Fall's Buzziest New Thriller 'The Substance' Is Already Available To Stream

the substance movie

While I've been keeping up with all the buzz surrounding Demi Moore's The Substance, and definitely understood it was THE feminist movie of the fall, I remember opening X in mid-October, seeing an unhinged photo of Margaret Qualley as Monstro Elisasue, and thinking to myself, Wow, apparently I do not know what this movie is about.

If you're in the mood for a new, edgy horror movie that you can watch anytime of year, then do I have good news for you: The Substance is streaming now! Here's everything you need to know about the flick, including how to watch it this weekend because it will definitely make a great Halloween movie.

  • The Substance is streaming now, but it's also still available to see in theaters following its September 20 release date.
  • The movie follows an actress supposedly past her prime who takes matters into her own hands with a powerful serum called The Substance.
  • The cast includes Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid.

The Substance Release Date

The Substance is streaming on Mubi and is available on Fandango at Home. You can also see the movie in theaters now. The Substance premiered on September 20.

What is The Substance movie about?

Mubi

The Substance Plot

In Coralie Fargeat's new movie, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is a used-to-be A-lister who's horrified when studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid) fires her from her own fitness TV show. (The audacity!) When she learns about The Substance, a new drug that promises youth and beauty, she immediately buys in.

A single injection and suddenly she's Sue, a twenty-something (played by Margaret Qualley) who's exactly what Hollywood is looking for. There's just one rule: you can only spend a week in each body at a time or things go very, very wrong.

Who's in the cast?

Mubi

The Substance Cast

The cast of The Substance includes all-star names like Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid.

What is the meaning behind The Substance?

Mubi

The Substance confronts all the different pressures placed on women: to look young, to act mature, to constantly reinvent yourself. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer-director Coralie Fargeat explains how Margaret's Monstro Elisasue "represents the monstrous part that we try to hide so much because we feel that we can't adapt or fit."

The end of the movie, in which (spoiler!!) Elisabeth basically melts into a pile of flesh on top of her Hollywood Walk of Fame star, frees her from any and all expectations. "It’s the first moment where she’s able to love herself. It’s the moment she sees herself and it’s not disgust, but in fact it’s as if she’s seeing her true self for the first time," Coralie says. "There’s self-indulgence, tenderness. It’s the first time she looks at herself in the mirror and doesn’t criticize herself. She decides, okay, I’m going to go out there, this is me, I have my right to have my place in the world."

Severanceis the beautiful question mark of a show I'm so happy to come back to...but honestly what the heck is going on?! The hit Apple TV+ show returned last week, and I really need some answers after that bombshell season 1 finale and that season 2 opener. From the scary numbers to that "She's alive!" moment to what the heck is going on with Helly, there's a LOT I wanna understand.

So, if you're like me, here are all the questions I'm dying for Severance season 2 to answer...ASAP. (Oh, and major spoiler alert!)

Scroll to see all the questions I hope Severance actually answers this season!

Apple TV+

1. Seriously, what is the data they're refining?

The "scary" numbers have to be addressed. We've watched them wiggle on screen, being dragged to their little boxes and "refined" — but what are these numbers? And why do they need to be refined? And what does refining them actually do? I really need to know!

Apple TV+

2. What's the deal with the goats?

No, but will we ever get an explanation for those? It felt so random? I can't stop thinking about them?

Apple TV+

3. Is Gemma actually alive?

Mark's "She's alive!" moment in season 1 was very Dr. Frankenstein, so it made me wonder...is Gemma actually alive? Or is something more sinister going on there? Did they fake her death before Mark decided to get severed? Is she actually a reanimated corpse? Is all this a ploy to ultimately reanimate (and essentially resurrect) the Egans? Where is Gemma?!

Apple TV+

4. What was Irving painting? And why?

When Innie Irving entered Outie Irving's life, he was painting a dark hallway at Lumon that lead to an elevator. Where is that hallway? And why would his Outie know about the inner workings of Lumon? What does it all mean?!

Apple TV+

5. Why did the "Innies" decide to return to Lumon?

After everything they went through, it seems odd to me that all four Innies would find their way back to the office.

