12 Places To Travel In August To Beat The Extreme Heat And Crowds

best places to travel in august

Booked some vacation time but still undecided on where to travel in August? As the final full month of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to plan a last-minute summer getaway. While it might be too late for a major trip, several European destinations offer late-summer charm without the extreme heat and summer crowds. Consider visiting Iceland, northern Europe (such as Poland, Austria, Slovakia, and Switzerland), or the Scandinavian countries for a exciting but chill adventure. Personally, I avoid destinations with temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so cold-weather destinations that are heating up are appealing this time of year. For a local escape, here are 12 fantastic places in the U.S. to explore right now – get ‘em while they’re hot! (Or hot enough;)

San Diego, CA

Griffin Wooldridge

San Diego is known for its 72 and sunny year-round weather. In August, it heats up to a toasty 77 degrees on average, making it the perfect getaway to escape the extreme heat across the U.S. This stunningly pretty city is known for its gorgeous Pacific Ocean beaches and coastal hikes. Marvel at the pelicans and sea lions at the stunning La Jolla Cove, wander through botanical paradise of Balboa Park and visit the flamingos at the famed San Diego Zoo. Dine and drink in the Gaslamp District, explore the historic and beautiful Hotel del Coronado, and hike the scenic trails of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve for the best coastal getaway on the west.

Denver + Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

Alyssa teboda

Experience the perfect blend of city life and mountain adventure with this getaway. Start your trip by flying into Denver, where you can visit museums, catch outdoor summer concerts, and taste amazing food from every corner of the globe. Make Denver your basecamp for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, just a short two-hour drive away. Plan to hike along the Bear Lake Road corridor for incredibly scenic views, hiking trails suitable for all levels, and wildlife sightings. Catch a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and if you love stargazing, mark your calendar for Rocky Mountain National Park's Astronomy Festival on August 2 and 3.

Seattle, WA

Lin Zhu

Avoid peak rainy season and enjoy Seattle in August when it shines with warm, sunny weather, making it perfect for getting outside and exploring all it has to offer. Start your trip with a visit to the iconic Space Needle for panoramic views of the city and beyond. Stroll through Pike Place Market, where you can sample fresh seafood, local produce, and shop local crafts to bring home. Don't miss the original Starbucks for a true Seattle coffee experience. For a dose of culture, explore the Museum of Pop Culture and the Seattle Art Museum, which hosts fascinating exhibits year-round. Seattle's natural beauty is at its peak in August. Take a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island for scenic views of Puget Sound, or visit Discovery Park for hiking trails and beaches. August is also festival season in Seattle. Look out for Seafair the first week.

Portland + Willamette Valley, OR

Caleb Jones

Portland, Oregon, Seattle’s rainy cousin in the south, also perks up weather-wise in August. I love this city for its amazing food (Pine State Biscuits, Pasture PDX, LangBaan to name a few), art and music scene, and indie shops. Wander through the Portland Saturday Market, where local artisans show off their makes, and enjoy a meal from one of the city's delicious food trucks. Explore Washington Park, home to the stunning International Rose Test Garden and the tranquil Japanese Garden. Don’t miss Powell’s City of Books, the largest independent bookstore in the world, perfect for book lovers. Willamette Valley, Oregon’s wine country, is a short drive south. Spend a day touring vineyards and tasting some of the finest Pinot Noir in the country. Many wineries offer breathtaking views, picnic areas, and guided tours. There are also waterfall hikes, biking trails, river activities, and hot air balloon rides!

Vancouver + Victoria, B.C

Robbie Down

Grab your passport and head north to Vancouver and Victoria, B.C. for a faraway feeling without going too far. Start your adventure in Vancouver with a visit to Stanley Park, where you can cycle the seawall, explore lush trails, and visit the Vancouver Aquarium. For breathtaking views, head to the top of the Vancouver Lookoutor take a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain. Stroll through Granville Island, a vibrant hub of artisan shops, markets, and eateries. Cap off your Vancouver visit with a walk through the trendy Gastown district, known for its historic charm and dining scene. A scenic ferry ride brings you to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. Victoria is famed for its British colonial architecture and beautiful gardens. Visit the iconic Butchart Gardens, a stunning 55-acre floral display, take a leisurely stroll through Beacon Hill Park, and get your fancy on with an afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, ME

