Get ‘Forked Up’ With Food Blog Thug Kitchen’s New Podcast

Thug Kitchen, the obscenity-laced vegan cooking series from Michelle Davis and Matt Holloway, has grown from an anonymous food blog to one that amassed a large, dedicated following, three best-selling cookbooks, and a line of merch. Now, the LA-based, straight-talking duo has launched a podcast. Forked Up takes a close look at where food meets culture and politics. With Davis and Holloway’s signature no-nonsense conversation style and guests including Laila Ali and Ron Finley, the podcast takes on food deserts, everyday meal prep, and the economy of cauliflower in relation to rice. Recently we chatted with the pair about their newest venture, which foods they can’t wait to cook with, and how to avoid being “that vegan” at the BBQ. Hint: Don’t even think about bringing fake meat to the gathering.

Brit + Co: What’s been the challenging or surprising part about making a podcast?

Matt Holloway: Our guests, as soon as they get there, they’re like, “Where is the food?” And I’m like “G*d d*mn it; I need to cater this podcast?” [laughs]

Michelle Davis: Yeah they’re literally like, “This is a food podcast. Where is the food?” I hate [how] on food podcasts, when they’re talking all about the food, and they’re eating it, and I can’t see it or taste it. There’s so many other facets to food and food culture. We want to use the podcast for that.

B+C: Why focus on how food interacts with the bigger picture of American culture and politics?

MH: Food is not just a unifying thread through all of our lives but is a cornerstone. You do it three times a day.

MD: When you treat [food] like a world apart, it makes the conversation only for rich people or people who are considered “experts,” and it leaves a lot of regular folks out of the conversation. They have just as much skin in the game as chefs who make f*cking ramen burgers and sh*t — even more so. We need to talk about the food desert stuff, because LA has a beautiful food culture, but it also has an enormous food desert. To talk about one and not talk about the other is putting blinders on.

B+C: Alot of our readers are new to veganism. With summer coming up, do you have any advice for handling BBQs?

MH: I think you should focus on sides. That’s what everyone is there for anyway. That’s the sh*t that people focus on, so bring that.

MD: Don’t roll up with fake meat to a BBQ, because people are going to make fun of you. Bring things that people would be stoked to eat but doesn’t just scream ,”I’m a weirdo who only eats wheat grass.”

B+C: What produce is coming into season in the next few months that you are excited for?

MD: I f*cking love stone fruit. You can’t eat those year-round. But oh man, peaches in the summer — I will eat myself sick.

MH: That real nice, thin asparagus. If you go to the grocery store right now, looking at asparagus, that sh*t looks like a tree trunk. That’s not what people should be cooking.

If you’re on the lookout for warm-weather sides from Thug Kitchen, Davis and Holloway shared their favorites: a spiked ice tea, Mexican-style grilled corn, and tempeh kabobs (see recipe below) from their second cookbook, Thug Kitchen Party Grub: For Social Motherf*ckers. Get grilling!

GRILLED VEGGIE AND TEMPEH KEBABS WITH CHIMICHURRI SAUCE

(Makes about 10 kebabs)

Ingredients:

Chimichurri Sauce:

  • 1 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • 1⁄4 cup chopped shallot or white onion
  • 1⁄4 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 serrano pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon salt

Veggie and Tempeh Kababs:

  • 8 ounces tempeh, cut into large cubes
  • 1⁄2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
  • 1 tablespoon olive or grapeseed oil
  • 2 small zucchini or yellow squash
  • 1⁄2 red or white onion
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 10 bamboo or wooden skewers
  • 2 teaspoons of your favorite no-salt, all purpose seasoning
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon paprika

Directions:

1. Chimichurri Sauce: Throw all the sauce ingredients together in a food processor or blender and let that f*cker run until it looks kinda like a chunky pesto. If it’s getting a little stuck, add a tablespoon of water to get that sh*t going again.

2. Veggie and Tempeh Kabobs: Place a steamer insert and a couple inches of water in a small pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Add the tempeh, cover, and steam until it starts to smell kinda nutty, about 10 minutes.

3. While the tempeh is steaming, mix the broth, soy sauce (or tamari,) liquid smoke, and oil together in a medium bowl.

4. When the tempeh is done, dump it in the bowl with the marinade and mix it together so every piece gets some of that flavor on it. Let it sit, stirring occasionally, while you chop the veggies.

5. Cut the zucchini, onion, and bell pepper into large chunks about the size of the tempeh cubes. Stick them and the tempeh on the skewers alternating ingredients until you fill them all up. You know what the f*ck to do; you’ve seen a f*cking kebab before (Don’t throw the tempeh marinade out.).

