Here's How To Spend A Perfect 3-Day Weekend In Sonoma This Fall, According To A Local

what to do in sonoma

My home near downtown Sonoma has become the girls weekend destination for friends who moved around the Bay Area and beyond, and that was totally intentional. I moved to Sonoma, CA from San Francisco before there was a big exodus from the city to wine country in 2020. I figured if I was going to move away from my favorite city and people, I wanted to make sure to move to a place I'd actually want to live and they'd actually want to visit!

Sonoma Tourism Board

There's so much to love about Sonoma — which is just a 1.5 hour drive from SFO — from the small town charm around the plaza to the hiking trails at the Sonoma Overlook to the friendly walk-in wineries that rival the more posh ones in nearby Napa. With acclaimed restaurants like Valley Bar and Bottle, Cafe La Haye, El Molino Central, we have amazing food options, making the city-to-country swap much less of a sacrifice. The weather is also fantastic for summer-lovers through October, when the six-month dry season ends.

MacArthur Hotel

Wineries host everything from live music to Broadway theatre to yoga and meditation too. OK, enough with my hometown boast. Here's how to spend a perfect girls weekend in Sonoma this harvest season and beyond.

Day 1: Spa Day

The Lodge at Sonoma

The Lodge at Sonoma is one of my favorite spa experiences in the town of Sonoma, with a relaxing pool and sauna area, plus cozy private reading pods that you can lounge in before you get your treatment. Stay and/or book your spa treatment here to start your girls weekend (you can book a yoga class beforehand too). You can have lunch poolside or toss on a sundress and hop over to nearby MacArthur Hotel (another favorite) for lunch at their darling outdoor restaurant Layla.

Layla

After your leisurely lunch at Layla, stroll around the Sonoma Plaza for shopping: Jak Z for home decor lovers; The Loop, KJB, Wildeflower, and Perlé for fall fashion; and Chateau Sonoma for your Francophile fix. After picking up your next fall read at Readers' Books, grab a scoop or two at Sweet Scoops, homemade ice cream sourced with local ingredients like lemons, peaches, berries, and even wine!

The Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa

The Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa is another must on my visitor list — cozy outdoor fire pits are perfect for grabbing a bite and a cocktail in the evening. You can stay overnight here too, and they have a great spa with mineral pools, but you can definitely take advantage of their amenities and Santé restaurant (a good brunch spot) without an overnight stay.

Day 2: Wine Tasting

James Escobar for Jordan Winery

Harvest season is a beautiful time to visit Sonoma with rolling hills of lush vineyards that start to change color toward late fall. I suggest a day trip to Healdsburg for your second day in Sonoma County. Drive up scenic Highway 12 toward Santa Rosa and visit the French-inspired chateau at Jordan Winery, a scenic Alexander Valley estate with oak and olive trees, a 2-acre garden (it's the largest winery pollinator sanctuary in the country), lakes, and the perfect grapevine backdrop for your IG stories.

Jordan Winery

Book Jordan's Paris on the Terrace Harvest Lunch or Pizza Cooking Class & Luncheon in October, or dress up for a magical Halloween tasting experience with fall-inspired hors d’oeuvres made by Michelin star-rated chef Jesse Mallgren.

Reeves Winery

Another favorite wine tasting experience is taking a drive up to Reeves Winery in Dry Creek Valley. Sip small production wines in their open air veranda, surrounded by craggy oak trees, grapevines, and a Great Pyrenees named Guy.

Emma K Creative For Little Saint

Healdsburg has its own town square with boutiques, galleries, a bookstore, and gourmet restaurants like the plant-based Little Saint, Valette (the Day Boat Scallops en Croute are a must table experience!), and Barndiva.

Day 3: Bike Ride

Sonoma Valley Bike Tours

Back in Sonoma, grab bikes at your hotel or home stay, or rent them, and ride along the Sonoma city bike path that cuts straight through the town, along Montini Open Space Preserve, the Train Museum, and country roads lined with vineyards and berry bushes. Ride to the Sunflower Caffe at the downtown plaza (it has a darling garden in the back) or grab fresh paninis at Sonoma's Best, which also has a cute garden in the back with a few cottage stays.

Ketut Subiyanto

The bike path leads to Bartholomew Estate Winery, where you can grab a picnic table and a bottle of wine and enjoy your al fresco lunch from Sonoma's Best. Next door is also California's first winery, Buena Vista Winery, built in 1857. There are a bunch of local wineries that are also worth driving to, including Scribe Winery (members only tho), Hamel, and Ram's Gate. Or you can pop by tasting rooms downtown like Pangloss Cellars, Three Sticks, and Roche.

