These Are Our B+C Book Club’s Best Books of 2016 (Part 1)

We’ve had a great year of reading here at the Brit+Co Book Club, and 2016 has been a great year for books (if nothing else, literature tends to flourish in an increasingly dystopian world). As the year winds to a close, let’s count down with some of our favorite volumes from the past twelve months, everything from the nerviest non-fiction to the most scintillating stories. If you’re looking for some vacation reading or some last-minute holiday gifts, here’s a good place to start.

1. January: My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout ($18): Strout, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Olive Kitteridge and The Burgess Boys, delivered a novel of haunting simplicity in January. It’s on all sorts of best-book and bestseller lists, and was long listed for the Man Booker prize. There’s a reason why. It’s full of sentiments without being sentimental; it’s far-reaching but sparing, it’s been called both “profound” and “down to earth.” At its heart, it’s the story of a mother-daughter relationship that’s both familiar and captivating. As Lucy endures a slow recovery from what should have been a quick operation, her mother comes to see and potentially care for her. The twist is that the two haven’t spoken in years, and the reunion may not be wanted. It’s needed, though, as Lucy has a life of yearning that has never been fully satisfied, even through her own writing career, marriage and beloved children. “To begin with, it was a simple story,” writes Lucy, and it seems like it might be enough at first to chat about hometown gossip with her mother, but depth charges await.

2. February: In Other Words by Jhumpa Lahiri ($16):The chill of February invites us to focus on the heat of love, and one of February’s most intriguing releases was Jhumpa Lahiri’s love song to language, In Other Words. Known for her fiction (especially the Pulitzer Prize-winning Interpreter of Maladies), Lahiri masters both non-fiction and the Italian language, determinedly learning how to communicate in a new milieu in the years after her first trip to Italy with her sister. Lahiri wrote the whole book in Italian, and readers can shore up their own language skills by reading the dual-language format, with Ann Goldstein’s facing translations. Even Mindy Kaling was over the moon for Lahiri’s latest, calling it a “literary mic drop.”

3. March: All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation by Rebecca Traister ($17): Changing times demand a changing nation, and even a potential revolution. Rebecca Traister’s captivating journalistic achievement tells the tale of a singular development; started just after America learned the “Single Ladies” dance and the year the country first boasted more single than married women, her research and interviews put a face to an independent generation. Traister dispenses with the notion of marriage being a “happily ever after,” with singledom leading to the beginning of a fascinating story, as it has historically led to huge changes in the development of human rights. The book marries (sorry) academic with moving personal statements, and delivers a compelling argument to why you might want to wait to put a ring on it, or at least support others who make that decision.

4. April: Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter($27):Speaking of revolutions, this was Hamilton’s year on Broadway and in the world, as official “genius” Lin-Manuel Miranda made us all interested in a “Founding Father without a father” whose story could have come out of any rap opus. The “Hamiltome,” as its fans call it, takes readers from mixtape to MacArthur Genius Grant, from its not-so-humble beginnings (its first song debuted at the White House, with Obama making an appearance in the book) to its Tony landslide victory. It features the incredibly detailed libretto of the show, as well as tons of stories and pictures. It’s for fans and fans-to-be, which should be everyone, of a show in which the women are brilliantly witty and compassionate, and where Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson are hip hop hotties.

5. May: Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman by Lindy West ($16):May was full of amazing and socially relevant books (like the story of gay marriage’s victory at the Supreme Court, Love Wins, and Tig Notaro’s blistering I’m Just a Person), but we found that maybe the best way to get listened to above all the options is to be Shrill. Lindy West’s collection of personal essays was on point, funny, sad and pointed. It called out misogyny and fatphobia, and managed to do both while leaving a permanent grin on your face. Caitlin Moran calls it “literally the new Bible,” and we’re inclined to agree; it was time for someone to call out the haters, and to remind us that being shrill is just another word for being confident and speaking your mind. With chapters like “It’s About Free Speech, It’s Not About Hating Women,” West’s mind can speak to us as loudly as it wants.

