healy points out you'll be able to see that "the formula may have shifted or separated, or the product may have dried." More often than not, both he and Prestidge agree expired products will often smell rancid. "For example, brow gel can smell musty if it's been sitting unused for a year. If you're unsure, it's better to throw it out," encourages Healy.

Not only that, but Prestidge says to pay attention to your product's color. "If the product's color shifts, it's a a sign it's degraded," she says. Also, your skin will let you know when expired products are irritating it. "If you notice itching, redness, or breakouts after using a product, it might be expired, she alerts.

To avoid this, go an extra step further by using a "label maker to note the purchase date on your products, or keep a record in your phone," suggests Healy. This will help lessen the chance you're using something that's full of harmful bacteria.

What can happen if someone keeps using expired makeup?

Polina Tankilevitch

There are some things we'd love for you to be rebellious about, but using old makeup isn't one of them. Healy feels the same way and says, "Using expired makeup increases your risk of infection and irritation, which can lead to unsanitary conditions and even bacterial contamination."

The last thing we want is for you to get sick because you didn't want to let go of something. While symptoms may not always be as severe — Prestige says you could see allergic reactions, redness, or acne — Healy reminds us that "at the worst, it could result in serious infections that require treatment." This could look like developing styes or pink eye if you're "using old mascara or eyeliner," according to Prestidge.

Plus, your makeup won't give you the look you're going for if it's expired. "Expired products may no longer perform as intended, compromising coverage, color, or longevity," she says. Healy's ultimate advice? "Always be cautious, check for the PAO symbol, and replace products when needed."

Christmas has come early for two reasons: Carpool Karaoke is back — and so is Lady Gaga! Wondering what they have in common? Everything!

The 2010's sensation gave us amazing celebrity appearances with James Corden as driver extraordinaire, and stars like Harry Styles, Katy Perry, and Selena Gomez. Lady Gaga joined the carpool in 2016 — with over 88 million views on Youtube — singing songs like "Million Reasons" and "Bad Romance" to her heart's content.

Finally, the pop star — and the show itself, TBH — made a return this week! And more than that? Lady Gaga even debuted her new Christmas song. I've already played it multiple times, so I know it's about to top my most-played Christmas songs. Excited? Here's everything you need to know about the surprise song drop, the return of Carpool Karaoke, and more!

See how Carpool Karaoke gave us the biggest surprise of 2024 — a new Lady Gaga Christmas song!

www.youtube.com

- YouTube

In an unexpected trailer for A Carpool Karaoke Christmas, Zane Lowe can be seen accepting a phone call from the one and only James Corden who has a huge favor to ask. The first passenger Lowe picks up is the "Bad Romance" songstress herself — followed by Chappelle Roan and Dua Lipa's own individual appearances.

The car's decked out in green wreaths and festive red bows which adds to the Christmas spirit as everyone sings along to famous holiday songs. Lady Gaga can also be heard singing "Christmas Tree" which has fans in the trailer's comment section besides themselves with glee!

According to Deadline, the special premiered on Apple TV+ December 15, so it's not too late to watch it if you're just as excited as we are. But that's not all!

The outlet also reported Lady Gaga and Lowe released a new version of "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" on all streaming music platforms! This means you get to hear the pop star give the nostalgic song a punk rock vibe that's now stuck in our heads.

If Lady Gaga tells us not to pout or cry, we're going to listen! (And sing along while we're at it 😉)

Whether you’re attending a special event or facing a busy day of errands, it’s a total bummer to dedicate so much time on your makeup only to notice it start to slip off a few hours later. The key to keeping your makeup looking seamless and smooth throughout long days is employing a good primer. But what makes a primer a good primer?

Jonaorle / PEXELS

“The secret often lies in a little thing called silicone,” says Laura Pucker, Founder and CEO of Pucker Up Beauty. “This magical ingredient creates an ultra-smooth surface on your skin, helping your makeup adhere and stay put, even when the day brings all kinds of challenges.”

Stella Cameron, a Hair and Beauty Expert at Family Hair and Beauty Salon, says silicone acts as a seal over your skin’s follicles to bar any air, moisture, or oil from smudging or melting your hard-earned full face of makeup.

A lot of primers nowadays are also formulated with additional skin-loving ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, vitamins A and C, and niacinamide to give your skin a boost in hydration and brightness – all while keeping your makeup intact. Ingredients like niacinamide in particular can help improve the skin barrier and combat uneven skin tone, too.

No matter your skincare and makeup goals, there’s a primer out there for you. These are the best primers according to our experts and editors!

Best Primers For Long-Wearing Makeup Looks

Amazon

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer

Both Pucker and Cameron recommend this primer because it truly helps makeup stay put all day.

“When I need a primer that won't let me down, whether I'm at an important event or just want my makeup to last all day, this is my first choice," says Pucker. "It's versatile and reliable, the kind of primer I always have in my makeup bag.”

“This primer has a creamier texture, is non-oily and light," says Cameron. "It protects the makeup from starting to run due to sweat. This makes it excellent for occasions, such as weddings or photographs, where you need your makeup to be worn for long periods.”

Amazon

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

This is a great primer for oily skin since it has a slight mattifying element. It primes your face for makeup and makes it stay, all while simultaneously concealing redness, minimizing the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and providing SPF 15 protection.

“This one is my favorite for controlling shine and creating a smooth, matte base," says Pucker. "It's perfect for those days when I know I'll be traveling and need my makeup to last.

Ulta

Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer

For drier skin that needs some extra love, this Too Faced primer is perfect. It's crafted with coconut water, which hydrates the skin, and probiotics that boost the skin's radiance and elasticity.

