14 Ways to Master Personal Style, According to Tamu McPherson

Tamu McPherson, a Jamaican-born street photographer and blogger behind All the Pretty Birds, is what we like to call a style champion around here. Perhaps it’s her juxtaposition of colors, textures, and prints, or maybe it’s her adventurous spirit that sets her apart from a generation of emerging influencers. With stints in both NYC and Milan (her current residence), she’s become as much known for her sporty aesthetic as her spot-on Italian-girl style. Have we piqued your interest yet? Keep scrolling for 14 of the tastemaker’s most groundbreaking looks to date, plus some style rules to swear by.

1. Dip your toes in color. When is McPherson not drunk on color? Never. The style chameleon gets it right with her color-clashing lewk consisting of a cautionary orange blouse and a violet wrap skirt. (Photo via Citizen Couture/Condé Nast via Getty)

2. Do the athluxury thing. You can take the girl out of New York City, but you can’t take the city out of the girl. The Milan Fashion Week regular balances out a retro track jacket and futuristic white shades with a romantic floral maxi for a defining look. (Photo via Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images for Gucci)

3. Fearless is Tamu’s middle name. As a rule of thumb, McPherson’s never more than an accessory or two away from being FROW-ready (note her “Protest” beanie, natch). Though don’t be mistaken; her leopard print coat and swishy metallic blue pleat skirt deserve major props too. (Photo via Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images for Self-Portrait )

4. Invest in a dope pair of jeans. One minute she’s wardrobed in Gucci, the next she’s roaming around in a trusty pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans and a deconstructed blouse. A reminder that every exceptional #OOTD starts from the bottom up. (Photo via Melodie Jeng/Getty)

5. Show off your femme side. The range of McPherson’s style prowess knows no limits. She reveals her softer side in an ultra-femme sheer pink lace frock that’s not even the least bit frou-frou. (Photo via Elisabetta Villa/Getty)

6. Leave your (style) mark. It’s all about an outfit-elevating topper — hypnotizing chevron FTW — that can be spotted at least a mile away. (Photo via Kirstin Sinclair/Getty)

7. Confidence is your #1 accessory. McPherson could legit rock a brown paper bag and still be the queen of FASHUN. Here she takes the fast lane by opting for a racing-inpsired Pepto pink denim patchwork jumpsuit from Miu Miu. (Photo via Jacopo Raule/Getty Images for Miu Miu)

8. Test-drive every trend once. You name it, she’s probably already done it. Being open to the latest wave of DGAF fashion, whether it’s grunge or granny, sets this reigning street maverick and former attorney apart from the crowd. (Photo via Taylor Hill/Getty)

9. Be a little (or a lot) extra. Daytime shimmer in the form of a sequined blue bomber? You don’t have to tell us (or McPherson) twice. (Photo via Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images for Prada)

10. Let your patent topper do the talking. There’s something to be said about a slick patent coat that’s equal parts fierce and traffic-stopping. For double the slayage, Dries Van Noten white ankle booties aren’t up for debate. (Photo via Romain Mayoussier/Getty Images for Kenzo)

11. Wear your personality on your sleeve. Every time we catch glimpse of McPherson having a maximalist moment or sporting her signature mid-heel “GG” loafers, we do a double take. (Photo via Venturelli/Getty Images for Bvlgari)

12. Play up your sock game. Don’t forget to look down… at this boss babe’s sock game, that is. Notice her Tiffany blue kitten heels and sporty branded tube socks from Nº21 serving up no shortage of street style bait. (Photo via Melodie Jeng/Getty)

13. A hands-free bag is your BFF. Being a mum of one, a street photog, and an It girl translates to functional (read: not frumpy) fashion on the go. Nine times out of 10, you’ll find McPherson saddling a hands-free crossbody bag en route to her next show. (Photo via Kirstin Sinclair/Getty)

14. Go bold or go home. The Pretty Bird founder dabbles in monochromatic shades of lemon yellow and chartreuse for a ‘gram-worthy getup that’s not show off-y in the least. It’s her beige coat and nude Valentino studded heels that ground her look. (Photo via Jacopo Raule/Getty)

"I have too many boots in my closet," said no one ever. While you may have decided to donate some pairs you've outgrown to make space in your wardrobe, we're sure you're likely already on the hunt for chic replacements as we speak. You could call this intuition our heightened psychic abilities from the Autumn Equinox...or you could say we've been there, done that.

Since it's impossible to buy all the stylish fall shoes — though, we're certainly trying — we've found the top 15 Steve Madden boots that made it to our wishlists this year!

Short Steve Madden Boots

Steve Madden

Roland Brown Leather Boots

Every fall closet needs at least one pair of Steve Madden boots that are a little rugged. These are great for the days when it's rainy out and you're not trying to chance slipping on the pavement.

Put on your best trench coat, rib knit sweater, and boot cut jeans for a casual look you'll replicate well past winter!

