The Bachelorette’s Makeup Artist Dishes on How to Look Flawless While Making Out

While the ladies of The Bachelor house may not be getting any help when it comes to doing their hair and makeup, according to a season 20 vet, it turns out that the stars of The Bachelorette most certainly are: In fact, they have their very own makeup artist!

Meet Gina Modica, the woman making the ladies of Bachelor nation look impossibly gorge, night after night. Though Modica says her services were used sparingly at first, with the girls doing their own makeup for “regular” dates, she now handles their looks every. Single. Day.

Needless to say, that means she’s learned a thing or two over the years about how to maximize the staying power of the contestants’ makeup in any circumstance, like extreme heat (all those island getaways!), marathon make-out sessions, and tears galore.

If it’s lipstick that stays put even after smooches, Modica told Refinery 29 she tends to stick to Bésame Masterliner Pencils, ($22). “I really like Bésame’s — they stay really well and aren’t too drying,” she said. She prefers it over sticks or stains. “I’ve been really fortunate that the only makeup crisis that I’ve ever had to deal with, and I wouldn’t even call it a crisis, is people crying and kissing too much,” she told the outlet. “And when that happens I just run in and reapply the liner and fix the lips. I don’t worry about it too much,” she continued on. “It’s normal. When you’re kissing, you lose lipstick. It’s job security for me.” Touché!

When it comes to all those waterworks, Modica has a few tricks up her sleeves there too. “Luckily for me, Rachel doesn’t cry a lot, but I’ve found that water-resistant products as opposed to waterproof works best.” Modica says it’s Makeup For Ever Aqua Seal ($21) that she reaches for most: “I do mix [that] with eyeliners so they won’t move. It’s a great product to have in your kit if you have problems with a product staying put.”

For the rest of your face, the makeup guru recommends sticking to creams “and go light on the face product” to avoid makeup meltdowns in crying situations or extreme heat. “Foundations that claim to be waterproof are very drying. I use an airbrush system by TEMPTU that works great in any environment, and lasts for hours with very little touch-up” — as long as contestants don’t rub. “As long as you don’t touch your face, [it] will stay in place,” she quipped. “It’s better just to blot lightly. I never reapply powder in humidity. I just use [Kimberly Clark Scott Shop Towels] ($14) to blot and absorb the sweat.”

And the one product she avoids at all costs? Shimmery bronzer. “Everyone ends up looking orange and shiny on-camera, and it gets on your clothes and everyone else’s.”

From the ever-popular Bump-It to tasty Lip Smackers, these “wacky” products defined 2000s beauty trends. And while some were total game-changers, others were downright disasters. Despite this, all 10 of these “wacky” beauty products definitely shaped who we are today and inspired our love for all things makeup, hair, skincare, and nails!

Scroll on to see the top 10 beauty products of the 2000s that we loved – and some we can't believe we ever used!

1. Hair Bedazzlers

The ultimate way to bling out your look, hair bedazzlers let you snap tiny, sparkly rhinestones into your locks for a very princess-meets-pop-star vibe. Whether you were channeling your inner Britney or just wanted some extra glitz for a girls’ sleepover, this wacky gadget made every strand shimmer.

Amazon

2. Bump-Its

Now this is a classic. Remember those commercials? Nothing screamed "2000s hair" quite like Bump-Its. They were plastic inserts that promised to give your hair (especially your bangs) that effortless poof without endless teasing. We look back at them now and cringe.

Reddit

3. Crackle Nail Polish

We wish this one still existed, TBH. Crackle nail polish was the edgy, rebellious older sister of your regular ol’ nail polish. It created a cool, shattered effect as it dried. Our favorite thing to do was to pick out a silver crackle nail polish to layer over neon pinks or oranges. It’s giving Avril Lavigne energy!

@violentlips

4. Lip Tattoos

Lip gloss, who?! Lip tattoos let you rock everything from pink zebra stripes to a glittery cheetah print on your lips. Why this existed, we don’t know, but they were definitely a fun novelty at the time.

Walmart

5. Makeup “Phones”

Claire’s took so much of our money in the 2000s for these little makeup-packed phones. Beauty met tech (kind of…) with these makeup compacts disguised as flip phones – because what’s more 2000s than touching up your lip gloss while pretending to take a call?

Amazon

6. Bouncy Blush

Not quite a cream, but not quite a powder, bouncy blush was a weirdly satisfying cheek color with a wacky, squishy texture. It made applying blush feel like playing with putty, which made our teenage hearts sing. Half the fun was just poking it in the pan between uses.

