Hack Your Hardware With the Help of New Site, Tindie

What if we told you there was a marketplace out there dedicated to promoting hardware hacks, à la DIY digital camera, smart home systems, ultra thin, flexible circuit boards and cocktail dispensing robots? Chances are, you’d want to know about that. (Hasn’t everyone dreamed about the real-life Rosie Jetson making martinis for them?) Well, now there is one place to support hardware heading in that direction, and that place is called Tindie.

Creator Emile Petrone, a longtime user of Arduino and Rapberry Pi, saw all the incredible things being talked about on hacking forums, so he posed a question on Reddit: Would anyone out there be interested in a marketplace to sell whatever hardware it is they’re hacking? The answer was y-e-s. So two years ago he launched the site, and today, Tindie users have processed over 10,000 orders, shipped to more than 71 countries and worked with everyone from NASA and Google, to librarians and part time enthusiasts. So yeah, you could say people were interested.

Here’s something you already know: Cheaper manufacturing and rapid prototyping have produced the maker movement. Here’s something you might not know: With that movement, subcultures are starting to bubble up. One of those subcultures is this group of hardware hackers. In fact, Petrone is comparing what’s happening in these beginning phases of hacking to what was going on during the frontier days of personal computing. Which is why most of the products on the site look extremely homespun. Petrone is quick to remind everyone of the first appearance of the Apple I: “It wasn’t a fully assembled computer. It was hand-soldered in Steve Jobs’ garage.”

When the site first launched, Petrone thought about running Tindie like a Kickstarter. But in the end, he did the exact opposite. While concepts and big ideas are lovely, real prototyping and actual manufacturing is king. If you don’t have a tangible products on hand (most sellers have less than 100) and know that it works, then there’s no way to list it on Tindie. Once you start getting sales there’s plenty of room to do what hackers love doing — tinkering, refining, improving. If you put a product on Tindie and it sells, the people have spoken: They like your project, and they’re funding it the old timey way. By paying for actual products.

There’s a reason Tindie promotes and fosters physical goods rather than abstract dreams, ideas and concepts. Petrone argues that without having real life manufacturing experience, even if it is under 100 units, the makers don’t have a realistic idea of costs. The concern is that if a particular campaign gets massive funding, it might actually be detrimental to the success of the product and the maker due to their lack of knowledge. There is a strong possibility that they’ve underestimated their manufacturing costs. And while we’re still huge supporters of Kickstarter and Indiegogo, we can’t deny the guy has a point.

If you hop over to Tindie right now, you’ll notice there aren’t tons of household items available yet, but with the rapid rate of Tindie’s growth, we can see that changing in the next few years. One of the current top sellers is Chirp!, an automatic plant watering system that can sense soil moisture thanks to a built-in sensor. And for a mere $15, you can fund someone’s idea without having to wait a year until it’s an actually product. Instant gratification, it’s a beautiful thing.

Lavender in a latte is sheer heaven. I’ve DIY’ed my own lavender syrup before (it’s too easy), but you can also buy it ready-made! Any sort of syrup makes for an easy coffee upgrade, really. Brands like Jordan's Skinny Mixes and Torani are my go-to’s, and they sell a vast array of flavors to suit any taste!

2. Cinnamon

I’m convinced cinnamon belongs in everything. I put it in my protein pancakes, yogurt bowls, and cookies, but it’s also a supreme add-in for coffee and even matcha lattes! The warm flavor notes of cinnamon are also perfect for cozying up in the fall and winter.

3. Honey

Cinnamon in coffee gets even better when you put honey in the mix with cinnamon. It’s one of my pal’s absolute go-to’s in lattes (hot or iced), but it also works just as well in hot drip coffees or cold brews.

4. Oat milk

Oat milk (or milk of any kind) is a perfect coffee hack for those who can’t stand black coffee. It helps cut the sharpness and acidity of the brew, adding some creaminess and color to each sip. I find that oat milk is the best pairing for breakfast time!

