This New App Will Help Answer Your Most Private Health Questions

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to not totally freak out every time you scroll through the morning news — especially as a woman. From Missouri considering making it legal to fire women who use birth control to the Senate healthcare repeal bill that just won’t quit, it feels like we’re constantly bombarded with political and cultural messaging telling us we’re not in control of our bodies (and if we are now, we won’t be for long). We know how stressful and disheartening it can be, but we’re thankful for birth control advocates like Sophia Bush and entrepreneurs like Carolyn Witte who are committed to using their platforms to help empower, educate, and energize women when it comes to taking control of their own health. In fact, Witte has recently launched Ask Tia, a mobile app designed to act as a woman’s private digital health assistant. To learn more about this revolutionary (and, honestly, pretty fun) app, we chatted with Witte herself.

Brit + Co: Who is Tia, exactly? Are we talking to a bot or an IRL person when we use the app?

Carolyn Witte: Today, Tia is part-machine, part-human-powered, built with doctors and designed for millennial women. In practice, what this means is the vast majority of the time if you ask a question, the bot (or computer) will answer. Because Tia is still in her infancy, if you ask a question she doesn’t understand yet, it’s sent to one of the Tia “Wing Women” — human health educators trained in sexual and reproductive health — who are there to give your question some extra TLC. We strategically don’t play any of those frustrating “do I understand you?” guessing games to ensure a high-quality user experience.

Importantly, Tia is private and anonymous; the only identifiable piece of information we have about you is your phone number. Whether in “bot” mode or “Wing Woman” mode, you can feel at ease that you are communicating in total privacy.

Lastly, while we provide personalized, user-friendly health information about a range of reproductive and sexual health care issues, we do not provide medical guidance. If what you’re dealing with requires a doctor, Tia will refer you to a medical provider (never without asking you first!) who is better suited to provide you with quality care and get you treatment if necessary.

B+C: What sort of health concerns is Tia best at addressing?

CW: Tia’s “superpower” is making complicated, misunderstood, and often taboo topics less complicated. For example, she’s a pro at helping you figure out if you should get an IUD (and if the hormonal or non-hormonal kind is your jam), what an “abnormal” Pap smear actually means, and what to do if you missed your birth control pill (hint-hint: It depends on a whole lot of factors, like where in your cycle you are, how many pills you missed, etc.). Tia can also track your cycle and symptoms, send you birth control reminders, and find you doctors nearby in your insurance network.

Most importantly, Tia never makes a decision for you or tells you what to do. Consider her a trusted, reliable resource that gives you personalized information so that you can make an independent and informed decision for your own body and life — with confidence.

B+C: Does Tia track health concerns over time? Somehow, decades later, our periods (and ensuing symptoms) always come as a surprise.

CW: Yes! One of the coolest things about Tia is she learns you and gets smarter the more you use her. She’s a pro at remembering stuff that we often forget — say, when you got that IUD inserted, or what days last cycle you were crazy stressed out — and uses that intel to help you take proactive measures to manage your health.

Additionally, Tia is all about contextual history. We intentionally designed the product to be a single, ongoing “thread,” so you can reference back to old messages or information shared to take action on that later — just like a texting convo with your best girlfriend.

B+C: Honestly, Tia is such a great idea (and feels like a long time coming!). What made you decide to create the app?

CW: I started Tia in part to solve my own pain point of not being able to find the right birth control. When we live in a world where everything is personalized, it seems crazy to me that something as central to many female lives as birth control lacks any personalization whatsoever.

Not only are people “guessing” about their birth control, they are guessing about so many other parts of their healthcare experience. Tia aims to solve this guesswork problem by bringing much-needed personalization — paired with compassion and a whole lot of sass — into a new model of care centered around the typical female experience.

B+C: Tia’s mission is all about empowering women to make the best decisions for their body, which feels necessary and pertinent in today’s political climate. Can you talk a little about how you hope Tia can contribute to this era of empowerment?

CW: Choice is a “loaded” word, but an important word for me personally as a founder and very much at the core ethos of Tia. At a time when women’s health faces so many threats, we believe our mission to help women exercise choice in their healthcare decisions, big and small, is more important than ever.

In many ways, I think choice has been politicized because it’s being used the wrong way… there’s a semantic problem where all too often, we use “choice” and “decision” interchangeably, when in fact, they are very different.

In our view, choice is a principle, not an action; it’s an inviolable right that all people should be able to exercise in their healthcare decisions. A decision is the act of making a choice. You can disagree with someone’s decision, but not their right to have a choice in the matter.

