We all want dewy skin and shiny hair. But when it comes to how to achieve them, the options can feel endless. And on top of all the products you put on your body, there are the remedies you put in your body too. But how do you know what actually works? We talked to experts to find out what vitamins and nutrients to make sure to get enough for healthy skin and hair. Scroll on for the scoop.

Vitamins & Nutrients Good for Skin & Hair

For Your Skin: You want to load up on antioxidants, which play a key role in defending against the free radicals that cause aging by helping skin cells effectively detoxify on a daily basis. This then tightens the skin, reduces wrinkles, and repairs age spots, according to Alexandra Catalano, holistic nutritionist and creator of popular lifestyle brand Eat Cute.

Vitamins like A, E, and C are rich in antioxidants and “are essential when it comes to clear, healthy-looking skin," says Taryn Forrelli, a naturopathic doctor and head of product development at vitamin brand OLLY. Vitamin C is crucial for glowing skin as it is not only an antioxidant but also helps create collagen.

Collagen (which seems to be having a moment) is great for your skin because “[it] helps form elastin and other compounds within the skin that are responsible for maintaining skin's youthful appearance and healthy glow. The more collagen you have in your body, the less likely you are to have one of the most visible signs of aging — wrinkles," Catalano points out. And don't forget omega-3 and fatty acids, which help your skin get that coveted glowy look.

For Your Hair: A nutrient that's beneficial for both your skin and hair is zinc. It “helps speed up hair follicle recovery on damaged hair and is also essential for the growth of new healthy tissue for your skin," explains Forrelli.

You may have heard that biotin helps hair grow, and experts concur that it can contribute to lustrous locks. “Biotin supports keratin formation, a protein found in hair, skin, and nails," says Erin Stokes, a naturopathic doctor and medical director at MegaFood vitamins.

According to Forrelli,“Keratin provides a rich source of cysteine which can be used by the body to create hair fibers that resist stress and breakage. The combination of biotin and solubilized keratin ensures your follicles have both the building blocks and the energy needed to grow healthy hair."

And omega-3 doesn't just help your skin glow — it also supports the grown of longer, stronger, thicker hair, Catalano tells us.

How to Get 'Em: Food or Supplements?

Now that we know the nutrients that are good for our hair and skin, what's the best way to absorb them? Some nutrients like biotin are best absorbed in supplement form, while others like antioxidants can be easily ingested through your diet. The choice to consume your nutrients in supplement or food form is really up to you based on what fits into your lifestyle.

To get antioxidants for your skin via your diet, Catalano suggests cabbage, which is rich in vitamin A. For a big helping of vitamin C, she loves camu camu, large berries from a shrub in the Amazon that Catalano promises “have more vitamin C than any food on the planet." And for a good dose of vitamin E, munch on some almonds — just one ounce has 7.4 milligrams of vitamin E, which is about a third of the recommended daily amount.

For your collagen intake, Catalano advises looking for a supplement with collagen or adding some collagen powder to your morning smoothie. Vital Proteins makes a good collagen powder; if you're vegan, Moon Juice makes a vegan one.

Get omega-3 fatty acids in your diet by eating salmon, sardines, and chia seeds for glowy skin, or take fish oil supplements, which are an excellent source of omega-3 fats that help thicken and hydrate hair, states Stokes. “It also helps combat inflammation that can be a culprit of hair loss," Catalano explains. So “load up on flax seeds which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, zinc, and B vitamins, all of which foster growth of stronger, longer, and thicker hair," recommends Catalano.

As for zinc, which benefits both skin and hair, you can get it from oysters, which have more zinc per serving than any other food, along with red meat, poultry, dairy, and seafood like crab and lobster. If you're vegan, try beans, nuts, whole grains, or fortified breakfast cereals, which also are good sources of zinc.

Lastly, hyaluronic acid can help with skin hydration. But simply applying hyaluronic acid to the skin doesn't get it into the skin's layers where it's needed to retain moisture. So Forrelli suggests orally consuming 120mg of hyaluronic acid a day so “it can be absorbed through the digestive tract and work to boost skin moisture and improve skin smoothness for a youthful glow from within." You can take hyaluronic acid in supplement form or you can also find it in OLLY's Vibrant Skin Gummies ($14).

