This Is the Best Dating App to Avoid Scammers and Bots

We have a love/hate relationship with dating apps. Dating is tricky enough IRL, and in some ways, trying to use an app to find “the one” makes the whole process even harder. For example, you might never know if that hot, funny guy who DMed back-and-forth with you for hours and then just ghosted was offended by the terrible pun in your last message, or if “his” algorithm played itself out.

Apps with a women-friendly mission tend to be better at blocking trolls and bots, and one of our favorites is now taking that a step even further. Bumble, the app where ladies are required to send the first message (so you don’t have to deal with dudes who just mass-send inappropriate pics), just added a new feature that requires users to upload a selfie to verify their account.

The feature is rolling out first to people who’ve already been flagged for poor profile conduct, and later, it will become a standard feature. When you’re setting up a profile, the app will send you a photo of someone doing a specific gesture (like flashing a peace sign next to their face) and prompt you to imitate it. Then a moderator will compare it to the rest of the pics you’ve uploaded to your profile and determine if you can be verified. And if someone tries to create a fake account? Bumble’s gonna bump ’em before their catfishing butt can get anywhere near you.

Nothing’s 100 percent fool-proof, but this update should go a long way to cut down on the number of bots trying to slide into your DMs and scam you. But if you’re still not sure if someone you’re matching with is legit, here are a few signs to consider:

1. You’re not on Bumble, Huggle, Blume or Coy. Of course, not everyone on dating apps is a fraud, but these apps are the ones who’ve gone the extra step to add some sort of photo or video verification.

2. His photo issuspiciously well-lit. Is he standing in front of a solid white background, just casually laughing? Sounds like a stock photo to us. Do a reverse image search on Google Images and see what turns up.

3. Their messages sound canned or just flat-out make no sense. Some people aren’t great texters and just don’t come off as naturally in writing as they would speaking. But if you get a bunch of random words strung together and they don’t immediately follow it up with “Ugh autocorrect FML,” you should probably be suspicious.

4. They send you a link to their next gig. If your clever opening line is immediately met with a “Haha, check out my website,” or “I’m playing this show next month, you should come,” they’re probably more interested in selling tickets to their lame coffeehouse acoustic set than actually meeting you.

5. Their profile info is practically blank. If someone’s setting up a bunch of bots, they’re not going to spend a lot of time crafting the perfect bio for each one. Even if it is a real person, best-case scenario: They’re too boring for you to bother anyway.

You’re swapping stories about favorite recipes and customs, and you’re comfortable enough to share the nitty-gritty details about icky family dramas that can make the season awkward. If these conversations are coming up naturally and you want to share your holiday with your S.O. IRL, licensed marriage and family therapist Katie Ziskind says it might be time to extend the invite.

2. Your S.O. Has Already Met Some Of Your Family

Therapist Irene Schreiner recommends that you consider bringing your partner to Thanksgiving if they’ve already met some of your loved ones. “If they haven’t met anyone in your family yet,” on the other hand, “it can feel too overwhelming to have them meet everyone at once during the craziness of the holiday,” she says. Know your S.O.’s boundaries so you can push or protect them accordingly.

3. Your Family Wants To Meet Your Significant Other

Mom’s been picking up hints from your phone conversations that something pretty amazing is going on between you and your new special someone, and she’s anxious to put a face to the name you keep mentioning. Your siblings are equally excited to interrogate — er, meet — your boo. It’s rare for your family to come together outside of the holiday season, so if you’re serious about your S.O. this might be the perfect time to invite them to make the rounds.

“If your family is constantly begging to meet [them], it is time to bring them home for Thanksgiving,” encourages Grapevine Gossip relationship expert Caitlyn Paltsios. “It shows your family is interested… and you can also see if your S.O. is excited to meet your family.”

4. You’ve Both Traded "I Love You's"

Maybe you said “I love you” first, or maybe bae made the initial move. Either way, you’re both swapping that all-important word pretty comfortably now; you might want to consider swapping it over a heaping bowl of mashed potatoes. “‘I love you’ is such a powerful statement for any relationship,” notes counselor and Tech Talk Therapy owner Connie Omari. “Once this line has been crossed, you naturally become more open with one another. This closeness should be solidified by allowing your S.O. to interact with the other people that you love.”