Apple TV+

6. Why did Helly R lie?

When all the Innies got together to talk about what they saw on the outside, Helly R made it a point to lie about what she saw — or rather, who she is. Did she lie because she doesn't want her friends to know she's actually an Eagan? Or did she lie because she's actually Outie Helly going undercover? Or something else I haven't even thought of?!

Apple TV+

7. How long has it actually been since the uprising?

Mr. Milchick told them it'd been five months since the rebellion, but I'm not so sure. Why would Lumon suddenly be honest with the Innies? How could they prove that time has actually passed? Why does it feel like the rebellion happened and suddenly they're just back?

Apple TV+

8. No, but why was Ms. Cobel so obsessed with Mark?

Lumon clearly used this as a scapegoat for Ms. Cobel getting fired, but it is really weird that she was so clued into Mark specifically. Why not any of the other Innies? Is it solely because of whatever is going on with Gemma? Is there something special about him? I need answers!

Apple TV+

9. What was that flash of Gemma on Mark's computer?

Does this tell us anything about the data they're refining? Is Mark refining Gemma's data? Did that flash even actually happen? WHAT is going on?!

Apple TV+

10. WHY is a child working there?!

No, but actually...why? Where did this child come from? And what is she doing here? And aren't there child labor laws that prevent this kind of thing?

Whether she’s choosing the perfect ‘fit for a movie premiere, choreographing a music video, running a marathon, or sparking viral TikTok trends like “I don’t want it,” Anna Sitar brings authenticity, humor, and a genuine positivity to everything she does. It’s no wonder she has built a community of nearly 12 million followers on TikTok, or as she calls them, “friends,” and more than a million on Instagram.

Anna has always been passionate about staying true to herself and maintaining authenticity in her content creation. By doing so, she’s fostered a community that connects with her genuine self. Over time, she’s discovered various tools and techniques that help her share her best creative ideas with her audience. Anna attributes her ability to bring her creative visions to life in a way that represents her, to having full creative control when working with tools like Photoshop.

10 million new friends

Anna first learned about Photoshop in high school. It fueled her passion for bringing her creative visions to life. Then, at the beginning of her grad school career, an exciting new opportunity to express herself came along when a friend told her about this new app called TikTok that was blowing up.

Anna was getting a masters in film and television production in Los Angeles, which, she says, “was a full 180 switch” after graduating in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

“My mom and dad always instilled in me that you should take chances while you're young,” says Anna, who has always had a passion for multimedia.

She started playing around and making content on TikTok that felt natural to her creativity and sense of humor. Six months later, COVID hit, and she was sent back home to Michigan to study online.

“I was like, ‘you know what? I should really try this TikTok thing,” Anna recalls. It marked the beginning of her journey to establish herself as a content creator and commit to producing content consistently on the platform. She started doing fashion and makeup GRWM videos, and. music became a big inspiration for her during this. “I would create morning musicals where I make a music video out of my morning routine. Then, I started making these “I don't want it” videos,” she recalls, which ultimately took off as a major social trend.

While she says she was “mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to be some director's assistant for the next 10 years,” before she knew it, she had over 10 million friends on the app.

“It was such an incredible way to not only connect with people, but to share creativity and feel so freely self-expressive too. I'm so happy to be here,” she says. “TikTok reignited that creativity that I had as a kid,” she told us.

It’s all about the (creative) process

Anna admits that she’s not really a planner. “My mom always jokes, ‘I get my best ideas when I'm sleeping,’ and I feel the same way,” she says. Her creative process always starts with whatever inspires her when she wakes up in the morning. Then she’s able to turn a creative idea into something that’s fun and silly and resonates with her audiences. And that’s why she works with tools like Photoshop, the ultimate image editing and design app, that lets her bring her creativity to life at the speed of her imagination whenever and whenever her inspiration strikes.

“Photoshop allows me to just have such creative freedom. It's such a powerful app and allows me to not only have precision and creative control, but it lets me bring ideas in my head to life. I love that it's something that connects all of us,” she says.

She’s able to take a photo or video and elevate it in a way that makes it even more beautiful and powerful than it was before. Photoshop can be used in so many ways during the creative process beyond photo editing – creating mood boards to kick off the creative process, graphic design for marketing and even for storyboards for videos. Photoshop has a diverse set of features that help with inspiration too. So what is her latest obsession with Photoshop?

