Born to Be Wild: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Yellowstone Year-Round

Although seasoned travelers may complain about the crowds, there’s a reason that Yellowstone is so famous. In addition to the spectacular splendor of all that nature, there’s nowhere else in America where you can reliably count on being an arm’s length away from a herd of bison at any given moment (but please, for the love of God (and the wildlife), try to refrain from the selfies).

Though best known as a summer destination, fall, winter, and spring are also great times to visit this national treasure. From hiking, to fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, and camping, there’s no shortage of things to do here year-round. In fact, there’s now a daily shuttle operating in the winter, taking travelers from Bozeman Airport to Yellowstone and back, so there’s even more incentive to book your flight and head west.

Buy some bear spray, attach that bear bell to your backpack, and read on for your all-seasons guide to Yellowstone — the mountains are calling your name.

Where to Stay

The lodge at Old Faithful is a classic any time of year, but with its wooden interiors and roaring fires, it’s perfect for the wintertime. The Old Faithful Snow Lodges are only accessible via snowcoaches (which you can take on tours to explore the springs and geysers). Note when packing: Due to space limitations in these vehicles, the max you can bring is two suitcases and one carry-on per person, plus a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes.

For those who think the luxury of a king-sized bed and private bathroom is cheating at the whole roughing-it experience, the cabins at Roosevelt Lodge were made for you. Named after former president Theodore Roosevelt who loved to camp in this area of the park, the sparsely furnished cabins are ideal for those who wish to reconnect with nature on a more visceral level and provide a peaceful alternative for the wellness-seeking traveler looking to check in and drop out of the noise of day-to-day life. No WiFi, no problem.

What to Do

Yellowstone offers some of the most immersive outdoor opportunities in the country year-round. We recommend trekking through Lamar Valley to observe the wolf population if you visit in the winter. Lamar Valley, located in the northeast corner of the park, is one of the more remote areas of Yellowstone and is a prime spot to see wildlife. Aside from being the top destination for wolves, it’s also home to buffalo, bighorn sheep, and river otters.

Fishing opportunities abound along the Lamar River, although you should also be sure to visit Yellowstone Lake or Madison River for lure or fly fishing. Madison River, on the west side of the park, is especially recommended for fly fishing, and fall is the best time to catch the large trout coming in from Hebgen Lake. All three fishing areas offer plenty of tranquil places for solitude, so pack your boots and waders and wander down the riverbank in search of a serene spot; then find your bliss and cast away.

If you’re visiting in the winter, book a snowmobile or snowcoaching tour to explore the geysers and view the park’s legendary wildlife. We recommend Old Faithful Snowmobiling; the park is less crowded in the winter season, so the view of the famous geyser Old Faithful won’t be obstructed by hordes of tourists. Or, you can opt for a winter safari and explore the snowy terrain via snowmobile, snowcoach, or even a luxury van (a good choice for the frostbite-prone).

Keep in mind that the park is huge, and there’s simply no way to do everything in a day. Though, of course, we suggest getting out into the wild as much as possible, inevitably you’ll spend a fair amount of time in the car — either waiting in traffic caused by roadwork (a killer on winding roads), or stopped by buffalo meandering around your vehicle.

While you’re driving around the Figure 8 loop of the National Park, be sure to tune in to Yellowstone Public Radio for a fascinating glimpse into local culture. They recently interviewed people who survived bear attacks in the park, which is either comforting or terrifying, depending on your perspective and your propensity for anxiety. (Hey, we told you to pack the bear spray.)

Where to Eat and Drink

The ambiance in the dining room of the Old Faithful Inn simply can’t be beat: The wooden beams, bear murals, and bustling crowds are practically synonymous with the park itself. If you’re looking for a more serene environment, Grant Village Lake House Restaurant is situated right on the water. Its dramatic view of the sunset (and if you’re ambitious, sunrise) is the best way to start or end your day — nightcap or cup of coffee required.

The Lake Yellowstone Hotel offers the perfect pit stop for your last meal before leaving the park. Recently renovated, the hotel overlooks Lake Yellowstone, and the food is incredible. As a general rule, opt for the elk or the bison (when in Rome). Of course, any place you stop in the park for a meal will have its own appeal.

Visit a cafeteria for lunch in the Mammoth Hot Springs area, and you’ll be greeted by a large sign on the door with a step-by-step guide on the consequences of feeding the wildlife. As if that weren’t alarming enough, a smaller sign beside it warns “No Firearms Allowed.” Only in Montana.

