You’re getting married! Congrats! We hate to be a Debbie Downer, but the pressure is on. From worrying about your bridesmaids’ ‘dos to pinning tons of bridal hair inspiration, you’re trying to cover all your bridal bases. We know it’s super important that you look your best, so here are a few hair-don’ts to avoid on the big day. Keep away from these 11 common mistakes, and you’re sure to look nothing but sleek and timeless on your big day.
1. Conditioning Your Hair: If you have a stylist doing your hair for your wedding, she’ll probably tell you not to wash your hair the day of, since slightly dirty hair holds the style better. But really, washing your hair isn’t that big of a deal, as long as you don’t use conditioner — not the day of, and not the night before! (via Brit + Co)
2. Not Speaking Up!: While you’re getting your hair done, make sure to speak up if the bobby pins are stabbing you or if you’re not crazy about what’s happening on your head. It’s better to let your stylist know while she’s doing it, so she can fix it easily. You won’t hurt her feelings, and you definitely won’t regret it! (via How to Hair Girl)
3. Thinking Updos Are Mandatory: If updos just aren’t your thing, you don’t have to wear one on your wedding day. You probably won’t feel like yourself, and you might not like your photos afterwards. There are so many beautiful flowing hair possibilities. Stay true to yourself. (via Makeup Wearables)
4. Accessory Overloading: We love bridal accessories. But sometimes, what works in Vogue doesn’t work in real life. In this case, less is more, and understated is beyond classy. Even Carrie Bradshaw regretted the peacock on her head on her (disastrous) wedding day. (via Bridal Musings)
5. Wearing Old School Braids: Braids are a perfect way to add a little personality to the classic updo, but they can easily make you look like you’re ready for grade-school picture day rather than your picturesque wedding. Update your ‘do with a light, freeform halo braid, rather than weighing your head down with a milkmaid style. (via Irrelephant)
6. Making Extreme Hair Changes: Don’t get an extreme haircut in the weeks leading up to your wedding. If you want to try out a new look, like a heavy fringe or blunt bangs, do it months before the big day to give you time to get accustomed to the look. Don’t forget; you want to look like yourself. (via Jftasse)
7. Overdoing Tendrils: We’ve all seen those updos with the over-curled, piecey tendrils. To keep your updo from looking dated, let your hair fall naturally. Letting a few pieces fall here and there can keep your look from seeming over-styled, and keep you feeling comfortable. (via Twist Me Pretty)
8. Underestimating Your Own Skills: … or those of your friends. You don’t have to stretch your budget and spend hundreds of dollars on a professional hairstylist. There are plenty of adorable DIY bridal updos that are not only easy to do, but classic as well. (via Brit + Co)
9. Ignoring Your Hair’s Health: In the weeks leading up to your wedding day, keep an eye on your hair’s health. Try your best to avoid irons and dryers, and try out a DIY hair mask or two. Dried out, frizzy hair can ruin even the best of intentions. (via Blog CDN)
10. Over Spraying: We’re not gonna lie. On your wedding day, hairspray is a godsend. Hours of posing and dancing will test the limits of your ‘do, but just make sure not to overspray. You don’t want your head to look like a helmet, so keep the spritzes light. (via Brit + Co)
11. Going for Tight Braids: Like we said earlier, braids are all the bridal rage (and there’s no question why). But make sure to avoid braids that are super tight. If you can feel the braids pulling on your scalp, you’re guaranteed to have a monster headache before the end of the night (can you say, “wedding mood killer?”). This is where ideal bobby pin placement comes into play. (via Hairstyles Idea)
