'The White Lotus' Characters Are Reading Some Insane Books — & Fans Think They're Major Easter Eggs

the white lotus season 3 book easter eggsthe white lotus season 3 book easter eggs

Many fans believe that Mike White, the mastermind behind the dark comedy-drama The White Lotus, is a genius. He created the gripping TV series, which follows privileged guests as they visit a new luxurious resort location each season and wind up caught in shocking (or even deadly) antics as their picture-perfect lives begin to unravel.

Season 3 is currently underway, but while seven episodes have been released thus far, it remains to be seen what characters will perish by the finale. Plenty of viewers have taken to social media to share their own theories, but some fans are calling attention to possible "Easter eggs," or hidden secret references, that have been right under our noses the whole time.

We're talking about the different books that numerous characters, from Victoria Ratliff to Chelsea and even Laurie, have been reading in the show. Perhaps the plots of each title are telling clues about their fates.

Scroll to see which books The White Lotusseason 3 characters are reading — and what that could mean!

parker posey in 'the white lotus' & 'the beautiful and damned' by f. scott fitzgerald

HBO & Amazon

Victoria Ratliff

We simply must begin with Victoria, played by Parker Posey, who couldn't have picked a more fitting book to read: The Beautiful and the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The 1922 novel tells the story of a privileged couple named Patch and Gloria who revel in their extravagant 1920s New York lifestyle. However, as their fortune begins to fade, they struggle to adapt, and Patch is led down a path of depression and alcoholism.

In Season 3 of The White Lotus, the Ratliffs start as a wealthy Durham, North Carolina, family, but then Timothy finds out that he's facing financial ruin and possible jail time, which begins to undo his character. The parallels are uncanny.

Amazon & HBO

Belinda

As one of the only two returning characters from Season 2, viewers have been on the edge of their seats watching Belinda grapple with the whole Greg/Gary situation. Still, you might not have noticed that her character was reading the self-help book Surrounded by Narcissists: Or, How to Stop Other People's Egos Ruining Your Life by Thomas Erikson.

You can probably gather from the title that it delves into what drives narcissists and how to deal with them. Given Season 3's themes of spirituality, as well as Belinda's moral struggle over what to do about Greg/Gary, some speculate that perhaps her reading choice is foreshadowing a final showdown where she takes control.

HBO & Amazon

Lochlan Ratliff

Compared to his arguably obnoxious brother, Saxon Ratliff, Lochlan Ratliff, played by Sam Nivola, is a more subdued character. Even so, he was actually seen reading Hunger by Knut Hamsun, which has been called one of the most unsettling novels ever written.

This book follows a young man who wanders the world and is subjected to the silent judgment of others. Still, he continues exposing himself to the outside world, and his own thoughts become a form of self-inflicted torment.

The link between Lochlan and Hunger seems pretty straightforward. He and the protagonist are both searching for their identity, and since Lochlan is part of such a chaotic and critical family, it's understandable why he's struggling.

Amazon & HBO

Laurie

Laurie, played by Carrie Coon, also picked up an extremely appropriate title: Modern Lovers by Emma Straub. It mirrors Laurie's getaway with Jaclyn and Kate, following three lifelong friends as they navigate a summer of change.

In the book, the children of friends Elizabeth, Andrew, and Zoe come of age and entangle themselves in new relationships, which causes long-buried secrets and unresolved tensions to surface.

If Modern Lovers is any indication of what's to come in The White Lotus, it's safe to say that Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate's bond won't be repaired by the season's end.

HBO & Amazon

Chelsea

Chelsea, played by Aimee Lou Wood, has actually been caught reading two different books this season, including Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living by Pema Chodron and The Essential Rumi by Jalal Al-Din Rumi.

Both books revolve around themes of spirituality, self-reflection, and inner peace. The former offers self-help advice based on traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings, while the latter is a collection of spiritual short stories.

