4 Calendar Hacks That Will Actually Make Your Coworkers Respect Your Boundaries

work life balance

When it comes to remote work, what looks like increased freedom can often be just the opposite. Our friends over at Fairygodboss are experts on this subject, considering how many employers and career-minded job seekers they work with. We loved their take on how to achieve a work life balance by setting boundaries using just your calendar! We'll let them take it from here.

Many remote workers cite “flexibility” as one of the biggest benefits to working from home, even when their company doesn’t work flexible hours. Yet remote workers also report working more hours at home than when they were in the office.

“The pandemic-driven shift to remote work has eroded work-life boundaries and caused an epidemic of burnout,” Zahira Jaser and Thomas Roulet write in How Hyperflexibility Can Benefit — or Burn Out — Your Team. “If we can work everywhere and at any time, there is nowhere we can be safe from work.

Remote work gives us freedom, but we haven’t been taught how to manage it — and when we don’t, it can be hard to know when to start and stop and how to enforce boundaries when you’re actually working and when you’re not. Here are some practical calendar hacks to help you start setting and managing those boundaries.

1. Figure out what hours work for you and schedule working blocks.

Just like some people are up and at ‘em at 6 a.m. and others thrive at 10 p.m., figure out what working hours work for you — and when you’re best optimized to do certain tasks.

For example, you might learn that you’re best at creative work right when you log on, and then you experience some fatigue in the mid-afternoon. If so, you might want to adjust your tasks accordingly to start with ideation and creation, and more administrative or analytical tasks later in the day. This not only works with your internal schedule but helps with productivity and efficiency, too.

Once you know what working hours work for your task, use your calendar to block off time to accomplish those tasks, attaching any relevant documentation or notes to your meeting event. Start by overestimating how long these tasks will take you, then adjust as you learn how long you’re able to focus and complete your work.

2. Block off working hours.

Once you know what hours work for you, block off your working hours in your calendar. This helps set the boundary that you won’t be logging on before 8 a.m., for example, or checking your email after 5 p.m. If your working hours change depending on external appointments or projects, that’s okay; adjust your calendar accordingly when the time comes. The most important part of this exercise is blocking the hours so your team knows when you’re available — and when you’re not.

“Consider putting in your email signature line and/or voicemail "My office hours are from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. eastern" or something along those lines,” an anonymous Fairygodboss member recommended on the feed. “You can also put a daily Out of Office message up when you ‘leave’ for the day, with a friendly message stating your office hours and advising that you'll respond within 24 (or 48, etc.) hours.”

Adding these extra messages can help signal to external clients when you’re available and set expectations about when you’ll respond.

3. Block off time to rest and re-group.

“For humans, concentrating on work for every minute of an eight-hour day is ‘impossible,’” says Malissa Clark, a psychologist at the University of Georgia whose research focuses on employee well-being and workaholism.”

Yet many of us are expected to work eight-hour days, or even more. The key to getting through them without overworking or burning ourselves out is having proper time to rest and regroup between tasks.

Use your calendar to set breaks before you take them, whether that’s a lunch break or a walk break. Keep yourself accountable to taking these breaks by making them something you need to get away from your desk from. Maybe it’s making a special lunch and calling a friend while you eat, or planning on picking up a coffee during that 30-minute mid-morning break.

Tools like Reclaim will even automatically schedule de-compress time in between meetings, and automatically updates as new meetings are added to your schedule.

4. Give yourself something outside of work to look forward to when the day is done — and add it to your calendar.

“Schedule personal activities and have several go-to hobbies that you enjoy so you’ll have something specific to do with your personal time,” says Brie Weiler Reynolds, career development manager and coach at Flexjobs and Remote.co. “If you don’t have anything planned, like a hike after work or a puzzle project, you may find it easier to slip back to work unnecessarily.

While you don’t need to add “puzzle time” as an event in your calendar, blocking off time in your calendar that your coworkers can’t book over is important — and having something to look forward to will make you more motivated to actually go do that activity once the workday is done.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Therise Edwards, founder/CEO of Teshley Solutions, an education consultancy firm that helps students and families navigate the complexities of the education system K through 12.

What is an unexpected business challenge that you faced and how did you overcome it?

I wouldn't call myself a FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) expert, but I ended up having to know a lot more about it than I ever anticipated. FAFSA is what administers Pell Grants, which is what a lot of colleges base their financial aid on. I knew about the application changes, and some were excellent, but they made a series of critical errors and a lot of parents were scrambling. It was not my intent to have this as my area of focus; it just became a necessity.

What's a recent small win for your business?

Recent small wins are my collaborations. I formed partnerships with one organization that focuses on students with special needs. I hosted a webinar with the executive director of that organization. I formed a partnership with members from an insurance company on planning and paying for college. That was my first corporate sponsorship. And I've got a series of events coming out because others actually reached out to me. One of them I met through another networking platform, but I got to that platform from one of the sessions that I did with Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program.

