The Real Reason Why You’re Unproductive Before a Big Meeting

You have a small chunk of time, say about 60 minutes, before your next meeting starts. While you should probably take the opportunity to do something productive like entering expense reports, checking off a few minor to-dos, or getting organized for the day, somehow it never happens. But why? According to a new study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, having a looming meeting, task, or appointment actually makes us way less productive. (Yikes, don’t tell our boss!) Analyzing a series of eight studies, researchers found that people tend to believe they have less free time to accomplish tasks right before an appointment or meeting. “We seem to take a mental tax out of our time right before an appointment,” says Selin Malkoc, PhD, co-author of the study, and associate professor of marketing at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. “We figure something might come up, we might need some extra time, even when there’s no need to do that. As a result, we do less with the available time.”

To test their hypothesis, Malkoc and her colleagues devised two hypothetical situations and enlisted the help of approximately 200 people to play them out. In the first group, the participants were told they had a friend coming to visit in one hour and they already had everything ready. In the second group, they were told that they had no plans for the evening. Each group was then asked how many minutes they felt like they could spend reading during the next hour, both objectively and subjectively. “Regardless of whether they had a friend coming by or not, participants said that they objectively had about 50 minutes available to read,” Malkoc said. “That’s an amazing finding right there. Most people didn’t think even objectively they had a full hour to read. People are putting a little ‘just-in-case’ time into their schedules when there is no real reason to do that.” Subjectively, those who were expecting a friend to visit felt like they could only read for 40 minutes.

Then the researchers asked participants to give them their actual schedules for the next day, including when each of their appointments would begin and how much time they would need to prepare for each one. They then offered them the chance to take part in either a 30- or 45-minute study the next day, with some students being offered the study in the hour before one of their appointments and others being offered it at a time when they had no surrounding appointments. Here’s where it gets especially interesting: Even though the participants had already designated how much time they would need to get ready for their appointments, those who had an upcoming appointment were significantly more likely to choose the shorter study. “It was clear that they would have plenty of time to finish and have extra time before their next appointment, but they still were likely to choose the 30-minute study — even when they had a clear financial incentive to choose the longer study,” Malkoc observes.

Malkoc argues that the total findings of these eight studies suggest that a looming meeting or appointment on our calendars makes us less productive. “We seem to overestimate the things that might happen to take up our time, so we don’t get things done,” she explains. If you’re finding that you’re not feeling super-productive, consider taking a closer look at how you spend the hour before a big meeting or appointment. Obviously, you should still give yourself a set amount of time to make sure you have everything prepared, but perhaps set an alarm on your phone to go off 10 minutes before your meeting and dedicate specifically that time to preparing, instead of worrying about what you could be missing for a large chunk of your workday.

Scream 6 was one of the hottest movies of 2023, and we've been looking forward to Scream 7 since the credits started rolling! Even though we won't see Melissa Barrera return, I'm super excited to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott — and it looks like in addition to Friends star Courteney Cox stepping back into Gale Weathers' shoes, we'll also be seeing a beloved Yellowstone universe star taking on a brand new role.

Keep reading for the latest Scream 7 news — and everything you need to know about the cast.

Is Sidney going to be in Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Cast

Yes, Sidney Prescott will be in Scream 7! “Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!” franchise lead Neve Campbell says on Instagram. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The actress was not involved in Scream 6 due to salary inequity. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to ‘Scream,'" she told Variety ahead of the sixth movie's release. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

Who else is in the cast of Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

In addition to Neve Campbell, we'll see Isabel May (who you'll recognize from the Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923) appear as Neve's onscreen daughter. We could also see Courteney Cox reprise her role as Gale Weathers, via Variety.

However, we won't see onscreen sisters Melissa Barrera or Jenna Ortega in Scream 7. It was announced in November 2023 that Melissa would no longer star in the franchise following her posts on the Isreal-Hamas war, while Jenna's absence has been attributed to Wednesday season 2 scheduling conflicts.

When is Scream 7 coming out?

Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Release Date

Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026. This is an unexpectedly perfect release date because nothing sends a shiver down my spine like winter (and Ghostface of course).

What is Scream 7 going to be about?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Plot

We don't have an official plot for Scream 7 quite yet, but I'm feeling confident we'll see Sidney Prescott and (hopefully) Gale Weathers take down another Ghostface. Scream 6 co-writer Guy Busick has the sole writing credit on this new script, as well as Melissa Barrera's 2024 movieAbigail.

Is Scream 7 confirmed?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Yes, Scream 7 is officially happening! After Scream 6 (which was released in March 2023) became the highest-grossing movie of the whole franchise, a sequel was announced in August of that year. Kevin Williamson, writer for the original 1996 Scream, will direct.

Who do you hope to see in Scream 7? Check back here — and our Facebook! — for the latest news on your favorite movies.

