3 Types Of Lighting For The Perfect Ambiance

types of lighting for each room a little lamp

All over TikTok, people are adding small lamps in places they need a little extra light like the kitchen counter, bathroom vanity, and bedrooms. Overhead lighting is out and small lamps are back.

“We never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever turn on the big light.”

It’s a popular audio on TikTok, and a rule for life. The big light is, of course, the blinding, singular source of overhead light in any given room. Some are attached to a fan, others aren’t. They’re bright, far-reaching, and usually overkill.

Design Makers + Breakers: Lights

Many designers will say that harsh overhead lighting is a common faux pas. It creates unnecessary shadows and can feel sterile and aggressive.

This TikTok audio is usually accompanied by stunning shots of romantically-lit homes, low-light lamps, decorative lights, and dreamy interiors. The trend points to an important lesson in interior design: lighting matters.

All over TikTok, people are adding small lamps in places they need a little extra light like the kitchen counter, bathroom vanity, and bedrooms. So is overhead lighting out and small lamps back?

First, let’s discuss the different types of lighting each room needs and why they’re important.

Types of Lighting Each Room Needs

Image via Francesca Tosolini/Unsplash

There are three main types of lighting that each room needs: ambient, accent, and task.

Ambient

Ambient is usually overhead, like that annoying one on your fan, but could also be recessed lighting, chandeliers, or sconces. While these kinds of lights are needed for general purpose, the trick is to make them dimmable. Having control over just how bright your ambience lights are, and having the ability to adjust based on the time of day makes all the difference.

Accent

Accent lighting is also important for creating cozy spaces within a room, for example, defining the living room from the dining room. Think little, table lamps, and picture, track, and up lights. They are used to highlight a specific piece of art or accompany a sitting area.

Task

Lastly, task lighting is just what it sounds like: lights you use when doing something specific. For example, the lights above your bathroom sink, pendants over the kitchen island, or a standing lamp next to your favorite reading chair. These are usually necessary aside from your design skills.

The key is to have a mixture of these three light sources. They each have their own role and add to the ambiance of a space. Most homes inherently have ambient lighting. When you move in, they’re there. And most people add task lighting for essential light where you need it. But accent lighting is often overlooked.

The Trendy Little Lamp

Which brings us back to the trendy “little lamp.” Those small, vintage-style lamps on kitchen counters, bedside tables, or playrooms are the accent lighting addition all of our homes have been craving. It rounds out the room and completes the dynamic design. No wonder we love them.

And perhaps after three years of living in our homes non-stop, we’ve learned the power of romanticizing one’s life. Turning in for the night and “closing the kitchen” by the light of a small lamp is infinitely more appealing than the horror of full light on the situation. The low lighting calls for more intimacy and a slower pace.

Why You Need One

Image via Urban Outfitters

Creating rituals in your home is what will make you feel centered and connected to it. The simple act of going around to turn lights on or off can signal something more than just the need for light: the starting or ending of a work day, a beloved nighttime tradition, or the peace of knowing sleep is coming soon. Like making yourself a special drink to unwind or playing your favorite comfort TV show, keeping just the little lamps on can be a similar treat after a long day.

Plus, these lamps are so affordable. The small size and basic structure makes them unremarkable and easy to find. I’ve thrifted a few for under $15 and found some favorites on Amazon for under $50. If you’re looking for a classic pleated lampshade, this one is a gem.

Look around your home and ask yourself, what type of lighting do I have in here? Odds are, you’re missing one.

The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew," creator, executive producer, writer, and director Craig Mazin said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing the story of THE LAST OF US with season three!”

Neil Druckmann, creator, executive producer, writer, and director, added,“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans' enthusiastic and overwhelming support. Nina Dobrev sent the internet into a tailspin (including myself) when she took part in a new tricksy mom trend...cradling a newborn baby. This hilarious TikTok trend starts off with users holding an adorable infant with the text "I miss how my body looked before you." In addition to starting conversations about postpartum bodies (because every body is a good body!!) the trend insinuates the TikTok user is the baby's mother before providing a hilarious twist. So when Nina made her own video, we all lost it!

