‘The Sisters Project’ Shows a Nuanced View of Muslim Women’s Lives

Ladies First highlights women and girls who are making the world better for the rest of us.

In the wake of President Trump’s election and a rising tide of nationalistic sentiment worldwide, many Muslims have been facing more hate crimes than ever. According to a story in Newsweek, over four percent of all reported hate crimes are targeted towards Muslims, even though Muslims are estimated to comprise only one percent of the population.

Rather than be ashamed or fearful, then-photography student Alia Youssef started her own photography project titled The Sisters Project which attempts to humanize and documents the lives of Youssef’s fellow Muslim women in Canada.

The idea came to Youssef in the fall of 2016 while she was listening to a guest lecturer discuss how the media tends to paint all Muslim women with the same brush. Youssef explains, “It resonated with me and I was tired of having false assumptions placed on me and defending the women of my religion constantly.”

Youssef decided to take her skills as a portrait photographer and begin documenting some of the Muslim women she was already connected with her in life, beginning with her own sister.

Since launching the project, Youssef has had the opportunity to document over 50 women ranging from an ESL teacher in Vancouver to a youth worker based out of Toronto. Each portrait captures the women in their own spaces or in a place that is meaningful to them and features a small interview to demonstrates the diversity of Muslim women’s stories and experiences.

“It’s important to have real authentic photographs of Muslim women in the media because the photos that exist now are not a representation of the majority of the population,” explains Youssef in an email with Brit + Co. “The reality is Muslim women come from all backgrounds, wear all different types of clothes, practice their faiths in different ways, and have diverse careers and passions.”

When Mehnaz isn’t busy being a full time Bachelor of Science student, an undergrad researcher, and a senior mentor with the FITF Peer mentorship program, she enjoys going to quaint neighborhoods, independent gelato shops, and strolling by a large body of water on a nice day. She is 21 years old, was born in Canada, and her favourite quality in someone else is when they put in the effort to learn things about her. This brought up an interesting question of how she feels others perceive her, and she told me “In most environments I find myself in (UofT, a lab, airplanes, other countries) I believe that I am perceived as a minority. Sometimes I think people see me as a token... a representation of the ‘Muslim woman’, almost like a prototype for how most Muslim women act, what they do, and what they aspire to be. “ Then I wondered on the contrary how she would like to be perceived, “I would like to be perceived as a capable, intelligent, confident person whose determination, perseverance and resilience amounted to any success I am fortunate to receive. Furthermore, I hope to one day be perceived as a kind, generous, philanthropic leader who just happens to be a follower of Islam and is a good role model.”

A post shared by The Sisters Project (@the.sisters.project) on

It has been important for Youssef to demonstrate that of the 850 million Muslim women worldwide, the monolithic image the media portrays is not the reality.

“Photography is how I’ve sought out the truth and looked outside of myself,” says Youssef. “Presenting those truths just happens to also be seen as activist. I’m not here presenting radical ideas. I’m here with an art project that shows real Muslim women living their real unapologetic lives.”

Since the project’s launch in 2016, feedback has been largely positive. Youssef shares that many young Muslim women have reached out to say they are inspired by the stories and women that have been featured.

But the downside to fighting for humanization in media is that whenever the project is covered, it attracts online comments that range from racist to sexist and Islamophobic. Youssef says, “I try and remind myself that the people who like the work learn something new and appreciate the message, and are usually not the ones writing comments.”

With 2018 on the horizon, The Sisters Project has a lot in the works. Youssef is planning a more extensive cross-Canada tour so that she can examine the regional differences of the Islamophobic experience in smaller cities and towns, and hints at one day having enough material to make a book. We can’t wait to see where The Sisters Project ends up!

If you're a 90s movies (and horror movies) lover, you might agree that nothing beats an old school slasher. I Know What You Did Last Summer, which stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Freddie Prinze Jr., premiered in 1997, combines everything we love about coming of age movies — friends, summer vacation, and drama — with just enough terror to send a chill down your spine. And just like the original, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer features some of the hottest names in Hollywood.

Everything you need to know about the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel movie, coming to theaters July 18, 2025.

Is there a 3rd I Know What You Did Last Summer?

Columbia Pictures

Yes, a brand new I Know What You Did Last Summer is coming to theaters this summer. But just because it's a new film doesn't mean it won't have plenty of nostalgia.

"There's lots of '90s in there, so get excited because the '90s are back again!" Jennifer Love Hewitt, who's returning for the movie, told People. "And there's lots of twists and turns. I don't think people are going to expect anything that's coming. It's a really fun ride."