“I'm obsessed with making collages – that's my new little love right now in life,” she says. When we spoke, she was getting ready for a spec shoot, and using Photoshop to put all of her ideas in one place, making sure colors worked well together and idealizing and expanding images. She was focused on building the flow of her video through inspirational imagery, so she could execute the perfect setups, fashion, theme and a plan to film her video. As a creator, she doesn’t just shoot and post, but loves to get creative with tools like Photoshop to bring a larger concept to life. “I love that I have an app that just allows me to expand further from just taking a photo and posting it on Instagram versus really bringing different ideas to life,” she adds.

Anna Sitar

Social media Dos and Don’ts

Anna is known for herrefreshing down-to-earth personality – you can feel it throughout her content. She’s really just herself and living her best life.

“Authenticity is an absolute DO,” she says. But that doesn’t mean you have to focus on just one aspect of yourself. “People often say to try to fit into a niche and I disagree. I don't think you should make content that's catered toward one idea. I think that YOU are the exciting idea, and everything that you have – all of these passions and things that you love – are a mosaic of what makes you creative,” she adds.

Another major DO? Finding the creative tools that most authentically support your content creation process. As an avid Photoshop user from a young age, Anna has continued to utilize the app for creative design across her channels to create content that is undeniably HER, without limits.

For all the chatter about posting multiple times a day to gain an audience, you might be surprised by Anna’s Don’ts. “You make your best content when you feel creative and when you feel like posting and making things that you're enjoying. If you're in a creative block, one, two, three days of rest are actually only going to benefit you in the long run,” she says. And along the lines of authenticity, “don't feel the need to make what everybody else is making to make something good,” she adds.

Adobe Photoshop tips and tricks

Anna has had a passion for photography since childhood. “I loved making little home movies out of our family vacations, and I grew up really loving photography,” she says. Photoshop is a tool that seamlessly fits into her life as a professional and in her day-to-day.

“I think when people think Photoshop, they think, ‘oh my gosh, I have to be doing these major changes to whatever I'm creating.’ But the truth is, I really do use it for everything from my Instagram post for my podcast page to giving a photo a different color scheme, or resizing or creating a little collage to inspire whatever I want to do next,” she says.

While talking about her community, Anna mentioned how much her Instagram community loves the black and white posters she creates withPhotoshop. “Even for the simplest tasks, the first app that I reach for is Photoshop. I really enjoy having an app that makes me feel like I can have my creativity at my fingertips. It has so many uses beyond just being a tool for elite creatives. It really is a great app for day-to-day life as well,” she adds.

Anna Sitar

Finding inspiration as a creator

As a creator, it can be easy to live your life online. Anna avoids that way of life and it makes her content even stronger for it. “When you're on a phone all the time and creating content, it's so easy to get lost in filming 90 percent of your life, and filming every time you go to a coffee shop, every time you have a hang out with a friend, every time you wear a good outfit that you're proud of. But my greatest inspiration comes from actually what I'm truly firsthand living and not documenting my life. And then the lessons that I learned and the things that I see and the value that brings to my life is only further elevating the content that I make,” she says.

Anna’s advice

If you’re someone who aspires to have a creative outlet, Anna has some advice for you.“Even if it's little baby steps that you take a photo every single day, or you make a video every single day, or you brainstorm every single day, I think action is the best way that you're going to learn,” she says.

Anna also recommends doing what she does, tinker with different tools and apps, this helps make her content shine. “You can learn so much by just testing out different features to edit photos, different ways to expand and add text and ways to make your creativity really come to life,” she says

“I think the best advice is to play and do what makes you happy."

Dylan O'Brien and Rachel McAdams are officially starring in a movie together, and I'm already looking to get tickets. While this pair wasn't on my fan cast bingo card, I'm certainly not mad about it! The two actors are joining Sam Raimi's upcoming horror thriller, Send Help, and while I'm excited about the cast, the plot alone sounds like it'll have me on the edge of my seat! I did some digging on what this movie is about, when we can expect it, and more, so you don't have to. See you at the theaters!

Here's everything you need to know about Dylan O'Brien & Rachel McAdams in Send Help.