Valley Bar and Bottle

Wrap your long weekend with a dinner at Valley Bar and Bottle and a cocktail at the speakeasy-style Beacon Bar next door, both on the plaza, and come back and visit us soon!

A recent Gallup pollshowed that fewer than half of Americans are “very satisfied” with their life choices. Where you live, it turns out, has a lot to do with your overall life satisfaction: the community you have, the quality of life you experience, and your physical and emotional health and safety. Personal finance website, WalletHub released its report on the Happiest Cities in America in 2024 to find the places where people experience the highest life satisfaction and the results are surprising.

“Meaningful relationships and social connections are perhaps the most important ingredients for a happy life, according to an 85-year-long study recently published by Harvard researchers Waldinger and Schulz (2022)," says Buffie Longmire-Avital, Ph.D., a professor at Elon University. “High-quality relationships stand out as important predictors of individuals' happiness. Having rewarding interactions with people whom you value and who value you may provide the support, comfort, laughter, and intimacy that elevate individuals' happiness.”

Jess Loiterton

WalletHub first compared the 50 states across 30 key indicators of happiness, with a date set that ranged from the depression rate and the share of adults feeling productive to income growth and the unemployment rate. Hawaii has the lowest share of adult depression, which is 2.3 times lower than in Tennessee, the state with the highest. New Jersey has the fewest suicides (per 100,000 residents), which is 3.7 times fewer than in Montana, the state with the most. Utah has the highest volunteer rate, which is 2.6 times higher than in Florida, the state where the rate is the lowest. Volunteerism is another way people find purpose and joy in life.

William Bout

In order to determine the happiest cities in America, WalletHub compared 182 of the largest cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities — across three key areas:

  • Emotional & Physical Well-Being
  • Income & Employment
  • Community & Environment

Priscilla Du Preez

“When individuals have a high sense of community...well-being increases, and stress, anxiety, and depression decrease. Neighborhoods with high walkability scores that are also safe and near things like parks or trails help sustain our physical and mental health, which are key factors in determining happiness,” adds Dr. Longmire-Avital.

Here are the top 20 happiest U.S. cities, many of which score high on the nature and family-friendly aspect. Ready for a new start or planning local travel this season? Check them out!

Fremont, CA

Shutterstock

According to the WalletHub report, Fremont, CA, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, is the happiest city in America, and one reason why is income: the city has the highest share of households with an income above $75,000, at nearly 80 percent. Studies have shown that increasing your income also increases your happiness up to $75,000 (but not beyond). With a rich history tied to the California Gold Rush, Fremont has evolved into a hub for the tech industry, including Tesla's Fremont Factory. The city offers excellent schools, a wide range of cultural experiences, and outdoor spaces like Mission Peak. People in Fremont also have a high rate of life satisfaction, a low depression rate, and a long lifespan on average. It also has the lowest share of adults who report having mentally unhealthy days, so people in the city seem to be doing the self care needed to keep themselves happy.

Overland Park, KS

Visit Overland Park

Overland Park, KS, has earned its spot as the second-happiest city in the U.S., thanks to several key factors that contribute to its residents' well-being. With the lowest poverty rate in the nation at just 4.2 percent and an impressively low unemployment rate of 3 percent, it's clear that financial stability plays a huge role in their happiness. The city also boasts one of the lowest food insecurity rates, meaning more families have what they need to thrive. Residents of Overland Park also enjoy a lot of leisure time each week, which many spend participating in sports — one of the top ways to stay emotionally and physically healthy. Overland Park boasts a rich cultural scene, including the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and a variety of dining and shopping options. People in Overland Park tend to get more sleep than those in most other cities, a crucial factor for maintaining a positive mindset.

San Jose, CA

Josh Sorenson

Not far from Fremont is the third-happiest city: San Jose, CA, in the heart of Silicon Valley and home to tech giants like Adobe and eBay. San Jose has a diverse food scene, art galleries, and beautiful outdoor spaces, including nearby hiking trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which you can enjoy year-round. The city has the longest average life expectancy in the country. It also has one of the lowest separation and divorce rates and scores the best on the health and wellness company Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index, which measures how much residents like where they live, feel safe and have pride in their community. It also scores extremely well on Sharecare’s Life-Satisfaction Index, which measures people’s health risks based on various physical, financial and social factors.