6. June: Homegoing: A Novel by Yaa Gyasi ($17): An epic year deserves an epic novel. Homegoing is a story of seven generations, an epic journey of two half-sisters who live in Ghana and America in the 18th century. Their worlds might as well be divergent universes, as Effia, who winds up in Ghana married to a rich Englishman, lives a life of relative privilege, while Esi’s American world is little but heartbreak and slavery, a terrible fate for a woman who is much more than that. The racism and classism inherent in both sisters’ situations wind up having explosive consequences down the line, as the British oppression in Ghana leads to an interminable war, and the brutality of American slavery shapes a nation’s consciousness and still cries out for redress. Take it from Ta-Nehisi Coates, who raved, “I think I needed to read a book like this to remember what is possible.”

We just posted our July-December picks, so go check it out here. And, as always, read on!

Women like Kristin Cavallariare giving a middle finger to outdated rules like who's allowed to have an age gap relationship or not, and it's refreshing to see. As much as we remember her for her time on The Hills, she's branched out as an author, entrepreneur, and host of the podcast Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari. Speaking of her podcast, Kristin Cavallari didn't hold back in her when she dished about her ex-boyfriend Mark Estes.

At first listen, her giddy tone is evident and immediately captivated listeners for the 45 minutes she gushed about the key details that led her to a new relationship. Since then, the two had quite a public relationship even if was short-lived!

How did Kristin Cavallari meet her ex-boyfriend Mark Estes?

Mike Coppola/Getty Images

We're truly living in a digital age because TikTok is the reason Kristin Cavallari was introduced to her ex-boyfriend Mark Estes. She told her best friend Justin Anderson that she was scrolling down her timeline when she came across what she called a "boy group" called The Montana Boyz and they both agreed one of them specifically is her type. She said, "He's gorgeous. Like, everything about him is perfect. But, he's also outdoorsy and manly."

Three weeks later, she got a DM from The Montana Boyz that said "I love you" and she immediately let them know she wanted to have them on her podcast. Although the podcast didn't happen, Kristin Cavallari appeared in one of their TikTok videos. Once Kristin Cavallari learned from her assistant that they were planning to move to Nashville, she arranged for a line dancing meet-up with The Montana Boyz and her staff. After they met, Kristin decided to call the guy who would become her ex-boyfriend "Montana." (Cavallari used Montana as a stand in for her boyfriend's real name during the podcast recording as she never names anyone explicitly on her show.)

Shortly after that, Kristin Cavallari hard launched her new relationship with ex-boyfriend Mark Estes on Instagram in February, and the rest is history!

How did she feel about their age gap?

Kristin Cavallari didn't know how young The Montana Boyz were, but she wasn't interested in pursuing a relationship with Mark Estes at first. She did admit she had a brief issue with their age gap, but decided that Mark being 24 while she's 37 didn’t really bother her. Justin pointed out that she actually used to say she wouldn't date guys who were only 30 because she thought they were too young. However, she was more interested in who Mark was as a person and notes that life experiences and how you were raised is more indicative of one's maturity level than age alone.

Did Kristin Cavallari's kids like Mark Estes?

Kristin Cavallari said her boys were so excited to meet Mark for the first time and she felt like they really wanted her to be happy. "I've been really good about separating my dating life from their [life]," she said. Her oldest son especially approved of Mark and it was shocking to Kristin because he's usually the toughest judge of whoever she's dating.

How did her career prepare her for public opinions about their relationship?

Terry Wyatt/Getty Images

Kristin Cavallari didn’t care what anyone thought about her ex-boyfriend. She's lived life in the public eye and is comfortable enough with herself to make decisions that make her happy. Kristin said, "...when this news came out, it's the first time in my entire life I 100% haven't given a sh-t what anyone thinks... My own mother is noticing a difference in me."

Did she mention anything about her divorce from Jay Cutler?

Timothy Hiatt/Getty Images

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler were married for seven years before announcing their divorce in 2020. She didn't go into detail about it during the podcast episode, but she did talk about the magnitude of her former relationship with her ex-boyfriend. "It's the first time I've gone public since my divorce," she said.

How did Mark Estes adjust to being in the public eye with Kristin Cavallari?

Montana Boyz's Mark Estes Says He's a "TRUE ROMANTIC" With Girlfriend Kristin Cavallari | E! News

Mark Estes may be in the spotlight because he dated Kristin Cavallari, but that didn’t mean he was enthusiastic about it. E! News caught up with him at the CMT Awards and he said, "It comes with the territory, I guess...It is what it is." One thing his friend Kade Wilcox — another one of The Montana Boyz — mentioned is that Mark was quite the romanticist when it came to Kristin Cavallari. He told the outlet, "He's pretty good at date nights."

