The Best Fashion Brands to Buy Now and Resell Later, According to the Pros

All that hustle has finally paid off: Be it a new gig or promotion, your new girlboss status means you finally have a bit of extra cash to lay down on a designer bag or some hot-off-the-runway threads. Treat yo’self, girl! Every sartorial purchase can be considered an investment of sorts, but in the case of designer duds, you’ll want to take a more studied approach. Quality is a major consideration, but resale value can be just as important — especially if you’re hoping to switch up your wardrobe on the regular, in true It-girl fashion. We tapped the pros at TheRealReal and Vestaire Collective for the lowdown on which brands will give you the most bang for your buck.

The Hard Facts

According to Vestaire Collective, there are three main metrics that make a good fashion investment:

  • Quality: Look for pieces that demonstrate durability, good craftsmanship, and high-end materials. They’ll not only serve you well, but they give an item longevity in the marketplace too. Poor construction and flimsy materials, on the other hand, aren’t worth the cash — you’ll be hard-pressed to find a buyer for resell, and the value will likely plummet well below the price you paid for it.
  • Desirability: Buzzy items and brands retain higher resale value while they’re still hot. If you see every member of the street-style set sporting it, that’s a good sign.
  • Rarity: It’s all about supply and demand, baby. Limited availability of a brand or specific product increases desirability within the resale market.

These pillars of smart shopping should be the first things you consider when making a large purchase. But if you know those statement kicks or that OTT faux fur coat are so your style, then practicality be damned — go ahead and go for it, girl!

In addition to quality, desirability, and rarity, there are a few other things you’ll want to consider:

  • All fashion items aren’t equal. In regards to the type of pieces to invest in, it’s worth noting that product categories perform differently — the resale value of a dress or a piece of knitwear won’t have the same outcome as a handbag or pair of shoes. According to Levesque, there are four main categories that are worth the investment right now: heritage brands, iconic designs, luxury athleisure, and up-and-coming designers.

  • Hand it to the handbags. Vestaire Collective cites purses as being the strongest investment, recouping approximately 75 percent of their original retail value on average. This is, of course, dependent on the brand and its popularity when (and if) you decide to resell. Resale value of ready-to-wear sits around 40 percent, while shoes take an average resale value of around 57 percent. Noted.

  • Stay in on industry news. Another noteworthy piece of advice: Pay attention to the comings and goings of creative directors. They undeniably affect the mood and aesthetic of a brand at any given moment, and the arrival or departure of a creative director will impact the interest in a brand. This could mean an increase in value of previous, current, or upcoming collections. “Gucci has been on fire since Alessandro Michele took the reigns,” said Rati Levesque, Chief Merchant for TheRealReal. “If you invest in one of his current styles, you can earn back up to 75 percent of the original selling price on TRR.”

The Sure Things

Now that you’ve gotten a grasp on what constitutes a good investment, it’s time to focus in on the brands that will bring you the most bang for your buck later down the line. Understanding which lines perform the best in terms of ROI will help you make more informed purchases from the get-go — like whether to splurge on that Céline tote or indulge in a trendy Marc Jacobs crossbody.

In terms of heritage brands, Chanel, Hermès, Rolex, and Louis Vuitton are almost always a safe bet, making them particularly appealing to both new and seasoned buyers. “They’ll earn you on average 50 percent of the original purchase price,” she said. “Because these styles are so timeless, you can actually wear them for years before reselling and still earn a great ROI.” Saint Laurent, Céline, Balenciaga, and Burberry are other fashion houses to keep in mind. As this chart by Vestaire Collective points out, they consistently retain their value, and high-profile creative directors often create buzz, which ultimately results in desirability (i.e. Hedi Slimane’s move to Saint Laurent and the Phoebe Philo effect).

Too-trendy pieces — be it Miu Miu or Zara — don’t always stick, making them fall out of favor in your closet and the wider fashion world. This will undoubtedly affect their value — lack of demand ultimately means lack of cash flow. “Styles that are iconic to the designer are great to invest in. You can hold onto these longer and they won’t lose their resale value as more trend-forward styles from the same designer,” said Levesque. “Think iconic fit-and-flare dresses from Alaïa and classic plaid from Burberry. Timeless!”

