Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Is About More Than Her Musical Eras — It's About All Of Us

taylor swift eras tour review

I never thought I’d see Taylor Swift live. In all honesty, throughout the last 17 years of her storied career, I oscillated back-and-forth between being a fan and outright refusing to listen to her music at times. It was never about her talent — that was and is undeniable. I just wanted to be different.

It’s both embarrassing and incredibly freeing to admit my desperate need to stand out from the crowd. As a triple Sagittarius (I know), I’m a self-described agent of chaos who thrives on theatrics and activates for an audience. For all intents and purposes, Taylor should and would have been my bread and butter.

Sure, certain songs stood out — “Wildest Dreams” was the perfect anthem for the Tumblr-era glory of 2014. But, I didn’t genuinely come around until Lover.

I’ve done a lot of soul searching since then, parsing through the particularities that led me down this path. It hit me one day, after years of therapy and some serious work on myself, that I disliked her for the reasons I disliked myself. I was too much, too loud, too extra, too performative, too quirky, too girly, too…everything. And yet, my fear of invisibility stoked every single fire again and again. Like my Sagittarius sister, I’d been the archer and the prey.

So, I passed every opportunity to end up at a Taylor Swift concert as a legitimate fan. Until now.

The Brit+Co team at Taylor Swift's Era's Tour

I arrived at the Eras Tour at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, May 27, heart pumping. Tiktok gave me the blueprint — what to wear, how to film better, when to expect surprise songs — but no tip could prepare me for Taylor in her entirety.

Fans flocked to the stadium in full force, bringing an energy I’ve never seen before.

“Would you like a bracelet?”

“I love your outfit!”

“Do you want me to take a picture for you?”

Before I even walked on the floor, I was on cloud nine. As a Born Again Swiftie, I’m acutely aware that I could easily be considered a bandwagon fan, but nobody made me feel like that. Even the bathroom line (long and lasting) was full of friendly banter and compliments. Everyone was warm, everyone was excited, and everyone was really there for one reason — to witness the sheer magnitude of Mother Taylor.

I only heard echoes of Gracie Abrams and Phoebe Bridgers from the chicken finger line, but the singer-songwriters started the show off with a beautiful bang. People laughed and cried and applauded as loudly as they would for any headlining act. Little did I know, that was just the beginning.

The moment the countdown clock hit two minutes, MetLife Stadium shook. People screamed. I knew I was in for something truly spectacular.

Image via Haley Sprankle

From start to finish, Taylor gave a gorgeous, effortless performance. Every costume, every piece of choreography, every visual, every vocal — she didn’t miss a mark.

The show opens in the Lover era, with pinks and purples billowing across the stage in all their girly glory. While the beautiful background and looming stadium may swallow any other artist whole, Taylor commanded the stage instantly, striking strong poses and strutting confidently from corner to corner.

And it was like that for every section — over the next three and a half hours.

Image via Haley Sprankle

For Fearless, Taylor fluttered and flounced, bringing back the frenetic energy of our youth. Her evermore set evoked wonder and witchcraft. For reputation, she was sexy and sure of herself, ready to play the villain or pursue you at whatever cost. For Speak Now, she literally gave us the sparkling night every girl dreamt of. The list goes on.

While “Cruel Summer” (and its iconic bridge) couldn’t have been a more perfect opener, the second half of the show was quite possibly everything to me. From Red to Midnights, she played hit after hit after hit. In the same way her earlier albums (and the first half of the show) captured the whimsy of our youth, the second half celebrated the absolute fun and chaos and energy of our early adulthood — and she embodied that to the fullest.

From “22” to “Shake It Off,” Taylor had the audience in the palm of her hand, scream-singing and dancing together. I had to check if I still had eyebrows after she lit the stage on fire (literally) with “Bad Blood.” The whole place shimmered, Mikael spirit fingers and all, when she busted out “Bejeweled.”

Image via Haley Sprankle

And while there was the less boppy, folkore-ian interlude, even still she enthralled the audience. The set, choreography, and acting for “The Last Great American Dynasty” were a modern Broadway musical condensed into four minutes. I could have watched an entire show just about that story, but a single smirk between Taylor and the dancer portraying Rebekah — a small, sincere gesture symbolizing a reclamation of loudness, shamelessness, and independence — perfectly summed up the narrative.

