11 of the Best Geek Chic Moments from Fashion Week

They came, they saw, they looked freaking fabulous. And this year, the fashion set at New York Fashion Week embraced all-things tech like never before. Designers made jaws drop with cutting-edge runway shows — from showing instantly shoppable styles to debuting their lines in 4D; brand-new wearables made their mark, too (in a really, really good way), and all of it was caught as-it-happened on Instagram, Twitter and Vine. We’re still refreshing our feeds for stragglers, but in the meantime, scroll through the moments that made us totally geek out this NYFW.

1. Models Acted Out Emoji IRL: Vogue is #winning on Vine this Fashion Week, sharing some of the most LOL-worthy six seconds ever captured from behind-the-scenes. The mag’s latest must-see moment is this vid of model Vanessa Axente acting out the iconic emoticon, including a coy monkey-see and adorable grin face [actually claps hands, gives thumbs up].

2. CuteCircuit Wants You to Wear LEDs to Work: But not in the all of the lights way that pop stars like Katy Perry and Nicole Scherzinger have done in the past. The brand known for its LED-covered clothes that blink and flash from head-to-toe dimmed its designs for its SS’15 collection, and the office-ready separates that cast only a subtle glow have us dreaming of the day we can move from the boardroom to the cocktail bar in a beaming pantsuit. Future closets, get very, very excited.

3. Rebecca Minkoff Handed Out Old School 3D Glasses: The crowd at Rebecca Minkoff’s show got a special favor as they took their seats: a pair of 3D glasses to wear while her last five looks, made of stereoscopic 3D fabric, walked down the runway. But once the lights dimmed and the front row slipped on their #throwback style specs (yep, they looked exactly like the kind you’d wear at the movies), the effects reportedly fell flat. Maybe next year she’ll upgrade to Oculus (maybe?)

4. Three Wearables Made Their Runway Debuts: This year, there was no question that wearable tech belonged on the runway. Both Opening Ceremony and Rebecca Minkoff debuted bracelet-style wearables, and the gadgets-in-disguise were as chic as we could have ever imagined. With their tech bits masked by studs, metallic chain and luxe gemstones, the pieces finally set the bar for the next wave of want-to-wearables with its effortless fusion of form + function. Folks, the crossover is real.

5. Tommy Hilfiger Assembled His Own High-Tech Paparazzi: How can a pic from the front row of a NYFW show get any more special? Answer: When the snaps are shot with a Lytro, a cutting edge point-and-shoot that lets you manipulate the focus of every photo taken. A slew of style writers were tapped to capture Tommy Hilfiger’s show through the Lytro lens, and the interactive results — posted to the brand’s Twitter account — are pretty cool. A click on the model brings her into focus, and another behind her sharpens the crowd.

6. Runways Became Instantly Shoppable: Fashion girls with a constant case of the need-it-nows, YOU just had the best week ever! That’s because a handful of shows were instantly shoppable via Instagram, and all it took to get the clothes from the runway to your closet was a simple double tap. BCBG and sister brand Hervé Leger pioneered the impulse feature this season — we’re hoping it’s an even hotter trend for FW’15.

7. Monique Lhuillier’s Models Wore Holographic-Style Makeup: Monique Lhuillier had a surprisingly futuristic challenge for her beauty team — to make her models’ eye makeup less romantic and more digital. We have to say, the MAC makeup artists nailed the from-another-planet vibe by using bits of cellophane. How’s that for a runway-inspired #beautyhack?

8. This Bag Moved to the Top of Our 3D Printed Style Wish List: While we were admittedly disappointed in the lack of 3D printed garments + accessories on this season’s catwalks, this one Edun handbag, made with 3D printed hardware, more than made up for it.

9. Ralph Lauren Put on a 4D Runway Spectacular: What does a next-level runway look like? THIS. For what would be his second foray into merging the worlds of fashion and 4D technology, Ralph Lauren projected video of models donning his brand-new Polo Ralph Lauren women’s line onto a cascading waterfall background in lieu of a traditional fashion show. The installation was epic and other-worldly.

10. YSL Made Fashion People Love Google Glass: We never thought we’d see the day when sparks flew between the fashion set and the geekiest tech-cessory around: Google Glass. But it happened when YSL makeup artists used the smart headsets to turn client sessions into video tutorials shot from their POVs. It’s the best use for Glass outside of the tech world *we’ve* seen yet.