Amazon

7. Hair Crimpers

Somehow, hair crimpers snuck their way into 2000s beauty trends, all the way from the ‘80s. They were the go-to styling tool! With just a few squeezes of those zig-zag plates, your hair totally transformed – but if we tried one now, it’d totally make us look like Weird Barbie.

Amazon

8. Lip Smackers

Every 2000s kid had at least five Lip Smackers floating around in their backpack! We were loyal to the classic Dr Pepper, but the brand dropped many more wacky flavors like Coca Cola, Skittles, and Fanta. They truly weren’t just lip balms – they were status symbols at every sleepover and middle school lunch table. Bonus points if you had the jumbo ones.

Amazon

9. Hair Chalk

For those who wanted to be rebels (but didn’t want to totally upset their strict parents), hair chalk was the #1 way to bring bold, colorful streaks to your locks without major consequences. While it did give a cool effect, it really didn’t stay on your strands for very long.

10. Sun-In

You were so cool if you brought a bottle of Sun-In to the pool party. This lemon-infused lightening spray was the ultimate DIY highlight hack, but looking back now, all it did was damage our strands. We’ll never forget that smell, either!

Today, many at-home libraries look a lot different than they did just a decade ago.

First, thanks to inspiration and ideas shared by avid readers on social media, classic shelving has gotten a major upgrade, with plenty of people using built-ins, DIY-ing shelving to look like built-ins, or displaying books in more unconventional stands.

Literature lovers are also upping their reading game by incorporating warm lighting, cozy chairs, and other viral bookworm accessories.

What's arguably the most new, though, is the introduction of colorful "sprayed edges" on the books themselves. Perhaps it goes against the classic mantra, "Don't judge a book by its cover," but this trend has taken over the reading scene. This is why!

Here's everything you need to know about sprayed edges books!

What are books with sprayed edges?

Books with "sprayed edges" have their page edges painted, which adds a bold pop of color or reveals an illustration when the book is closed. They're typically designed to complement the cover and invite you into fictional worlds before you even crack a story open.

So, this extra detail has become extremely popular among readers everywhere. It turns any ordinary book into a visual statement and provides book lovers with tons of new opportunities to display their collections.

In fact, some people have opted to begin exhibiting their books with the edges facing out as opposed to the spine. With this technique, your shelving practically transforms into a mosaic of art instead of just a storage area.

When did books with sprayed edges start?

It's important to note that while viral fantasy and romance novels have popularized this trend recently, the concept of decorating book edges has been around for centuries.

In 17th-century England, for instance, a technique called fore-edging, or painting watercolor scenes along the edges of books, became popular. Some novels have even been adorned with gold or silver leaf.

More on books with sprayed edges:

Nowadays, the process of mass-producing books with sprayed edges has been streamlined, with publishers using high-powered machines to keep up with the demand. Plus, countless readers have been DIY-ing this effect for years, using tools ranging from spray paint to markers.

The result makes books feel more exclusive, and they're often even labeled as such, being called "deluxe" or "special editions."

If you want to get your hands on some, you're in luck, too. Various highly anticipated books are being released this year with sprayed edges, including The Lotus Shoes by Jane Yang, Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, and Last Twilight in Paris by Pam Jenoff (Signed B&N Exclusive Edition).

Additionally, even some older bestsellers will get their turn to shine with the release of special editions featuring sprayed edges.

Kristin Hannah's historical fiction novel The Nightingale, for example, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a deluxe edition. Readers won't just get sprayed edges but also a new dust jacket, a gold-foil stamped cover, and a ribbon bookmark.

Still, while social media platforms have helped fuel the demand for colorful, eye-catching books, not every work will get such special treatment. Since sprayed edges add to production costs, publishers have to carefully choose which titles get them.

Nonetheless, one thing is certain: fantasy, romance, and speculative fiction books tend to feature them the most, as readers who enjoy these genres really seem to appreciate the decorative aesthetic.

When it comes to makeup, everyone has their personal preferences. But just like how our appearances change as we age, so should our application techniques.

Let's be clear about one thing: getting older is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, more and more women nowadays are fighting against societal norms and embracing signs of aging (hello, Pamela Anderson!), which is amazing.

Nonetheless, if you're going through the trouble of putting on makeup for work every day or getting dolled up for a date night, the last thing you probably want to do is age yourself unintentionally.