Hermès’ signature Birkin bag is the perfect example. Vestaire Collective’s analysis shows that the resale of this wardrobe classic reached a peak resale value at a whopping 137 percent in 2015 — that’s pretty impressive. Chanel’s Boy bag and Céline’s Phantom bag are also top performers on the handbag front, while Burberry trenches consistently slay.

The athleisure movement is still going strong and shows no signs of slowing down. The trend is, however, taking on an increasingly elevated aesthetic as it becomes an essential component of the everygirl’s wardrobe and designers begin to pick up subtle cues from sportswear. “Think Moncler, Canada Goose, etc.,” said Levesque. “These styles sell quickly on our site and you can earn up to 80 percent of the original sell price.”

Though they might lack heritage status, there are some up-and-coming labels whose buzz and fine-tuned design make them worthy of your hard-earned cash. “Up-and-coming designers are always in demand. From Mansur Gavriel and Vetements to Loewe and Brock Collection, invest now, as these designers are on the rise!” advises Levesque. Once a brand becomes well established, early pieces can earn you some serious cash.

I’ve done everything in my power to try to alleviate my back painstretching, self-massaging, hot baths, self-cracking my bones (don’t come for me), yoga — but nothing has truly given me the relief I've been looking for more than the Theragun.

All great stuff, right? After seeing and reading lots of rave reviews about this beloved percussive therapy tool, I just had to put it to the test.

Can The Theragun Help With Back Pain?

More than anything, I was concerned with two major problems – back pain and muscle soreness – I hoped the Theragun would help with. I attribute a majority of my back pain to a slight bout of scoliosis along with an unfortunate compression fracture I experienced a couple of years ago. These two reasons are likely to have exacerbated my tech neck aches, too. I’m talkin’ stiffness around my entire neck and some chronically achy traps.

Piling on my passion for indoor bouldering only adds to the discomfort: sore forearms, lats, and calves and sharp knots along my shoulder blades. The sport requires that I put my body in all sorts of odd positions, use my muscles to sustain those unnatural stances, and brace for 6-foot falls (albeit safely, on well-padded floors). Needless to say, it all takes a physical toll.

After just a week of use and 5- to 10-minute-long sessions a day, the Theragun Prime has significantly lessened that burden and provided my back and upper body muscles with some super satisfying relief.

Here’s my full review, including what I loved and everything I didn’t.

Day 1

My trial began with lots of sharp pain between my shoulder blades, which I was worried about not being able to reach with the Theragun on my own without someone else to help me. My worries instantly melted away after giving it a go, though – the patented triangular handle design (which claims to help you reach “80% of your body with multiple hand positions”) helped me quickly locate the most painful points in between my shoulder blades. Not only was I able to accurately pinpoint my discomfort, even the lowest of the 5 available speed settings delivered immediate relaxation. I was shocked at just how powerful this tool was!

I felt like a crazy woman in my apartment, groaning alone out of relief, but it felt so good. I also noticed that my back felt warmed after use, which I observed as the improved circulation the Theragun claims to encourage.

Days 2-4

My shoulder blade pain carried on into day 2, along with some insane forearm soreness from bouldering. I took the Theragun to my arms at the lowest speed and found the same instant relief I did with my shoulder blades.

I repeated a routine of running the tool along my shoulder blades, entire back, and arms for days 3 and 4, too. By day 4, I could tell that the most painful points weren’t as sore as they were before I started my Theragun trial.

Day 5

Day 5 was quite the opposite, though. I had attended a concert the night prior, and I think standing hours on hard floors reawakened every stiffness, soreness, and sharp pain I had been experiencing before. I woke up feeling geriatric as ever (I’m freakin’ 25, for crying out loud!) and knew I’d have to try out the Theragun on my screaming lower back and sore calves.