Steve Madden

Lizabelle Leopard Boots

The leopard print trend is the gift that keeps on giving because it seems to refresh itself every year. It seems like everyone can agree it's one trend you can't mess up. The sleek design and squared heel give it an air of chicness that makes it look like you're ready to take on the Runway office á la The Devil Wears Prada.

Steve Madden

Rogue Black Box Leather Boots

Feeling drawn to dark academia books now that it's fall? We don't blame you, but we do suggest slipping into these Rogue Black Box leather boots! We can see someone from the cast of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina wearing them with something preppy.

Steve Madden

Keeper Black Leather Boots

More concerned with walking to the beat of your own drum than keeping up with trends? You'll love these comfortable moto boots. While these don't come in half sizes — so you'll have to size up if you're more of a 7.5 than a 7 — they're still the perfect match for all the cute leather jackets we can't stop looking at!

Steve Madden

Brooks Beige Snake Boots

Going for a rocker vibe this fall and need something that'll make you stand out in the crowd? Go for these snake print ankle booties! They're the pointy best friends to the faux leather pants you'll be shuffling into. Who knows, you might keep them in heavy rotation with all of your fall outfits.

Steve Madden

Crue Chestnut Boots

You don't have to go over budget to wear UGGs — these dupes to give you the same appeal and comfort for much less. The inner lining is made of cozy faux shearling which will work with those days you'd rather be bed-rotting, but are forced to show your face at school or to run a few errands.

Steve Madden

Avalanche Tan Boots

Plan to spend a week at a semi-secluded log cabin? This pair is very aptly named 'Avalanche' for all your outdoor adventures. They're cute, functional, and will keep your feet warm when the temperature drops.

Long Steve Madden Boots

Steve Madden

Dawn Wine Boots

These tall boots are the exact shade of wine red everyone's going crazy over this fall! No really, you need Dawn — yes, I'm on a first-name basis with these boots — because she's going to elevate your sweater dress. Although the picture shows otherwise, the heel on these boots are more comfortable than you think.

Steve Madden

Lasso Brown Distressed Boots

We've seen a lot of cowgirl boots during the past couple of years, but none are quite as sexy as this pair. Keeping on par with the distressed look, we're sure the stitching also plays a role in what makes them unique.

Since each pair of these boots are handmade, it's normal if you buy a pair that doesn't look exactly like this. You'll still be getting the same premium leather and sexy wear these boots promise to give.

Steve Madden

Baddie Brown Distressed Boots

These pair of distressed Steve Madden boots are like a foray into that rebellious part of ourselves we generally keep locked away. While we're not talking about anything too crazy, we are talking about our inner rebels who have finally learned to stop being people pleasers.

It's no coincidence these are appropriately named 'Baddie.' Let yours out and grab this pair!

Steve Madden

Lucid Brown Suede Brown Boots

If you plan to spend time in printed maxi dresses, you need these suede boots. If you're giving them the side eye because they have a kitten heel, but we say don't knock it until you try it! Every outfit doesn't have require 4+ inch heels, especially if you plan to spend time visiting an apple orchard before heading over to a pumpkin patch!

Steve Madden

Lizette Cognac Suede Boots

There's the squared-heel we've fallen so in love with! While traditional stiletto heels are usually praised, we think nothing beats it's sleeker (and more supportive) sister. When that heel is paired with suede, you get these perfect Steve Madden boots.

Steve Madden

Lander Black Crocodile Boots

The best thing about crocodile print boots is how well they elevate any outfit. From casual to date night outfits, the Lander Boots will make you look sophisticated with every step you take. Don't be surprised if people keep stopping to ask you where you got them from.

Steve Madden

Bellamie Sand Suede Boots

Is it the year of the suede boots? We won't go as far as to say that, but it seems like our favorite Steve Madden boots have this one feature in common. The slouchy appearance will still give your outfits a touch of elegance, but people will know you're approachable given the relaxed fit.

Steve Madden

Ruskin Chestnut Suede Boots

Take a break from anything with a heel height over 2" and go for the Ruskin boots. They have a squared-toe that'll make people think twice about messing with you in public. They have the perfect weather-beaten look that makes certain boots look better over time which adds to the appeal of them.

Steve Madden

Faye Bone Leather Boots

If you could care less about looking approachable, slide your feet into these bone leather boots. They're trendy and look like they mean business — like all your upcoming fall outfits.

No matter what kind of day you're having, Marissa Cooper's having a worse one. Mischa Barton's The O.C. character went through the ringer during the first three seasons of the teen drama (remember how she overdosed in Tijuana...and also saw her parents post-hookup after their divorce?).

And during her time on The O.C., Mischa Barton struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. She was arrested for a DUI in 2007 and eventually received involuntary psychiatric hospitalization in 2009 after allegedly threatening to end her own life. And in a new interview, Peter Gallagher (who played Sandy Cohen on the show) says he's "just so grateful" for "the fact that she’s still alive."

  • Mischa Barton starred alongside Peter Gallagher in The O.C. from 2003-2006.
  • The actress has revealed the "trauma" of being a star at that point in her life.
  • Peter recently opened up about how he's thankful "she’s still alive."

