6 Things to Consider Before Ditching Your Gym Membership

The beginning of the year is notorious for a spike in gym memberships, but the stretch from fall to winter sees the pendulum swing the opposite direction. For those of us who live in warmer climates, fall is the time of year when exercising outdoors finally becomes realistic again. And in any climate, end-of-the-year financial pressures like the upcoming holidays can make us quick to cancel our contracts. Plus, reports increasingly say gym memberships are one more thing millennials are guilty of “killing,” with rising interest in more boutique approaches to fitness, like a SoulCycle or Barry’s Bootcamp, and a preference for streaming services that allow you to work out at home. So if you’re contemplating leaving the land of treadmills and ellipticals, you’re not alone.

When deciding whether to ditch your gym, there are numerous factors to take into account. You might be reaping benefits you don’t realize from a gym membership — or you might actually be paying for far more than you’re getting. Here are six things to consider before you tear up your contract and hit play on YouTube fitness videos.

1. How much does it cost? The most obvious consideration for most of us when it comes to gym membership is the financial bottom line. Perhaps you’ve decided you’d rather put that monthly chunk of change ($58/month for the average US membership) back in your pocket — especially if you’re not going very often. Unfortunately, this is sometimes easier said than done. Many gym contracts lock you in so that quitting actually costs more than sticking out the duration of your membership. You may be better off financially if you ride out your commitment until it ends.

2. How far away is it? For those with plenty of time on their hands, a long, leisurely drive to the gym may not pose a problem. But when time is precious, the length of your commute can be a deciding factor in whether to stay or go. Even a 15-minute drive becomes hard to justify when you’re spending as much time in the car as you are on your half-hour workout. Then again, if your gym is a social hub where you hang with friends, or home to your favorite yoga instructor on the planet, getting there and back may be a totally worthwhile use of time.

3. Does it align with your values? Just like individuals, gyms have values. You can feel them in the way you’re treated by staff, in the supplements and products being sold on-site, and even in the promotional materials they send you in the mail. If you had to give your gym a mission statement, what would it be — and would it match your own goals for health and wellness? Underlying messages of “weight loss at all costs” or “you’re just a number here” might not jive with what you’re trying to accomplish.

4. How does it make you feel? The gym can be a surprisingly emotional place. Ideally, even though you might not always feel like going (because who always wants to work out?), your time there should leave you feeling positive and empowered. Sometimes, however, the vibe at the gym can be less than uplifting. If objectifying looks from certain bench-press dudes are making you uncomfortable or if the sea of perfect bodies is messing with your self-talk, it may be time to bail. Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

5. Does it keep you social? One often overlooked benefit of a gym is the social support it can provide. Not only is it a place to meet new people or see friends who are fellow members (important in-person interactions in these digital times we live in), studies show that exercising with others boosts our endurance and helps us work out harder. (Be honest: Aren’t you more likely to stick out an hour of kickboxing in a class than at home in front of a screen?) Additional research reveals that group exercise improves quality of life and reduces stress significantly more than working out by yourself. Might be reason enough to stay committed.

6. Can your workouts work without it? Just like working out with others helps you stay motivated, knowing you’ve invested time and money in a gym membership may keep you accountable to exercise regularly. Can you hang on to your workout dedication without it? Consider your own personality and past experiences with going gym-free. You may even want to give it a trial run, taking a few weeks’ break to see if you’re able to work out consistently at home.

In addition, take stock of which resources and equipment you use at the gym and how well you could replicate them at home. If you do decide to throw in the (sweat) towel, one option is to take a portion of the money you’ll save and invest in something that’ll promote working out, like a good set of free weights or a pair of quality running shoes.

Hot peppers like jalapeños, serranos, habaneros, and more contain capsaicin, which lends them their spicy heat. Though capsaicin can totally enhance the flavors of certain dishes, it can also irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, causing pains, cramps, upset bowel movements, acid reflux, or heartburn.

2. Curry spices

Many common curry spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder tend to stimulate stomach acid production. While they can aid digestion when eaten in small amounts, they can be harmful if you're simply sensitive to them or eat ‘em in large doses. If you have a sensitive stomach, you could experience indigestion, bloating, or a burning sensation from certain spices.

3. Milk

Ah, yes – the ol’ lactose intolerance! Milk obviously contains lactose, which is commonly hard to digest. If you’re lactose intolerant or have a sensitive stomach, consuming milk can lead to gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea as undigested lactose ferments in the gut.

4. Cheese

Just like milk, cheese contains lactose – though typically in smaller amounts. Nonetheless, it can trigger plenty of tummy problems. Aged cheese in particular can also be high in fat, slowing digestion.