As both a product and a company, we aim to help women recognize this important distinction and empower women to feel ownership over the decisions they make for their own bodies and lives.

There are days when you’re feeling epic. This overcast Saturday morning at The Grove (a popular outdoor shopping mall in LA) was one of those days, and I’d like to think that it was for Ian Somerhalder too — thanks to his latest collaboration with Nutro. The pet food company hosted the first-ever Farmer’s Market for Dogs, and it was just as adorably therapeutic as you’d think it’d be.

Now, it’s not lost on me that Somerhalder is a well-known face in the entertainment industry, thanks to his performances on The Vampire Diaries, Lost, V Wars, and more. So, his demeanor throughout the morning reflected exactly how I thought it would: as a total pro. He knew exactly where to find the camera, how to approach continuous interview questions, and made sure to greet workers kindly — including myself.

“So I’m going to ask you a few questions,” I told Somerhalder, after we finished our introductions. ”Oh, don’t do it. Prepare to be underwhelmed,” he quickly joked. Little did he know that as a longtime fan of The Vampire Diaries, there’s nothing he can really say that would ‘underwhelm’ me.

“One of the amazing things we're excited about is the takeaway that we hope people get from this, which is showing pet parents that they can be an incredible positive force of change,” Somerhalder told me. With this initiative, the actor explained that Nutro intends to “help shepherd, fund, and educate the farmers within their network to start adapting healthy soil practices.”

The farmers market contained everything from a Willy Wonka factory standard of treats, to a build your own flower bouquet station, to a section where you can get your dog’s astrology read (I know, that’s so LA). Of course, there were also many dogs (of which I pet mostly all of them), and a beaming Ian Somerhalder who so graciously led the ribbon cutting. Of those dogs, was Somerhalder’s twelve-year-old pup named Nietzsche, who was as sweet as can be (and yes, I pet her as well). The actor noted that he found Nietzsche as a stray while filming The Vampire Diaries in Georgia, and took her in pretty instantaneously.

Speaking of The Vampire Diaries, I asked him how he felt about the recent 15th anniversary of the CW series airing on television, which was marked on September 10th.

“You know, it's so funny,” Somerhalder answered. “Obviously, it was a lifetime ago, but it feels like it was yesterday. And so, you know, obviously streaming changed the game. The show is one of the most viewed shows in history, period — that's been seen by over a billion people, which is 1/8 of the planet.” I later teased that myself, sisters, and friends were likely responsible for a big portion of those streams.

“[The Vampire Diaries] allowed me to build a platform,” Somerhalder continued. “To work on things that were very close to my heart, but at the global scale, and it's allowed me to help create, enact or build the road for a lot of change, and it's why I have this amazing partnership.”

The Absorption Company founder continued, noting that filming the show “was an unbelievable time,” and he “cannot believe” how much time has passed. Since then, Somerhalder has added environmental advocate (as a former UNEP Global Goodwill Ambassador and aid in the Netflix documentary, Common Ground) and entrepreneur (in both the wellness and alcohol space) to his long list of successful titles.

This is when he panned to the phone camera I had pointing at him. “So, everyone who's seen the show, watched the show, supported us — me — in any way, shape and form regarding the show — I thank you from the bottom of my heart, because you have been a part of this journey with me.” Somerhalder then thanked the media, partners, and all those who have contributed to promoting “the show to be one of the most viewed things that was ever created.” I can’t say I didn’t appreciate that journalist nod.

“So here's to 15 years,” he finished. That’s when we insinuated a fake ‘cheers,’ with Brother’s Bourbon filled in our hypothetical glasses, obviously.

Segwaying from the bourbon brand, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to ask Somerhalder about his longtime friendship withThe Vampire Diaries co-star and business partner, Paul Wesley. With the show falling deep into the supernatural, and their relationship often unserious over fun social media clips, I questioned how they kept it together on-screen without constant laughter.

“I mean, we had to be serious,” Somerhalder said. “But, you know, you're like running from ghosts and vampires and stuff, and then you just cut and someone makes a fart joke, and 130 people erupt in laughter.” Cue my own giggle. “There's only so much you can run for your life, we laugh. That's how we kept each other sane.” I believe it, I told him. The eight-season show carries storylines from mythical sirens to evil doppelgängers.

Somerhalder added, “Paul and I spent eight years on the show, and now we have another company, and now it's 15 years.” He paused, smiling, “It's my longest relationship.” We shared another laugh. That’s when I went back to petting Nietzsche, who, it turns out, is just as professional in front of the camera as Somerhalder is. I’d expect nothing less.