If you've had the exact same makeup routine since you were a teenager or twenty-something, it may be time for an update. Here are some common makeup mistakes to avoid that may be adding years to your appearance.

Scroll to see the makeup mistakes that are totally making you look older.

1. Not Using Primer

Kaboompics.com

A good primer helps create a smooth base for makeup application, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and allowing your products to glide on effortlessly.

So, if you skip this critical makeup step, your products may just settle into any fine lines (think on your forehead, near your mouth, or at the edges of your eyes).

There are plenty of primers available on the market that offer various effects, such as a matte finish or a dewy glow. We recommend opting for a formula that's specifically designed for mature skin to fill in and blur fine lines.

2. The Finger Application Method

Ron Lach

Beauty blenders and other modern makeup tools obviously weren't around decades ago. Even so, the classic finger application method may be aging your skin.

While using your fingers can be a quick and convenient way to put on products like foundation or blush, it can transfer bacteria to your face. Moreover, tugging and pulling at your skin with your fingers on a daily basis might contribute to skin sagging over time.

The best way to blend your makeup is with a damp sponge. By keeping your sponge moist, you'll get a smoother application and prevent the tool from soaking up too much product.

3. Overdoing Your Brows

Tima Miroshnichenko

It's true that eyebrows can thin as women age, and defining your brows may help brighten your face and make your eyes seem bigger.

At the same token, though, you should avoid overdoing it. In 2016, heavily outlined and filled-in eyebrows were extremely "in." Contrary to this trend, mature faces benefit the most from a more natural look.

You can definitely still use an eyebrow pencil to fill in any sparse areas. Just avoid making your brows look too bold or heavy. Lighter, feathered strokes are the way to go, as you can always build up the pigment gradually.

Then, once you're satisfied with the shape, lock your brows in place with a clear brow gel.

4. Going Heavy With Eyeliner

Anna Shvets

If you want your eyes to appear more open and awake, light eyeliner should be your go-to.

Heavy, black eyeliner, especially on your lower lash line, may cause your lids to look tired or droopy. So, to maintain a fresher appearance, say goodbye to eyeliner under your eyes. Then, for your upper lash line, swap out your black liner for a softer shade of brown.

You can even use a smudge brush to blend it out as opposed to going heavy-handed with a thick line from the start. This will leave you with a more subtle and lifted effect.

5. Using The Wrong Under-Eye Concealer Shade

RDNE Stock project

If you regularly wear makeup, then concealer is probably a staple in your routine. However, many women make the mistake of using a concealer shade that's too light and think it'll erase any under-eye darkness.

Unfortunately, the opposite tends to happen. Instead of brightening up your under-eye region, the area will look chalky, and your fine lines and dark circles may become exaggerated.

As a rule of thumb, you should select a concealer that's only one shade lighter than your skin tone to achieve a natural brightening effect. Warming up the product on the back of your hand can help you blend it more smoothly as well.

6. Applying Plenty Of Powder

ANTONI SHKRABA production

After you apply your liquid products, it may seem logical to lock your makeup in with a setting powder. However, a little goes a long way, and using too much can quickly make you look older by giving your skin a drier appearance and accentuating any fine lines.

Our advice? Skip compact powders and use loose powder instead. Also, use a big powder brush to apply it rather than flat fabric puffs to avoid caking the product onto your skin.

7. Being Heavy-Handed With Blush

Bruno Miranda Photography

It's natural for our faces to slim out as we age. In response, many women rush to apply more blush in hopes that their cheeks will appear fuller and more youthful.

Yet, when applied too heavily after the rest of your makeup is finished, blush can have the opposite effect. The bright pigment may draw even more attention to mature cheeks and cause you to appear older.

The key is to apply a cream blush earlier in your routine, specifically before you put on any foundation. This will make your skin look rosy and glowy without the flush becoming too overwhelming.

8. Using Dark Contour Shades

Alena Darmel

Finally, there's nothing worse than trying to contour your face and realizing you've been left with a ton of dark, unblended streaks. Improper application techniques are sometimes the culprit. But, more often than not, the issue is that you're using a contour shade that's simply too dark for your skin tone.

Instead of sculpting your face, the darker hue can appear harsh and sunken, making you look more mature. So, if you want to contour, make sure you select a product that's only two shades darker than your true skin tone, with a formula that's lightweight.

The 1980s were a golden era for sitcoms, delivering some of the most iconic TV shows of all time, like Full House, The Golden Girls, and Family Ties. But for every smash hit that became a household name, there were also plenty of other TV shows and sitcoms that wound up fading into obscurity.