"We approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy," writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson added. "All the things that you want to see in this movie, you're going to see in this movie."

"It's for them to make it their own and for me to stand by like a proud mom and say, 'It's yours now, take it and run and enjoy,'" she told People.

"When you get a group of young actors together, it can be a recipe for disaster oftentimes," Chase Sui Wonders added. "But everyone in this cast just brought it to the nth degree. We all got along so well. The chemistry between us was so fun and natural and seamless."

Do Revenge's Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing and co-writing alongside Sam Lansky.

The season 3 finale of The White Lotus dropped on Sunday, and fans around the globe are still grappling with how creator Mike White chose to wrap up the latest iteration of the dark comedy.

Spoiler alert: Timothy Ratliff did not end up murdering his family (although he planned to, chickened out and almost accidentally killed Lochlan, the one child he'd planned to save); Belinda accepted Greg/Gary's bribe after getting it up to $5 million and pulled a total Tanya on Pornchai, who wanted to start a spa with her; and the three girlfriends, Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn, all worked things out in the end. Oh, and Chelsea dies because of Rick – the one thing everyone didn't want to happen.

Chelsea, played by actress Aimee Lou Wood, quickly became one of this season's most lovable characters. However, due to her tragic death during the finale, it's pretty obvious that she won't be returning to The White Lotus for Season 4. So if you're already missing Aimee's iconic acting, we've got good news for you — there's another show you can binge right now to get your Aimee fix: Sex Education.

Prior to becoming a larger household name on The White Lotus, she actually played the character Aimee Gibbs in Sex Education, a Netflix series that came out in 2019 and ran for four whole seasons!

Aimee's portrayal as a popular high school girl who undergoes a lot of character growth throughout the show's four seasons even earned her a British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance. So, if you want to see more of Aimee in a completely different role than Chelsea on The White Lotus, buckle up and grab your popcorn. Here's what to know!

Everything to know about Aimee Lou Wood's Netflix series, Sex Education!

Who's in the 'Sex Education' cast?

Netflix

While Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee Gibbs) is obviously a star in Sex Education, the rest of the cast is actually quite incredible — including two Barbiefaves! Other cast members include:

After only two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Hulu renewed the series for season 5! I'm so excited that the show breaks a recent pattern of cancelling shows after the third or fourth season, giving us more time with our favorite characters, and I'm not the only one.

"Here we go again… my favorite set family. I’m coming home!" Selena Gomez says in an Instagram post, while the official Only Murders account made their own post, saying, "We had our lawyers call business affairs. Turned the 4 into a 5. #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding is coming back for Season 5!!"

In addition to the show entering production, the one and only Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy) just joined the cast. Iconic!

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 5, coming to Hulu soon.

Who's in the Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast?

Eric McCandless/Disney

The Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast features all our favorites, and some new faces! According to Dan Fogelman, “we can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” he tells The Wrap.

"I am so grateful that I have been surrounded by human beings that make me better, challenge me, remind me day after day that every moment is a gift," Selena Gomez says about working with Steve Martin and Martin Short. "That’s my pure joy. I thank god for the era I’m in. It’s been the best yet."

The Only Murders season 5 cast includes:

  • Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora: a true crime lover who begins her own podcast after getting sucked into a murder mystery.
  • Martin Short as Oliver Putnam: a theatre director and founder of the Only Murders in the Building podcast.
  • Steve Martin as Charles Hayden Savage: an actor and true crime lover who begins the Only Murders podcast with Oliver and Mabel.
  • Téa Leoni as Sofia Caccimelio: a woman who approaches the podcast trio after her husband Nicky goes missing.
  • Renée Zellweger
  • Christoph Waltz
  • Keegan-Michael Key

What is Only Murders in the Building season 5 about?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

We finally got our first details about Only Murders season 5 — and we're going in a direction I totally didn't expect. When Sofia visits Mabel and Charles in the season 4 ending, and asks them to find her missing husband, she's disappointed when they turn her down. And since Téa Leoni just joined the season 5 cast, it looks like she's not taking no for an answer.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman says in an interview with Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know...It’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

New York's underground is a wild space that we haven't really seen on Only Murders yet so I know we're in for one very interesting season — because if this show is going to go there, they're going to go there.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman told The Wrapwe can look forward to “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up," while Hoffman has gone on the record saying the new episodes will “hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now.”