Don't Forget the Basics

While all of these vitamins and nutrients can work wonders, there are some simple things you can do on a daily basis to keep your skin in tip-top shape. For instance, drinking enough water keeps your skin looking fresh. “Proper hydration is important for skin health and overall whole body health. Dehydrated skin is dry, flaky, and more prone to emphasizing wrinkles," says Stokes.

Also, keep in mind that sleep deprivation is really bad for your skin. According to Forrelli it “triggers the body's stress response, which in turn increases skin inflammation. Proper sleep is essential for keeping the stress response in check while promoting skin rejuvenation. Aim for seven to nine hours per night," she recommends.

As much as we used to look forward to taking a sick day in grade school, there's nothing fun about having cold or flu-like symptoms as an adult. Sure, you may get to miss work for a few days, but the body aches, fever, and sore throat combination are awful. It's even worse if your period decides to join the party!

There's so many different OTC (over-the-counter) cold medicines and supplements out there...which leads us to wonder: does Emergen-C actually work, or not? Since we're unsure, we turned to Board-certified family medicine physicians Dr. Laura Purdy, MD, MBA and Dr. Jennie Stanford, M.D., FAAFP, DipABOM to help answer our burning questions!

What's the difference between cold and allergy symptoms?

Having seasonal allergies can be confusing when they coincide with cold season. Between kids being back in school and the weather changing, the fall/winter seasons seem to bring on sneezing, coughing, and more. But, how can you tell when you're merely dealing with allergies or something else?

"Colds are viral infections. Symptoms include a sore throat, cough and feeling tired," says Dr. Purdy. Dr. Stanford further explains that viral infections have "traditionally been Rhinovirus species, but it may also be Adenovirus species and others." Colds can also be accompanied by a fever in some cases.

On the other hand, Dr. Purdy and Dr. Stanford both agree allergies are specifically caused by allergens or irritants. "Common Symptoms include sneezing and itchy eyes," says Dr. Purdy. According to the CDC, around one quarter of adults deal with seasonal allergies (raises both hands), so it's not weird if you get confused about when it's time to switch from Claritin to Dayquil.

How should people relieve cold symptoms before heading to the pharmacy?

Before you head to CVS at the first sign of sneezing and a sore throat, there are a few things Dr. Stanford suggests you do. "Optimizing our immune systems by focusing on overall health and wellbeing can help reduce the risk of infections, including the common cold. This includes eating a healthy diet, being physically active, getting enough sleep, and keeping stress in check," she says.

Unfortunately, Gallupreports that 57% of people feel they're not getting the proper amount of sleep they need. But, this doesn't mean you should ignore your lack of rest just because others are struggling too. Take it from someone whose insomnia impacted their mental health and a nasty bout of the Flu followed by Covid-19 two years ago! "Properly treating other health conditions can also help prevent acute illnesses, like the common cold," says Dr. Stanford.

However, it's not unusual to get a cold because Dr. Stanford says they're the "result of germs spread from contact with others." Taking precautions just helps your immune system work the eliminate the viral infection faster.

Do elderberry and Vitamin C fight off colds?

This is where things get a little tricky. Though elderberry and Vitamin C have been hailed as supplements that combat colds, not everyone agrees on their effectiveness. Dr. Stanford says, "While the evidence for Vitamin C in treating colds is mixed, sufficient research suggests that taking vitamin C supplementation can shorten the duration and reduce the severity of cold symptoms." But if you're thinking about relying on Vitamin C supplements, Dr. Stanford is less likely to encourage you to take them because they haven't been proven "to be effective in preventing common cold symptoms."

She also doesn't think you should take elderberry as if that'll also fight off a viral infection. "Elderberry is not effective in preventing colds, and evidence is insufficient to suggest that it is effective in treating the common cold," she explains.

Do you recommend relying on Emergen-C to help combat cold symptoms?

So, what's the verdict on taking Emergen-C once it's confirmed you have a viral cold? The brand has several products that range from gummies to drink mixes, all aimed at supporting your immune system — but does that mean they're safe to take? According to Dr. Purdy, they are! "Emergen-C contains Vitamin C which is great for a good and healthy immune system and recovery. It also contains other good for you ingredients that help with your immune system like vitamin E and Zinc."