11. Rachel Zoe Styles the Most Maj Icon on Instagram: And when you find out who the international sensation is, you’re gonna go bananas. It’s the one and only Barbie, who’ll employ Rachel Zoe’s styling services as she galavants to fashion shows in London, Paris and Milan. Like the fashionista she is, Barbie will of course be posting all of the Rach-approved #OOTDs on her Instagram. Of B, Rachel says, “She was my very first client and just as glam as I remembered ;).”

Emily Henry not only new pops books year after year, but she also has a knack for frequently announcing exciting book adaptations, too! From launching Funny Story(already love it) to news of the Beach Read movie (crossing our fingers for a Ayo Edibiri and Paul Mescal announcement any day now), EmHen's had a busy year — and it just got even busier.

After Henry announced the news herself on her email newsletter, "Emily's Grocery List,"Deadline confirmed that Netflix is in the process of adapting Happy Place. We've got the scoop on everything you should know about the newest Emily Henry adaption!

Here's everything we know about Emily Henry's Happy Place show, coming to Netflix soon.

Who's in the Happy Place cast?

Seacia Pavao/Netflix

While we don't have a confirmed cast yet, we're not-so-patiently waiting patiently to see who's attached to this adaption. And there's one star Emily Henry would love to see in the movie.

"For Harriet in Happy Place, I think Eve Hewson would be wonderful," the author told People. "And usually, when I am thinking of casting, I'm not actually thinking of someone who looks like that person. I'm just thinking of someone who has that same vibe. But she actually does look more or less how Harriet is in my head."

Where can I watch Happy Place?

Devyn Glista/St. Blanc Studios

We don't have an official Happy Place release date yet, but the series will be available to stream on Netflix.

What is Happy Place about?

Amazon

The Happy Place plot follows a couple, Harriet and Wyn, as they navigate their broken relationship. The stories winds over the course of many years: as friends, lovers, fiancées, and now...whatever they are. Every summer, they go to the beach house with their closest friends, but this year they set out for one last hurrah before the beach house is sold.

Their whole friend group thinks they're still together, so they pretend to be together just for a short while just to enjoy one last summer all together. Only...it's harder than you think to pretend you're not in love with someone when you are, in fact, still in love.

Is Happy Place being adapted for the screen?

Emily Henry/Instagram

Emily Henry officially confirmed that Happy Place is being adapted for Netflix. The author wrote in her email newsletter, "Happy Place is going to be a series on Netflix! I’ve been dying to tell you about it forever, and there’s actually A LOT more to share very soon, but since this little bit of news leaked today, I wanted to be the one to FORMALLY tell you."

She goes on to say she's thrilled about the series and even more excited that they've allowed her to be closely involved in the project, so that it can live up to her, and the readers', dream and vision for the book! She said that she wants to make it a series that the fans will love and be happy with. We couldn't be more excited to hear that!

Is Happy Place by Emily Henry going to be a series?

Emily Henry/Instagram

Happy Place will be made into a TV series with Netflix! This is great news, because it works better for the plot for the project to cover multiple episodes. The book has quite a long storyline that develops over many years and many summers in the lives of the main characters, so with flashbacks, it will require more time to delve into their stories.

This makes me so excited as a fan, because I believe this allows them the time to do the story justice, and really develop the relationship and chemistry between the two main characters, Harriet and Wyn, as well as the supporting characters also in the book.

Who's producing Netflix's Happy Place show?

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

The series will be produced by Netflix and Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican production company. This announcement follows multiple deals between Lopez and Netflix, including their latest release of Atlas, which garnered over 72 million views! Plus, JLo is a certifiable rom-com queen, so we know EmHen will be in the best of hands with her!

Who's the showrunner for the Happy Place show?

Rich Fury/Getty Images

We can't escape the world of Bridgerton because one of the show's Co-Executive Producers — Leila Cohan — is attached to the Happy Place TV show! She'll be the showrunner and co-writer for the series which means fans of Emily Henry's fun rom-com are in for a treat (via Deadline).

Are there other Emily Henry book adaptations being made?

Amazon

Beach Read, a beloved Henry best-seller, is being made into a movie! Fans continue to speculate that Paul Mescal and Ayo Edibiri will star in it, especially after Henry said they would be amazing for the roles. Even Paul told Awards Watch he wants to do a romcom with Ayo...so, it's basically meant to be!

People We Meet On Vacationis also getting the movie treatment. The cast will be led by Tom Blyth and Emily Baer, and incredible author, screenplay writer, and rom-com lover Yulin Kuang is set to adapt the script, so that's bound to be a fabulous match!

Finally, we're getting a movie for Book Lovers. According to Us! Weekly, some fans think this is the movie for Ayo and Paul, but we're not convinced. Definitely keeping our eye out for who is cast, though!