That’s the real story with Taylor and her eras. We’ve watched her grow through each moment, witnessing and coveting and analyzing her every single move. And in analyzing her, like me, many of us were really analyzing ourselves. But in that verbal and visual reclamation, Taylor gives us all permission to fully be ourselves as she grants herself the very same.

Maybe she had a lot of boyfriends. Maybe I was a capital T Theatre Kid. Maybe we were all just too damn much. Or maybe we were just right.

As someone who has struggled with skin cancer in the past, the #1 MOST important skincare product I have to use everyday is SPF. It's a nonnegotiable for me. I wear it on my face and any exposed parts of my body whenever I leave the house. Because of that, one thing I've accepted is that I'll probably always smell like sunscreen, and my skin will always feel a little sticky from the residue of the SPF. Then I heard that the Sun Bum Sunscreen offered an amazing smell, with a high SPF of 50, andit doesn't leave a leftover sticky feeling on your body. I tried it for a week to give you a full review — here are my honest thoughts!

About Sun Bum Original SPF 50

Kayla Walden

First thing's first, this is a non-mineral — AKA chemical or "synthetic" — sunscreen. Heading straight to the source, Sun Bum's website explains that this means that the Sun Bum Original SPF 50 uses non-physical active ingredients, which means that it helps to absorb the UV rays and direct them off of your skin. Sun Bum also claims that all of their sunscreens — mineral or not — are "Hawaii Act 104 Reef Compliant (made without Oxybenzone and Octinoxate)" so that they don't negatively impact the coral reef!

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 also has a very signature scent that they've used in their non-mineral sunscreen for a while, so it's supposed to make you "smell like summer." The company states that they want their products to smell so good and be so light that kids actually want to put them on — smart!

Does Sun Bum Original SPF 50 leave a white cast?

Kayla Walden

Upon first application, I noticed that Sun Bum Original SPF 50 starts white, but then almost emulsifies into a light serum that effortlessly blends into the skin. With most sunscreens, I have to apply and rub it in for a few minutes to get rid of the white cast, but this one quickly absorbed into the skin. That was huge for me, because if you're using sunscreen daily like I am, then you want it to be easy to use — and this one definitely is!

My Full Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Review

Kayla Walden

Starting off, I love that Sun Bum Original SPF 50 really is a lotion. It goes on incredibly smooth, and melts into the skin. It's not too thick or sticky at all, especially in comparison to most sunscreens. I also noticed it wasn't tacky on the skin throughout the day either. Instead, it was very thin, almost like a light serum, so I didn't even notice it was there after applying. This was a much welcomed change — normally, I can feel the sunscreen on my skin, but this one was incredibly light.

The longevity of this sunscreen was really great, too. However, you want to re-apply if you're in the sun for prolonged periods of time! Sun Bum recommends reapplying at least every two hours.

Finally, I noticed the smell was fantastic! It didn't't smell like average sunscreen with a really heavy chemical scent — it genuinely did smell like summer! What does "summer" smell like exactly? It was a coconut-adjacent scent, giving off a tropical aura, which I happen to love. So, it was nice to know that I smelled good all day, and didn't have to worry about any kind of chemical stench.

Final Verdict

Kayla Walden

Overall, Sun Bum Original SPF 50 will definitely be a re-purchase for me! I hate feeling sunscreen on my body, and this was one I didn't even notice was there! It's light, smells good, and isn't sticky — so that's a 10/10 for me on all fronts. Not to mention, it also doesn't have the normal harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and bad for my skin. I will definitely be stocking up on this gem!

When Taylor Swift pours herself onto a page, you end up with lyrics that are unequivocally and unapologetically her yet relatable to anyone listening. From processing the life cycle of a relationship to analyzing the gender disparities that become more pronounced with success, the singer constantly proves that she possesses a unique ability to read moments for more than what’s in front of her eyes. It’s the genius behind her lyricism, but it also happens to be the way she’s wired to see the world.

Swift’s penchant for baking chai cookies and her love of cats have labeled her an “old soul,” but I’m going to assign her another label usually reserved for former gifted kids: she’s “wise beyond her years.” Don’t just take my word for it, though — take hers! These 22 Taylor Swift quotes prove that she’s a sage inside of a pop star’s body.