The O.C. follows Ryan Atwood, who moves in with the Cohens after getting kicked out of his mom's house, and starts a relationship with Marissa shortly after. While Peter Gallagher played Adam Brody's TV dad instead of Mischa's, Sandy was a definitely father figure for Marissa, and it seems like Peter felt that same responsibility off camera.

"I’ve always felt very protective of her," Peter told The Independent. "First fame is toxic. First fame can kill you. She was 16 years old when she started working with us, so just the fact that she’s still alive, I’m just so grateful."

“You can go to therapy every day for the rest of your life,” Mischa said in a 2023 interview with The Sunday Times. “There’s just a certain amount of trauma [from] all that I went through, particularly in my early twenties, that just doesn’t go away overnight.”

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage revealed that season 1 overdose not only served as a cliffhanger, but gave “network executives an escape hatch on a performer they had been wary about” (via People). But Mischa Barton got her big break, becoming "how people knew the show," and (thankfully) Marissa recovered — only to die after a car crash in season 3.

As hard as that season 3 ending is to watch, Mischa did have the opportunity to watch it with Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke for the first time on their rewatch podcast. "It needed to be a thing, after everything she's been through, but if it's here I'll watch it with you," Mischa says.

"I couldn't do it, Mischa, I couldn't do it," Rachel adds. "But I'm going to do it if you're going to do it."

Mischa says even though being written off the show "was a little bit of a bummer," it wasn't necessarily a surprise. "The character was just doing too much," she told Vanity Fairin 2023. "And I think they ran out of places for her to go. It was not the best thing in the world, [but] there wasn’t much you could do at that point. It was whether she could sail off into the sunset, or die. At that point, I guess it’s better to have the more dramatic ending.”

Former Disney Channel star Dylan Sprouse and model Barbara Palvin are certainly living the sweet life after tying the knot in Palvin's native Hungary. The couple, who have been together for nearly five years, have always been pretty low-key — except for the occasional and undeniably adorable Instagram post (and a stunning wedding!). We are simply ~obsessed~ with this celebrity couple, especially after they pulled out all the stops for their couple's Halloween costume. Keep scrolling to see some of their best moments :').

See Dylan Sprouse & Barbara Palvin's Halloween Couple's Costume!

For Halloween Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin stunned as the Phantom and Christine from Phantom of the Opera. Dylan wore a mask and a black cape, while Barbara wore a beautiful white dress. While the costume is obviously a nod to the musical, it also totally reminds us of their day as bride and groom.

"In Sleep He Sang to Me," Barbara said in a post, quoting the musical's titular number. "@dylansprouse my forever Phantom."

Who did Dylan Sprouse marry?

www.instagram.com

On the couple's wedding day (July 15, 2023), Barbara wore a Vivienne Westwood wedding gown to celebrate her Hungarian nuptials, bringing together their nearest and dearest for an intimate(-ish) celebration. Barbara and Dylan tied the knot on her parent's property, which conveniently doubles as an event venue, with plans to host an larger wedding in California in the fall.

"This past weekend was supposed to be an intimate event, but we ended up having 115 guests in the end because there are a lot of people we care about, and we wanted them all to be there," Barbara told Vogue.

When did Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin get engaged?

Barbara Palvin on Instagram: "♥️"

After months of speculation surrounding the couple's engagement, Dylan and Barbara confirmed their engagement in conversation with Sprouse's twin brother, actor Cole Sprouse, for V Magazine in June, sharing that they got engaged last September.

"We didn't necessarily feel the need to be fully transparent with the public about that aspect of our engagement," Dylan said. "What we wanted to do with Stephen [Gan, V editor-in-chief] and the V team is make something that was kind of tongue-in-cheek about the nature of private versus public. We're playing with the idea of perception."

Barbara noted that the lovebirds wanted to announce the news "on our time," adding, "When some people leaked the information that we got engaged, our PR team was like, 'Hey, so you guys should do maybe a post about it or talk to this magazine or talk to that magazine…' That really annoyed me because I knew we were building this story up. So, I'm very happy that we ended up doing it our way."

When did Barbara Palvin and Dylan Sprouse start dating?

According to People, the couple met back in 2017 after a party when the Suite Life On Deck star slid into the model’s DMs (and as they say, the rest is history). The duo made their relationship Instagram official back in 2018 with Barbara’s sweet birthday tribute for Dylan’s 26th birthday.

Let’s be real here for a second though, we all knew they were endgame the minute Dylan went above and beyond to support Barbara at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show that same year (remember this viral video?). Three days after the fashion show, the Hungarian model told Vogue Australia that she hadn’t had a boyfriend in six years, but had now found “the perfect guy” in Dylan (we aren’t crying, you are).

How old are Barbara Palvin and Dylan Sprouse?

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images

Barbara Palvin was born on October 8, 1993, making her 31 years old. Dylan Sprouse was born on August 4, 1992, meaning he's 32 years old. So there's only a one-year age gap between them!