How did Kristin Cavallari feel about dating a younger man?

Uncommon James

Kristin Cavallari and Mark Estes may have been in bliss for a short while, but the former knows having an age gap in a relationship isn't always applauded by others. " I understand what it looks like from the outside world of, like, yeah, I’m dating a 24-year-old, but no one in my life has been like, ‘This is weird.’ Everyone’s like, ’I get it. It makes sense,'" she said (via Bustle).

She also said, "...Emotionally, he’s able to step up to the plate, and he’s shown up for me more than anyone else I’ve ever dated," (via Bustle). And according to her, Mark's all in when it comes to her kids and they love him for it. "He loves my kids. He actually took my kids to school, and it's just—he fits in very well. And I'm really thankful for that," (via E! News).

It's not easy balancing being an attentive mom who has a full-fledged career and relationship, but Kristin seemed grateful for the way Mark stepped up to the plate. She said he made things feel "so easy" which is something all moms crave!

Hard Feelings The Debut Eau De Parfum From Uncommon James

Since talking about everything from her time on Laguna Beach to her relationship, Kristin Cavallari and Mark Estes appeared together in an ad campaign for her brand's new fragrance, Hard Feelings. It's described as an "alluring" scent that's meant to invigorate one's senses. With notes like pink pepper, hibiscus, and sandalwood, we don't doubt it's sensuality!

What's the steamy thing  Kristin revealed about her former relationship?

Uncommon James

During the "Truth or Drink with Mark Estes" episode on Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, Kristin and Mark delved into steamy secrets about their relationship. The latter even dropped a bombshell when he admitted he enjoyed being intimate with Kristin. He said, "Yeah, you’re the best sex I've ever had for sure," which shocked her.

Though she liked his confession, she said she "didn't know that" before letting him know she felt the same. But, she attributed their hot sex to things like being "more present physically during sex" and being "wildly attracted" to Mark.

But, their relationship isn't all about their amazing romps in bed. Mark was “obviously so in love" with Kristin so that added to the spiciness factor!

Why did Kristin Cavallari And Mark Estes break up?

Mindy Small/Getty Images

Sadly, all of the passion Kristin Cavallari and Mark Estes had fizzled out because they broke up after 7 months of being in a relationship (via Us Weekly). She initially told Alex Cooper, host of the Call Her Daddy podcast, the breakup was “fresh,” (via PEOPLE ).

Opening up on her Let's Be Honest podcast, Kristin talked about why she and Mark broke up. "It's hard because I broke up with Mark because I just know long-term it's not right, and it's not because of love lost or something bad happened," she said. Insisting their relationship didn't end on a sour note, she swore "he's been the best boyfriend."

But, the issue seems to boil down to their age gap. She'd prefer for him not to jump into a serious long-term relationship in his mid-twenties because she thinks they're "formative years" and "when you find yourself." She also said she doesn't "regret anything" because they had a "good, happy relationship."

We're sad to see this couple go their separate ways, but it's for the best!

This year's celebrity breakups aren't slowing down anytime soon, and unfortunately, that includes Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Rumors about the couple's split began when TMZ reported that they were "heading" for divorce, and even though Joe posted a picture to his Instagram with his wedding band in full view on September 4, the couple later announced they're getting divorced.

"I can't imagine seeing this many rumors about my personal life," another said. "They keep so private and this is why."

From their red carpet debut to their engagement, the couple has chosen exactly what they wanted to announce — and what they want to keep private. "I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship," Sophie told The Sunday Times.

"I'm very protective of the life we've built...You never want to market yourself as a celebrity couple. It's not that cool," she tellsElle UK. "And my daughter never asked for any of this. I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry, and to be photographed every day and have the comments. It's not something I want her to deal with unless she says, 'This is what I want to do.' We're quite strict about that."

"When we started dating, I realized that I didn't have a ton of stuff that was just for me," Joe told MR PORTER. "And in the end, it makes me a better person to have something for myself."

However, the singer's privacy is more about about his loved ones than himself. “You’re protecting your family, your friends and those around you,” Joe told Entertainment Tonight. “You wanna be really protective over how much you wanna share in your personal life, and I feel like as artists, we get the opportunity to express our heart through our music, and so that’s where I’m personal and honest as I can be.”