In place of milk, I also really like adding a splash of a protein shake to my coffee for a dose of creaminess and flavor. The protein is just an added bonus!

6. Brown sugar

I’ve used brown sugar many times to make a Starbucks copycat brown sugar shaken espresso right at home. I’ll simply add equal parts instant coffee and brown sugar to a mason jar with ice, shake it up, and top it off with cinnamon and milk.

If you prefer sipping on something a little less fancy, adding a spoonful to a plain hot coffee could be really delightful, too!

7. Cold foam

The final (and tastiest) coffee hack I drink on the regular is cold foam! Target sells a good range of cold foam cans in various flavors, but I’ve really come to love the salted caramel iteration. It’s perfect for topping of iced coffees for a nice mid-day treat!

Sorry Jude Law, The Best 'The Holiday' Relationship Has Nothing To Do With Romance

Just like Gilmore Girls fans, The Holiday movie lovers get very passionate about which couple they love most: Iris and Miles (Kate Winslet and Jack Black) or Amanda and Graham (Cameron Diaz and Jude Law). But despite the fact Miles composing a song for Iris makes me swoon every single time, when I watch the movie, I can't help but think about how the true love story of the movie isn't between any of the romantic couples — it's between Iris and her new BFF Arthur.

Here's why the true love story in The Holiday is actually between Kate Winslet's Iris and Eli Wallach's Arthur.

The premise of The Holiday movie is pretty simple: Iris and Amanda swap homes for two weeks over Christmas to avoid their disastrous love lives, unknowingly agreeing to an adventure that ultimately changes them — and their love lives — forever. (Oh what I wouldn't give to hop on a plane to Europe to avoid boys. What a dream). When she lands in Los Angeles, Iris is totally overwhelmed by Amanda's gorgeous home, the DVD setup, and gigantic bed, but the aspect of her holiday that really shines is her ability to connect with people.

We see Iris learn all of the gardeners' names (as well as the mailman's) barely a week after arriving, and when she notices Amanda's elderly neighbor Arthur walking alone, she immediately pulls over to help him find his house. (Also, sidebar: this scene always terrifies me because why is Arthur in the middle of the street?! Why aren't you on a side walk, A?!).

Iris helps Arthur home and takes a look around his living room (which boasts at least one Emmy and Academy Award each) before inviting him to have dinner with her and boom! The greatest relationship in the movie is born.

Arthur empowers Iris to be "the leading lady in her own life."

These two become fast friends, as Iris confides in him about her disastrous love life that very same night, and he offers her a beautiful piece of advice about acting like "the leading lady in your own life" (remember folks, this was decades before main character energy). Iris also reminds him just how much of a role he played in Hollywood by helping him prep for his Writers Guild of America gala with strength training so he can climb the stairs without his walker.

So though it's not romantic, Iris and Arthur's relationship is the true love story of The Holiday because of how much love and confidence they offer each other. Neither of them expect anything in return — they just enjoy being together.

And Iris gives Arthur his confidence back too!

Soon, it's time to head off to the WGA gala, and Arthur gives Iris a corsage, apologizing if it's corny or doesn't match her outfit. Iris declares she's "looking for corny," and it's such a small moment that really illustrates that the way they've empowered each other has changed their lives forever.

Iris helps Arthur feel sure of himself again, while Arthur's encouragement helps Iris find her power...and kick her ex Jasper out of her life forever! (Plus Arthur definitely picks up on the vibes between Iris and Miles during their Hanukkah dinner party. The ultimate wingman!).

When Iris and Arthur arrive at the WGA gala, and a sold-out crowd gives Arthur a standing ovation, it's clear he wasn't expecting so many people to care about his work. And in his overwhelming shock, he has Iris to lean on. Iris and Arthur don't only care about each other, they depend on each other, and their trust, love, and understanding is just the cherry on top. And sorry Jude Law, but I'll take that over romance any day.