In our series Selfmade U, we’ll tackle the most common questions and pain points that come up for business owners with tips and tricks from Selfmade, a virtual business coaching program, founded by Brit + Co founder Brit Morin and sponsored by Office Depot OfficeMax. We’ll hear from Selfmade members and business coaches on what it takes to run a successful business and make it as an entrepreneur.

Constant juggling of creative tasks, business decisions, and operational responsibilities can lead to stress, burnout, and a hit to your productivity. That’s why a daily mindfulness practice for entrepreneurs can not only be good for your well-being, it can also impact your business growth.

“To recharge and relax, I find solace in simple activities like walking to my office. I also have a weekly meditation session via Zoom with a friend who recently adopted a baby. It helps me find balance and unwind,” says Maria Londono, founder of Disrupt3rs, an app that helps creators learn the language of business in a fun and interactive way. “I also have a weekly ballroom salsa date with my husband, Francisco. These moments make a significant difference”

It’s hard to be fully present when managing and growing your business is always on your mind. But taking the time to clear your thoughts and rest your mind has its advantages to your business. You can train your mind to be more focused, resilient and better equipped to handle the challenges of a small business owner.

“Receiving the Office Depot OfficeMax scholarship to Selfmade has been a game changer for my business,” says Maria. “The most rewarding aspect of the program was feeling supported and connecting with like-minded women entrepreneurs. Having conversations with people who understand my struggles and joys as a builder makes a tremendous difference.”

Here are five ways a mindfulness practice can help you build connection, boost your creativity, and grow your business:

Reduce stress. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, have shown to reduce stress and increase the feeling of relaxation. “I always prioritize my meditation practice,” says Maria. “Finding a balance is an ongoing effort, and though it’s not perfect, it’s definitely worth it.”

Make better decisions. When founders are more mindful, they become more attuned to their thoughts and emotions, helping them recognize when they’re reacting impulsively. Feeling clear-headed, calm, and ready to face the day can help you consider multiple perspectives, take the time to evaluate risks, and make strategic decisions for the long term vs. knee-jerk reactions that can cloud your judgment and affect the long-term success of your business.

Nurture your creativity. Your best ideas come from giving yourself the space to explore new ideas without the pressure to go, go, go all the time. Tap into your creativity by taking a midday walk, doing yoga, or just closing your eyes. “I nurture my creativity by hanging out with my daughter. We read, dance, and play together,” says Maria. Tapping into your innate creativity can lead to innovative solutions, product improvements, and fresh approaches to how you run your business.

Increase focus and productivity. A daily mindfulness practice can train your mind to stay focused on the task at hand rather than getting distracted by everything on your to-do list. This healthy focus time can lead to better productivity too, allowing you to accomplish more in less time and make more efficient use of your resources.

Improve communication and relationships. Being a great communicator is key to running a successful business. You may have employees, partners, or clients you need to communicate with clearly and calmly on a daily basis. “I have a deep appreciation for my co-founder,” says Maria. “We keep each other balanced and don’t mind talking shop during our downtime.”

Maria was one of 10 Selfmade members to enter the Selfmade pitch competition in her cohort. “Pitching our business through Selfmade has taught us the importance of introducing our target client and bringing her to life,” says Maria. “This helps people connect with her pain points and understand the potential solutions we offer.”

As a result, Maria earned an Office Depot OfficeMax gift card to help support her business. “Office Depot has been instrumental in helping us grow our business. From laptops to Post-Its for ideation to printers, we rely on their products and services to meet our needs.”

Designing the perfect home is like self-care. Our spaces are increasingly evolving into our personal sanctuaries as more of us blend our living and working spaces. In 2025, this trend will continue, transforming homes into multifunctional havens: wellness retreats, gathering spots, hubs of tech convenience, and true reflections of personal style. "Creating a personal space and putting your signature on your home to create something unique will be a 2025 trend," says Lily Li, an interior designer from San Francisco's BoConcept. Gone are the generic, cookie cutter designs we see everywhere. 2025 will be all about you and what you love.

Here are top design trends for 2025, according to a recent Home Lifestyles 2025 report from global trend forecaster WGSN, plus our favorite 2025 trends buzzing on the home decor scene!

Statement lighting and mirrors like this Sarah Sherman Samuel Rook Mirror; handmade pottery; even small touches, like gold-rimmed coupe glasses or elegant trays for organizing your essentials, that elevate the ordinary. Things like refillable beauty products, climatarian cuisine (food chosen based on its carbon footprint), and products and services that encourage DIY, resale and repair will be big in 2025. Choosing quality pieces that will stand the test of time and even incorporating vintage pieces for their uniqueness and sustainability factor will be part of this trend.

Color + Pattern Drenching

Le Mieux et Cie