The real question is, who is Chelsea seeking wisdom for? Is she on her own self-discovery journey, or is she trying to help her boyfriend, Rick? Only time will tell.

Amazon & HBO

Jaclyn Lemon

Last but not least, Jaclyn, portrayed by Michelle Monaghan, was spotted reading My Name Is Barbra by Barbra Streisand. In her memoir, Barbra reflects on the defining moments of her career and personal life.

This makes sense because Jaclyn is also an actress who's balancing a high-profile marriage to a fellow actor and confronting the realities of aging in the public eye. Still, it's unclear what My Name Is Barbra is hinting about Jaclyn's fate on The White Lotus, if anything.

Fans of Yellowstoneand its gripping prequels, 1883 and 1923, know the Dutton family saga isn't just a show: it's a whole epic.

With storylines that stretch across centuries and span generations, the Yellowstone universe has become a full-blown dynasty that's packed with unforgettable characters and their backstories, thanks to Taylor Sheridan.

So, if you're feeling a little lost on who's who and how they're all connected, you are definitely not alone. We've laid it all out for you in one comprehensive guide to the Dutton family tree. Fair warning: there are a lot of spoilers!

Scroll to find out everything you need to know about the Dutton family tree!

Sarah Coulter/Paramount+

1883

It makes sense to start with 1883, as the Dutton family origin story began when James Dutton, played by Tim McGraw, set out with his family to find a better life in the West following the Civil War. He became the first Dutton to settle in Montana, a decision that came after he lost his daughter, Elsa.

Sarah Coulter/Paramount+

James is married to Margaret, portrayed by Faith Hill, who is a strong-willed woman and former Civil War nurse. The two of them traveled out west with their three children, Elsa, John, and Spencer.

Sarah Coulter/Paramount+

Elsa was the couple's eldest daughter and also served as the narrator in 1883. Prior to her death, her first love was a cowboy named Ennis, but he was killed in a gunfight. Then, not long afterward, she fell in love again with a Comanche warrior named Sam, but while they dreamed of building a life together, Elsa ultimately died. Again, it was her death that determined the family's decision to settle in Montana.

Sarah Coulter/Paramount+

Meanwhile, John Dutton Sr., the eldest son of James and Margaret, was only a young boy in 1883. Fans later get to meet him as a grown man in 1923. The couple's youngest son, Spencer, also doesn't appear in 1883 but goes on to play a key role in the next generation's story.

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

Traveling west alongside the Duttons is James' widowed sister, Claire nee Dutton, who is weighed down by unimaginable grief. She lost six of her children, as well as her husband, Henry, before the journey even began.

So, Claire brought her final child with her, Mary Abel, but tragedy struck her yet again when Mary was killed during their journey out west. The loss hits Claire so hard that she decides to take her own life at her daughter's grave.

James Minchin III/Paramount+

1923

By the time 1923 begins, James and Margaret have both passed and their sons, John Sr. and Spencer, are raised by James' brother, Jacob Dutton, who takes over the Dutton Ranch and assumes the role of family patriarch. He's also married to Cara Dutton, who's originally from Ireland.

James Minchin III/Paramount+

At the same time, John Dutton Sr. has grown into a capable rancher and is married to Emma Dutton.

James Minchin III/Paramount+

Together, they have a son named Jack, who represents the next generation of Duttons and is engaged to Elizabeth Strafford.

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

The storyline of Spencer Dutton, who fans didn't get to meet in 1883, starts in 1923. Again, he was the youngest child of James and Margaret, and as an adult, he served in World War I, worked in Africa, and eventually fell in love with his wife, Alexandra.

Now, it's presumed that John Dutton II was the son of Spencer and Alexandra, but this hasn't been confirmed. What we do know is that he eventually fathers John Dutton III, the present-day patriarch of the Yellowstone Ranch.

