The Science Behind Being Hangry + What to Do About It

Here’s an all-too-familiar scenario: Due to circumstances beyond your control, you end up skipping lunch and are left with a case of the grumbles. Uh-oh. With an empty stomach, simple requests — even friendly small talk from coworkers — may result in you snapping. Not because you’re necessarily mad at these said individuals, but simply because you’ve fallen victim to the Hangry Monster. While we may not be certified health experts, we do know that the combination of being hungry and angry is one that should be avoided at all costs.

According to a recent article reported by CNN, the science of hangry ultimately boils down to the processes happening inside your body. A quick overview reveals that everything you put into your body (carbs, proteins and fats) is digested into simple sugars, which are then distributed to vital organs and used for energy. In a nutshell, when your blood sugar falls, it can become increasingly difficult to concentrate. As a result, you may make careless mistakes and, in some instances, even lose your cool. Hence the term hangry.

Hunger and anger are often caused by common genes, which then produce neuropeptide Y, “a natural brain chemical released into the brain when you’re hungry.” Those with high levels of neuropeptide Y tend to exhibit higher levels of aggression. In other instances, the extent to which hangryness yields control over your body may be influenced by psychological factors like how well you handle aggression.

So how exactly does one go about combatting extreme hangryness? Not surprisingly, the best way to avoid hanger is to snack on something before the hunger pains hit. In other words, keep a stack of munchies in your desk drawer at all times. While a bag of Doritos may sound more appealing than an apple with peanut butter, it will likely leave you feeling more hangry than you did from the start. Solution: Aim for “nutrient-rich, natural foods” as opposed to your common junk foods, which will leave you with a crash-and-burn feeling later.

The next time you’re feeling hangry, grab a nutritious snack and put any serious, heated debates off until after your hanger has subdued.

How do you avoid becoming hangry during long stretches of time? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

When you're in between episodes of your favorite January TV shows, then there's nothing better than watching new January movies. (Also, I can't believe it's almost a new year already!! Where did the time go?!). Whether you're a tried-and-true movie theater goer, or you love nothing more than a movie night from the comfort of your own couch, these rom-coms, action movies, and horror flicks coming in 2025 are exactly what you need to add to your New Year's Resolutions.

Here are all the new January movies you can watch in 2025.

1. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl — On Netflix January 3, 2025

Netflix

Wallace and Gromit are back! Thank goodness, because there's no other way I would want to start a brand new year. This January movie sees Wallace's new "smart" gnome become way too smart — and a dangerous certain someone might be behind everything. Now Gromit has to battle the most sinister of forces to save the day.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl premieres January 3 and stars Ben Whitehead, Peter Kay, Lauren Patel, Reece Shearsmith, Diane Morgan, Adjoa Andoh, Muzz Khan, and Lenny Henry.

2. Better Man — In Theaters January 10, 2025

Paramount Pictures

This new movie is based on the true story of British popstar Robbie Williams. While examining his rise to fame and his time with boyband Take That, the movie also dives into the highs and lows of fame...all while presenting as a monkey. I'm going to be honest, this movie really confuses me. It's definitely a creative and unique concept, which I've been craving more of, but I'll have to see this movie before I can figure out how I feel!

Better Man premieres January 10 and stars Robbie Williams, Jonno Davies, Steve Pemberton, Damon Herriman, Raechelle Banno, Alison Steadman, Kate Mulvaney, Frazer Hadfield, Tom Budge, and Anthony Hayes.

3. The Last Showgirl — In Theaters January 10, 2025

Roadside Attractions

Pamela Anderson stars as Shelly, a showgirl who has to figure out what the rest of her life looks like when her show suddenly closes after 30 years. The Last Showgirl premieres January 10 and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, and Billie Lourd.

4. Wolf Man — In Theaters January 17, 2025

When Blake (Christopher Abbott), Charlotte (Julia Garner), and their daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) come across a dangerous and mysterious animal, they barricade themselves inside a farmhouse to stay safe. Unfortunately, Blake begins a strange transformation of his own — and puts Charlotte and Ginger in a whole new kind of danger.

One of Them Days premieres January 24 and stars Keke Palmer, SZA, Maude Apatow, and Janelle James.

7. Flight Risk — In Theaters January 24, 2025

Lionsgate

In this new January movie, Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery stars as a U.S. Marshall who must bring a witness to court and deal with the fact the pilot's really a hitman. (I can't help but wonder what Lady Mary would do in this scenario).