5. Your S.O.'s Family Has Already Invited You To Gatherings

If you’ve already had a chance to attend family dinners and maybe a birthday party or two with your S.O., it’s your turn to extend an invitation (assuming, of course, that you share their serious feelings and there aren’t other concerns as to why it might be unsafe or unhealthy to reciprocate the invitation). “If they are including you in small family events, they are looking to integrate you into their larger lives and are likely ready to have you do the same,” Schreiner explains. This doesn’t mean that you should make the invitation purely out of obligation — only that you should seriously consider it when they’ve already made the first move.

6. You Can't Imagine Spending Thanksgiving Apart

“Thanksgiving has historically been known for being around people with whom we care very much about,” reminds Omari. “If your S.O. means a lot to you — maybe even the world — it’s likely you will feel very uncomfortable at the thought of being separated for Thanksgiving.” Tune in to your feelings and visualize experiencing this very special occasion as a couple. If this seems like the only way you would want to celebrate, then you have nothing to lose by asking! If, however, visualizing this makes you feel anxious or uncomfortable, psychotherapist and co-founder ofA Good First Date Rachel Perlstein suggests that it’s probably best to rain check until next year.

Sigh the bar has been set HIGH, and I can't wait to see how they continue to grow with time.

Despite the fact that paparazzi love to see (and often follow) celebrity couples, Freddie just revealed how he and Sarah have been able to keep things low-key. When Oldish's podcast co-host Randy Spelling asked how they stay out of the public — and how intentional they have to be to keep a low profile — Freddie said it's "by choice," and that "you can control it to a certain degree."

"I don't know how deliberate [others] are in trying to avoid that BS," he said on the podcast. "I know how easy it's been for us because I don't go anywhere. I don't go to parties. People don't see Sarah and I out and about at the popular places. We have our restaurants that we like, and they're not super trendy in places where paparazzi hang out. So we're good at avoiding it."

An exclusive source for PEOPLE reports that DiCaprio's "old school friends" were there — á la Brad Pitt and a handful of directors and producers. Apparently, the source said DiCaprio was thrilled all night. "He was incredibly happy and hugging all his guests. Leo was on a high the whole night."

As for Brad Pitt, allegedly he was also "in a great mood, was super social and greeting everyone" and hung out in the front patio all night. And everyone else? PEOPLE notes that guests danced "into the early a.m. hours."

Notably missing from the celebrations is BFF Kate Winslet. The pair have been practically inseparable since their Titanicdays, so it seems surprising that she wouldn't make an appearance. The likely explanation, though, is that Winslet is working on her upcoming projects like The Spotand Trust.

October 30, 2024 — Ethan Slater Finally Speaks Out About His Relationship With Ariana Grande

Almost two years after meeting Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater finally opened up about their relationship in a new interview with GQ. “Obviously, it was a really super big year and I think there was something that was really difficult about things in your private life being commented on and looked at by the public," he says. "There were a lot of big changes in private lives that were really happening, so it’s really hard to see people who don’t know anything about what’s happening commenting on it and speculating, and then getting things wrong about the people you love. So just to address that part of it, that feels really hard."

But the clouds also came with silver linings. “Of course, it was an amazing year and a really beautiful thing, and I’m just really excited," he continues. "I’m just really, really proud of Ari and the work she’s done on this. She’s poured herself into it. I’m really proud that I got to be there for that part of it, and I’m really excited to be there for this next step of it when the world gets to see the amazing thing that she did.”

In an exclusive interview with Brit + Co, Ethan Slater couldn't stop hyping up Ari's humor. And if you saw her hosting SNL, then you definitely understand. "I cannot wait for like the roll out of everything that Bowen said that isn't in the movie, or Ari, honestly, said that isn't in the movie. Just take after take," he says. "The moments where somebody broke, it was always great. There's one that's seared into my memory of, in Doctor Dillamond's classroom, I don't remember what Ari said but she got Cynthia [Erivo] and it's just the two of them across the way and they're staring at each other and she got her so good. There's something really wonderful about breaking. It's delightful."

He also praised Ariana and Cynthia for how they welcomed the rest of the cast their first days on set. "[They] would hug everyone who came in," he continues. "This huge movie is something that we've been waiting for for 20 years on a big scale with the biggest stars in the world, it could have felt really intimidating and it felt really familial immediately."
