Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time is already inspiring people with its diverse, female-led cast, mind-bending worlds, and powerful message to “be a warrior.” That’s why one teenager is raising money to pay for 1,000 girls to see the monumental movie.
Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s popular novel, this new retelling has a stellar cast of inspirational women including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and young Storm Reid. And 14-year-old Taylor Richardson wants as many girls as possible to experience the magic.
Explaining that she started her campaign because “representation matters,” Richardson told the hosts of Good Morning Americaon Wednesday, “I wanted all girls, especially girls of color, to know they can be whatever they want to be when they grow up and also can struggle and have flaws and still be successful in life.”
She said she thinks girls need to see this film because “it shows young, Black girls deserving a chance to be a part of the sci-fi cultural canon,” and because it’s “a fantasy film that is not about some white boys fighting evil, but about a Black girl overcoming it.”
With that in mind, Richardson set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of $15,000, which would allow her to buy a private screening for 1,000 girls.
This isn’t the first time Richardson has run a successful movie-related campaign. Last year, she raised more than $18,000 to send 1,000 girls in Jacksonville, Florida, to see Hidden Figures, a film about three Black women who changed the space race for NASA during the ’60s.
Perhaps she’ll inspire others to create similar initiatives or pay it forward in their own amazing ways.