How did you start to collaborate with external partners?

Just changing my strategies and my approach, and just being more secure and more emphatic in making connections. It ends up being this continual cycle.

Is there a woman in business that you admire or that you look up to?

I have two. Leontyne Anglin, who runs a nonprofit called Beyond Expectations. She works with a small pool of students, but she just gives them enormous exposure and opportunity. She's brilliant with collaborating with individuals and businesses and really bringing the students what they need. And then the other on a bigger scale is Cate Luzio, founder and CEO of Luminary, who taught her Business Plan Bootcamp through the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. She is just a dynamo. She is just so supportive of women entrepreneurs. She's awesome.

How did the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program help propel your business forward?

All of the collaborations and partnerships with the exception of one all came from joining the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. I’ve taken all of the free classes and the one on projections and pricing, something every entrepreneur struggles with, was very helpful. There have been so many of them. Sometimes you're completely ignorant in a category so you take the class and it's like, okay, that's good to have. But then sometimes you sign up for it and it's like, oh, yeah, I did know 90 percent of that, but this other 10 percent is going to be very, very helpful.

We’ve been (not so) patiently counting down the days until the Starbucks holiday menu returns on November 7. Other than the tasty seasonal drinks themselves, the best part about this time of year is being able to hold the cutest Starbucks holiday cups in-hand whilstgift shopping and baking up some holiday treats – the cozy feeling is unbeatable!

Starbucks

Historically, Starbucks debuts a new round of holiday cup designs every year that appear in stores the same day their holiday menu drops. The chain just gave us an advance look at what this year’s cups will look like, and they’re simply so cute and festive.

Starbucks

The team behind this year’s Starbucks holiday cups sought out to “make every sip a joyful one,” according to a Starbucks announcement.

“We love finding these genuine moments of joy and coffee to inspire the creative,” Kristy Cameron, creative director for the 2024 Starbucks holiday cups said. “Whether that’s coffee trees growing, beans roasting, cups toasting, or lights glowing – we wanted to share the warmth of our coffeehouse and the anticipation of the red cups arriving with our customers and partners.”

Meet The 2024 Starbucks Holiday Cups

Starbucks

The hot beverage cup designs themselves feel super clean, modern, and playful, drawing color inspiration from not only the classic Starbucks green, but cranberry red and baby pink. Some motifs you’ll recognize include retro ornaments and peppermints, which really add to the festive-ness of it all!

This first holiday cup design is named 'Joyful Connection.' It draws inspiration from round metal cooling trays used in the coffee bean roasting process!

Starbucks

This next design from the Starbucks holiday cups is called 'Lyrical Landscape.' Starbucks notes it's "reminiscent of holiday ribbons and the green rolling hills where coffee is grown."

Starbucks

The third design from this year's Starbucks holiday cups is named 'Warm Wishes.' The designers behind the cups drew visual inspiration from two coffee cups pictured from above and cheers-ing each other.

Starbucks

The final cup design is named 'Siren Chorus,' an homage to Starbucks' signature siren logo.

The drinks on Starbucks’ holiday menu will include familiar sips like the Peppermint Mocha and Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte, among some exciting new offerings! You can check out the full lineup here. Plus, we've got the answer for when Red Cup Day will be. 👀

Starbucks

The Starbucks holiday cups will come with every kind of drink order this holiday season, hot or iced. The iced holiday cups are more simplistic than the hot cup designs mentioned above, featuring white ornament shapes on the sides. We can’t wait to sip from them!

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Rita Suzanne, a marketing strategist for health and wellness businesses who learned to network, connect with other entrepreneurs, and build her business online and IRL.

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

I can totally understand falling for a costar. One scene gazing into each other's eyes, and (as the kids say), I'd be asking, "What are we?" Zendaya & Tom Holland and Ashley Park & Paul Forman both met on the sets of their most famous projects (Spider-Man and Emily in Paris, in case you were wondering), and this year's biggest movie event also features a brand new celebrity couple: Ariana Grande & Ethan Slater.

The co-stars made headlines when they ended their respective marriages and started dating each other, and Ethan Slater finally spoke out on the response to their relationship. Here's what he had to say, and the latest news on this couple.

  • The couple made headlines when they started dating the same month they separated from their respective spouses.
  • In a recent interview, Ethan Slater reveals the reaction to their relationship was "really hard."

My family is just collateral damage.” However, other sources claim Lilly and Ethan had been separated for a couple months before his relationship with Ariana started.