My neck felt extremely tweaked, too, likely from sleeping on it in a less-than-ideal position (tummy sleepers, unite). I went at all of these areas with the Theragun’s wide-set dampener attachment as I had the 4 days before, but turned the tool up to a higher speed. Oh, it felt like heaven! Again, I was surprised by how powerful of a punch the tool provided. It felt like a luxe massage technique, all possible by my hands.

Targeting my body more globally felt really nice at the faster setting, up until I was hitting my neck. The tool had a very heavy vibration that viciously rattled my teeth, ears, and eyes, which honestly distracted me from the relief I was looking for in the neck and traps area.

Days. 6-7

I was met with sore legs from a long bike ride and even more bouldering-induced stiffness on days 6 and 7. I found similar relief to what I experienced the week prior and was able to relax really well after a long, activity-filled weekend. I also tested out the multiple attachments the Theragun Prime came with on my neck and traps, like the thumb and cone toppers, which are sharper-shaped to hit more specific trigger points. I found these more-targeted attachments way more effective than the rounder dampener and ball, which didn't do as great a job at getting into the deep-set knots I deal with.

Theragun Review: The Results!

While I can’t claim my back pain and sore muscles are entirely gone with the help of the Theragun Prime, I can say that they’re noticeably lessened after 7 days of consistent use. I think it’s a very effective way to relieve any pains and aches you may be dealing with, especially if you have tried all other avenues of pain reduction.

It was easy and intuitive to use myself, and I really enjoyed the range of relief I got from the tool, thanks to the customizable attachments and varying speed settings. The only quirk I didn’t quite like was the intensely distracting vibration that occurred in my head when I brought it up to my upper neck and traps.

At an original price point of $299 (it’s also HSA and FSA-friendly!), I certainly understand it can be a steep investment for some, but given that the average cost of a massage or chiropractic visit hits around $100 (sometimes more), I believe the Theragun offers comparable relief to those methods.

Plus, you can use it anytime you like, as opposed to having to wait weeks for an appointment. It definitely is not a dependable replacement for more serious structural or muscular issues (which experts can better address), but it’s certainly appropriate for tackling everyday tightness, soreness, knots, and more.

Considering the popularity of Alex and Spencer's relationship in 1923, it might surprise you to know Julia Schlaepfer was nervous to bring the "special" story to life with actor Brandon Sklenar. "I was a little nervous because I was like, 'This is such a big universe and I want [fans] to love it as much as they love 1883 and Yellowstone,'" she tells Brit + Co exclusively.

Here's what Julia Schlaepfer had to say about Brandon Sklenar, Alex and Spencer, and Harrison Ford in Brit + Co's exclusive 1923 season 2 interview.

"Brandon [Sklenar] and I, when we were filming [season 1] in Africa, we would talk all the time about how it felt like we were making this really secret little indie movie together because we were so separate from the rest of the cast," she says. "Everything was so new to us, we were in Africa, and so it kind of felt like a secret. It felt like a very personal thing."

She didn't quite realize just how special 1923 was until she finally got to see the show's opener. "I'll never forget actually, [when] our producer Michael Friedman showed us the opening credits for the first time," Julia adds. "We were in Malta and we were doing the swimming sequence and he was like, 'I have to show this to you guys because I don't think you know how special it is.'"

"Our names pop up right after Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and we all, like, cried together, and I think I was like, "Oh, this is so exciting and big,'" she continues. "It's been so special and I'm really glad that the fans like it."

But for the new episodes, Julia Schlaepfer and Brandon Sklenar "barely" saw each other.

Yep, after countless fan edits, I can confidently say fans love Alex and Spencer — but (to my utter heartbreak), Julia teases we'll see way less of her and Brandon onscreen together this time around after season 1 split up their characters in the finale.

"It was very separate," she says of filming the upcoming episodes. "I mean, we block shot as well, so we were all kind of coming in at different times to film, but no, we did not [see each other a lot...Season one we spent all our time together, this season we barely spent any time together. It was very much like, suddenly we were ripped apart. But that's what the characters are going through."