What is 'Send Help' about?

John Nacion/Getty Images

Deadlinereports that this is a "survival horror thriller" (that's a mouthful of a genre!) about two coworkers who get stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. The pair has to overcome their differences in order to survive, but that may prove more challenging than not. Will they both make it out alive?

Whatever happens, I'll be seated and watching!

Who's in the 'Send Help' cast?

Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images for IMDb

Right now, the only cast members announced are Dylan O'Brien (Saturday Night), Rachel McAdams (Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret), and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians). We'll keep an eye out for any other exciting announcements, though!

When does 'Send Help' Come Out?

There's no official release date yet, but according to Deadline, this movie will get a theatrical release. Scary movies are even better in a big, dark, loud theater, so I am more than here for that! BRB while I try not to eat my popcorn too loud during the suspenseful parts!

2024 was the year movies reached their sweet spot again, but I didn't always have a taste for the usual rom-coms and action-packed films I'm known to watch. I wanted to see romantasy and gothic features that held hidden messages in their plots. Specifically, I yearned for a vampire tale that made me question life after devouring Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma — and I found it in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu.

Starring Bill Skarsgård, Lily Rose-Depp, Nicholas Hoult, William Dafoe, and Aaron-Tayor Johnson, it's one of the most terrifying and enchanting vampiric films I've seen in a long time. And yet, I have so many questions about it.

P.S. This DEFINITELY contains spoilers.

Scroll to see the 10 burning questions I have after watching Nosferatu!

Universal Pictures

1. What did all those lilacs mean?

One of the first things I noticed in Nosferatu are the obvious and subtle nods to lilac flowers. They're first seen in bouquet form when Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) happily brings them to his wife Ellen Hutter (Lily Rose-Depp). However, she's not happy about the gift, claiming they'll die. Her reaction and statement kept gnawing at me long after Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) smells a piece of hair in the locket she gave to Thomas.

Apparently, lilacs are a symbol of life — but also death — in literature. Walt Whitman best exemplified this through his poem When Lilacs Last In Door Yard Bloom'd, intrinsically linking the sweet smell of lilacs to the passing of Abraham Lincoln. So when Ellen freaked out about the bouquet being a "waste," was that just another reminder of the death and decay from her dream? Another reminder of her oath to Orlok? Is Ellen just a "picked" flower herself, bound to the vase that is her promise to Orlok?

Universal Pictures

2. Did Thomas Hutter sense something odd while in Herr Knock's office?

My favorite part about movies is watching characters' faces during conversations. Although it's not implied Thomas Hutter has otherworldly abilities, I wondered if felt something was wrong with Herr Knock's enthusiasm about securing property for Count Orlok.

Nicholas Hoult did a great job of showing subtle signs of confusion, apprehension and fear during the film so this stood out while he was in Herr Knock's office.

Universal Pictures

3. Could Ellen see Count Orlok waiting for Thomas before he left?

This seems like a silly question if you've watched Nosferatu, but the film didn't explicitly say whether Ellen could see him or not. Based on her fear about Thomas leaving to secure a stable financial future for them, I think it's possible Ellen had a deeper connection to Orlok than we originally thought.

Also, her dreams and nightmares seemed to get worse once Thomas left, indicating Orlok knew he could torment her even further since she was no longer under the watchful eye of her husband.

Universal Pictures

4. Did Thomas pass out after that Romanian vampire ritual?

As a viewer, it was clear the Romanians were staunchly against vampires, given how they were vehemently against his visit to Orlok immediately. Then, that night, Thomas happened upon some kind of ritual (or execution) of a vampire after exhuming it from a grave — only for Thomas to quickly wake up in his bed as if it was nothing more than a bad dream. Was it real, or just some kind of illusion? The mud on his boots say a lot to me, TBH.

But why would the Romanians not want him to believe it was real? Weren't they trying to prove to him how dangerous vampires (and Orlok) are? My guess is Orlok had something to do with the confusion.

Universal Pictures

4. What was Ellen gifted with?

I love the Insidious franchise, so I've become familiar with the concept of astral projecting in films. I didn't expect to see something similar in Nosferatu though. It became clear that Ellen is gifted, but I wonder how many abilities she has for a few reasons.