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater reportedly fell head over heels so quickly, their friends were telling them to pump the breaks. “Ariana’s been told it’s too soon to go public with him and to take things slower,” said an Us Weekly insider at the time. “She’s very aware of how she’s perceived by her fans, and she’s trying to be mature. September 30, 2024 — Ariana Grande Defends Ethan Slater

In a Vanity Fair cover story, Ariana opened up about the reaction to her relationship with Ethan Slater, revealing that “the most disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst version of [the story]."

“There couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him,” she says. “No one on this earth tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the people that he loves and cares about. There is no one on this earth with a better heart...I’m 31 years old and I’m not a perfect person, but I am definitely deeply good, and I’m proud of who I’m becoming. I will never let disreputable evil tabloids ruin my life or my perception of what is real and good.”

October 30, 2024 — Ethan Slater Finally Speaks Out About His Relationship With Ariana Grande

Almost two years after meeting Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater finally opened up about their relationship in a new interview with GQ. “Obviously, it was a really super big year and I think there was something that was really difficult about things in your private life being commented on and looked at by the public," he says. "There were a lot of big changes in private lives that were really happening, so it’s really hard to see people who don’t know anything about what’s happening commenting on it and speculating, and then getting things wrong about the people you love. So just to address that part of it, that feels really hard."

But the clouds also came with silver linings. “Of course, it was an amazing year and a really beautiful thing, and I’m just really excited," he continues. "I’m just really, really proud of Ari and the work she’s done on this. She’s poured herself into it. I’m really proud that I got to be there for that part of it, and I’m really excited to be there for this next step of it when the world gets to see the amazing thing that she did.”

These two took their relationship to the next level in the modern dating age — they put it on the grid. Well, not exactly. No. But does this still count as an Instagram hard launch? Absolutely.

This post has been updated.

Where the Gilmore Girls cast leads, I will follow, which includes numerous roles on shows like Étoile, The Handmaid's Tale, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and now Shrinking. Season 2 of Harrison Ford's hit show premiered on Apple TV+ October 16, and one of our favorite GG actors is making an appearance: Kelly Bishop! She's starring as none other than Harrison's ex-wife Susan. The thought of these two onscreen together makes me giddy — talk about a power duo! Here's when Kelly Bishop will be on Shrinking season 2, and everything else you need to know about the new season.

  • Shrinking season 2 premiered on Apple TV+ October 16.
  • While season 1, which follows a therapist who begins telling clients what he really thinks after he experiences tragedy, was about grief, season 2 focuses on forgiveness.
  • Kelly Bishop will guest star as Paul's (Harrison Ford) ex-wife Susan in episode 5.

When will Kelly Bishop guest star on Shrinking season 2?

Beth Dubber/Apple/EW

Kelly Bishop will guest star as Susan in episode 5, which drops on Apple TV+ Wednesday, November 6. And thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have a look at her character! “We always knew we were going to bring Paul’s ex-wife in because the second season was a lot about dealing with your past," creator Bill Lawrence tells EW. "And you can’t really move forward until you deal with your past."

"This season is about forgiveness," he continues. "Her arrival is a huge component because it’s tied into Paul’s family, and getting to hear, through Kelly, why he’s estranged from his daughter and what he feels guilty about was a great thing for his character."

There are two sides to every story, and let's just say I'm excited to hear Susan's side of things after hearing Paul's perspective for so long! And it looks like I wasn't the only one who could tell Kelly and Harrison are the ultimate duo. "We knew Kelly, just from having been fans, could definitely not only stand up to Paul, but even just dropping in for a few scenes, immediately feel like his equal and someone that could give as much as she got," Bill says. "Man, we love that combo of the two of them."

"This was the first time I had the pleasure of working with Harrison Ford," Kelly Bishop told EW. "I found him professional, amiable, and a delight to work with." I wouldn't expect anything less.

Who's in the Shrinking season 2 cast?

Shrinking Season 2 Cast

In addition to Kelly Bishop (who's now my favorite cast member), the cast of Shrinking season 2 includes Harrison Ford, Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.

What is Shrinking about?

Shrinking Season 2 Plot

Shrinking follows grieving therapist Jimmy, who throws policy & training out the window after his wife is killed by a drunk driver and starts to tell his clients what he really thinks. But as he makes these huge changes in people's lives, he realizes just how much his own is changing, too.

“When you pitch a show, half the time you’re dancing with sparklers and you’re not sure if you’re going to do what you said. You’re just trying to get somebody to agree to put it on TV,” Lawrence tells TV Insider. “But we pitched the first season as dealing with grief. And the second season, we pitched to these guys as forgiveness. In your head, you’re like, what does that mean? What does that look like? But I think anybody that’s a fan of the show will realize it’s not just for one person.”

And season 2, while focusing on forgiveness, also sees the fallout of Jimmy's choices — like how Grace is now in prison for pushing her abusive husband off a cliff or how Jimmy's relationship with his daughter Tia is still far from healed. Tune into the rest of Shrinking season 2 to see how that forgiveness plays out.