6. Bring your grill to a medium-high heat.

7. In a small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons of that tempeh marinade, the no-salt seasoning, and the paprika. Using a pastry brush or spoon, spread that sh*t all over the kebabs. That’s right, we’re layering the flavors, b*tches. Place the kebabs on the grill and cook for 7 to 9 minutes, turning every couple minutes. You are looking for those bomb-ass grill marks and for the veggies to get golden brown around the edges. If they start looking a little dry before they are done, brush them with a little bit of olive oil or some of the remaining marinade. Take them off the grill and let them cool for a hot minute.

8. To serve, you can either pour the chimichurri sauce over the kebabs or serve it on the side so people can dip how they want. Up to you. Or forget other people and just make these for yourself. B.Y.O.K.

We’re deep in the reboot, prequel, and sequel era. Hunger Games: Sunrise On the Reaping, the One Tree Hill sequel series, Princess Diaries 3, and more have been announced (or in OTH’s case, leaked) — which most fans have greeted with open arms. With lots of chatter about our favorite iconic characters making a comeback, there have been quite a few eyeballs on a certain timeless movie that’s already garnered two sequels: Pitch Perfect. Here's what actress and producer Elizabeth Banks had to say about a potential Pitch Perfect 4.

With the 13th anniversary of the first movie on September 28th, Banks (who’s also the new Chief Creative Officer for luxury canned wine brand Archer Roose) told Brit + Co that the cast knew the film was meant to last. “We knew that we were making something... I don't want to say cult [but] we knew it was truly funny and was truly about underdogs and had great characters — it tends to stick around,” she says. And trust us when we say that ‘aca-scuse’ me still makes its way into daily conversations.

Banks continues that the trilogy is “about coming of age, [which] really speaks to teenagers who feel not seen.” She jokes that, “acapella was for losers,” similar to the "loser" trope that infiltrated successful early 2000’s films like Bring It On, which makes it a project so many viewers are able to connect to. “I will say once I saw the reception to the movie early on, I think we knew that we had something that was very special.” If you don’t know the “Riff Off” by heart, you’re lying.

As rumors continue to swirl about a possible Pitch Perfect 4, we had to get to the bottom of whether or not she’d be up to reprising her role as Gail, the comedic acapella host.

“We're always looking for ways to give the fans something,” she says. “I think we would never want to be accused of a money grab.” And in a time where Hollywood continues to revisit past successes, the industry is no stranger to flop sequels — remember Fantastic Beasts (either movie after the original), Joker: Folie à Deux, Legally Blonde 2, or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny?

And while the Pitch Perfect cast would love to make a fourth film in theory, it would need to be just right. “It's okay that it just lives and is its thing. I love that people want it, but I want to make sure that it delivers,” Banks tells Brit + Co. “There [are] three great movies, and we know these characters inside and out. If the idea isn't amazing, I don't want the audience to be disappointed.”

The Cocaine Bear star added that she is always trying to make “a deposit on the brand” and “never wants to make a withdrawal” — meaning that the franchise is continually so highly-praised that there’s no need to take away from it unnecessarily.

Universal Pictures

Banks jokes that fans “just want the same thing again” (AKA the nostalgia and comedy coming from the original movie). Her former costar, Anna Kendrick, recently told People that she “would love” to work on a Pitch Perfect set again, but believes that “Rebel Wilson is really like the steam engine of everything.” So it seems to be a never say never situation, if you can aca-believe it.

More of a horror lover than a holiday movie fanatic? You might agree that nothing beats an old school slashers. I Know What You Did Last Summer, which stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Freddie Prinze Jr., premiered in 1997, combines everything we love about coming of age movies — friends, summer vacation, and drama — with just enough terror to send a chill down your spine. And just like the original, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot features some of the hottest names in Hollywood.

  • A new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is coming to theaters almost 30 years after the original.
  • The cast includes Lola Tung, Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Gabbriette, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Chase Sui Wonders.
  • Plot details are being kept under wraps but we know Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise his role, meaning we can expect an expansion of the original movie.

Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette are the most recent additions to the I Know What You Did Last Summer cast, which also includes Outer Banks’ Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Chase Sui Wonders.

Plus, fans of the OG movie will be excited to know Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise his role from the original movie — and Jennifer Love Hewitt is also in talks to return!

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Plot

Columbia Pictures

In I Know What You Did Last Summer, four friends are terrorized by a man with a hook after they hit him with their car and try to cover it up. In the recent TV adaptation, which features 6 friends, the group accidentally runs over one of their own.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is sure to feature another hit-and-run with a juicy Gen Z twist. Do Revenge's Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing and co-writing alongside Sam Lansky. According to The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the casting news, the movie will take the same approach as the Scream reboot, mixing the original film's cast with the next generation of stars. So while the movie will cater to fans of the original, it's not a copy and paste reboot.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Release Date

Columbia Pictures

The new reboot will tentatively hit theaters July 18, 2025. I'm already prepping for next year's Slasher Summer!