Paramount

Yellowstone

In Yellowstone, John Dutton III is the strong force behind the modern Dutton empire. As both a rancher and Montana's governor, he stands at a crossroads between tradition and change.

John was married to Evelyn Dutton, but she ultimately died following a horseback riding incident. This left John to raise their four children, Lee, Beth, Kayce, and Jamie, on his own.

Paramount

Their eldest son, Lee, was poised to inherit the ranch but was killed in the show's first season.

Paramount

Beth, their only daughter, is a complex and fiercely loyal woman who's married to Rip Wheeler, John's right-hand man.

Rip was actually taken in by John as a teen. Together, he and Beth then took in Carter, a troubled foster teen whom they're raising on the ranch.

Paramount

As for Jamie Dutton, he eventually learns he was adopted despite being raised as John's son. He also has his own son, Jamie Jr., with his ex, Christina.

Paramount

Finally, Kayce, the third Dutton son, doesn't have the closest bond with his father. He's married to Monica Long Dutton, a Native American woman from the Brocken Rock Reservation, and they have a son named Tate.

The pair had a second son, John Dutton IV, too. Sadly, he died shortly after he was born following a car accident on the way to the hospital.

Starbucks fans, the Starbucks summer menu for 2025 is coming way sooner than you think! Launching next month, the coffee chain gave us a cheeky lil’ sneak peek at their next seasonal lineup, and it looks stacked.

Scroll on to see everything coming to the Starbucks summer menu in May!

Meet The Starbucks Summer Menu For 2025!

Starbucks

Here's the full lineup for this year's Starbucks summer menu:

  • NEW! Iced Horchata Oatmilk Shaken Espresso
  • Summer-Berry Refreshers (Summer-Berry Lemonade Refresher and Summer Skies Drink to return)
  • NEW! Strawberries & Cream Cake Pop
Below, we dive into each item so you can know what to expect once these menu items drop in May! We don't have an official launch date yet, but will keep you updated here the moment we know more details.

Starbucks

NEW! Iced Horchata Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

Yummm. Inspired by horchata, we anticipate this new shaken espresso flavor from Starbucks to have notes of cinnamon and coconut, both of which pair really well for a light and refreshing sip – much needed in the summer! Per some Starbucks employees on Reddit, it looks like it'll be crafted using an all-new horchata syrup, too. 👀

Starbucks

Summer-Berry Refreshers

That's right: Starbucks' boba drinks are officially coming back! Launching next month, the chain's blue-tinted Summer-Berry Refreshers come with a serving of raspberry-flavored popping boba to elicit summertime fun. The boba pearls were very divisive among baristas and customers when they hit menus in 2024.

Last year, this lineup of Refreshers came in three variations: the Summer-Berry Refresher, the Summer-Berry Lemonade Refresher, and the Summer Skies Drink (mixed with coconut milk). The last two will definitely be returning to the summer menu for 2025! After a taste test from last year's launch, the Summer Skies ended up being our favorite.

Starbucks

NEW! Strawberries & Cream Cake Pop

Lastly, Starbucks is introducing a brand-new cake pop flavor for summertime: Strawberries & Cream! Some Starbucks employees on Reddit noted that it'll include a strawberry cake base with buttercream, which sounds so yummy. This new bite will join the existing cake pop trio of Birthday Cake (pictured above), Chocolate, and Cookies & Cream.

Buckle your seatbelts, because I may have some controversial takes on this one. The Merriam-Webster definition of science fiction is as follows: "fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component." And Wikipedia also calls out that sci-fi "explores imaginative and futuristic concepts, often focusing on advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, and extraterrestrial life, as well as the potential impact of these ideas on society.” So from classic shows to sci-fi vibey apocalypses, these are the best sci-fi shows to stream right now. Let's get into it!

Below are 12 of the best sci-fi shows on streaming!