5. Coffee

Coffee is not only naturally acidic on its own, but it also encourages the stomach to produce more acid. This can irritate the stomach lining and contribute to acid reflux, heartburn, or gastritis (AKA inflammation of the stomach lining). On the contrary, it can also speed up digestion, leading to cramping or less-than-ideal bowel movements.

6. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another naturally acidic food and can trigger acid reflux or heartburn easily. These symptoms are especially prevalent in people with sensitive stomachs or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The acidity can also irritate the esophagus and cause a burning sensation or indigestion after eating.

The retreat included cooking and mixology classes with Ketel One Vodka and Tanqueray Gin, meditation sessions, and a moving panel discussion (hosted by Queer Eye’s Tan France) with the ensemble after they, too, watched the finale for the first time.

During the cast’s Q&A, we got the tea on how Aimee Lou Wood truly felt about her character’s death, plus Patrick Schwarzenegger’s initial reaction to the explosive ending.

The White Lotus Cast's Reactions to Chelsea and Rick’s Death

As audience members know, Chelsea and Rick were the characters that met a gruesome end.

Wood said of her character’s death, “For about two weeks before we shot it, I felt super weird. It was this odd, ominous thing that was just hanging over us.” Her character is a casualty of an intense gunfight ignited by her boyfriend Rick (played by Walton Goggins), who attempted to save her by carrying her to safety. “And then it was the hottest day ever. Walton had to carry me so many times, and it was so hard.

In that time, Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) achieves his vindication by shooting Rick in the back. “Chelsea doesn’t know what’s going to happen to her,” Wood said, adding that the scene “looked exactly how it felt, which was really strange.” There’s a final, dark shot of Chelsea dead, faced down in the pond and Rick faced up, mimicking a Yin and Yang symbol.

Meanwhile, Thapthimthong felt like his character’s actions were “justified.”

Thapthimthong said, “At first, I felt like, ‘I don’t want to shoot him in the back.’ I wish he would turn around and have a little gunfight with me so we can have a little action scene. But we had a discussion with Mike, and I remember he said, ‘Trust me,’ it will be justified. I feel like it really was.” Gaitok then goes on to receive the promotion he’s always wanted, so you can say things worked out for him.

Patrick Schwarzenegger, who arguably conveyed the biggest character arc in Saxon Ratliff, built a spiritual connection with Chelsea that translated IRL.

Schwarzenegger told France, “I knew something happened to Chelsea, but I didn’t know the extent of everything. It’s this really surreal weird feeling right now of just spending so much time with all of these cast members and then watching someone die. I don’t know how to describe it. You feel like something really happened.” We did too, Patrick, we did too.

As Aimee Lou Wood said on the panel, “There’s a lot in that episode that made me f---ing sob.” And we couldn’t think of a more perfect way to describe the series ending.

I'll be the first to say I've had to set strict limits for myself because it's been too easy to stay glued to gossip sites and what's happening in the world. While it's always great to be informed, there is a such thing as information overload that can affect us mentally and emotionally.

Make an effort to find activities to occupy your time sans scrolling endlessly on Instagram, TikTok, or other news platforms.

2. It Allows You To Be Honest With Yourself If You're An Overthinker

Have you been allowing overthinking to make you feel stressed? If so, you should try writing down or repeating a few phrases to help you calm down. They're such a big help if you have anxiety because they remind you that you can be present in the moment instead of existing solely in your head.

This should be in all caps, but I don't want you to think I'm yelling at you. It's just, I know what it's like to be hyper-independent while embodying the traits of a "strong woman." But, there's some things you can't #GirlBoss or #LuckyGirlSyndrome your way out, and it can be devastating if you don't like asking for help maneuvering a tough event.

I'm still processing an emergency situation I was in after what was supposed to be a routine doctor's visit, so I've been out of my element whenever I lean on my family and friends for emotional support. I usually like to deal with sad or scary situations by myself, but not all things are meant to be shouldered by ourselves.

What I can tell you is that asking for help and receiving it makes life a little more peaceful because there's no extra burden of hurting while trying to portray a role society claims it loves.

When twin brothers Smoke and Stack return home for a new beginning, they're initially met with welcome arms. But as daylight turns to dusk and gives way to nightfall, unspeakable horrors expose themselves to the townspeople. Evil not only consumes everything in its path, it also changes Smoke and Stack in ways they could've never prepared for.

According to PEOPLE, the actress shared more of her thoughts in her newsletter Beau Society March 28. She wrote, "...This role is far removed from what I've done, but that's part of what drew me to it! I feel like I'm stepping into my own more and more as I get older, and this role mirrors that."

She also shared that it didn't take much for her to be a part of Sinners. "The minute I heard Ryan Coogler, I was in. Then I read his script and was like, 'Holy s---, this feels like a massive undertaking.' The story is so complex and layered," calling herself "fortunate and honored to even be remotely considered."