A Timeline Of Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner's Relationship

Joe Jonas Slid Into Sophie Turner's DMs In 2016

"We had a lot of mutual friends, and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time," Sophie told Harper's Bazaar in 2019. "We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue."

This is actually super similar to how Nick Jonas made the first move on his wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas! After finally meeting IRL and realizing they liked each other, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner became exclusive in private before deciding to take their relationship public.

Sophie posted a photo of Joe smoking a cigar on a boat to Instagram on January 1, 2017, with "Miami daze" as the caption.

"You do feel like you’re living in a fishbowl," she told Marie Claire UK about celebrity life later that summer. "It’s frustrating [that] it’s the most mundane things that make the news – how boring! There are really no other headlines?"

They Get Engaged In The Fall Of 2017

By the time fall 2017 rolled around, the couple was madly in love and announced that they were engaged with matching Instagram posts (his reads "She said yes," and hers reads, "I said yes.")

"I think once you’ve found the right person, you just know," she told Rolling Stonein 2019.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner got married in Las Vegas in May 2019. "We had to get legally married in the states, so we thought it'd be really fun to get all of our friends, invite them out, and do an impromptu wedding," Joe told GQ. "It kind of blew up in our faces because my parents called me the next morning and they were like, 'Did you just get married?' And I realized I told everybody, but I forgot to tell my parents."

However, it seems like Mr. and Mrs. Jonas were able to see the second round of nuptials, a more-private ceremony at the end of June 2019. The official ceremony took place at Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians, France. Kevin and Nick Jonas were Joe's groomsmen, while Sophie's Game of Thrones costar (and BFF) Maisie Williams was her maid of honor.

Sophie Turner Gives Birth To Baby Willa In 2020

The internet was over the moon when Sophie was seen with a baby bump, and TMZ reported that the couple gave birth on July 22, 2020, before later revealing the baby's name is Willa.

"[They] are over the moon," a source told Entertainment Tonight at the end of July 2020. "The couple is already obsessed and can't stop gloating about their new addition. The couple is taking time to enjoy this special moment and have only shared the news and updates with family and friends."

It's been a busy few years for both Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. The Jonas Brothers released Happiness Begins in 2019, followed by this year's The Album, while Sophie starred in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Staircase, and Do Revenge. But unknown to the rest of the world, they were also getting ready for baby number two!

Sophie showed up to the May 2022 Met Gala cradling a baby bump, and then made her official pregnancy announcement in an Elle UK feature the next day. "The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength," she says in the interview. "We're so excited to be expanding the family. It's the best blessing ever."

In July 2022, People confirmed that the couple had welcomed their second daughter!

Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner Announce They're Getting Divorced

TODAY received an exclusive petition saying Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner, and that their marriage is "irretrievably broken." He also states that the divorce is in the best interest of their daughters, and that the couple will "have shared parental responsibility" moving forward.

On September 6, the couple shared joint statements to their Instagram accounts. "After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," the statements read. "There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner came to a new (temporary) agreement on where their kids would live after Sophie sued Joe for "wrongful retention" of their children in New York. According to new documentation, the two children will stay in New York, which both Joe and Sophie have consented to.

"After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK," Joe and Sophie said in a statement the week of October 11. Since the agreement legally lasts until January 7, the former couple will "jointly submit a status report letter" before December 23, according to the agreement.

On January 11, a new UK custody plan for Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner was approved, leading Sophie to drop last fall's wrongful retention claims on January 17 "with prejudice, and without attorneys’ fees, expenses, costs and/or disbursements awarded to either party."

Sophie Turner Gets Real About Motherhood Following Divorce From Joe Jonas

Sophie Turner/Instagram

Sophie Turner opened up about her role as the titular character in Joan, a new TV series, and shared how art is imitating life. "If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it," she said (via The Sunday Times). Though she mentioned it's not easy being a "single mother," some people took what she said out of context.

She wasn't talking about herself, but her character Joan's efforts to do the unseemly to have her child back in her life. Still, she clarified her comments via her Instagram stories so there's no confusion about her words. IMO, I don't think she needed to do that because being a mother is hard. Caring for children isn't just about candid Paparazzi or social media posts. When you're doing it by yourself or with a support village, it takes time, effort, consistency, repetition, and so much more!

Luckily she and Joe Jonas are able to have a situation where they're co-parenting so they can alternate between working and caring for them.

We're wishing Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner the best.