We're so excited for the many Emily Henry projects in the works, and pending for the future. Emily Henry said at the end of her newsletter, "I cannot WAIT to tell you more, about this project and others, right here on my grocery list just as soon I’m given the green light. For now, though, I’m back to working on [REDACTED]. Happy reading, my friends."

Yikes, I'm scared and excited all at once, because she has taken over my life. Stay tuned her for further updates on her upcoming projects!

If you choose to tackle your commute, gym session, desk job, or grocery shopping with the aid of good music or your favorite podcast, chances are you’re spending a lot of time wearing headphones. With more of us plugged in to portable devices than ever, should we be worrying about the impact of sending sound straight into our eardrums? The World Health Organization thinks so: They’ve warned that listening to audio devices too loud and for too long is damaging the hearing of millions of teenagers and young adults. So how can we protect our hearing while also enjoying our favorite songs or podcasts? Listen up.

How Bad Are Headphones, Really?

This question has intrigued experts since the Walkman (RIP) came out in the late ‘80s, says Dr. Marco Jurado, an audiologist at Austin Regional Clinic in Texas. Dr. Jurado shares that the data is mixed: “Some studies have suggested that the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss was on the increase until the mid-2000s, whereas more recent studies have shown that it’s actually decreased in younger populations.” Regardless of how many young people are experiencing hearing loss, the experts agreed that the prevalence of headphones and earbuds have become a major contributing factor. “There are a number of causes of hearing loss, such as genetics or as a side effect of other illnesses, but the main culprit is noise, in particular, excessive use of headphones and earbuds,” says Dr. Leigh Hogan, an audiologist and founder of Hear Well Audiology.

It’s not simply that headphones are closer to your eardrums that makes them dangerous: As with any noise, it’s the volume that determines the impact on your hearing. Audiologist Dr. Meryl Hochdorf Miller from the Audiological Consultants of Atlanta in Georgia explains: “Sound loses energy, and therefore intensity, as it travels. If the sound coming out of your headphones is the same volume level as that emitted from a speaker, it is more dangerous, because the sound doesn’t travel as far to your eardrums.” The good news, then, is that headphones aren’t inherently damaging — but we have to use them responsibly.

What Makes for Good Headphones?

Given that the louder you listen, the more damage you’re doing, it’s best to look for headphones that reduce your urge to turn up the volume. Luckily, technology is here to help. “Noise-canceling or noise-reducing headphones mean you don’t have to increase the volume to overcome noise around you,” Dr. Miller points out. “Also, make sure that your headphones fit well. If they’re loose or tend to work their way out of your ears, you’re more likely to increase the volume to make up for the lost sound. If you have small ear canals, try over-the-ear headphones, earbuds that have a very small tip on the end, or having custom molds made.” That said, remember that it’s not just your hearing you have to think about when you’re walking down the street with your music blaring. “Be mindful of your surroundings when using noise canceling technology,” Dr. Jurado cautions. “There are some loud ambient sounds, like a car honk or approaching ambulance siren, that we still need to hear.”

If you feel comfortable broadcasting the fact you’re listening to a device and don’t mind carting around the extra bulk, headphones might be a better choice than earbuds. Dr. Whitney Hardy, a family medicine specialist with Ochsner Health System, warns, “Earbuds are more dangerous than headphones, because they sit closer to the eardrum and provide more direct vibration, increasing the decibel level of the sound by seven to nine decibels from its original level.” Solid justification for the headphones-as-accessory look.

What’s the Safest Usage?

The two key components of safe headphone use that all of our experts pointed to are, as Dr. Miller summarizes, how long and how loud? She describes a formula to keep in mind: “80 decibels (dB) is safe for up to eight hours: That’s about as loud as the garbage disposal in your sink. For every 3 dB you add to the volume, you have to cut the time in half. So if I listen to music at 83 dB and want to keep it at a safe level, I have to cut my listening time to four hours. At 86 dB, I will be safe at two hours, and so on.” So how do we make sure we’re not going over 80 dB? “Set the music so only you can hear it. If you turn headphones up loud enough that someone else in the same room can hear, it’s too loud.”

Don’t automatically trust your smartphone to protect you, either. “Many smartphones and MP3 players can reach a maximum volume as high as 100 dB, which is only safe for five minutes,” Dr. Hardy tells us. “A good rule to remember is the 60/60 rule, which is to listen for 60 minutes at 60 percent volume, then give your ears a break.”