Vasilis Karkalas

What I love about these beach towns in Maine is how chill they are even in peak season. No crazy crowds like their southern New England neighbors. Ogunquit Beach is perfect for lounging and swimming (and summer reading). Explore Perkins Cove, a quaint fishing village with charming shops, galleries, and seafood restaurants like the Lobster Shack. For a touch of culture, visit the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, which showcases a diverse collection of American art on three acres of sculpture gardens right along the ocean. Catch a Broadway-caliber show at the Ogunquit Playhouse, a historic summer theater, before you take a short drive north to Kennebunkport. This quintessential New England town is full of historic charm. Stroll through Dock Square, the heart of Kennebunkport, with its unique boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants like Alisson's for local seafood or The Boathouse for amazing water views. Spend a day at Goose Rocks Beach, a serene spot perfect for relaxing and exploring tide pools. For a scenic adventure, take a boat tour along the Kennebunk River or out to see the iconic Goat Island Lighthouse.

White Mountain National Forest, NH

Shutterstock

August weather is perfect for exploring NH's White Mountain National Forest, where you can hike some of the area’s renowned trails, such as the Franconia Ridge Loop or the Mount Washington Summit, the highest peak in the Northeast. For a more relaxed experience, take a scenic drive along the Kancamagus Highway, known for its stunning vistas and numerous pull-offs where you can take photos and enjoy a picnic. Visit the Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park, where you can walk through the narrow gorge, past waterfalls, and covered bridges. The Conway Scenic Railroad offers a charming way to see the landscape, with vintage train rides through the mountains (if you're traveling with kids, this is a must!). Explore the quaint towns nestled in the White Mountains too, like North Conway and Lincoln, where you’ll find charming shops, local restaurants, and cozy stays like the Scandi-inspired Villa Hygge Scandinavian Boutique Hotel & Spa.

Bozeman + Yellowstone National Park, MT

Vitória Lago

Fly into Bozeman, Montana, and stay a while before you explore one of America's most famous (and first) national parks. In Bozeman, explore the lively downtown area, filled with boutique shops, art galleries, and excellent dining options, like Blackbird for wood-fired pizzas and Brigade for creative cocktails and contemporary Montana cuisine (cue meat lovers). For outdoor adventure, head to the Gallatin River for kayaking or a relaxing float, and the nearby hiking trails of Hyalite Canyon, a nature lover's dream with stunning views and serene landscapes. After, chill with a customized spa treatment at the Solace at the Big Sky Resort, or go for a soak in the Bozeman Hot Springs. A short 1.5 hour drive south takes you to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park, where you'll find geysers, hot springs, and amazing wildlife like bison, elk, and possibly bears in the Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Visit iconic sites like Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Yellowstone Grand Canyon and take advantage of the warm weather by hiking, camping, and picnicking throughout the park.

Los Angeles, CA

Roberto Nickson

LA is one of my favorite destinations – not just for its star sightings, although there are plenty of them, but because it offers so much that you can have a completely different trip every time. Average August temperatures fall around a dry, not humid, 85 degrees, which is mild compared to the rest of the country. The east side offers the Griffith Observatory for stunning views of the city and the night sky (also the setting for La La Land and Rebel Without A Cause). You can hike up to the Hollywood sign here too, one of my favorite things to do in LA. Catch an outdoor flick at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (not as creepy as it sounds and a unique LA experience). Stroll and shop trendy boutiques and eateries in the Silver Lakeneighborhood too. The Getty Center, The Broad, and LACMA are must-visits for art lovers as is the Getty Villa in Malibu. Check out our guide to Malibu for all the hot spots. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at movie and TV production for film fans. Beach lovers will want to head to Santa Monica, shop Abbot Kinney Boulevard and walk along the Venice Beach Canals. Grab a bite at the Ggiata deli!

Upper Peninsula, MI

Travel Marquette

August is a perfect time to visit this gorgeous part of the country. Start your trip with a visit to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where you can explore stunning cliffs, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Kayaking along the shoreline offers an up-close view of the colorful rock formations, while hiking trails like Chapel Loop provide breathtaking vistas and waterfalls. Head to Mackinac Island for a step back in time. Accessible by ferry, this car-free island features charming Victorian architecture, horse-drawn carriages, and the historic Fort Mackinac. Rent a bike to ride around the island, taking in the scenic views of Lake Huron. Tahquamenon Falls State Park boasts one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, perfect for a day of hiking and picnicking. Finish your trip with a visit to Marquette, a vibrant college town with a lively arts scene, excellent dining, and beautiful beaches along Lake Superior. Don't miss Presque Isle Park, a natural oasis with scenic trails and rocky outcrops perfect for sunset views.