“On days when my skin needs hydration, this primer is my best friend," says Pucker. "This allows my makeup to stay fresh and vibrant, no matter how bad my day is.”

Amazon

e.l.f. Power Grip Primer

We love this e.l.f. primer over here at B+C. I really enjoy the fact that it has a gel texture that blends well with the water-based skincare and makeup products I use on the regular. It dries down to be tacky to the touch, which is extremely helpful in ensuring my makeup stays on.

B+C Staff Writer, Jasmine, also adores this product.

"It's really great for dry, oily, and combination skin, which explains why my skin feels immediately hydrated after I use it," she writes in her review. "It's also non-comedogenic — giving my pores room to breathe — and it doesn't leave a white cast after it's applied to my face. I'm a brown-skinned girlie, so this is highly important!"

Amazon

Laniege Glowy Makeup Serum Primer

If glow is what you want, this primer from Laniege expertly primes and hydrates your skin so you have a smooth base to layer on more luminous products. It's formulated with diamond mineral powder, which helps fill in any uneven texture on your face – which is why this is one of my personal go-to's!

I knew beauty trends were officially headed in a different direction when latte makeup dominated social media last year. Everything about it gave the appearance of soft features, making this millennial appreciate the ‘no makeup’ look more and more. And while I'm working on staying up-to-date on all the latest makeup trends, it also reminded me there are outdated trends that unintentionally age people...and definitelyneedto go.

Wanna look younger and more on-trend, too? From super metallic eyeshadow to contour that dominates your face, here are the 8 outdate makeup trends to leave in the early ‘90s to mid-2000s.

The 8 outdated makeup trends you need to stop ASAP!

1. Full Coverage Foundation

KoolShooters

There was a time where wearing full-coverage foundation was all the rage. From drugstore to high-end brands, it seems like they were consistently shoved in consumers’ faces to help us achieve a ‘full beat’ without sitting in a makeup artist’s chair. Also, those of us with dark spots or hyperpigmentation may have relied on them when we were in the thick of our skincare woes.

But these days, wearing too much foundation isn’t as popular as natural and skincare makeup are prioritized. If anything, more people are interested in wearing light-to-medium coverage foundation, skin tints, or tinted moisturizers.

2. Too Much Concealer

George Milton

It wasn’t until I watched this video by makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes that I realized some of us have been too heavy-handed with our concealers. There’s no reason we should be slapping products under the thinnest parts of our face, but we didn’t know any better!

Now that you know you can still get the desired effect with a minimal amount of concealer, don’t revert back to painting your under eyes!

3. 'Baking' Your Setting Powder

Chidi Young

Before you throw away your setting powders, step away from your makeup drawer and have a sit-down chat with me. There isn’t anything wrong with applying them to your face to help ‘set’ your foundation and concealer. However, spending over 10 minutes ‘baking’ your powder (AKA letting it sit untouched) doesn’t work for everyone.

It can lead to creased makeup which can derail your look, plus it’s a pain to correct when you’re halfway through your routine!

4. Overlining Lips

Kaboompics.com

I love a good lip liner, especially if it mirrors my favorite ‘90s makeup look. But, there’s such a thing as overdoing it. The key to lining your lips is following the natural flow of them. Going out of your way to draw above and under your lips’ lines comes off as comical and exaggerated. If anything, use a lip plumping gloss to help your lips look fuller.

5. Overtweezing Your Eyebrows

Getty Images

I don’t even have the words for this outdated makeup look besides wanting to say “no” 20 times in a row. But, I’ll bite and say why this shouldn’t be on your 2025 beauty moodboard.

Some people naturally have thinner eyebrows which is A-okay! However, purposely tweezing your eyebrows to smithereens is cringey. If you truly want to wear this look, here’s what you can do instead of tweezing:

  • Create a faux bleached look by applying a skin tone colored setting powder all over your brows.
  • Once they’ve ‘disappeared,’ take an eyebrow pencil or eyeliner to draw a thin line over them.

I’m…wondering what the ramifications of telling you how to do this will be, but only use go for this look if it’s a part of a themed party…like Halloween.

6. Exaggerated Highlighter On Cheeks

Milad Farhani

The shimmery look is in since it’s winter, but please don’t make it look like you dipped your cheeks into a vat of glitter. You can lightly dust highlighter onto your cheeks for a more natural glow that flows with the rest of your look. Otherwise you’ll look like a walking disco ball which could be the opposite of what you were going for.

7. Heavy Contour Or Bronzer

Laura Garcia

I know the ‘sculpted’ look is popular, but too much contour or bronzer can overpower the rest of your makeup and face. While it’s not impossible to fix if you do it by mistake, using the wrong shade of contour or bronzer may still peep through no matter how much you try to buff it out.

When in doubt, be gentle with your contour or bronzer application!

8. Incredibly Matte Makeup

Nataliia Yatsiuk

Matte makeup that didn’t budge was the ‘It Girl’ look for oily and combination skin girls! We thought it was the answer to our skin’s incessant need to hydrate our faces instead of actually using skincare products that focused on combatting that issue (psst…Vitamin C serums help!).

But now’s the time to break up with this look for good for one reason: dewy skin looks healthier.

While we have you here, learn about the outdated shoe trends you shouldn't be wearing in 2025 either.

As much as I love the wholesome parts of the holidays (like decorating Christmas cookies and opening gifts in the morning), one of my absolute favorite parts about the end of the year is ringing in a new one. 2025 is on its way, baby, and if you’re anything like me, you’re already scheming up a New Year's party plan.