One clue that the volume is too high, Dr. Jurado says, is tinnitus — that ringing in your ears you’ve probably experienced after going to a gig or a noisy nightclub. This specific form of tinnitus is known as a temporary threshold shift because it fades after a few hours, but “continuing use at this volume will certainly lead to hearing loss.” Unfortunately, it’s hard to know if overexposure to loud noises is damaging your hearing until it’s too late. Dr. Hogan says other symptoms to look out for are “feeling like your ears are full; difficulty understanding speech; having to ask people to repeat themselves; and having to turn the volume up on the TV or radio. If you notice any of these signs, get tested by a licensed audiologist.”

Even if you don’t — and especially if you use headphones a lot — Dr. Miller recommends getting tested to establish your baseline hearing, so you have a control to compare to later. Hearing safety might not be the height of rock ‘n’ roll, but take the careful approach now, and you can be tuning out the world with your headphones for years to come.

Grocery shopping nowadays has practically become an extreme budgeting sport. Between inflation, added tariffs, and supply chain issues, many households have begun visiting multiple stores each week to score the best deals and rethinking their usual grocery lists altogether.

However, there is some good news: with a few smart food swaps, you can still eat well without blowing your budget. Here are the simple changes you can make to save at the store without sacrificing taste or nutrition.

Scroll to see the simple swaps you can make to lower your grocery bill amid inflation and tariffs!

1. Chicken

Walmart

Chicken remains one of the more affordable meat options, yet prices have still crept up steadily over the past few years. For instance, in 2019, shoppers paid an average of $1.47 per pound of fresh whole chicken. By the tail end of 2024, this increased to $2.06 per pound.

If chicken breast has been your go-to, you can try swapping it with thighs or drumsticks. These cuts are both more affordable and often more flavorful than white meat.

Or, for even bigger savings, consider buying a whole chicken. It's usually cheaper per pound and offers multiple meals' worth of meat once butchered. Save the carcass to make chicken stock, too!

2. Milk

Walmart

If you're a family that goes through multiple gallons of milk per week, you've probably felt the strain of rising dairy prices. Five years ago, one gallon of whole milk cost an average of $2.91; meanwhile, at the end of last year, the average price rose to $4.10.

This surge means it's worth looking into alternatives. Shelf-stable dairy and non-dairy milks, such as oat, almond, or soy, can often be found in bulk at lower prices. Not to mention, they tend to last longer, helping you cut down on food waste.

3. Eggs

Walmart

Eggs used to be a cheaper protein staple, but today, they're pricier than ever. The easiest way to decrease your spending on eggs each week is by trying egg substitutes, such as Egg Replacer.

Or, if you are baking, consider swapping eggs out for applesauce, mashed banana, or flaxseed mixed with water in your recipes, all of which can replicate the binding properties of eggs.

4. Coffee

Walmart

Those of us who are fueled by caffeine are also feeling the pain. Making coffee at home instead of visiting Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts used to be a foolproof way to lower spending. Now, even brewing a cup of Joe at home is getting quite expensive, particularly if you rely on single-serve pods.

To save, start buying ground coffee in bulk or switching to whole beans. You can also mix your coffee with creamer to stretch your supply or replace it with instant coffee, which may be more affordable over time.

5. Bread

Walmart

Whether you prefer white or wheat, the prices of both kinds of bread have increased. In order to cut back, you can begin baking your own loaves at home. It's actually a lot easier than it sounds and much cheaper in the long run.

Otherwise, if baking's not your thing, you can buy bread in bulk and freeze the extras to avoid any mid-week grocery store runs or waste. Using rice, potatoes, or tortillas in place of traditional bread is another way to lower the price of your meals.

6. Garlic

Walmart

Garlic is a kitchen staple, and many people agree that you can never have enough. Unfortunately, though, a lot of the garlic we buy in the United States is imported from China, meaning prices may soon go up due to tariffs.

For a cost-effective swap, you can try using garlic-infused olive oil, which adds the same flavor and lasts longer, or substitute leeks, onions, or shelf-stable garlic powder.

7. Avocados

Walmart

Not only are avocados expensive, but they're rarely sold ripe and ready-to-eat in supermarkets. So, if you buy them in advance and accidentally miss their ripeness window, you may wind up wasting a pretty pricey piece of produce.

Mashed chickpeas, seasoned edamame, or even hummus can serve as a creamy, versatile substitute in sandwiches and bowls. They're typically cheaper, have a similar texture, and are still nutritious.

8. Sugar

Walmart

Last but not least, it's time to think outside the box if you have a sweet tooth due to the climbing costs of sugar, particularly bulk and imported varieties. You can turn to natural sweeteners like mashed bananas, applesauce, or even maple syrup, which work well in baking, sauces, and drinks.