  1. Ellen explained to Professor Von Franz that she's always had the ability to 'know' things before they happen (i.e. her mother's death), indicating some type of psychic powers.
  2. Her prayers for comfort by any celestial being during her time of loneliness were answered by something demonic — Orlok (AKA Nosferatu).
  3. She always went into a trance at the same time of night — and even demonstrated an ability to speak on behalf of Orlok at one point.
Eventually, Professor Von Franz says he believes she would've been regarded as a high priestess if they lived during different times. In modern language, does that make her simply a witch, or something greater? Was she astral projecting when she was in the "trance state"? Where do Orlok's powers stop and hers begin?

Universal Pictures

5. Did Friedrich and Anna Harding's perspectives represent society's ability to ignore what can't be explained?

Let's have a moment of silence for Friedrich and Anna Harding. They were the unsuspecting friends of the Hutters who met their untimely (read: unfair) demise towards the end of Nosferatu. I didn't get the feeling they were bad people, but it seems like they were content living in a safe bubble where unexplained things were acts of God — or even nonexistent — in their eyes.

Does this mean they were supposed to represent society's ability to do the same whenever traumatic things occur? Whenever something challenges the safety of societal constructs that are have in place? And did their deaths portray the consequences of turning a blind eye to the world around you? I hate what happened to them, but Ellen really did try to warn everyone...

Universal Pictures

7. What did Professor Von Franz and Ellen's cats symbolize?

Cats were another element that stood out in Nosferatu. We first saw Ellen's cat Greta before Thomas Hutter received his grisly job assignment, and then later see a few living with Professor Von Franz. Though he was dubbed 'eccentric,' we later realize he's more aware of what's happening in Wisburg than 'regular' people as he's able to understand what's afflicting Ellen.

His immediate notice of Greta while evaluating Ellen made me wonder if the cats in Nosferatu were meant to symbolize familiars or protectors against evil. According to PBS, Medieval Europeans weren't too fond of cats, reporting that cats were often associated with the Devil and witches. The Guardianeven reported that while keeping domestic pets was on the rise in 19th century Europe (AKA the setting of Nosferatu), cats still weren't as liked — and often mainly seen as a means of hunting mice. They wrote, "As a result, cats weren’t as well-fed as other pets and developed a reputation for being sly and calculating."

With all that in mind, does the cat symbolize Ellen's gentle nature, seeking to comfort the less comforted? Does it symbolize her borderline witchy nature? And what do Professor Von Franz's many, many cats mean? (Seriously, someone please tell me what it means!)

Universal Pictures

8. Did a part of Ellen welcome Orlok's demonic presence?

This is one of the more controversial questions I have because of something Professor Von Franz told Ellen before the end of Nosferatu. He told her that we sometimes have to embrace the darkness within in order to stop external forces which leads me to wonder if that's what Ellen did.

I'm not implying that she liked or loved Orlok by any means because he's truly a demonic parasite. However, what if she decided to make peace with the shadow part of her soul in order to fulfill her destiny of saving others?

Universal Pictures

9. Did Ellen know she'd have to sacrifice herself?

Even though Ellen embraced the parts of herself she felt shamed by for a greater purpose, I've been thinking about the dark wedding dream she recounted to Thomas. She said she saw herself willingly marrying death and never felt happier despite how much death surrounded them.

Seeing that Orlok brought the plague to Wisburg that quickly started consuming the town, did Ellen know her fate would always lie with accepting whatever involved him?

Universal Pictures

10. Did Nosferatu shed light on the 1800s purity culture?

Lastly, did Nosferatu represent impurity and sexuality for women during the 1800s? Given that women are still held to a higher sexual standard, I can imagine the 1800s were a hot bed of making sure women were as pure as possible to be considered worthy brides and mothers.

Still, did Nosferatu imply that Anna was supposed to be a pillar of 'perfection' in this sense while Ellen's 'shame' and tormented soul called into question how pure she was? After all, she relayed how upset her father was to find her unclothed in the garden when she recounted how she "met" Orlok to begin with. Is this all really just a metaphor for the suffocating shame women face when considered "impure"?

Nosferatu is available to stream on Amazon Prime and Apple TV now!
