The Color of Your Surroundings Can Affect How Much You Eat

It’s no secret we’re huge fans of color. It’s an aspect of sensory experience that enhances our lives and taps into our emotions in countless ways; a blue sky defines our image of the perfect summer day, and we get a sense of warmth and coziness from the vibrant orange of a crackling fire. We identify ourselves by the colors we choose for our clothing, our vehicles, and our home decor. I’m a cool winter babe with my turquoise eyeliner; you’re a royal purple goddess in your eggplant dress. You might never have given it much thought, but research has shown that a relationship also exists between color and your experience of food.

For years, the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University has conducted dozens of experiments around this concept of food and color, proving that when it comes to how much, how fast, and how healthily we eat, color matters. When the hue of a food contrasts with the plate it’s served on, for example, the visual difference heightens our perception of the amount of food. Therefore, we eat less of it. Fast food restaurants have long capitalized on the concept of the food-color connection, says researcher Brian Wansink in his book Mindless Eating($17). “They decorate for speed eating: bright lights … and a high-arousal yellow-and-red color scheme.” Food scientists have even pinpointed consumer beliefs about colors on food packaging. Foods presented in red packages give an impression of sweetness, while green or blue packaging implies health.

If all of this color science applies to the environment surrounding our food, what about the food itself? Is it possible to take the natural associations our brains make about color and use them to help us adhere to the healthy diet adage “eat the rainbow?” For good reason, this phrase has gained popularity among nutrition professionals. There’s no question that consumers need motivation to include more fruits and vegetables in our diet. Despite our best intentions, only one in 10 Americans takes in the recommended 1.5-2 cups of fruit and 2-3 cups of vegetables per day.

Dietitians attest that positive mental and emotional connections to healthy foods go a long way toward motivating us to eat more of them. Registered Dietitian Maya Nahra, founder of The Habit and Behavior Change Health Coaching Program, says, “Our emotions can be influenced by color and external environment. Surrounding ourselves with purposeful external factors that influence emotion will most certainly influence behaviors. Why not try this with the food environment?”

Sounds great! So where do we start applying this principle? Not everyone is due for a kitchen remodel, but if adding more color to your cooking or dining space is an option for you, feel free to break out the paint (or other colorful decorative items)! Consider what colors make you feel happy, upbeat, or content. Time and again, research has shown the connection between mood and food. It’s a merry-go-round of positivity: Happy people generally make healthier diet choices, which then fuel those good vibes even more. Likewise, try hanging images of colorful, healthy foods on the walls of your kitchen or dining area. They may provide the color association appeal your brain needs to prompt you to reach for fruits and vegetables.

Taking some time to consider your own thoughts and feelings about each individual color of the rainbow is another jumping-off point for making healthier choices more appetizing. (Plus, it’s a fun exploration of personal preferences!) Traditional cultural associations of various qualities with different hues may play a role in our perceptions (red for love, or green for growth, for example), but there’s also plenty of room for personal interpretation. Start by writing a list of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Alternatively, print a color wheel off the internet or pick one up at your local art supply store. What positive qualities do you associate with each color? Do you find orange energizing, yellow joyful, purple intriguing? Write these attributes down.

Once you’ve identified your positive associations, try keeping your list in a visible place. If you practice meditation, include your associations in a guided color meditation from time to time. Soon, these connections may take root for positive change in your diet. The flat brown of a candy bar may begin to look awfully boring next to the vibrant red of cherries or apples. And the thought of green as the color of life could draw your palate to a spinach salad instead of a burger at lunch. The more you build these positive perceptions, the easier reaching for the rainbow of fruits and vegetables becomes.

In less than 6 months, I experienced two devastating events that forced me to gauge my relationship with self care. Tough conversations with my inner circle made me aware that I needed to embrace my "soft girl era", but I didn't know where to start. On certain parts of TikTok, it looked like I needed to surround myself with new home decor or beauty buys, while other people implied it's about living a life that's free of stress.

To cut out the noise, I took a break from social media so I could ask myself what I need to thrive. This resulted in me making a temporary decision about my fertility journey, slowly axing out foods that disrupt my hormones, and choosing things that make me feel at peace in my mind, body, and soul.

Uncover 11 ways having a "soft girl era" can help transform your self-care!

1. It Can Help You Examine Your Relationship With Social Media & The News

Ketut Subiyanto/Pexels

Do you have a healthy relationship with social media and the news, or have you been doom scrolling? I'll be the first to say I've had to set strict limits for myself because it's been too easy to stay glued to gossip sites and what's happening in the world. While it's always great to be informed, there is a such thing as information overload that can affect us mentally and emotionally.

Make an effort to find activities to occupy your time sans scrolling endlessly on Instagram, TikTok, or other news platforms.

2. It Allows You To Be Honest With Yourself If You're An Overthinker

Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels

Have you been allowing overthinking to make you feel stressed? If so, you should try writing down or repeating a few phrases to help you calm down. They're such a big help if you have anxiety because they remind you that you can be present in the moment instead of existing solely in your head.

