Tiny Spaces: An SF Couple’s Stylish Loft Studio

Last week in our Tiny Spaces video series, we took you to an adorable personality-filled San Francisco studio. Next up, were sticking around SF to get some small-space living inspo from Nicole and Donnie Wang and their stylish 537-square-foot studio. Tour their tiny loft to see how they have blended styles, art *and* closet space — not to mention, added tons of hidden storage and transforming furniture. Check out Donnie and Nicole’s modern and minimalist space below, and be sure to head to our Tiny Spaces page to see the rest of the series.

Instead of settling for the usual space-sucking studio floor plan (tiny studio, big closet), Donnie and Nicole designed their own loft. By tearing down the closet (gasp!), they were able to build their own personalized storage/living/dining/sleeping/work space. And not only does it look good, but it is uber functional and ready to accommodate everything from overnight guests to a dinner party.

Besides having their entertaining bases covered, Donnie and Nicole have hidden storage on lock. Donnie built Nicole a wall-length closet to keep all of her shoes (seriously, just look at that collection!), clothes, bits and baubles organized. The giant mirror doors serve a dual purpose for getting ready and opening up the tiny space.

The best part about Nicole and Donnie’s studio has to be all the transforming furniture built into and around their loft. They added a murphy bed so guests have a place to stay or just in case they need an afternoon nap zone. Instead of letting their low square footage hinder their table space, they use a store-away folding dining table for weeknight meals or afternoon work sessions. Who knew so many living spaces could fit into one tiny loft?

Nicole and Donnie even have their Netflix binge time figured out. Talk about a multi-purpose space all around!

Whether you’re looking to build your own personalized loft or just want to see how Donnie and Nicole managed to fit so much stuff and living areas into one tiny space, the video below will inspire you to gut your entire apartment and get to woodworking.

Moving in together is a great way to strengthen your relationship, but moving in together into a studio apartment? That might just be the ultimate challenge in organization and creativity. Fortunately, turning a studio apartment into a space that works for two is totally possible, especially with a few key tricks and small-space living hacks from the pros. Enter Donnie and Nicole. This rad couple showed us how they turned a 537-square-foot apartment in downtown San Francisco into the perfect home that satisfied both of their needs. Between the DIY closets, multipurpose furniture and hidden home theater, Donnie and Nicole’s home is just the inspo you need to embrace micro-living and transform your studio apartment into a space that works for you and your S.O. Check out all their genius small space hacks below, watch the video tour and then head over to our Tiny Spaces series page to see some other totally amazing tiny homes.

1. Think multipurpose. Nicole said that the key to coping in a small space is to buy things that you can use more than one way. You definitely won’t find a lot of unwanted clutter in this minimalist space, where everything has a place.

2. DIY is the best way. Like all couples who are moving in together for the first time, there was some adjusting that had to be done — mainly the addition of a closet for Nicole. Since they were working with an unusual space, Donnie and Nicole chose to DIY the whole thing. And hats off to Nicole for fitting everything she has into this closet. Capsule wardrobe, anyone?

3. Mirrors will double your square footage. See that wall of mirrors on the left? Yep, that’s Nicole’s closet, cleverly disguised. After building the closet, the couple ended up covering the whole thing in mirrors to help make the space feel bigger and brighter.

4. Be brave about your organization. In the search for a more open floor plan, the couple actually got rid of one of their closets (gasp!) and opened up the entryway. All you really need in a foyer is a place to kick off your shoes and store your sunglasses, right?

5. Don’t fixate on “normal” spaces. Sure, a dining room is nice to have when you’re entertaining, but do you use it every day? Instead of taking up valuable space with a massive table for the two of them, Nicole and Donnie opted for a fold-down table and a bench that doubles as storage shelves.

6. Raise the bed. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Ceiling height, that is. If adding a loft is an option for you, a raised bedroom can save you a ton of floor space and give you room underneath for a home office or guest area.

7. Make Murphy beds cool again. A guest room? In a studio apartment?? Yep, totally possible — just ask this couple. The addition of a loft created an extra space that works quadruple duty as a workspace, storage closet, dining room and guest room.

8. Think vertical. Standing desks are a brilliant solution for a small apartment. You can still have your workspace without filling up your entire apartment with desks and chairs — plus, it’s way better for your health.

9. Raise (and lower) the barstools. Instead of splurging on desk chairs, dining chairs and bar stools, Nicole and Donnie chose adjustable stools that can easily transition from the kitchen bar to the dining room table and the desk space. It’s nice to have options when you get tired of standing ;)

10. Lucite is your BFF. It’s easy for a small space to start feeling cluttered rather quickly. Nicole and Donnie solved this problem by using clear barstools that can be moved around the room and clear storage boxes that are in sync with the light and minimal aesthetic of the couple’s studio.

11. Don’t let the TV dictate the room arrangement. In this space, a good ol’ Netflix binge starts with the quick pull-down of a projector screen. There’s no bulky TV to dictate where the chairs are situated, and you get an enviable home theater with zero floor space sacrificed. Brilliant.