Keep reading to watch Nina Dobrev's baby TikTok video & read all the comments.

Nina Dobrev left all her fans "screaming" with her newest video.

@nina

ok baby, relax on the facts

♬ original sound - Gypsy

Nina Dobrev's TikTok features the Vampire Diaries actress in leggings and a gray cardigan with white hearts holding a sweet little newborn in a onesie covered in rainbows. Just like the rest of the videos on the trend, she says "I miss how my body looked before you," before cutting to a close-up on the baby's face with the words "Girl you're my aunt. Go to the gym." Not to mention the fact the baby is giving her some serious side eye. I can't help but giggle!

Naturally, the video comments were filled with people who fell for the trick, saying everything from "I THOUGHT I MISSED A CHAPTER" to "I first thought you had a baby and didn't tell us" and "GIRL I STARTED SCREAMING."

And one fan even added, "She would be an amazing mother."

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White are currently engaged (even if they're not wedding planning at the moment), and can't wait to see what life brings in the future.

"They've definitely discussed making things official. They've talked about getting married, having kids, the whole nine yards," an insider told Us Weekly in 2023, adding that the couple is “so in love and can’t imagine not spending the rest of their lives together. What they have is the real deal."

I'm swooning! Should Shaun and Nina decide to have kids (and decide to share them with the world) I'll be more than excited to support them.

It'll take you about five minutes after meeting me to learn I'm from North Carolina. I simply can't stop talking about it! The cities are vibrant, the beaches are gorgeous, and the mountains are beautiful (quick plug for info on donating to Hurricane Helene relief). And since I'm from the Outer Banks, I have been locked in on Netflix's teen drama show of the same name. You can imagine my heartbreak when the streamer announced season 5 would be the final season (and when season 4 killed off my favorite character), but never fear my treasure hunting, adventure seeking friends. Netflix is bringing us a brand new drama called The Waterfront that has enough drama and intrigue to fill the Outer Banks void in your life.

Here's everything you need to know about The Waterfront, streaming on Netflix June 19, 2025.

In addition to Ella, viewers can look forward to seeing stars such as Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, Moisés Arias, Zach Cherry, and Leslie Uggams.

The series is revered for its witty banter and sharp dialogue, making it a favorite among fans in the '80s. However, Moonlighting is still just as enjoyable today and available for streaming on Prime Video.

4. The Expanse

The Expanse, which debuted in 2015 and has six seasons, offers an interesting take on the future of humanity, where human conflict and political intrigue are still an issue, even in the solar system.

It's set in a world where Earth, Mars, and the asteroid belt are on the brink of war, and centers on a crew of survivors from a mining ship, James Holden, Naomi Nagata, Amos Burton, and Alex Kamal, who uncover a big conspiracy. The crew is played by Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, and Cas Anvar, respectively.

USA

6. Monk

This show offers a unique twist on the detective genre by blending comedy with mystery in a wonderful way. Monk follows Adrian Monk, played by Tony Shalhoub, who is a brilliant but neurotic detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

His phobias and quirks often lead to complications and plenty of hijinks at work. Nonetheless, his unrivaled detective skills still make Adrian one of the best in the business. Monk ran for a total of eight seasons and paved the way for Mr Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie, which came out in 2023.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan brings the iconic character to the TV screen for the first time. 9. Fleabag

Fleabag is the adaptation of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's one-woman stage show. As the unnamed protagonist, known only as Fleabag, she plays a dry-witted and emotionally scarred woman who shields herself from pain with sharp humor and unfiltered commentary.

Viewers follow along as she navigates the chaos of life, love, and loss in London. Fleabag is obviously driven by Phoebe Waller-Bridge's outstanding performance, but it also has great supporting actors, including Andrew Scott, Sian Clifford, Brett Gelman, Olivia Colman, Jenny Rainsford, and Bill Patterson.

Liane Hentscher/Prime Video
