7 Reasons Cruises Aren’t Just for Retirees

Cruise ships get a bad rap. If you’re like me, you might have believed that they’re a bit of a lazy way to travel — that you don’t get to spend time in nature or allow you to get a real sense of a place, or that they lead to overcrowding in whatever town you land in. But while cruising is definitely different than, say, living out of your van for a year, my recent experience taught me that there are way more perks than naysayers would lead us to believe.

While I didn’t encounter many millennials on the cruise, I had a blast — and came to realize that retirees are having all the fun on these ships. Here are a few reasons young folks may need to reconsider their cruise ship cynicism.

1. You can see a ton of places… but you don’t have to move your stuff. Cruising has the feel of an international road trip, but without the backache of sitting too long in the car. I boarded the Viking Star Homelands cruise, and over seven days we docked in Berlin, Germany; Copenhagen and Ålborg in Denmark; and Stavanger, Eidfjord, and Bergen in Norway. Passengers who took the full 15-day trip also visited Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Tallin, Estonia; and Gdańsk. Where else could you get a taste of so many places without ever having to pack and move your stuff?

2. There’s help with planning your itinerary. No matter how old you are, sometimes the worst part of a vacation is when you get stuck being the person trying to organize everything: where should you go, what’s good to eat, what tours are in the area. Cruising gives you a leg up in that department because the cruises often have companies they work directly with to provide complementary add-on excursions for their clients. That means you get the benefit of having a full, interesting day, without having to worry about getting to the ship on time.

3. Cruises are getting on the adventure trend. If you think an older age demographic means you’ll be stuck on tour bus excursions, you’ve got it wrong: There are plenty of older folks who are happy to get their hearts pumping. With Viking, I went on a seven-mile kayaking trip through a fjord in Norway, explored a disintegrating lighthouse in Denmark, and had several excursion options for day hikes. If you really want to explore new-to-you places, there are adventure cruises all over the place, from the Amazon River with Delfin to Antarctica with Hurtigruten. Even REI has cruising expeditions packed with kayaking, snorkeling, and other outdoorsy activities.

4. There are cruises to suit any interest or age demographic. Admittedly, not all cruise ships are dominated by 60-somethings. There are just about as many cruises are there are types of people. Love EDM? Try the Holy Ship! cruise. Want your kids to be entertained? Royal Caribbean and Disney cruises are regularly praised by families with young children. If the sheer size of some cruises isn’t for you, look for smaller cruise ships, which can go in shallower waters that big cruise ships can’t reach. The Viking Star, for example, only held 930 passengers. That’s relatively small for an ocean liner, and that meant it could take us to scenic Eidfjord, which had a population of fewer than 1,000 people. Beyond a single large hotel, there were no signs of it being a tourist destination — perfect for someone who wants to see more than the travel hot spots.

5. They have all the perks of a resort. Some cruises really focus on wow-factor entertainment, like MSC Meraviglia‘s Cirque du Soleil performances, Norwegian Epic‘s Broadway performances, or Carnival Vista‘s waterpark and zip lines. But many of them have a few perks in common. Like a waterfront pool on your vacations? Cruises have those. Always book spa time? Set sail and get pampered. Room service? Fitness studios? inclusive dining? Check, check, check.

6. Cruises last as long as you want them to. Cruises don’t have to mean cashing in all of your vacation time. You can book a quick three- or four-day trip, a week, or several weeks. If you really want to go for it, there are even cruises that last nearly a year and travel around the world.

7. We could all use an excuse to disconnect. Regardless of our age, most of us would love to disconnect — but not everyone wants to head into the woods to do it. Because cruise ships often take passengers to foreign destinations and travel through the ocean, cell service and WiFi aren’t a given. Not having a signal makes it a whole lot easier to step away from your phone and enjoy the moment. Like sip a cocktail in an infinity pool while watching a landless horizon. See? Digital detoxing.

A trip to Montana isn't complete with visiting a national park. Glacier National Park is home to over 700 miles of trails making it the perfect spot for those hikers looking to venture off the beaten path. You'll be able to see melting glaciers (hence the name) as you explore alongside lakes and valleys. If you enjoy backpacking, then you can do that at this national park but you'll need to get a permit in advance. Don't worry if you forget to file a permit because the Glacier Park Lodge is right next door and they have rooms and suites to keep you comfortable.

Yellowstone is the world's first national park — crazy, right? There's so much to do and see at Yellowstone it can be hard to find where to begin. It runs for 20 miles and can be seen from various points in the park. It's a great location to take those picturesque photos for your Instagram feed — trust me. For every beloved Starbucks item, there’s one that’s equally disliked. Whether they’re menu mainstays or have disappeared forever, Starbucks baristas and customers have some very strong opinions about the many menu items the chain's released over the years. This Reddit thread in particular details the discontinued Starbucks items that fans of The ‘Bux miss “the least” – AKA ones they were more than happy to say goodbye to.