1. Severance

Apple TV+

This series speaks for itself; Severance has become a cultural phenomenon, taking the world by storm, becoming Apple TV's most popular show — yes, even surpassing Ted Lasso! Employees at Lumon Industries undergo a procedure that splits their consciousness, creating a severed "innie" at work and an "outie" outside. Utilizing sci-fi, the series does a deep dive into the themes of work-life balance, identity, and corporate control.

Your outie can enjoy Severance on Apple TV+.

2. Silo

Apple TV+

Silo deserves justice, and I’m here to serve it — the show has always been severely and undeservedly undermarketed. A mesmerizing post-apocalyptic show, Silo is based on the best-selling book series by Hugh Howey, set in a ruined and toxic future where thousands of people live in a giant silo deep underground. Of course, that’s not all, but I’m not here to spoil it for you! Silo offers mind-bending twists you’ll want to experience first-hand.

Silo is available on Apple TV+.

3. Stranger Things

Tina Rowden/Netflix

This worldwide phenomenon is so popular that I’m wondering if it even requires an introduction? Ok, ok, for the (two) people who do need the introduction, without further ado, Stranger Things. In a small, 1980s Indiana town, a group of young friends experience and witness gravity-defying supernatural forces and terrifying government exploits. In the search for answers, they unravel more than they bargained for. While I can’t confirm if it’s the most popular sci-fi series, Stranger Things has certainly altered pop culture and reinvented what the genre could be, popularizing science fiction to new audiences, and influencing the TV landscape.

You can find Stranger Things is on Netflix, with a fifth and final season quickly approaching in October. Rumors have it the final season will be split into two parts.

4. The 100

The CW

Sci-fans can all agree that The 100 is a must watch. It’s set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed all of civilization. Those that survived now live on the 12 international space stations in orbit at the time. The series stars with the survivors in space sending 100 of their juvenile prisoners back to Earth to test its habitability, as resources are running scarce on the space stations. It’s a wildly addictive show, to say the least. So, what are you waiting for?

The 100 is now streaming on Netflix.

5. Fallout

JoJo Whilden/Prime Video

What can I say, video game adaptations reign supreme in the sci-fi & post-apocalyptic space, wink, wink! Fallout takes place in a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles — the result of a nuclear onslaught. As a girl who’s played the game, the creator, Jonah Nolan, nailed it. It’s player’s choice, so the show’s story and plot line is his own iteration, but he brought in all of the elements players know and love from the game — we’re talking all the nitty, gritty details too, from the uniforms, the settings, creatures you encounter, and more.

Fallout is streaming on Prime Video, and better yet, has been renewed for a second season.

6. Lost

ABC

Lost walked so (almost) all of the shows on this list could run. The series premiered in 2004 and revitalized the genre at a time where sitcoms dominated the cable space. With a pilot often hailed as one of the best in television history, the series quickly gained traction and soared to the top in its heyday. Because, who doesn’t love a little deserted island scenario? I can tell you who doesn’t, and it’s not the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, but again — no spoilers!

You can watch Lost on Netflix.

7. Black Mirror

Jonathan Prime / Netflix

If you’re not up to committing to an entirely new TV show, I get it, and that’s why I give you Black Mirror. Black Mirror consists of stand-alone episodes that explore techno-paranoia, and is actually a modern-day reworking of The Twilight Zone. Black Mirror’s hauntingly good catalogue of episodes will quite literally never leave you disappointed. What’s more, especially in their recent seasons, you get to see actors you normally wouldn’t see tackling this genre — Miley Cyrus, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jon Hamm, Michaela Coel, Cristin Milioti — the list could go on.

Black Mirror is exclusively on Netflix.

8. Foundation

Apple TV+

Another majorly underrated Apple TV+ sci-fi series—also ironically based on award-winning novels—is Foundation. The show follows a band of exiles on a journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the collapse of the Galactic Empire.

Foundation is streaming on Apple TV+.