However, it's valid to want to know if there's a difference between Zicam and Emergen-C. According to Dr. Stanford, there is! "Similar to Vitamin C, evidence suggests that zinc may be effective in reducing the duration and severity of cold symptoms, but it is less likely to be effective in preventing the common cold," she explains. Plainly put, think of the two like this:

  • Zicam = Zinc
  • Emergen-C = Vitamin C

She even says, "Studies suggest taking both zinc and vitamin C could be beneficial!"

Can certain teas help soothe sore throats associated with colds?

Drinking warm tea can help alleviate cold symptoms, though you shouldn't think they're your only defense against viral infections. In conjunction with cold medicines, "throat coat teas really help soothe inflammation and help manage symptoms," says Dr. Purdy. The reason for this is that most "throat support products are indicated to ameliorate sore throat and similar symptoms, often by numbing agents, temperature, and other factors," Dr. Stanford explains. In short, don't be afraid to use tea as a form of hydration while you're sick!

Dr. Purdy says other things you can use to help alleviate your symptoms are a humidifier, nasal spray, and drops. Take it a step further by taking a "steam shower" to "provide some much needed relief."

Westwick and Jackson initially met at Silverstone race track through a mutual friend. The three of them chatted during the racing event and Westwick casually (and so cutely) asked Jackson on a date after the fact.

Westwick asked if Jackson and her poodle, Herbert, were up to meet for coffee with him and his Frenchie, Humphrey. Okay, puppy love!

Westwick and Jackson were spotted in public more frequently as their relationship started to grow, adventurously attending red carpets, events, and vacations hand-in-hand.

The duo shared some wholesome pics of one another on social media, too, and began commenting on each other’s posts more often to put their feelings on display.

The pair made things officially official in July 2022 and made their first debut as a couple at the Red Sea International Film Festival the following winter, according to India Today.

Commenting on the duo’s ability to keep calm and cool in the wake of fame, Westwick told Lifestyle Asia that “I embrace my public life and it’s always great to meet people and take pictures as long as people are polite, which most of the time they are. I also like to, you know, be away at home, walk my dogs, be with my family and enjoy my privacy. Balance is always good.”

One of the biggest happenings between Westwick and Jackson in 2023 was their couples’ trip to Mumbai in India, where Jackson had briefly lived in 2012 to 2015 to work on a few films.

Jackson reportedly took Westwick on a tour of the city, stopping at famous landmarks like the Taj Mahal and enjoying local fares from nearby restaurants.

The two of them were featured in acover story for Lifestyle Asia in 2023, where they dished more on their relationship and respective careers in acting.

Westwick told Lifestyle Asia that his love shared with Jackson is similar to what his parents had.

“There was something beautiful. They could always count on each other and had the utmost respect for one other and I think that is the most important thing,” he said.

That brings us to 2024! Ed Westwick and Amy Jackson got engaged during a ski trip to Switzerland mid-January.

Westwick asked Jackson to marry him on top of the Peak Walk by Tissot, a popular scenic hanging mountain bridge.

Jackson was happily surprised, as the picture of the exact moment shows her with her hands over her mouth. We love!

This isn't the first time the pair has broken the internet, and one of my favorite moments was when they performed "Señorita" at the AMAs in 2019. The chemistry! The vocals! The audience reactions!

And in November of 2021, the pair made a joint statement (which was posted to their individual Instagram stories) announcing their breakup.

"Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the statement said. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward. Camila and Shawn.”

And there were rumors in 2023 that they had romantically reconnected. “They’ve practically moved in with each other,” an US Weekly sourcesaid last summer. “They each have their own places, but they’re spending every day they can together and traveling together.”

The pair has been spotted together more and more frequently, at Coachella, then at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, and even in the middle of New York City. The Us Weekly source also mentions that “it feels like a new relationship.”

However, according to a new source, the pair has broken up again — this time for good. “Shawn and Camila have a lot of history and they tested the waters again after coming back into each other’s lives," the source told The Sun. "In reality, both of them know they aren’t right for each other romantically and now they just want to move on.”

Despite the will-they-won't-they of it all, it seems like Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello will always be in each other's lives!