Burlington, VT + Montreal, Quebec

Ed Vázquez

Grab your passport for an east coast international journey. Start your travels in Burlington, VT, a picturesque city on the shores of Lake Champlain. In August, the weather is perfect for outdoor activities. Stroll along the scenic Burlington Greenway, which offers stunning views of the lake and the Adirondack Mountains. Head to the Church Street Marketplace, a bustling pedestrian mall filled with unique shops and local eateries. Don't miss the nearby Shelburne Farms, where you can tour a working farm and sample delicious Vermont cheese. Just a two-hour drive from Burlington, Montreal is like stepping foot in a mini Paris, especially around the cobblestone streets and historic buildings of Old Montreal. Visit the stunning Notre-Dame Basilica, known for its intricate Gothic Revival architecture. For a panoramic view of the city, hike up Mont Royal, and explore the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood for its colorful murals, trendy boutiques, and lively cafes.

Chicago, IL

Chait Goli

Chicago has one of the best city vibes that blends Midwestern friendliness with big-city sophistication. Take in scenic river walks and hop on an architecture river cruise to get a lay of the land. Shop the Magnificent Mile, Wicker Park’s trendy boutiques and Fulton Market. Art lovers will fawn over The Art Institute of Chicago, and Second City comedy shows make for a fun night out. Try Beatrix for brunch, Cindy’s Rooftop for stunning views of beautiful Millennium Park and Lake Michigan, and a cooking class at the Chopping Block. Don’t miss the deep dish Chicago pizza at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria and inventive cocktails at The Aviary before you wrap up your week!

A recent Gallup pollshowed that fewer than half of Americans are “very satisfied” with their life choices. Where you live, it turns out, has a lot to do with your overall life satisfaction: the community you have, the quality of life you experience, and your physical and emotional health and safety. Personal finance website, WalletHub released its report on the Happiest Cities in America in 2024 to find the places where people experience the highest life satisfaction and the results are surprising.

“Meaningful relationships and social connections are perhaps the most important ingredients for a happy life, according to an 85-year-long study recently published by Harvard researchers Waldinger and Schulz (2022)," says Buffie Longmire-Avital, Ph.D., a professor at Elon University. “High-quality relationships stand out as important predictors of individuals' happiness. Having rewarding interactions with people whom you value and who value you may provide the support, comfort, laughter, and intimacy that elevate individuals' happiness.”

Jess Loiterton

WalletHub first compared the 50 states across 30 key indicators of happiness, with a date set that ranged from the depression rate and the share of adults feeling productive to income growth and the unemployment rate. Hawaii has the lowest share of adult depression, which is 2.3 times lower than in Tennessee, the state with the highest. New Jersey has the fewest suicides (per 100,000 residents), which is 3.7 times fewer than in Montana, the state with the most. Utah has the highest volunteer rate, which is 2.6 times higher than in Florida, the state where the rate is the lowest. Volunteerism is another way people find purpose and joy in life.

William Bout

In order to determine the happiest cities in America, WalletHub compared 182 of the largest cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities — across three key areas:

  • Emotional & Physical Well-Being
  • Income & Employment
  • Community & Environment

Priscilla Du Preez

“When individuals have a high sense of community...well-being increases, and stress, anxiety, and depression decrease. Neighborhoods with high walkability scores that are also safe and near things like parks or trails help sustain our physical and mental health, which are key factors in determining happiness,” adds Dr. Longmire-Avital.

Here are the top 20 happiest U.S. cities, many of which score high on the nature and family-friendly aspect. Ready for a new start or planning local travel this season? Check them out!

Fremont, CA

Shutterstock

According to the WalletHub report, Fremont, CA, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, is the happiest city in America, and one reason why is income: the city has the highest share of households with an income above $75,000, at nearly 80 percent. Studies have shown that increasing your income also increases your happiness up to $75,000 (but not beyond). With a rich history tied to the California Gold Rush, Fremont has evolved into a hub for the tech industry, including Tesla's Fremont Factory. The city offers excellent schools, a wide range of cultural experiences, and outdoor spaces like Mission Peak. People in Fremont also have a high rate of life satisfaction, a low depression rate, and a long lifespan on average. It also has the lowest share of adults who report having mentally unhealthy days, so people in the city seem to be doing the self care needed to keep themselves happy.