3. It Opens You Up To Asking For Help

Ron Lach/Pexels

This should be in all caps, but I don't want you to think I'm yelling at you. It's just, I know what it's like to be hyper-independent while embodying the traits of a "strong woman." But, there's some things you can't #GirlBoss or #LuckyGirlSyndrome your way out, and it can be devastating if you don't like asking for help maneuvering a tough event.

I'm still processing an emergency situation I was in after what was supposed to be a routine doctor's visit, so I've been out of my element whenever I lean on my family and friends for emotional support. I usually like to deal with sad or scary situations by myself, but not all things are meant to be shouldered by ourselves.

What I can tell you is that asking for help and receiving it makes life a little more peaceful because there's no extra burden of hurting while trying to portray a role society claims it loves.

4. You'll Become Comfortable Journaling Your Thoughts

Tonette Whitted/Dupe

I sound like a broken record, but I feel strongly about journaling your thoughts. It's a way of processing things that have happened and how you feel about them. Also, it can be a place where you create lists of goals, books you want to read, hobbies you want to try, and more!

5. You'll Give Yourself Permission To Rest

Cora Pursley/Dupe

If you can, push the pause button on being available to everyone for a couple of days. Even if you're an extrovert, it never hurts to occasionally stay in bed and do nothing. Take it from someone who has a hard time resting: you're not "lazy" if you're not always going somewhere or talking to someone.

It's completely fine to reset your mind, body, and soul.

6. You'll Begin To Do Nice Things For Yourself

Abigal Westlin/Dupe

Buying myself flowers is one of my favorite things to do in my soft girl era. Instead of waiting for a man to surprise me with a bouquet outside of Valentine's Day, I regularly adorn my home with tulips or sunflowers. They bring a touch of beauty and greenery to my space which helps on WFH days that feel challenging.

7. It's A Great Way To Rediscover Your Love Of Reading

Daniela Lara/Dupe

Can you think of the one book that makes you laugh, smile, and cry tears of joy? If so, that's the book you'll want to keep near your nightstand. It'll help you break up with your dependence on screen time while also giving you a chance to let your imagination fly. The added bonus is that you'll fall back in love with reading!

8. You'll Genuinely Find Ways To Nourish Your Body.

Payton Butler/Dupe

Being a soft girl isn't just about looking good or reaching for fun things, it's also about nourishing your body with healthy meals. Sometimes we eat and drink things that our digestive system doesn't like, so I'm recommending that you make small changes to your meals.

You can create your own Mediterranean bowl à la Cava or aim to eat more fruits and veggies during the week. Whatever you choose, just remember to start small!

9. You May Even Adopt A Sober Lifestyle

Sivan Weitz/Dupe

Whether you know it or not, there's great joy in grabbing a non-alcoholic beverage with your bestie in the city. You can catch up about life, share your dreams or whatever's troubling you, and sip the greenest beverage that beats the idea of eating green eggs and ham. That's right — I'm talking about matcha.

Is it the pretty green hue we can't stop staring at or does it really taste that good? Let's compromise and say it's both!

10. Solo Activities Won't Feel Daunting

Thyra Morton/Dupe

You don't have to be the next Frida Kahlo to enjoy a paint class! I personally like to engage in coloring or painting because it helps me find something else to focus on. Though it seems simple, the art of having a fun hobby you're not trying to perfect or gain profit from sparks your inner kid's joy.

11. The Beach Will Actually Feel Relaxing For Once

Sash Gabriel/Dupe

You deserve a mini vacation that includes putting beach towel down on hot sand near the ocean so you can read your newest TBR pick. It's soothing feeling the sun on your skin while a gentle breeze blows which is why I recommend everyone try to experience it a few times per month.

The 1923 season finale probably left you with a lot of emotions and a few questions thanks to its emotional end. Namely: Is there a season 3 of 1923 coming out? Here's everything we know about whether there will be a third installment of Taylor Sheridan's hit show. Plus, the other Yellowstone spinoffs you can look forward to!

Here's everything you need to know about whether 1923 season 3 is coming.

Is there a season 3 of 1923 coming out?

Paramount+ hasn't officially confirmed or denied that 1923 season 3 is coming, but it sounds like season 2 was the final installment.

“It’s bookend," Brandon Sklenar told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude.”

Taylor Sheridan also called 1923 a two-part narrative in an interview with Deadline. So it looks like the 1923 season finale is also a series finale!

Who's in the 1923 season 3 cast?

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

If there was a world in which we got a 1923 season 3, I'm sure we'd see the return of three of our favorites:

  • Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton: owner and protector of the Yellowstone ranch.
  • Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton: Jacob's wife and partner.
  • Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton: Jacob's nephew and John's father.

What happened to Alex and Spencer in 1923?

The end of 1923 saw Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) give birth to another Dutton baby (all but confirmed to be John Dutton II, the father of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III) before succumbing to the effects of hypothermia. She dies in Spencer's (Brandon Sklenar) arms, and he goes off with Jacob (played by Harrison Ford) to enact revenge on Donald Whitfield. The Duttons kill Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) and set his home on fire.