While the '90s offered so many wonderful things, and I really do mean so many (y'all remember those iconic '90s toys?!), the decade also offered some major film flops. Considering I was born in ‘98, it may seem like I don’t have a leg to stand on here, but trust me on this one.

Here are the 10 worst 90s movies that, simply, should not have been made.

1. The Waterboy (1998)

Touchstone Pictures

I have so much, yet simultaneously nothing, to say about Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy. Sandler unwittingly (as far as I know) mocks a stutter and it seems as though they wanted that to be the film’s funny bone, and when that didn’t succeed, there wasn’t much else holding this movie up. That’s probably why it has a 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

2. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

Warner Bros. Pictures

Jim Carrey notoriously has a few poorly-rated films under his belt, but Ace Ventura: Pet Detective may take the cake. One of the reasons fans love Carrey is certainly for his range of facial expressions, but it has a time and place, and this film needed more than some quirky facial expressions to save it. The dialogue simply couldn’t be saved by a big Carrey grin, and for that reason, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is one of the worst films to come out of the 90s. And the movie’s 47 percent RT score isn’t doing it any favors.

3. Major Payne (1995)

Universal Pictures

Probably one of the most infamously bad movies of the decade, Major Payne (which has a 29 percent Rotten Tomatoes score) released in 1995 and we’ve never looked back… literally. I don’t know much about comedy, but I do know that delivery is everything, and Damon Wayans did not deliver.

4. Batman Forever (1995)

Warner Bros. Pictures

If there’s one thing the 2000s got right, it's the Batman franchise and universe. Unfortunately, the 90s missed the mark. Batman Forever leaned too heavily on over-the-top humor and campiness that it lacked any ounce of character development – something that is very needed in Batman movies, to say the least — which explains its 41 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

5. Wild Wild West (1999)

Warner Bros. Pictures

A diminished homage to the 1965 Wild Wild West show, the 1999 version failed to live up to the original’s tongue-in-cheek dialogue, developed characters, and the western of it all. Its campy tone didn’t win over new audiences and betrayed fans of the original series. All in all, Wild Wild West was a huge misfire, and only earned a 16 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

6. Hook (1991)

TriStar Pictures

I remember being so excited to watch this when I was a young lass, only to have my young self be very disappointed. Hook played far too much on creating a sentimental and nostalgic film that it neglected a plot line. It relied too heavily on honing in on references to the original tale that resulted in a messy plot that was, at the end of the day, confusing. Hook was sadly anything but magical, as is its 29 percent RT score.

7. RoboCop 3 (1993)

Orion Pictures International

RoboCop 3 completely deviated from what fans loved best in its original iteration. As most third installments do, RoboCop 3 was as much of a failure as it was a cash grab. It could’ve had something to do with swapping out and replacing the main actor for the protagonist, RoboCop, but what do I know? (The 9 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. That’s what I know.)

8. Mr. Wrong (1996)

Touchstone Pictures

Bill Pullman’s character isn’t the only thing wrong in Mr. Wrong, which has a 7 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. While rom coms usually, and obviously, consist of romance and comedy, this film’s plot points appeared manufactured and entirely unrealistic. It’s historically bad, so much so that Ellen DeGeneres (who stars in the movie) has joked about it being a “horrible flop that should have a sequel.” I get the joke, Ellen, I really do, but let’s hope there’s not a shred of seriousness in there.

9. Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)

20th Century

You’d think Speed 2: Cruise Control would set an example as to why sequels of great, standalone films should not be made, but alas we’re going to be plagued by them for years to come. This second installment lacked everything the first had to offer; the high-octane intensity, the action, the non-stop suspense, none of it was there in the sequel, leading to a film that lacked a real premise and any substance — and that got a 4 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

10. Barb Wire (1996)

Gramercy/Universal Pictures

I really didn’t want to put this one on the list because I love Pamela Anderson, but it’s only fair, and I cannot be biased. Barb Wire was, and remains, a hot mess with only a 28 percent RT score. There was no real trajectory of any aspects in this film, but particularly the aimless script. Thankfully, Anderson is having a redemption arc with her newest and upcoming film, The Last Showgirl and I’m loving it.

I truly believe that there are two types of people in this world: ones who like nice flights, and ones who like nice hotels. I, for one, am the latter of the two. I will fly the absolutely cheapest, tiniest airline you could possibly imagine....but I love a good hotel. And honestly, it works out because I ultimately save money on the flight and put it towards my lodging. In doing this, I've stayed at quite a few fun hotels over the years, from international destinations to right in my hometown of LA. These are worldwide, some of the best hotels out there that you should definitely add to your travel wishlist too. These 10 nice hotels will make you feel like you're living in a movie, so keep reading to see all the places that will make you wanna book a flightASAP!

Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or

Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or in Eze, France

Tucked away in a small medieval town in the South of France called Eze is the dreamy 5-star hotel, Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or. This hotel truly makes you feel like you're living in the movie The Bucket List — maybe because it was also featured in the film, but still. The picturesque views of the ocean, stunning amenities like the three cliffside pools, and the sprawling gardens all make for the perfect hotel and the reason why it's my number one nice hotel I've ever stayed in.

Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or is also one of the cheaper 5-star hotels I've stayed in, with rooms sometimes costing as low as $450 a night in the off-season. While this is still expensive, it's surprising when you see all that the property has to offer alongside the spectacular views and prime location.

Villa d'Este

Villa d'Este in Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como was another favorite destination of mine, and while you can't go wrong with any of the hotels on the lake, Villa d'Este was an favorite of mine. The service is simply unmatched, along with the to-die-for views of the water. Every day, breakfast is served right out on the patio with this stunning, serene view. The grounds are hundreds of years old, with acres of gardens across the property, so you truly can never be bored. The whole hotel just exudes old fashioned luxury, and it almost makes you feel like you have been transported to another time.

While Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or is my top choice, I have to say that Villa d'Este has the best service out of all the hotels I've stayed at — they truly treat you like royalty! Plus, there's a floating pool on the lake...so you really can't say no to that, right?!

Rosewood Miramar

Rosewood Miramar in Santa Barbara, CA

You will NOT want to miss out on staying here! The Rosewood Miramar is like stepping straight into a Nancy Meyers movie. It's a beautiful hotel right on the beach with some of the prettiest decor and interiors that you'll want to replicate in your own home (trust me, I've tried). The amenities include a pool right by the beach, plus top-notch service — a must for a nice hotel! I love this ocean-side stay for a relaxing, coastal vacay!

The Savoy

The Savoy in London, England

I particularly love The Savoy in London for their incredible spa. They offer a lot of fantastic deals where you can get a room, breakfast, and two spa treatments with your booking! I'd highly recommend this hotel for their stunning decor and luxury spa! I'm sure it will be a much-needed break for some solid R&R to enjoy while vacationing to London.

Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace

Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace in Versailles, France

Walking through the gates of Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palacewas like walking through Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. They have acres of gardens covered in flowers with the background being their massive chateau-style hotel. It was truly a remarkable stay! I adored eating breakfast in the garden room, and walking out to explore the grounds every morning. Plus, if you walk right out of the hotel gate, you'll waltz straight into the Palace of Versailles itself. So, it's proximity to all the tourist attractions nearby are super ideal! I loved the spa and amenities here, as well as looking out the large windows of our hotel room to see people riding horses right outside! This is a stunning stay that makes you feel like you're royalty in the countryside of your centuries-old chateau.

Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc

Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, France

Do you remember when Sofia Richie-Grainge broke the internet with her incredibly luxe wedding? Well, this was exactly where it all went down — the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc!I adore this hotel for so many reasons: the service is amazing, the rooms are to die for, the pool is iconic, and the location is prime! It's located in the adorable town of Antibes, France where there's a cute village filled with restaurants, shopping, and lots of action! There is no shortage of things to do when you're at this hotel. An added bonus is that they have the Dior spa located at the hotel, so make sure to stop in for a Dior facial! ;)

Passalacqua

Passalacqua in Lake Como, Italy

This is another Lake Como hotel, but I had to add Passalacqua because it was recently named the #1 Hotel of the Year by The World's 50 Best! What I love about this hotel is the massive array of experiences they offer! To name a short few: private cinema screenings under the stars with canopy chairs, exquisite, Michelin-level fine dining, cooking classes, tennis lessons, and so many more! That's not even scratching the surface of this hotel. It's truly a remarkable place and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so if you get the chance to stay here, definitely do it!

Waldorf Astoria Rome Cavalieri

Waldorf Astoria Rome Cavalieri in Rome, Italy

Perched right on the hill in Rome is this massive — and incredibly beautiful — 5-star hotel, Rome Cavalieri. The property truly speaks to the beauty of Italian architecture, design, and art. I mean, the art and decor adorning the walls is centuries old, and it seems like you're sitting right in the middle of a museum. The rooms have a gorgeous balcony that look out over the whole city of Rome, as well as the hotel's sprawling green garden. I stayed here a couple of years ago, and I still dream of their free massive buffet breakfast filled with the most divine pastries, meats, and cheeses. I love this hotel!