No matter what kind of day you're having, Marissa Cooper's having a worse one. Mischa Barton's The O.C. character went through the ringer during the first three seasons of the teen drama (remember how she overdosed in Tijuana...and also saw her parents post-hookup after their divorce?).

And during her time on The O.C., Mischa Barton struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. She was arrested for a DUI in 2007 and eventually received involuntary psychiatric hospitalization in 2009 after allegedly threatening to end her own life. And in a new interview, Peter Gallagher (who played Sandy Cohen on the show) says he's "just so grateful" for "the fact that she’s still alive."

The O.C. follows Ryan Atwood, who moves in with the Cohens after getting kicked out of his mom's house, and starts a relationship with Marissa shortly after. While Peter Gallagher played Adam Brody's TV dad instead of Mischa's, Sandy was a definitely father figure for Marissa, and it seems like Peter felt that same responsibility off camera.

"I’ve always felt very protective of her," Peter told The Independent. "First fame is toxic. First fame can kill you. She was 16 years old when she started working with us, so just the fact that she’s still alive, I’m just so grateful."

“You can go to therapy every day for the rest of your life,” Mischa said in a 2023 interview with The Sunday Times. “There’s just a certain amount of trauma [from] all that I went through, particularly in my early twenties, that just doesn’t go away overnight.”

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage revealed that season 1 overdose not only served as a cliffhanger, but gave “network executives an escape hatch on a performer they had been wary about” (via People). But Mischa Barton got her big break, becoming "how people knew the show," and (thankfully) Marissa recovered — only to die after a car crash in season 3.

As hard as that season 3 ending is to watch, Mischa did have the opportunity to watch it with Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke for the first time on their rewatch podcast. "It needed to be a thing, after everything she's been through, but if it's here I'll watch it with you," Mischa says.

"I couldn't do it, Mischa, I couldn't do it," Rachel adds. "But I'm going to do it if you're going to do it."

Mischa says even though being written off the show "was a little bit of a bummer," it wasn't necessarily a surprise. "The character was just doing too much," she told Vanity Fairin 2023. "And I think they ran out of places for her to go. It was not the best thing in the world, [but] there wasn’t much you could do at that point. It was whether she could sail off into the sunset, or die. At that point, I guess it’s better to have the more dramatic ending.”

Olivia Munn bared it all in her latest SKIMS ad, proving you don't have to hide your scars. The actress posed in a campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, supporting Susan G. Komen®and highlighting her own journey with the disease. She looked absolutely stunning in every photo, but the most gorgeous moment was the way Munn didn't shy away from showing her mastectomy scars. She spoke to TODAY about her experience during the shoot, and why she ultimately decided to ditch her insecurities. Here's what she had to say!

Munn shared with TODAYthat she didn't initially plan to show her scars on the set. The campaign was focused on her recovery post-breast cancer diagnosis, but the makeup artist had a hard time covering up the scars throughout the shoot. She explained that she took a look in the mirror and thought, "I’m done being insecure about my scars." From there, she took the idea to show them off to the SKIMS team — and the rest is history.

And while she was scared to be so vulnerable on camera, this was ultimately a really empowering move for Munn. She elaborated that there are "so many women that have these same scars" who feel just as insecure as she did about them — and she really hopes those women see this ad. "Skims is so iconic and associated with beauty and sex appeal, and cancer really doesn't have that same connotation," she said. "So I just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it."

The star also took to Instagram to give a behind-the-scenes explanation of her experience. She reiterated that she was "done being insecure" about her scars. "Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought," she wrote. "I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see these photos and feel all the love I’m sending."

She also shared that SKIMS will donate 10% of their bra sales (except bralettes) to Susan G. Komen® — a charity dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer — from October 23-31 in stores and online. "It’s really meaningful to be part of an initiative that supports research and helps countless individuals impacted by breast cancer," she said.

All of this comes on the heels of Munn's announcement earlier this year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed the diagnosis came after recently tested negatively for well-known breast cancer genes and had normal results from her annual mammogram — but her doctor to check her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score. The test showed Munn had a 37% risk of breast cancer, so she pushed for more answers that eventually lead to her diagnosis.

Since then, Munn shared with PEOPLE that she had 4 surgeries in 10 months and underwent medically-induced menopause — all the while juggling being a new mom with husband John Mulaney. She shared, "I'm lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day."

After that March announcement, it's clear Munn is dedicated to raising awareness for women's health — and particularly their options. While chatting about the SKIMS campaign, Munn told TODAY, "You've got to go your doctor and you inundate them with information and you don't stop until they give you the test you need."