Madison, WI

Josh Sorenson

Nestled between lakes Mendota and Monona, Madison offers stunning waterfront views, beautiful parks, and a ton of Midwestern charm. The University of Wisconsin-Madison brings in some of its youthful energy while the city boasts a strong local food, music, and art scene. It's also a great place to live, work, and explore.

Irvine, CA

Shutterstock

Irvine, California in sunny Orange County is known for its family-friendly vibe, excellent schools, and thriving economy. Home to the University of California, Irvine, the city offers a mix of culture and nature with great parks, bike paths, nearby beaches and the Irvine Spectrum Center, a popular shopping and entertainment destination.

Honolulu, HI

Kinø

This tropical paradise and state capital, located on the island of Oahu, is famous for its stunning beaches, including the iconic Waikiki Beach, and its rich cultural heritage. Honolulu offers world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment alongside scenic landscapes like Diamond Head and lush rainforests. Home to landmarks like Iolani Palace and the Pearl Harbor Memorial, Honolulu is known for its warm aloha spirit.

San Francisco, CA

Juan Salamanca

Hop on a cable car ride in San Francisco, the #7 happiest city on the list. It's year-round mild climate and stunning hilltop views remind us just how stunning this city is. From the Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field, and Presidio Tunnel Tops to bustling Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights, Valencia Street in the Mission, and Hayes St. in Hayes Valley, there's tons to explore from a world-class food scene to indie shopping to museums and coastal views.

Pearl City, HI

Pearl City is a charming suburban community located on the island of Oahu, just west of Honolulu. The nearby Pearl Harbor National Memorial and surrounding waters with scenic views hold both historical significance and recreational activities like boating. The city itself has a peaceful close-knit community and is family-friendly with excellent schools, parks, and shopping centers.

Columbia, MD

Shutterstock

Located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Columbia is known for its diverse neighborhoods, excellent schools, and many green spaces with parks, lakes, and over 90 miles of walking and biking trails. Columbia’s town center features shopping, dining, and entertainment options, including the Merriweather Post Pavilion, a renowned concert venue. With a strong sense of community, access to major cities, and a focus on sustainability, Columbia is not surprisingly in the top 10 happiest cities in the U.S.

Scottsdale, AZ

Probing and asking the right questions will get you the necessary answers. It is a fantastic time to begin release work and cord-cutting if you have barricading thoughts or unwelcome situations.

On October 17, the Full Moon in Aries calls in a significant moment, particularly in the realm of relationships. If you're in a romantic connection, be prepared for potential shifts in leadership dynamics. An aspect of yourself or your partnership may need to undergo review, leading to growth and healing opportunities.

Challenge leads to growth and infinite possibilities.

Patience and receptivity are crucial to navigating this intense lunation. Also, Venus enters Sagittarius on this day, igniting an air of wandering and the desire to be untethered. As you remain invested in growing with your partner or in life, you will experience a deeper connection.

Love will be an adventure.

As we conclude October, Scorpio season begins on October 22, edging in a misty vibe. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway or a week-long vacation with your friends and family, you'll want to consider making your way to Stowe, Vermont — especially in the fall. Last month, I took a trip out there for the first time, and I absolutely fell in love with Stowe. From the beautiful nature to the friendly people and outdoor activities, I wondered why I've never been before! Oh, and did I mention it's only a 45 minute flight from New York City? In less than an hour, you can be transported from the hustle and bustle of city life to beautiful greenery and the great outdoors.

While Stowe is definitely beautiful year-round, I'm partial to the autumnal, small town charm you'll get as the leaves start to change and the air gets chilly. Keep on reading to find a list of hotels, attractions, restaurants, and transportation options you'll want to consider for your upcoming trip to Stowe. Trust me, you'll want to visit ASAP when the leaves change colors — your Insta feed will thank you.

Outbound Stowe

Outbound Stowe

Another popular hotel is Outbound Stowe, located a few miles from Mt. Mansfield and offering access to Stowe's Recreation Path. This property offers on-site dining and has pools and fire pits to sit around on those brisk autumn evenings.

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's Factory

Ice cream lovers will rejoice when they visit the Ben & Jerry's factory. Technically, the factory is in Waterbury, but...it's only a 20 minute drive from Stowe — close enough to have it on this list! The factory is home to exclusive merchandise, a scoop shop, photo opportunities, and a guided tour for guests. Tickets for the guided tour are available online and in person, however, it's highly recommended to purchase ahead of time since they tend to sell out quickly. The tour provides a glimpse into the history of the company with a short video, followed by a look at the production line, and a tasting opportunity.