Having straight, thin hair means it's super easy to tell when it's sweaty, greasy, or oily. (Sad!!) That means after a brutal heat wave, or getting caught in a surprise rain storm, my hair needs a little extra TLC. While I swear by regularly double cleansing, there's one particular scalp scrub that always leaves my hair clean and rejuvenated after an Everything Shower.

Christophe Robin Hydrating Cream Scrub With Aloe Vera

Amazon

The Christophe Robin Hydrating Cream Scrub With Aloe Vera is a hydrating scalp scrub that provides just as much moisture as it does exfoliation, meaning that when I step out of the shower, my hair is clean AND soft. The scalp scrub is the same consistency as conditioner, just with tiny exfoliating beads. It's full of 75 Active Molecules, 20 Minerals, 18 Amino Acids, And 12 Vitamins to supercharge your hair before you shampoo, while agave juice extract soothes your scalp and combats redness.

I use this scalp scrub about every six weeks. I scoop some of the product into my palm and work it into my roots until there's a lather. Instead of rinsing it out right away, I let it sit for a few minutes while I condition the ends of my hair so my roots can really soak it up!

My only callout for this product is that the exfoliating beads can be a little tricky to rinse out, so you'll want to follow it up with a few rounds of shampoo. But it leaves me feeling so fresh, I don't mind!

May 15, 2024 — Rumors Swirl About Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's Alleged Divorce

Though Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have reconnected, there have rumors that their marriage may be in trouble. A source alerted InTouch Weekly that there have been obvious signs that something is wrong for a while.

"The writing is on the wall – it’s over," the source claims before saying, "They’re headed for a divorce – and for once, [Ben’s] not to blame!" The source believes the two have a lot of love for each other, but that they're jus too different to be together.

TMZ has also reported that Ben seems like he hasn't been living at home — yikes! He was photographed leaving going to and coming from a L.A. home without Jennifer. It's also being reported that he's been allegedly spending the night there.

But, TMZ also pointed out that the pair are still wearing their wedding rings so it's hard to say if there's any merit to the breakup rumors. Until Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck actually give a statement, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope for the best! And we're not the only ones — 13 Going on 30's Jennifer Garner (who was married to Ben Affleck from 2005-2015) “is encouraging Ben to work on his marriage to Jen,” according to an Us Weeklysource. “She fully supports their relationship and wants nothing more than for him to be happy.”

Also, Jennifer Lopez wants us to really mind our business. People reported than an actress was not feeling a pushy reporter's question about her marriage and didn't have a problem letting them know. She was promoting Atlas with her co-stars when said reporter asked, "Is your divorce with Ben Affleck real? These rumors?"

Though her co-star Simu Liu expressed his disdain for the questions first, Jennifer quickly said," You know better than that." This lets us know that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are well aware that people are talking about their marriage.

Image via Michael Loccisano/Getty Images for 20th Century Studios

Still, this hasn't stopped insiders from talking about what's going on behind closed doors. One even reached out to People to say, "They’re still living separately," and "She’s back in L.A. for tour rehearsals. She seems okay. She’s very focused on work." The outlet even reported that the couple are in fact living apart and have been seen on several occasions without each other.

While I know some people could care less, I remember when Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck first started dating so to see them struggling again feels a little painful. I'm trying to keep hope alive, but they ultimately know what's going on in their relationship. If they do choose to separate, that's a choice we'll all have to respect.

May 31, 2024 — Jennifer Lopez Cancels Her "This Is Me" Tour

June 21, 2024 — Ben Affleck Discusses Family Life With Jennifer Lopez

In a newly released interview with Kevin Hart, Ben Affleck showed a rare vulnerability that we don't often see. The two chatted about several things during the Season 4 premiere of Hart to Heart, but it was Ben's admission that he has "resting hard face" (via Entertainment Tonight) that caught our attention.

Though there have been theories about why Ben often looks like he'd rather be somewhere else than dealing with paparazzi, he made it clear why he's not always smiling when the cameras are on him. "I also don't like a lot of attention...people see me [and] they're like, ‘Well, this dude always mad…’ Because somebody has their camera and sticking to my face.”

Ben even mentioned a time when he, Jennifer, and their kids were trying to make it to a play while walking through Times Square. Though he knows fans are going to be excited to see them, it's obvious he's not thrilled when their kids are subject to that kind of pandemonium.

"We get out with her, all the kids, through Times Square, and the s--- was like f---in’ bananas...it feels like hundreds of people and now screaming," Ben explained (via People).