Overland Park, KS

Visit Overland Park

Overland Park, KS, has earned its spot as the second-happiest city in the U.S., thanks to several key factors that contribute to its residents' well-being. With the lowest poverty rate in the nation at just 4.2 percent and an impressively low unemployment rate of 3 percent, it's clear that financial stability plays a huge role in their happiness. The city also boasts one of the lowest food insecurity rates, meaning more families have what they need to thrive. Residents of Overland Park also enjoy a lot of leisure time each week, which many spend participating in sports — one of the top ways to stay emotionally and physically healthy. Overland Park boasts a rich cultural scene, including the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and a variety of dining and shopping options. People in Overland Park tend to get more sleep than those in most other cities, a crucial factor for maintaining a positive mindset.

San Jose, CA

Josh Sorenson

Not far from Fremont is the third-happiest city: San Jose, CA, in the heart of Silicon Valley and home to tech giants like Adobe and eBay. San Jose has a diverse food scene, art galleries, and beautiful outdoor spaces, including nearby hiking trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which you can enjoy year-round. The city has the longest average life expectancy in the country. It also has one of the lowest separation and divorce rates and scores the best on the health and wellness company Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index, which measures how much residents like where they live, feel safe and have pride in their community. It also scores extremely well on Sharecare’s Life-Satisfaction Index, which measures people’s health risks based on various physical, financial and social factors.

Madison, WI

Josh Sorenson

Nestled between lakes Mendota and Monona, Madison offers stunning waterfront views, beautiful parks, and a ton of Midwestern charm. The University of Wisconsin-Madison brings in some of its youthful energy while the city boasts a strong local food, music, and art scene. It's also a great place to live, work, and explore.

Irvine, CA

Shutterstock

Irvine, California in sunny Orange County is known for its family-friendly vibe, excellent schools, and thriving economy. Home to the University of California, Irvine, the city offers a mix of culture and nature with great parks, bike paths, nearby beaches and the Irvine Spectrum Center, a popular shopping and entertainment destination.

Honolulu, HI

Kinø

This tropical paradise and state capital, located on the island of Oahu, is famous for its stunning beaches, including the iconic Waikiki Beach, and its rich cultural heritage. Honolulu offers world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment alongside scenic landscapes like Diamond Head and lush rainforests. Home to landmarks like Iolani Palace and the Pearl Harbor Memorial, Honolulu is known for its warm aloha spirit.

San Francisco, CA

Juan Salamanca

Hop on a cable car ride in San Francisco, the #7 happiest city on the list. It's year-round mild climate and stunning hilltop views remind us just how stunning this city is. From the Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field, and Presidio Tunnel Tops to bustling Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights, Valencia Street in the Mission, and Hayes St. in Hayes Valley, there's tons to explore from a world-class food scene to indie shopping to museums and coastal views.

Pearl City, HI

Pearl City is a charming suburban community located on the island of Oahu, just west of Honolulu. The nearby Pearl Harbor National Memorial and surrounding waters with scenic views hold both historical significance and recreational activities like boating. The city itself has a peaceful close-knit community and is family-friendly with excellent schools, parks, and shopping centers.

Columbia, MD

Shutterstock

Located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Columbia is known for its diverse neighborhoods, excellent schools, and many green spaces with parks, lakes, and over 90 miles of walking and biking trails. Columbia’s town center features shopping, dining, and entertainment options, including the Merriweather Post Pavilion, a renowned concert venue. With a strong sense of community, access to major cities, and a focus on sustainability, Columbia is not surprisingly in the top 10 happiest cities in the U.S.

The moment we met Brooke Davis (played by Sophia Bush) in the second episode of One Tree Hill, I knew I'd love her. I didn't realize, however, that she'd become one of my favorite TV show characters of all time. The CW series, which ran from 2003-2012, turns 21 on September 23, and it's widely regarded as one of the best teen dramas. In addition to centering relationships, the angst of coming of age, and Carolina Basketball, One Tree Hill stands apart because of how poetic its story is. Haley, Lucas, Peyton, Brooke, and Nathan all wrestle with growing up in a relatable and emotional way. And Brooke far and above becomes the best part of the show as she evolves from stereotypical mean girl to fashion designer to mom and business owner.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

She's complicated, sassy, and, unlike a lot of other female characters, far from one-dimensional. At the beginning of the series she intentionally makes questionable decisions — like lying about being pregnant with Lucas' baby in season 1 or making fun of the fact Peyton had two dead moms by season 3 (I still can't believe this, TBH). But as Brooke matures, she finds she finds strength in her vulnerability. And before she helped land her attacker Xavier in prison, became a mother, and reopened Karen's Café, a single moment solidifies Brooke as THE One Tree Hill character for me: the photo project.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

In season 4, episode 13, "Pictures of You," the students at Tree Hill High are paired up for a photo project to help them get to know each another better. Brooke gets paired up with Chase (Stephen Colletti), and after admitting she lied about a test because she worried she wasn't good enough for him, Brooke reveals just how inadequate she feels. This is such a shocking conversation to watch as a viewer because at first glance, Brooke has it all: she's popular, she's wealthy, and she's gorgeous. But knowing someone so seemingly invincible feels that way made me feel seen.