Now, this is a huge tease for what to expect from 1923 season 2 (and might even be a spoiler) because some fans' biggest questions are: What episode does Spencer get home in 1923 season 2? When are Alex and Spencer going to reunite?! Unfortunately, it looks like it'll take a bit before we see them together again.

Even though it was an "odd" and "isolating" thing, and a "totally opposite experience" from filming the first season, Julia says the split "works for the characters this season, you know. It was very helpful as an actor because that's what they're going through as well."

Fans can expect to see a whole new side to Alex in '1923' season 2.

Even though Alex is on her own, it was important to Julia that she still have that "sparkle" we all love. "It was about digging deep and finding a more scrappy side to her," she says. "It was tricky because I didn't want to lose Alex's sparkle, I didn't want to lose the vivacious, happy side of her, but she's going through something completely different. So bringing the core of who she is and what she stands for and how deeply she loves and how bravely she lives combined with, you know, the fear and the determination was, it was a really great challenge as an actor. But yeah, we see a lot more grit from her this season, I would say."

And not only does Julia love Alex's grit, but she's inspired by her ferocity.

"Since starting season one, I'm like, 'I have to live like that,'" she says. "She follows her happiness like so fiercely and I was like, 'Why aren't I doing that? What can I do to bring more joy to my life and to live as honestly as she lives?' I've learned a lot from her."

Use a Grocery List

The number one tenet of saving on your grocery bill is to make a list and stick to it. This goes hand in hand with meal planning and makes everything from budgeting to cooking a more streamlined process. Although it seems like a lot of upfront effort, think about it like this: Even if it took you one hour a week to plan — which, according to Investopedia, could help you save about $640 or more a year on food waste and other costs — that would save you about $12 an hour. For those who make $12-$15 an hour, the savings are like taking a paid week off of work!

Buy In Bulk On Sale Items

So many things freeze beautifully. When items that you use regularly are on sale, from bread to butter to meat, snap them up in bulk. Although the savings seems minimal, when you add it up over a year’s worth of purchases, the amount of money you keep in your pocket will be significant. Plus, if you buy in bulk, you’re always guaranteed to have your favorite ingredients on hand.

Stockpile In The Freezer Section

If you’re doing things right and stockpiling, then you’re going to make good use of your freezer. Although we want to eat our favorite fruits and vegetables year-round, buying things in season is significantly cheaper, which means that when these items are affordable and available you’re going to want to stock up. Even if you’re buying pre-frozen fruits and vegetables, you’re saving money, and the research shows that you’re not losing any nutrients by doing so.

Shop In Season

While you can most likely find your favorite items at your grocery store year-round, prices (and not to mention taste) will fluctuate greatly based on the season. In particular, if you’re buying tomatoes, berries, grapes, peaches, or asparagus out of season, you could really be hurting your grocery budget. Instead, opt for their frozen counterparts or wait until they are *naturally* back in the store.

Enjoy More Casseroles

Casseroles do not belong in the 1950s. In fact, they are every bit as valuable today as they were 70 years ago. Why? Because they’re a healthy and delicious way to stretch out pricier ingredients and feed more mouths. When I ended up in the ER for stomach pain my senior year of college I didn't know that six years later I'd be relatively pain-free. I out gluten, high-acid foods, and red meat, and started consistently buying stomach-safe foods like broccoli, sweet potatoes, and chicken, and my first thought was Is this what everyone feels like all the time?

  • 1 cucumber
  • 1-2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Grate your cucumber into your bowl: I like to use at least half the cucumber if not the whole thing!
  2. Next you'll want to get rid of all the water: I dump out the liquid in the bowl then soak up any extra with a paper towel. Don't be afraid to squeeze the cucumber out!
  3. Mix in your Greek yogurt: I prefer equal parts yogurt and cucumber, but you can play with the ratio until it's a mix you like. That's the best part about homemade recipes!
  4. Add in your lemon juice: I prefer to taste the lemon so I love to really add it in but you can keep it light, and even mix in a little salt or garlic powder for a different edge.
  5. Mix it all together and you're good to go! I store mine in a mason jar in the fridge and it's ready for me whenever I need it.