When is Only Murders in the Building season 5 coming out?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

There's no Only Murders in the Building season 5 release date quite yet, but the show is in production! Considering we've had a new season over the last four years (with season 1 in 2021, season 2 in 2022, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2024), we're expecting to see season 5 in 2025. Stay tuned for the official Only Murders season 5 release date.

How many episodes are there in Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Only Murders in the Building season 5 will have 10 episodes total on Hulu.

Don't worry, if you're still crying over the Severance season 2 ending, I have good news for you. Severance season 3 is coming to Apple TV+! The show was renewed for a junior season after the season 2 finale and the news couldn't come at a better time. I need to see the Severance cast and characters happy!!! Keep reading for everything we know about the upcoming episodes.

Here's the latest news on Severance season 3, coming to Apple TV+ soon.

What are some popular Severance season 3 theories?

Apple TV+

During a panel at Bell Works in New Jersey (where the show is filmed), Britt Lower revealed a theory the whole Severance cast is "getting a kick out of [is] Ricken being a goat," she tells People. "I think that's everyone's collective theory. You never know."

Michael Chernus (who plays Ricken in the show) says that "people have all kinds of theories about Ricken that he's a goat or that he's an Eagan or he's part of the board. I think, you know, we don't see a ton of Ricken in season 2, so I think the fact that he isn't around much makes him seem very suspicious to some people."

Fans love getting caught up in the theories, but for the team behind-the-scenes, it's a little tricky to navigate. "You have to like take all that with a grain of salt and sort of appreciate that everybody has different ideas, but we have to have our own sort of clear idea of what we're doing that is independent of that," executive producer Ben Stiller says.

However, that doesn’t mean he turns a blind eye to online chatter, saying, “I'll read a theory and I'll be like, 'Oh I wish we were making that show because that sounds cool.' But generally, I have to sort of turn the other way," creator Dan Erickson agrees.

Is there a season 3 of Severance coming?

Apple TV+

Yes, Apple TV renewed Severance for a season 3 on March 21, 2025.

“Making Severance has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” executive producer and director Ben Stiller says in a statement. He jokes that, “While I have no memory of this, I’m told making season three will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple and the whole Severance team,” executive Adam Scott (who also plays Mark) adds. “Oh hey also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”

When is Severance season 3 coming out?

Atsushi Nishijima/Apple TV+

We don't have an official Severance season 3 release date yet, but we do know it won't take another three years for new episodes to come out. (We all remember the three-year wait between seasons 1 and 2).

During an appearance on New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, Ben Stiller promises that "the plan is not, definitely not" to release Severance season 3 in 2028.

Who's in the Severance season 3 cast?

Apple TV+

Based on the end of season 2, we can include the Severance season 3 cast to include all our favorite stars:

  • Adam Scott as Mark Scout: a Lumon employee leading his team in Macrodata Refinement (MDR). In the real world he's mourning his late wife Gemma.
  • Britt Lower as Helena Eagan/Helly R.: one of Mark's coworkers with a shocking outie identity: she's the daughter of Lumon's CEO.
  • Dichen Laman as Gemma/Ms. Casey: Mark's wife in the real world and the wellness counselor on Lumon's severed floor.
  • Zach Cherry as Dylan George: another of Mark's coworkers who's the first one to be awakened outside the office.
  • John Turturro as Irving Bailiff: a Lumon employee who works with Mark.
  • Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman: a severed Lumon employee who's the head of Optics and Design (O&D).
  • Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick: Lumon's Manager on the severed floor.
  • Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel: Lumon's manager during season 1 who lives as outie Mark's neighbor Mrs. Selvig.
  • Jen Tullock as Devon Scout-Hale: Mark's sister, who's pregnant in season 1.
  • Michael Chernus as Ricken Hale: Devon's husband and a self-help author.
  • Sarah Bock as Eustice Huang: the severed floor's new Deputy Manager in season 2.

What happens at the end of Severance season 2?

Apple TV+

The Severance season 2 ending is truly devastating. In the final moments of the episode, outie Mark and Gemma finally reunite in the moment we've been waiting literal years for. They decide to make their escape, but when they slip back into their innie selves, Mark S. decides he doesn't want to sacrifice himself for his outie. He stays with Helly at Lumon while Gemma (who had managed to escape, reverting to her outie self) looks on, screaming his name and beating on the door.

Where does Severance film?

Apple TV+

Severance has been filmed in locations like New Jersey's Bell Labs, as well as various locations around New York, including York Studios, Kingston, Nyack, Marine Park Golf Course, Ulster County, and Beacon.