No one likes feeling cramped in the kitchen, especially when you’re elbow deep in cookie dough or working your magic on a dish of mermaid pasta. If you’re looking for a way to turn your tiny kitchen into a well-designed space that practically begs you to start cooking, all you need is a few clever decor tricks. During our Tiny Spaces series tour, Amy showed us how she styles her 400-square-foot San Francisco apartment, including some brilliant storage ideas in the kitchen. From using pretty pitchers for utensils to keeping a step-stool on hand at all times, Amy’s home is just the inspo you need to decorate your itsy bitsy kitchen. Check out all her genius and stylish small space hacks below, watch the video tour and then head over to our Tiny Spaces series page to see some other totally amazing tiny homes.

1. Make use of the space above your cabinets. Amy made full use of the space above her kitchen cabinets to store her cookbooks. As she pointed out, if you don’t use something every day, it doesn’t matter if it’s a little out of reach. Just make sure you keep a step stool on hand so you can grab them when you need them. Counters work too.

2. Don’t be afraid to add personality. Just because it’s a tiny kitchen doesn’t mean you can’t bring in some playful accessories. Minimalism is nice when it comes to small spaces, but it’s not the only answer. Just take note from Amy, who wasn’t afraid to mount a wood deer head front and center in her mini galley kitchen. Framed art above the cabinets is another genius idea to add color and style.

3. Keep your totes handy. The number one thing a tiny kitchen is missing is lots of storage space. Instead of stuffing your tote bag collection in a much-needed drawer, hang them under the cabinets where they can double as art. Plus, maybe having them in a high-visibility area will help you remember to take them with you more often.

4. Show off your mugs. Amy’s kitchen is a great example of how to use every square inch to your advantage. Here, she takes advantage of the empty space underneath a shelf to hang her adorable mug collection on a mounted coat rack.

5. Mount those wall shelves. Floating shelves = more surface area. A wall of open shelving is fun and functional and perfect for all types of spaces. This brilliant hack adds a mix of open lighting and varied structural elements so you can see exactly what you have at a glance.

6. Use pretty storage. Opt for colorful pitchers, quirky canisters and fun storage options to store all your utensils and kitchen hardware. If you’re renting, painting is usually not an option, so accessories are the next best way to incorporate your signature style into the space. Plus, being able to put your prettiest dishes on display doubles as decor.

7. Skip the curtains. Natural light is your best friend, especially if your kitchen is dark and narrow. Let in all the light possible and ditch the heavy curtains. If you’re worried about privacy, go for a simple blind instead.

8. Take your greenery to the next level. Plants are practically a must-have, but if you don’t have space for a giant fiddle leaf fig tree, it’s time to take your pots vertical. Hang mini planters around the windows and they’ll be more than happy to clean your air for you.

9. Hide your workspace. Amy’s favorite piece of furniture in her tiny apartment is her computer armoire. The doors open up completely so she can work in a well-lit space and hang plenty of inspo inside the cabinets via magnetic strips. But then when she’s done, all she has to do is close it up and the whole room looks more tidy and “put away.”

10. Think clear. Clear containers will up your organization game. Amy mentioned that she prefers storing things she uses every day in transparent containers so she can see what’s inside them. Instead of hunting around for the ever-elusive desk accessories, keep them mounted right on the wall for maximum efficiency.

One of the deep questions I asked myself on January 1 was, "How do you want to feel as a stay-at-home mom who's also a part of the WFH crew?" The first word that popped into my mind wasn't a full sentence; it was 'ease.'

I've spent the greater part of my life as a people pleaser who also has a Type A personality when inspired during work hours. There's nothing wrong with being ambitious, but I don't always know when to turn it off which leads to burnout. Does this sound like you?

If so, we're not doing this anymore bestie. This year we're changing the way we approach work so we're not on a first-name basis with stress 10 months out of the year. I've got tips from the following bada** ladies who know how imperative it is to not let work drain us:

  • Kayla Baum, CEO & Founder of Twello (a workplace wellness company!)
  • Corry Frazier and Melissa Pepin, Founders at The Business Reboot

Keep scrolling for 8 expert-approved tips for how to make work less stressful — & trust me, you need these.

Karin Kaufer

1. Actually Use Your Planner In 2025

We're not buying pretty planners just so they can collect dust on our desks or coffee tables anymore. Corry Frazier and Melissa Pepin want you to get serious because they feel "it starts with planning." They don't mean the kind you eventually flake on either.

"Effective planning is key to maintaining balance and reducing burnout. Whether you're mapping out tasks, meetings, or events, dedicated time for preparation ensures focus and reduces stress," they say. In other words, "the more intentional you are in planning, the more productive you'll be," according to them.

Ever since I've been blocking out my tasks by hour in planner, I've been able to get more done without feeling overwhelmed by splitting my time between writing and being in mommy mode. Frazier and Pepin suggest that you "set weekly planning sessions" that consist of "30-60 minutes each weekend to map out your upcoming week."