Let's take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and revisit 10 forgotten '80s sitcoms that you probably haven't thought about in years.

Lorimar Telepictures

1. The Hogan Family

This sitcom had its fair share of drama, both on and off the screen. Originally titled Valerie, it starred Valerie Harper, who played a devoted mother raising three teenage boys while her husband, played by Josh Taylor, was frequently away for work.

However, after Valerie was fired over a contract dispute following the second season, her character was written off, and the show was rebranded as The Hogan Family, with Sandy Duncan stepping into the motherly role. It ran for a total of six seasons and starred a young Jason Bateman as one of the teen sons.

Mort Lachman & Associates

2. Kate & Allie

This sitcom was a refreshing take on family life in the 1980s. It followed two childhood friends who moved in together after getting divorced to raise their children under one roof.

Starring Susan Saint James and Jane Curtin, Kate & Allie balanced heartfelt moments with sharp humor and made for a compelling sitcom. It proved that family could be redefined in unconventional ways and became a success for CBS, running for six seasons.

Lorimar Telepictures

3. She's the Sheriff

In this sitcom, a widowed mother of two named Hildy Granger, played by Suzanne Somers, unexpectedly finds herself taking over her late husband's job as sheriff despite having no background in law enforcement.

The show humorously followed Hildy as she stumbles through her new role for two seasons. Then, it was pulled from the air.

20th Century Fox Television

4. Mr. Belvedere

In Mr. Belvedere, the life of the Owens family is turned upside down after they hire a sharp-witted British butler named Mr. Belvedere, portrayed by Christopher Hewett. He brings a mix of sarcasm and sophistication to the household and forms a bond with the Owens family as he helps them navigate everyday dilemmas.

This sitcom had steady ratings and a dedicated audience, so it ran for five seasons on ABC from 1985 to 1990.

Warner Bros. Television

5. Eight Is Enough

This heartfelt family sitcom was based on the real-life experiences of columnist Tom Braden, who raised eight children. It served as a launching pad for several young actors and ran for 112 episodes, capturing the joys and challenges of having a big family.

However, rising production costs and declining ratings led the sitcom to have an abrupt end. It never returned for a sixth season.

MCA Television

6. Out Of This World

Even though it ran for four seasons and nearly 100 episodes, Out Of This World remains one of the more forgotten sitcoms of the '80s. It follows a teenage girl who learns that her father is an alien on her thirteenth birthday and is given superpowers.

While the premise had potential, the series never gained a lot of traction or reached the same level of recognition as other teen sitcoms. It faded away in 1991.

Touchstone Television

7. Empty Nest

Empty Nest debuted in 1988 as a spin-off of The Golden Girls and centered on Dr. Harry Weston, a widowed pediatrician adjusting to life without his wife. The idea was actually first introduced in a 1987 episode of The Golden Girls as a backdoor pilot, but the final version of Empty Nest looked quite different from its initial concept.

The show had trouble capturing the same interest as its predecessor and came under some scrutiny. Even so, it lasted for seven seasons and spawned its own spin-off, Nurses.

Columbia Pictures

8. Designing Women

Airing from 1986 to 1993, Designing Women followed the lives of four women and one man as they ran an Atlanta-based interior design firm. The sitcom started off with solid ratings and had a loyal fan base, but frequent time slot changes by CBS caused a steady decline in viewership.

A fan campaign temporarily saved it from being canceled. Nonetheless, in 1992, it was moved to the infamous Friday night "death slot" and couldn't recover.

DLT Entertainment

9. Too Close for Comfort

Too Close for Comfort has faded from pop culture memory even though it ran for six seasons. Inspired by the British series Keep It in the Family, the show starred Ted Knight as a work-from-home cartoonist navigating life in San Francisco with his wife and two adult daughters.

It mostly followed a lighthearted family sitcom formula, but it did stir controversy, most notably with an episode depicting Oakland's crime issues that sparked backlash from local politicians.

Sony Pictures

10. Square Pegs

Finally, before Sarah Jessica Parker became known for her romantic Manhattan escapades, she starred in Square Pegs. This show follows best friends Patty and Lauren, who are two socially awkward high schoolers struggling to fit in.

As they attempt to climb the social ladder, they encounter a variety of characters. Spoiler alert: they never truly fit in with any of them and continue to defy typical high schooler norms. Square Pegs only ran for a total of 20 episodes.