Chase ends up taking Brooke's yearbook photo with "not smart enough," "not talented enough," "not pretty enough," and other insecurities written across the projector. And even though these horrible thoughts literally cover Brooke's skin (which is exactly how my insecurities feel sometimes — obvious and visible), she looks into the camera with the tiniest smile.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

"That scene was so personal to me," Sophia Bush revealed to Buzzfeed. "That was something that I had opened up to our writers about in my own life. I remember when I read that script, I felt so ashamed. I felt so exposed reading it on the page. I remember feeling so embarrassed and being like, 'Oh my god, I was having a conversation about motivation for characters, and they're using it. I don't know if this is okay.' It was my first lesson that if you can be courageous enough to open the thing that you're most afraid of, people won't back away from you; they'll lean toward you and say, 'Wow, you, too?' To create that for our audience and to begin to learn that for myself as a young woman was really a profound experience. That was a big one."

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

This moment solidifies Brooke as a character we all love simply because it's so relatable. And seeing how Brooke reclaims her worth based on the fact that she's enough on her own, that her value doesn't depend on how much she has to offer, makes me feel more empowered every time I watch it.

"People are gonna label you," Chase says in a voiceover of the scene. "It's how you overcome those labels, that's what matters." And I think that's what One Tree Hill — and Brooke Davis — is all about.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway or a week-long vacation with your friends and family, you'll want to consider making your way to Stowe, Vermont — especially in the fall. Last month, I took a trip out there for the first time, and I absolutely fell in love with Stowe. From the beautiful nature to the friendly people and outdoor activities, I wondered why I've never been before! Oh, and did I mention it's only a 45 minute flight from New York City? In less than an hour, you can be transported from the hustle and bustle of city life to beautiful greenery and the great outdoors.

While Stowe is definitely beautiful year-round, I'm partial to the autumnal, small town charm you'll get as the leaves start to change and the air gets chilly. Keep on reading to find a list of hotels, attractions, restaurants, and transportation options you'll want to consider for your upcoming trip to Stowe. Trust me, you'll want to visit ASAP when the leaves change colors — your Insta feed will thank you.

Hotels in Stowe, Vermont

Spruce Peak

The Lodge at Spruce Peak

You can stay right in the heart of the mountains at The Lodge at Spruce Peak. This four diamond luxury property has a variety of guest rooms, studios, suites, penthouses, and residences in addition to several on-site restaurants, a spa, fitness center, and a salon. This is a great option if you want to be right in the heart of the action during the summer, spring, winter, or fall. But in the fall? Wow, imagine peaking out that window during peak fall foliage!

Outbound Stowe

Outbound Stowe

Another popular hotel is Outbound Stowe, located a few miles from Mt. Mansfield and offering access to Stowe's Recreation Path. You can stay in more classic king or queen bed rooms, depending on your needs — or you can even rent out cabins, suites, and pool-side rooms. This property offers on-site dining and has pools and fire pits to sit around on those brisk autumn evenings.

Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge

Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge

Last but not least, Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge is located less than five miles from Vermont's highest ski mountain and offers access to backcountry trails to be one with nature. The property has 53 rooms and is filled with amenities including indoor/outdoor pools, fire pits, a game room, and a bar. At the bar, you'll notice they utilize the Bartesian to create quality cocktails and mocktails in seconds. All you have to do is select the pod you want and the machine does the work for you. It's such a neat concept that'll give you an affordable, premium-quality drink in minutes.

Attractions in Stowe

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

If you're in the mood for delicious cider donuts, apple cider, and fresh-baked sweet treats, then you'll definitely want to make a pit stop at Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Not only can you see a cider press in action, but also donuts being made in house. Aside from pastries, you'll also find an assortment of jams, jellies, honey, tea, condiments, and spices on the shelves that come from local vendors in Vermont.

Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's Factory

Ice cream lovers will rejoice when they visit the Ben & Jerry's factory. Technically, the factory is in Waterbury, but...it's only a 20 minute drive from Stowe — close enough to have it on this list! The factory is home to exclusive merchandise, a scoop shop, photo opportunities, and a guided tour for guests. Tickets for the guided tour are available online and in person, however, it's highly recommended to purchase ahead of time since they tend to sell out quickly. The tour provides a glimpse into the history of the company with a short video, followed by a look at the production line, and a tasting opportunity.

Stowe.com

Stowe Gondola SkyRide

Unless you're afraid of heights, then you'll want to take a trip on this gondola that provides views of Stowe from the top of Mt. Mansfield. On top of the mountain, you'll find a gift shop and a few restaurants including The Cliff House and The Waffle. It's open daily from June 15 to October 20 and is $40 per adult and $26 per child. Tickets are available online and in-person, but it does sell out quickly.

Other attractions you'll want to check out while in Stowe include the Noyes House Museum and Green Mountain Distillers for tastings and unique opportunities you won't find anywhere else.

Shopping in Stowe

The Country Store

The Country Store

Located on Main Street, The Country Store has kitchenware, gadgets, home decor, bedding, and other trinkets that you can pick up while in the green mountain state. You'll find brands including Geometry, Jellycat, Matouk, Pom Pom London, and Casafina at this store located two doors down from the Stowe Community Church.

Instagram/@theflyrodshop

The Fly Rod Shop

The outdoorsy folks will want to make a stop to The Fly Rod Shop which is home to everything and anything fishing related. Aside from gear and tools, they also offer guided tours and trips including ice fishing, fall boat tours, fly tying classes, and even free casting clinics.

Transportation in Stowe

Peter James Eisenhaure

While downtown Stowe is walkable, you'll need a car to get just about anywhere and everywhere else. Uber and Lyft are very unreliable in the area so you'll want to consider transportation ahead of time. Go Stowe has some options for reliable car services and travel companies in the area.

The Vermont Explorer

I highly recommend Gary from The Vermont Explorer. He offers rides to and from Stowe's most popular tourist attractions, airports, and anywhere else you could possibly want to visit. He also does tours of some of the local breweries, a fall foliage tour, and a mountain tour. He's extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and offers fair prices for her his services.

Additional Taxi and Car Services

Other travel services include Patriot Transport, Sub Zero Taxi, GOGO Charters, Neil’s Wheels. I can't speak directly on these services since I haven't used them, but they are recommended by Stowe's tourism board.

Dining in Stowe

Spruce Peak

Tipsy Trout

The Tipsy Trout offers guests with a menu filled with fresh seafood and an extensive wine list. Not only is the food sustainably sourced, but the restaurant has breathtaking views of Mt. Mansfield so you can eat in a picturesque environment. Some popular menu items include crab cake sliders, seared scallops, lobster agnolotti, and salmon poke.

Harrison's Restaurant

Harrison's Restaurant

Open Wednesday to Saturday, Harrison's Restaurant is a family-owned restaurant that has local and seasonal offerings for customers. As soon as you walk in, you'll get a very woodsy, home grown feel — exactly what I'm looking for when I need a cozy meal on a fall evening. The menu has an assortment of fish, meat, pastas, soups, and salads plus kid-friendly options, too.

Stowe.com

Cliff House Restaurant

If you decide to take the gondola, then you'll definitely want to stop by Cliff House Restauranton the top of Mt. Mansfield. This restaurant is very popular and encourages a reservation (although walk-ins are welcome) and gives customers a one-hour window to eat. I mean, just imagine these views come October!

Does Stowe, Vermont have a downtown?

Jeffrey Clayton

Yes, Stowe does have a downtown area. It's pretty walkable and has a few well-preserved historic buildings and many entertainment, shopping, and dining offerings for visitors.

Is Stowe a walkable town?

Sadia Afreen

Downtown Stowe is walkable, however, to get to different places you'll either need to have a rental car or utilize a car service. Be sure to plan ahead the distance between attractions you're looking to visit so you can time everything accordingly.

How many days do you need in Stowe?

Rafael Rodrigues

The amount of days you need to spend in Stowe depends on what you're trying to see and do. For example, if you want to check out several hiking trails and ski, then you may want to stay closer to five days. On the other hand, if you want to peruse the downtown area, look at the autumn foliage, and get a general feel for the town, then two or three days is definitely sufficient.