Stowe.com

Stowe Gondola SkyRide

Unless you're afraid of heights, then you'll want to take a trip on this gondola that provides views of Stowe from the top of Mt. Mansfield. On top of the mountain, you'll find a gift shop and a few restaurants including The Cliff House and The Waffle. It's open daily from June 15 to October 20 and is $40 per adult and $26 per child. Tickets are available online and in-person, but it does sell out quickly.

Other attractions you'll want to check out while in Stowe include the Noyes House Museum and Green Mountain Distillers for tastings and unique opportunities you won't find anywhere else.

Shopping in Stowe

The Country Store

The Country Store

Located on Main Street, The Country Store has kitchenware, gadgets, home decor, bedding, and other trinkets that you can pick up while in the green mountain state. You'll find brands including Geometry, Jellycat, Matouk, Pom Pom London, and Casafina at this store located two doors down from the Stowe Community Church.

Instagram/@theflyrodshop

The Fly Rod Shop

The outdoorsy folks will want to make a stop to The Fly Rod Shop which is home to everything and anything fishing related. Aside from gear and tools, they also offer guided tours and trips including ice fishing, fall boat tours, fly tying classes, and even free casting clinics.

Transportation in Stowe

Peter James Eisenhaure

While downtown Stowe is walkable, you'll need a car to get just about anywhere and everywhere else. Uber and Lyft are very unreliable in the area so you'll want to consider transportation ahead of time. Go Stowe has some options for reliable car services and travel companies in the area.

The Vermont Explorer

I highly recommend Gary from The Vermont Explorer. He offers rides to and from Stowe's most popular tourist attractions, airports, and anywhere else you could possibly want to visit. He also does tours of some of the local breweries, a fall foliage tour, and a mountain tour. He's extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and offers fair prices for her his services.

Additional Taxi and Car Services

Other travel services include Patriot Transport, Sub Zero Taxi, GOGO Charters, Neil’s Wheels. I can't speak directly on these services since I haven't used them, but they are recommended by Stowe's tourism board.

Dining in Stowe

Spruce Peak

Tipsy Trout

The Tipsy Trout offers guests with a menu filled with fresh seafood and an extensive wine list. Not only is the food sustainably sourced, but the restaurant has breathtaking views of Mt. Mansfield so you can eat in a picturesque environment. Some popular menu items include crab cake sliders, seared scallops, lobster agnolotti, and salmon poke.

Harrison's Restaurant

Harrison's Restaurant

Open Wednesday to Saturday, Harrison's Restaurant is a family-owned restaurant that has local and seasonal offerings for customers. As soon as you walk in, you'll get a very woodsy, home grown feel — exactly what I'm looking for when I need a cozy meal on a fall evening. The menu has an assortment of fish, meat, pastas, soups, and salads plus kid-friendly options, too.

Yes, Stowe does have a downtown area. It's pretty walkable and has a few well-preserved historic buildings and many entertainment, shopping, and dining offerings for visitors.

Is Stowe a walkable town?

Sadia Afreen

Downtown Stowe is walkable, however, to get to different places you'll either need to have a rental car or utilize a car service. Be sure to plan ahead the distance between attractions you're looking to visit so you can time everything accordingly.

How many days do you need in Stowe?

Rafael Rodrigues

The amount of days you need to spend in Stowe depends on what you're trying to see and do. For example, if you want to check out several hiking trails and ski, then you may want to stay closer to five days. On the other hand, if you want to peruse the downtown area, look at the autumn foliage, and get a general feel for the town, then two or three days is definitely sufficient.

Spoilers for Emily in Paris season 4 part 2 below.

Bonjour! Or should I say, Ciao! After getting reacquainted with all our favorite Parisians in part 1, Emily in Paris season 4 part 2 was exactly the kind of European romp TV has been missing. And this time, we traded the lights of the Eiffel Tower for the Colosseum, Audrey Hepburn's Funny Face for Roman Holiday, and baguettes for lots and lots of pasta. Even Emily herself couldn't pass up the opportunity to compare her newest adventure to The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

Part 2 was full of everything we love about this series: amazing fashion, beautiful European landscapes, and very hot, lovable guys. (Thankfully, Marcello is everything Paolo from The Lizzie McGuire Movie ISN'T). While we're waiting to press play on season 5 — and even more of Emily's Italian adventure — here's everything that happened in Emily in Paris season 4 part 2.

