11 Tricks for Sticking to Your Resolutions

With the start of a new year, we all want to improve ourselves. But if past experience has taught us anything, most of those resolutions will go out the window by February. After the sparkles have been vacuumed up and the glittery favors have been all passed out, use one (or all) of these tips to keep the momentum going throughout 2015. Whether you want to learn a new DIY skill or get your butt in shape, we’ve got you covered.

1. Make It Public: Blogger Grace Bonney offers her own tip for keeping resolutions: Make them public. It’s a little more difficult to back out on your promises when all 100 of your Instagram followers know what they are. (via Design Sponge)

2. Set One Specific Goal: Resolutions are different than life goals, so don’t make the mistake of confusing the two. If you make your resolution a single, specific goal, it’ll be less overwhelming and much easier to accomplish. For example, instead of vowing to lose weight, decide to lose five pounds by March. 4. Track Your Progress With Wunderlist: This app lets you set tasks and then makes your phone remind you regularly to accomplish these tasks. It’s pretty difficult to neglect your resolutions when your phone keeps dinging at you. (Free on iOS and Android)

5. Make Your Resolution a Habit: It’s actually much easier to form new habits than it is to accomplish one major goal. Our brains struggle to conjure up the amount of willpower it takes to stick to tough resolutions. Instead, if you focus on accomplishing one small thing a day, such as eating a banana, you’re well on your way to a healthier diet. (via Buffersocial)

6. Download an App: Getting in shape can be as simple as downloading an app. Okay, okay, then you actually have to use the app, but still. With apps like Spitfire, you don’t even have to get dressed and drive to the gym to get beach-body ready. (via Brit + Co)

7. The WOOP Method: This is where a good notebook might come in handy. If you can’t help but make your 2015 resolution a big one, then tackle it using the WOOP method. Outline your Wish, or what you really want, then consider the Outcome, or what ideally would happen. Then outline the Obstacles that will get in the way, and come up with a Plan to overcome them. 8. Buddy Up: The easiest way to stick to your resolutions? Make them with a friend. You’ll each hold yourself accountable for sticking to the plan, and no one wants to let down their bestie. (via Motivation Grid)

9. Adapt One Small Change: Even if resolutions aren’t your thing, adapting a small change can be effective in making 2015 even better than 2014. Standing more while working or even taking longer to consider what you’re posting on social media are simple ways to live more consciously and healthily. (via Entrepreneur)

10. Be Honest With Yourself: The most obvious trick for keeping your resolutions might also be the most difficult. When setting goals, you have to be honest with yourself, or else you’ll just end up disappointed. 11. Chris Guillebeau’s Yearly Review: Chris Guillebeau, author of $100 Startup and The Art of Noncomformity, knows a thing or two about accomplishing big goals. His secret? He conducts a yearly review, looking at what issues he has in each category of his life, from family and friends to career and spirituality, and then sets his goals in response to these problems. “To recharge and relax, I find solace in simple activities like walking to my office. I also have a weekly meditation session via Zoom with a friend who recently adopted a baby. It helps me find balance and unwind,” says Maria Londono, founder of Disrupt3rs, an app that helps creators learn the language of business in a fun and interactive way. “I also have a weekly ballroom salsa date with my husband, Francisco. These moments make a significant difference”

Here are five ways a mindfulness practice can help you build connection, boost your creativity, and grow your business:

Reduce stress. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, have shown to reduce stress and increase the feeling of relaxation. “I always prioritize my meditation practice,” says Maria. “Finding a balance is an ongoing effort, and though it’s not perfect, it’s definitely worth it.”

Make better decisions. When founders are more mindful, they become more attuned to their thoughts and emotions, helping them recognize when they’re reacting impulsively. Feeling clear-headed, calm, and ready to face the day can help you consider multiple perspectives, take the time to evaluate risks, and make strategic decisions for the long term vs. knee-jerk reactions that can cloud your judgment and affect the long-term success of your business.

Nurture your creativity. Your best ideas come from giving yourself the space to explore new ideas without the pressure to go, go, go all the time. Tap into your creativity by taking a midday walk, doing yoga, or just closing your eyes. “I nurture my creativity by hanging out with my daughter. We read, dance, and play together,” says Maria. Tapping into your innate creativity can lead to innovative solutions, product improvements, and fresh approaches to how you run your business.

Increase focus and productivity. A daily mindfulness practice can train your mind to stay focused on the task at hand rather than getting distracted by everything on your to-do list. This healthy focus time can lead to better productivity too, allowing you to accomplish more in less time and make more efficient use of your resources.

Improve communication and relationships. Being a great communicator is key to running a successful business. You may have employees, partners, or clients you need to communicate with clearly and calmly on a daily basis. “I have a deep appreciation for my co-founder,” says Maria. “We keep each other balanced and don’t mind talking shop during our downtime.”

Maria was one of 10 Selfmade members to enter the Selfmade pitch competition in her cohort. “Pitching our business through Selfmade has taught us the importance of introducing our target client and bringing her to life,” says Maria. “This helps people connect with her pain points and understand the potential solutions we offer.”

Oh, Canada follows the life of legendary (albeit fictional) filmmaker Leonard Fife. This story probably approaches Leo's career the way we think about Steven Spielberg's. AKA, he's very important. Leonard decides to tell his life story before he runs out of time. And even though he's got an impressive resumé, he also has to decide if he wants his Vietnam draft dodge and sticky relationships to become public knowledge.

"Leonard sits for an extended interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), relating candid stories about his younger self (Jacob Elordi) in the tumultuous 1960s and beyond," the synopsis says, adding that "at Leonard’s insistence, his wife and indispensable artistic partner, Emma (Uma Thurman), bears witness to it all."

Uma Thurman has been vocal about how excited she is to be a part of the project and told Deadline the movie feels like a "reverie" and has a "lyrical, sort of loosely knit, poetic" quality about it.

"The cinematic hand of Paul, of course, carried the day, as far as bringing this sort of illusionary dream together into something that you walk away from with the strong impression of a story," she says. "Just the presence of a master like Paul Schrader on a set of any size, is as distinct as, I don’t know, a warm wind. It’s like the wind that hits you when you get off a plane in the tropics. There’s only one thing of its ilk, and he’s kind of a master like that. You could really be anywhere; you can’t miss it."

That sounds like my kind of movie.

Director Paul Schrader revealed he fell in love with Jacob's performance the moment he saw him — which was before he took the world by storm in Priscilla. “I saw his performance on Zoom and, if this was 40 years ago, this is the guy I would have cast for American Gigolo,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