Flight Risk premieres January 24 and stars Michelle Dockery, Mark Walberg, and Topher Grace.

8. Inheritance — In Theaters January 24, 2025

IFC Films

Maya's life turns upside down when she learns her father used to be a spy...and then finds herself in the middle of an international conspiracy. No big deal!! Now Maya must evade dangerous hunters and stay alive long enough to find the answers to her questions.

9. You're Cordially Invited — On Prime Video January 30, 2025

Prime Video

Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell are starting 2025 with a bang! This hilarious R-rated rom-com follows Reese's character as she plans her sister's destination wedding...then realizes the venue has double booked them with Will Ferrell, a father who's determined that his daughter's (Geraldine Viswanathan) wedding go perfectly. When I say chaos ensues, I'm talking alligator wrestling, a zebra knocking over the cake, and strippers.

It seems like It Ends With Usnews just keeps coming, long after its August premiere — and Brandon Sklenar is adding his two cents in regards to the news of Blake Lively's lawsuit against co-star and director, Justin Baldoni. The 1923star shared his support for Blake on Instagram, joining an ever-growing list of celebrities standing with her. Here's what Brandon had to say, plus why it's so on-brand for him to say it.

Scroll to see how Brandon Sklenar shared support on Instagram for Blake Lively amid Justin Baldoni lawsuit.

Cindy Ord/Getty Images

On December 23, 2024, Brandon posted a screenshot of theNew York Times article on Blake's lawsuit to his Instagram story. The part of the article he shared includes the specific complaint Blake filed, and the star wrote "For the love of god read this" on the link out to the article. The Dropstar then tagged Blake and put a red heart emoji next to her handle.

Instagram/brandonsklenar

The post follows Blake's bombshell lawsuit, filed against Justin Baldoni for alleged sexual harassment and other claims. And Brandon's not the only It Ends With Us teammate that's shared their support for Blake. Colleen Hoover and Jenny Slatealso expressed their solidarity with Blake. And while it would be easy to jump on the Blake bandwagon after the lawsuit news dropped, these tree (Brandon included) made their support of Blake clear from the beginning. Many of the cast unfollowed Justin on Instagram, with instances like Jenny Slate dodging questions about Justin peppered throughout the press and promotional tour of the film.

Lia Toby/Getty Images

This also isn't the first time Brandon's spoken out about the "swirling" rumors and allegations tied to It Ends With Us. In August, the star of The Housemaid posted to Instagram, noting how hypocritical it is for people to "vilify" women like Blake Lively and Colleen Hoover and that it "detracts what this film is about." His full statement reads:

Hey everyone,

I wanted to take a moment and address all this stuff swirling online.

Colleen and the women of this cast stand for hope, perseverance, and for women choosing a better life for themselves. Vilifying the women who put so much of their heart and soul into making this film because they believe so strongly in its message seems counterproductive and detracts from what this film is about. It is, in face, the opposite of the point. What may or may not have happened behind the scenes does not and hopefully should not detract from what our intentions were in making this film. It's been disheartening to see the amount of negativity being projected online.

Someone very close to me has been struggling with a relationship that has mirrored Lilly's closely. I feel a responsibility to bring this to life and help spread that message further. Prior to my involvement in this film, she had not heard of the book. It was only then that she read it. She credits Colleens book and subsequently this film with saving her life.

Trust me when I tell you, there isn't a single person Involved in the making of this film that was not aware of the responsibility we had in making this. A responsibility to all the women who have experienced generational trauma - Domestic abuse - Or struggle with looking in the mirror and loving who they see. This movie is a harsh reality check for the men who need to get their s--t together and take responsibility for themselves and their actions.

This film is meant to inspire. It's meant to validate and recognize. It's meant to instill hope. It's meant to build courage and help people feel less alone. Ultimately it's meant to spread love and awareness. It is not meant to once again, make the women the "bad guy," let's move beyond that together.

All I ask is that before you spread hate on the internet, ask yourself who its helping. Ask yourself if your opinions are based in any fact. Or if you simply want to be a part of something. Let's be a part of something better together. A part of a new story being written for women and all people everywhere.

Lead with Love and please be Kind.

Brandon

While this story develops, I will say it's nice to see so much support for women speaking out about — and actively standing against – sexual harassment. And it's especially to see the men in their sphere doing much of the same!