If there's one movie that will make you consider the advice you'd give your younger self, it's My Old Ass. The movie, streaming on Prime Video November 7, follows Elliot (Maisy Stella), who comes face-to-face with an older version of herself (Aubrey Plaza) during a mushroom trip. Throughout their time together, they share heartfelt advice, and, apparently, a lot of laughter.

"I feel like we absolutely [laughed while filming], but honestly the breaks worked for the scene," Maisy Stella tells Brit + Co's Chloe Williams. "So I feel like even when we're laughing, it's like not technically like, 'Oh cut, we have to go again.' You just keep going. But I think there was some real genuine laughter shared between between us two."

Maisy Stella And Megan Park Loved Working With Aubrey Plaza

cdn.ex.co

"I just remember there was a YouTube video of her that you showed me," says director Megan Park. "I don't know which one it was, but...this is, I think, where the kiss idea of the touching the ass [the scene that mentions the movie's title] came in because you were like 'God, she's so hot.'"

"Working with Aubrey was truly the coolest thing I'll ever get to do," Maisy adds. "I'm such a huge fan of her and have been forever. And so when I found out it was her doing it, I think I did a standing backflip."

Even though Aubrey Plaza was only on set for a week or two, she was able to form a real connection with Maisy, which is the mark of "the most genius actors" for Megan. "They didn't have a lot of time together, but they were so good at the time they did have together, just really being open and vulnerable and building that chemistry really quickly," she says. "Maisy has an older sister, Aubrey has younger sisters. So there was a kind of a natural dynamic that they fell into and you have really similar energies and similar senses of humor that just were such a great match."

During their conversation, Aubrey Plaza's Elliot gives Maisy Stella some serious life advice, and the movie really got Maisy and Megan to consider what advice they would give their younger selves. (They both adamantly express they don't want to know the future).

"Just to be a little more like alert and more present," Maisy says. "I think as a kid, I was like super unaware and in a way that was like beautiful but also like, I wasn't really seeing, I was kind of just looking around. Honestly I would tell my younger self what Aubrey told [my] Elliott in the movie."

"The message of the movie and that time goes by so quickly — it's not forever, everything changes all the time," Megan says. "Just a gentle reminder. But also I think it would be beautiful to go back and meet your younger self. That's such a therapeutic thing and just be reminded of the pace of your life back then."

"Not to be a monster, but I would definitely be like 'invest in Apple!'" she jokingly adds. Megan's sense of humor totally shines through the movie, and it can be summed up in the scene that shows us Elliot's youngest brother has a wall completely covered in photos of Saoirse Ronan.

Maisy Stella And Megan Park Spill On That Justin Bieber Dance Sequence

Marni Grossman/Amazon MGM Studios

"You know, it's funny, now I'm like, 'I want to put pictures of my kids,'" Megan says. "I have a new baby so I'm in very mom mode. Just obsessed with my children. I've been away from them a lot for work, so I could gladly live in a bedroom just smothered of photos of my children all over every square."

"Maddie Ziegler," Maisy says when I ask who she'd dedicate a wall to. "Maddie Ziegler is literally my answer...Yeah, I could go into who I would have on my wall, but I'm going to keep it at that." (ICYMI, Maisy seemingly went Instagram official with The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey in September).

Another hilarious moment comes when Elliot starts imagining a Justin Bieber concert...with herself as Justin. But has the global sensation seen the video?! "I've been waiting for my phone to ring and it hasn't yet," Maisy jokes. "I actually, like, never want him to see it. Ever. I know his team had to approve of it, but I don't know if he approved of it. It could have been them on his behalf, he's a busy man."

But with moments of levity comes serious and relatable issues that mark this movie as a coming of age film: family pressure, financial stress, and devastating relationships. The story is impactful as a viewer, but even more so for the team involved in making it.

"The months after [filming] my whole life had just kind of shifted and everything kind of rose to the top," Maisy says. "It changed so much of how I think and how I actively live, and I feel like it kind of did that for a lot of the people that were on the set honestly, just because it was such a like specific experience with such a loud message and so much nostalgia that I really took it all and kept it inside."

"It set the bar pretty high, both personally and creatively, in terms of what I want that next set experience to be like," Megan adds. "Working with people that you really care about that [become] like family. It really was a beautiful, hopefully not rare, but it was a really therapeutic, wonderful, just like ego-less environment that was so creative and so fun and healing."