Emily and Gabriel Break Up After A Skiing Adventure Gone Wrong...

Netflix

When Emily's flight home to Chicago for Christmas gets grounded, she joins Gabriel, Camille, and Camille's family for their holiday. Despite their less-than-enthusiastic response to her ugly Christmas sweater tradition, Emily joins Camille's family for an afternoon of skiing. But things get tense when Camille wants to race Gabriel, Gabriel wants Camille (who he still thinks is pregnant) to take it easy, and Emily needs Gabriel's help to make it down the mountain.

But when Camille and Gabriel take off, leaving Emily stranded, things get even messier. Until she's rescued by Marcello, but more on that later. When Emily finally reunites with Gabrielle, she expresses frustration at always feeling second to Camille, even if she understands Camille and the baby will always be a part of Gabriel's life. Despite their very-short stint as official boyfriend and girlfriend, Emily and Gabrielle call it off and Emily returns to Paris.

...But Immediately Hits It Off With A New Guy Named Marcello

Netflix

After the skiing incident in the first episode of Emily in Paris season 4 part 2, Marcello and Emily reconnect at a polo match and instantly hit it off. He's kind, he's funny, and he's very handsome. Emily ends up going to Rome on his invitation, and their time really shows how beautiful their life together would be — and not just because the slow-mo shots of their food gave me insane cravings.

One reason I think Marcello could be Emily's endgame is the fact that he inspires her to get rid of a lot of habits she's never given up for anyone else. He encourages her to put down her phone and to see things with her eyes instead. And for the first time in the entire series, Emily tells Sylvie she won't work because she's spending time with Marcello and actually living in the present.

While the back and forth with Gabriel frustrates me just a little bit, I love this man Marcello so much that I can't even be mad. I NEED to know if they're going to end up together.

Sylvie's Stepdaughter Geneviève Joins Agence Grateau

Netflix

When Sylvie's stepdaughter Geneviève fails to land a job at Vogue Paris, Sylvie hesitantly welcomes her to Agence Grateau. And at first glance, it appears Geneviève is everything Emily is not. She undergoes Sylvie's Parisian makeover and speaks fluent French, but she also has quite a few schemes up her sleeve.

It doesn't take long for her to develop a very obvious crush on Gabriel — and to hijack one of Emily's pitches to include him, even though she knows Emily and Gabriel have just broken up. Plus, after witnessing Gabriel express how frustrated he feels with his and Emily's communication issues, she translates for Emily, adding a lie at the end that Gabriel doesn't want to see Emily anymore.

Geneviève moves into Emily and Gabriel's building (into Camille's newly vacant apartment, no less), and she invites Gabriel to her housewarming party. Geneviève tells Gabriel he's finally nabbed a Michelin star, and after kissing him multiple times, he finally tells her things between them will remain platonic.

Mindy's Eurovision Adventure Ends Before It Can Begin (For The Better, TBH)

Netflix

After a season of tension and disagreements, Mindy and Nicolas have a difficult conversation about Eurovision, and her maybe-more-than-friendship with Benoît, but all Nicolas can focus on is how it affects his campaign for CEO of JVMA. And when he asks her to drop out of the "silly song contest," explaining any of his entertainment connections can help her achieve her dreams, they break up.

But all is not lost because when Mindy joins Emily for an Italian girls' trip, complete with gelato of course, she gets a new wave of inspiration to write her own song. She performs the ballad in the streets of Rome, goes TikTok viral, and gets invited back to Chinese Popstar to perform the song AND be a judge. Go Mindy!!

Say Hello to Emily in Rome

Netflix

The season culminates in the last episode of Emily in Paris season 4 part 2 when Sylvie arrives in Italy to convince Emily to help sign Marcello's family business to Agence Grateau. Unfortunately, Emily and Marcello's new relationship gets rocky when he worries scoring the account was the only reason she came to Italy (until Marcello FINALLY learns Emily really didn't want anything to do with the job).

Sylvie appoints Emily the head of the new Rome office and, just like she did on her first day in Paris, Emily throws open her shutters, takes in her view of the city, and explores the neighborhood (this time on a vespa with Marcello). But unbeknownst to her, when Gabriel learns she's moving, he takes off, asking Mindy just where in Rome he can find her. We might be saying au revoir to Paris for now, but there are plenty of new beginnings to say Buongiorno to.

What was your favorite moment of Emily in Paris season 4 part 2? I loved the last 10 minutes of the finale, and genuinely started squealing when Gracie Abrams' "Close To You" started playing!