And as the narration from Isabel May's Elsa Dutton tells us, Spencer never married again. And 45 years later, he lies at her grave and seemingly passes away. The very end of 1923 reunites the couple in a dreamy, heavenly party where they can dance together forever.

Julia told USA Today how special is was for her that Alex got a spot in the Dutton graveyard, saying, "It's such an honor. I know that everyone will be so upset about being a part of the Dutton family cemetery."

What is the next series after 1923?

There are a few TV shows you can watch after 1923, but there are also some more Yellowstone spinoffs on their way!

  • The Madison follows a New York family who now live in central Montana's Madison River valley. The cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, and Beau Garrett.
  • A spinoff about Yellowstone's Rip and Beth is in development.
  • 1944is also in development, and is sure to show off the Yellowstone ranch the tail end of World War II. We're sure to see the return of Spencer Dutton and John Dutton II, just played by different characters.

Um, Julia Schlaepfer Told Us Spencer & Alex Would "Barely" Reunite Before '1923' Season 2 Premiered

We finally know who The White Lotus killer is — and who didn't make it out of their vacation alive. We spent all of last week thinking about the possibility of who'd survive the White Lotus season finaleon April 6, and while some of our theories were proven correct (cough cough the poison fruit!!!), there are more than a few moments that shocked us. Keep reading for Mike White's The White Lotus season 3 finale recap!

Here's the only White Lotus finale summary & ending explainer you need.

'The White Lotus' season finale is as wild as you'd expect.

Stefano Delia/HBO

White Lotus season 3, episode 8, "Amor Fatie" opens with Rick returning to the White Lotus and reuniting with Chelsea on the beach. Chelsea leaves Saxon behind to run to her BF, and Saxon's longing look has fans in a tizzy because it appears Chelsea (and her self-help books) finally broke through to him and he's craving real connection now...even though he's still haunted by the incestuous encounter with Lochlan. (No, I still can't believe that happened either). The memory is even worse when Lochlan says he only got Saxon involved because he's a people pleaser and basically didn't want Saxon to feel left out. I'm sorry Mike White, WHAT?!

Piper also finally admits that she didn't enjoy staying at the monastery, and that she does actually need her material comforts, evoking two different emotions from her parents: Victoria is happy, Timothy is not. When Lochlan tells his dad he could live without money, the Ratliff family patriarch sets a plan into action, making the family (sans Lochlan) piña coladas with the poison pong pong fruit seeds mixed in.

After the family takes a sip, Timothy comes to his senses and stops them from drinking the rest...but in a twist of events, Lochlan makes a smoothie with the fruit seeds accidentally mixed in and nearly dies by the pool. But don't worry, he wakes up in his dad's arms, and then says he thinks he saw God. As one TikTok user put it, "him not cleaning the blender out is so youngest brother core."

What are people saying about The White Lotus finale?

HBO

Fans are happy with a standout moment from Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate's last dinner at The White Lotus, where Laurie admits how sad she's been the whole vacation. After explaining that work, romance, and even motherhood haven't been able to fill the void she feels, she reveals their friendship is what gives her life meaning.

"Pleases me greatly to hear Carrie Coon got the Meghann Fahy finale moment," @burritoprophet jokes on X, references Meghann Fahy's standout scene from The White Lotus season 2.

"Meghann Fahy's monologue in s2 and Carrie Coon's monologue in s3...Mike White is a f—ing legend," @contaemplative adds.

Meanwhile, Gaitok tells Mook he knows who robbed the hotel boutique, later low-key confronting Valentin, who begs Gaitok not to report the crime. And after Belinda and Zion received $100,000 from Greg in last week's episode (to help Belinda start her own spa business), they actually get him to send $5 million. And Belinda is ready to get out of town. I would be too, TBH.

How does The White Lotus season 3 end?

Fabio Lovino/HBO

But the White Lotus season finale comes to a head when Jim and Sritala Hollinger show up at the resort and Jim antagonizes Rick, saying awful things about his mother. Chelsea tries to stop Rick from retaliating, but when he notices the couple's bodyguards aren't around, he ends up shooting Jim in the chest before learning he was Rick's father.

When the bodyguards and Rick end up in a shootout, Chelsea gets hit by a stray bullet and dies. PAUSE. This is, without a doubt, the saddest part of the whole season for me. Chelsea was literally the one person I wanted to make it out alive, and the look on her face as she dies (along with her tears) seem to show that even though "in the end Rick finally saw her as his soulmate, I can tell she finally saw he wasn’t," according to one TikTok comment, with another comment calling the heartbreaking moment "brutal."

But it doesn't end there. Rick tries to carry her body away but ends up getting shot by Gaitok. Turns out Rick and Chelsea will be together forever after all. Their bodies get taken off the island as Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate comfort each other after the shooting, and the rest of the characters look toward the future.

Belinda and Zion leave the White Lotus on a private boat while the Ratliffs return to North Carolina, with Timothy promising they'll get through future trouble as a family. We didn't get to see the fallout of their financial troubles IRL, but who knows. Maybe this will play into The White Lotus season 4.

Is season 3 of White Lotus over?