9. 3 Body Problem

Ed Miller/Netflix

This is an interesting one — 3 Body Problem is based on a novel many thought would be too conceptually complicated to adapt for the screen, but Netflix did it, and did it well. Known for its visually stunning visuals and the drama that ensues throughout the 45 minute to an hour long episodes, 3 Body Problem is every sci-fi lover's dream. I don’t want to botch its intricate story, so I’ll reiterate its Netflix synopsis: The story begins in 1960s China when a young woman makes a fateful decision that reverberates across space and time into the present day.

You can find 3 Body Problem on Netflix.

10. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Marni Grossman/Paramount+

Where are the Trekkies out there? If you’re a Star Trek fan and haven’t seen Star Trek: Strange New Worlds—what are you doing?! This iteration serves as a prequel to the 1966 series, following Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, and Number One as they explore new worlds aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. For a franchise that’s been around for 59 years and has gone through countless iterations, it’s a feat in and of itself that this series has been so critically acclaimed by the cult following these characters and their stories have amassed over decades.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is streaming on Paramount+.

11. The Boys

Jan Thijs/Prime Video

The Boys is centered around superheroes, yes—but because their powers come from a chemical compound called Compound V, the series leans heavily into sci-fi. It’s definitely an outlier on this list, with its satirical edge that offers sharp commentary on corporate greed and corruption through the lens of superhero culture. Still, it's an important contender on the list, modernizing and subverting one of today’s most popular tropes: the superhero.

The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.

12. Lost in Space

Diyah Pera/Netflix

If you’re already missing Parker Posey after the now-concluded third season of White Lotus, you can catch more of her in the modern-day reboot of the 1965 classic Lost in Space. While the plot follows the same general premise as the ’60s version, it’s been of course ~revamped~. Set 30 years in the future, the series centers on the Robinson family, who’ve been chosen to start a new life in a distant space colony. But when their ship is abruptly thrown off course, they crash-land on a dangerous alien planet and are forced to fight against all odds to survive – and escape. They’re not alone, though. Among the stranded are the unsettlingly charismatic Dr. Smith (Parker Posey!) and the inadvertently charming Don West.

Lost in Space is on Netflix.

Jesse Eisenberg's been in the director's chair with movies like When You Finish Saving the World and A Real Pain under his belt, but he's just getting started. Next up is an A24 musical comedy that already has a promising cast. Maybe it's a sign of the times, but I think pop culture could use more poignant stories mixed with a dash of humor!

Keep scrolling to learn everything about Jesse Eisenberg's new musical movie.

Who's in the cast for Jesse Eisenberg's musical comedy?

Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

Bernadette Peters

Variety reports Jesse Eisenberg's musical comedy has an impressive cast so far. Here's the familiar faces we'll see:

  • Julianne Moore
  • Paul Giamatti
  • Jesse Eisenberg
  • Bonnie Mulligan
  • Colton Ryan
  • Lilli Cooper
  • Maulik Pancholy
  • Halle Bailey
  • Havana Rose Liu
  • Bernadette Peters

What is the musical comedy about?

Variety also revealed Julianne Moore's character will be a "shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a community theater musical production, going to extremes as she loses herself in the role."

I'm sensing Only Murders in the Building season 4 vibes with the exception of murder. Hopefully death isn't a major plot in the storyline?

Has filming started for it?

Variety reports the musical comedy began filming this month!

What kind of music can we expect to hear?

Amy Sussman/Getty Image,

While the sound for Jesse Eisenberg's musical comedy is still a secret, we can expect to hear the filmmaker's "original music and lyrics" throughout it (via Variety). Music supervisor Steven Gizicki (La La Land), executive music producer Bill Sherman (In the Heights), and cinematographer Drew Daniels (Oscar-winning Anora) are also a part of the movie.

When will Jesse Eisenberg's musical comedy premiere in theaters?

For now that news is TBD, but we'll let you know as soon we find out! Wouldn't it be nice if it premieres closer to fall?