Whether baristas were irked by the process of making them, their general flavor, or customers’ reception of ‘em, these discontinued Starbucks items departed from menus with a sincere “good riddance.”

1. Cloud Macchiato

Launched in collaboration with Ariana Grande back in 2019, the Starbucks Cloud Macchiato featured a fluffy, meringue-like foam topping made by blending nonfat milk, vanilla syrup, and a “cloud powder.” It was available to order in two familiar flavors: caramel and cinnamon.

Several Starbucks baristas noted that they simply did not care for making it, especially because the included cloud powder contained egg. This frustrated many plant-based customers, as the drink couldn’t possibly be made fully vegan.

“Was more annoying to make than anything,” one barista commented on Reddit. “Also they didn’t [really] advertise that it contained egg.”

“Tasted foul, irritating to make, having to explain that it cannot be made vegan (thanks Ariana…), and if it was mobile ordered you were almost guaranteed to receive a deflated cup of disappointment and regret,” another user said.

2. Spicy Refreshers

I got to get a first taste of Starbucks’ Spicy Refreshers when they dropped during the summer of 2024. Admittedly, I didn't think they’d be that good, especially because at the time, it seemed like the chain was grasping at straws to retain their fan base. At the same time the spice-infused Refreshers launched, Starbucks also debuted their (short-lived) boba, and it was just wild. There was also a Spicy Cream Cold Foam included in the launch.

Out of the three Refresher flavors available (dragonfruit, strawberry, and pineapple), the pineapple one tasted the best. The trio turned out to be pretty hit or miss, and lots of fans and baristas agreed.

“Those spicy drinks feel like a fever dream,” one person wrote on Reddit. “Genuinely forgot we had those and forgot how horrible they were.”

Funnily enough, many more people weighed in and said the now-discontinued drinks were only tasty with a shot of tequila included. Fair enough!

3. Oleato (Olive Oil) Drinks

Introduced in January of 2024, Starbucks’ first-of-its-kind Oleato beverages were crafted using extra virgin olive oil. The chain promised a “luxurious and next-level” flavor, but these drinks ended up totally bombing. Many customers and baristas reportednot being able to drink them whatsoever, or simply feeling sick if they did sip ‘em down.

"The barista refunded me after she saw me spit it back into the cup," this Redditor said.

"At my location, NOBODY likes the olive oil," another person noted. "Not even us baristas, it’s disgusting honestly."

4. Unicorn Frappuccino

Oh, lord. This discontinued Starbucks drink from 2017 truly needs to be studied. Available for a limited time, the Unicorn Frappuccino went viral for its “flavor-shifting, color-changing" qualities. It was crafted with an insane lineup of ice, milk, pink powder, sour blue powder, crème syrup, mango syrup, and sour blue drizzle – this massive load of sugar concerned plenty of people, too.

A former partner on Reddit verified that the reception of the so-called "famed" Unicorn Frappuccino wasn't all that it was cracked up to be:

"I think the worst part for me was, although it looked cool/pretty, it tasted absolutely horrible," they wrote. "If I recall correctly, it was the thick mango syrup, white chocolate, and some sour blue drizzle. I would say at least half of the customers who actually managed to get one from my store would return them half-full saying it was ‘disgusting’. And honestly, I agreed."

“If you were working in 2014-15, you get 'Nam flashbacks when anyone mentions unicorns or mermaids," another barista commented.

5. Toasted Vanilla Syrup

Discontinued at the end of 2023 for being generally unpopular, Starbucks' Toasted Vanilla syrup wasn’t quite well-received by baristas.

“That toasted vanilla smelled like every middle school mean girl ever, and it tastes like butt,” one person commented.

“Can’t believe I completely blocked the toasted vanilla out of my memory,” another said. “Sh-t was so nasty.”

6. Kiwi Starfruit Refresher

Crafted with green coffee extract, ice, and kiwi pieces, the long-gone Starbucks Kiwi Starfruit Refresher hit menus in 2020, but sadly fell off in favor of other Refresher flavors like pineapple and blackberry. Several Starbucks baristas were happy to see it go since it tasted so bad.

“I remember making it when I was training and thinking, ‘this shit smells like battery acid.,’” someone commented.

However, members of the estate of late author Michael Crichton (who wrote the OG screenplay for ER) alleged The Pitt was created as a sequel, without their permission. And the estate sued the creators of The Pitt in August 2024, according to TODAY.

“The Pitt is ER. It’s not like ER, it’s not kind of ER, it’s not sort of ER. It is ER complete with the same executive producer, writer, star, production companies, studio, and network as the planned ER reboot," says the lawsuit. "No one has been fooled."