This eventually "reduces decision fatigue, fosters a sense of control, and helps you start Monday with clarity and purpose," they add. Yes, this is a sign that you'll be breaking up with the dreaded 'Sunday scaries' if you follow their advice. "You'll feel proactive and grounded rather than reacting to the week as it unfolds," they agree.

2. Embrace A "Fake Commute" When Working From Home

One of Kayla Baum's tips is to switch up your routine if you're a remote worker. Rolling out of the bed at the last minute before logging on for work sounds appealing until you realize you're uninspired by your days. But, what is a "fake commute?"

"It mimics the structure of a traditional commute to establish a boundary between work and personal life. This could mean taking a walk around the block, doing a 10-minute guided meditation, or even just changing clothes at the end of the day," Baum mentions.

Based on her experience, she's found that "it works because it provides a psychological buffer, helping to separate work and home life." She feels it's "crucial for positive mental health and boosting productivity at work (and at home)."

You can also create a separate work space that's not in your bedroom to get work done! That's helped me tremendously so I'm not sleeping and working in the same area.

Anna Nekrashevich

3. Focus On High-Impact Tasks

Similar to planning your work days as best as you can, Frazier and Pepin want you to "prioritize the tasks that align with your goals." To minimize distractions, they want you to ask yourself:

  • What is the most effective use of my time right now?
"For instance, if you're preparing for a big presentation at work, concentrate on immediate needs rather than getting sidetracked by unrelated projects. This approach helps you conserve energy for what truly matters," they suggest.

Greta Hoffman

4. Stop Making Daily Decisions Hard

Tasks like your morning routine or figuring out what you'll eat don't have to take up a chunk of your time anymore. "Use productivity hacks, such as pre-planning meals or laying out weekly outfits," suggest Frazier and Pepin. They feel that "small routines like this eliminate unnecessary choices" to "make mornings smoother."

According to them, it's "especially helpful for families juggling multiple schedules." I couldn't agree more because I've spent so many frazzled mornings trying to make decisions about what myself and my toddler would wear or eat instead of planning them. With the help of my fiancé, we've cut so much time in half by being prepared ahead of time instead of 'winging it' before work.

5. Understand What Your Boundaries Are And Set Them

Worried that you'll be considered 'mean' if you tell your manager or coworkers what your boundaries are at work? Depending on your environment, it's 100% understandable. However, you're human and there's no reason you should be over-performing to your detriment. Frazier and Pepin say, "Set boundaries and communicate clearly. Adopt Brené Brown's mantra: 'To be clear is to be kind.'"

They encourage you to not only "be upfront about your schedule to manage others' expectations," but it's also so you can "avoid over-commitment." Say it with me: I will not make false promises just to appease others. Why?

Frazier and Pepin say, "Don't be afraid to say no to side projects or anything that doesn't align with your goals."

6. Ignore Emails Sent After Your Work Hours

I've been guilty of sending an email after work to acknowledge that I saw something, but I never expect other people to feel obligated to respond until the next business day. On the flip side, I've felt pressured to answer something that feels timely and I've gone to sleep thinking about the sender's potential follow-up email.

"Just because a coworker chooses to work late at night doesn't mean you must answer. One helpful trick is to include your working days and hours in your signature, explaining that responses may be delayed outside of those times," Frazier and Pepin say. They even have a prompt you can use if you're not sure what to type:

  • "My working hours are [Your Working Hours, e.g., 9 AM - 4 PM ET]. Please note that these may differ from your local time zone. I appreciate your understanding and will respond to emails during my working hours."

I can't wait to start utilizing this...for research purposes only 👀.

Tima Miroshnichenko

7. Please, log off from work when it's time.

Unless you're scheduled to work late, take the time to log off from work and not think about it until the next day. Baum says, "Commit to fully logging off once the workday ends—no 'quick email replies' or sneaking in work over the weekend." I'm eyeing you Ms. "I just need to send a quick email" while you're on vacation or spending time with your significant other.

Baum says creating this separation works because "fully disconnecting allows your mind to reset and recharge" which ends up "making you more efficient, creative, and focused during actual work hours." According to her, you'll eventually "improve personal well-being" and "enhance long-term work performance."

As soon as my work day is over, I make a beeline for the shower so I can decompress. After that, I take my time with my skincare routine and keep my phone out of reach so I'm not tempted to look at anything work-related. I'm not always successful, but I've noticed a difference in my mood since making this shift.

Yan Krukau

8. Speak Up When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

And if you're 100% drained because you've been trying to tackle work tasks during and after hours, Frazier and Pepin want you to speak up. "If you're feeling overwhelmed with your workload, approach your manager with honesty and a focus on solutions," they suggest. Here's another prompt of theirs you can use:

  • "I've been noticing that my workload has extended beyond regular hours, and maintaining balance is becoming challenging. Could we discuss prioritizing tasks or adjusting expectations to ensure I can deliver quality work without compromising my well-being?"
What this does is "frame the conversation as collaborative and proactive, encouraging your manager to work with you on a resolution," Frazier and Pepin observe.