The Ritz Paris

The Ritz Paris in Paris, France

If you're like me, you've dreamed of staying at The Ritz Paris at least once in your life. It's a legendary, iconic hotel, with the famous Bar Hemingway located inside. Words can't describe how beautiful this hotel is as soon as you step through the doors. Everything from the rooms, to the location, down to the stunning (and large) lobby is everything you'd expect from The Ritz. It's another one of those once-in-a-lifetime stays that you definitely should try and go to! Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, California

I've stayed at the Waldorf Beverly Hills many times (I'm a Hilton member so I often get to stay for free — thank you points!), and I will never get tired of it. The staff are some of the nicest people and truly go out of their way to help you with anything you need. This hotel also has one of my favorite amenities: the house car. At this hotel, they have a house car that will, for free, drop you anywhere within 10 minutes that you need to be. For example, one day I wanted to get bagel on Rodeo, so I thought I'd take the house car not knowing what kind it was...up pulled a blue phantom Rolls Royce with constellation ceilings and plush carpet. Everyone thought I was famous because who gets dropped off at a bagel shop in a Rolls Royce?! Well, I did — but only because it was free! So if that doesn't convince you to stay here then I don't know what will!

January 29, 2025, the Year of the Snake, kicks off the Lunar New Year — which is also the perfect time to feng shui your home. Feng shui is the ancient Chinese philosophy that teaches you how to arrange your space to create balance and tap into good energies. Lunar New Year happens during the first new moon of the year, making it the perfect time to refresh your home and prepare for new beginnings. I recently chatted with Laura Morris and Anjie Cho, renowned feng shui experts, founders of Mindful Design School, and authors of Mindful Living: A Guide to the Everyday Magic of Feng Shui about setting intentions and planting the seeds for growth in the year ahead. Here's what I learned during our session.

Scroll down for 5 easy ways to incorporate feng shui into your home in 2025!

1. Color Can Work In Your Favor

The colors you wear and use in your home are energetically connected to you and your own personal qi, or what is defined as your lifeforce energy. Black, navy and charcoal with a mix of whites and grays were particularly good colors for my zodiac animal (the rat), which is funny because my home is predominantly those colors.

While every zodiac animal has favorable colors, Cho and Morris discovered a combo of two colors to be the best colors for everyone in the Year of the Snake. "We think a vermillion persimmon color, a really fiery color that's connected to the wood snake, will be the best color for everyone for the Year of the Snake," says Cho. I happen to love this Persimmon Birds wallpaper by Nathan Turner and both Cho and Morris encouraged me to bring in this complementary color to all my blues and neutrals.

Of course, this doesn't mean you have to paint your space an orange or fiery red or buy a pricey sofa in that color. Maybe you always use a pen or notebook in that color or wear something in the vermillion persimmon family and start to notice how it makes you feel this year.

2. Crystals Can Impact Your Goals

Apparently, I have a lot of water in my Chinese zodiac, which can mean I’m very creative and intuitive. The crystal that's connected to all that water is labradorite, which has a bluish, watery quality to it. It’s also said to be supportive of wisdom and intellect. "Water is considered an element with a lot of depth," says Cho. "When you think about the ocean, there's so much life happening underneath. Water is really a connector, a communicator, and with a lot of depth of wisdom." That's the kind of energy I'm cultivating? I'll take it!

3. Know Your Bagua

Bagua in feng shui is like a grid or a mandala that you can overlay on your home. It can reveal obstacles and patterns in your home that you might want to unlock or rearrange. You place this grid over your bed or starting at your entry and it shows things like Abundance, Wisdom, Growth, etc. Morris and Cho overlayed the bagua over my bed and shared where I can place the labradorite to activate my career, communication and connection this year.

4. Plants Can Enhance Your Qi

Plant choice and placement can impact your home's qi too. For example, jade succulents are best placed in your Wisdom bagua area while the snake plant, which cuts through negative energy and signifies strength, is best placed in your Alignment area.

5. Timing Is Everything

There are auspicious hours/days/months and more challenging hours/days/months in the lunar new year. My best months are January, April, and August, while my challenging months are June and July. My best hours are 7AM to 9:00 AM to 3PM to 5:00 PM and 1AM to 3:00 AM, as well as a slew of days where I can make sure to align with important meetings, or plan an event, or even talk to someone about a difficult topic. I can be strategic with this time.

"My most challenging months are always the months that I overwork and I'm totally burnt out," says Cho. "So I look ahead and I definitely say no to the things that aren't the most important in those months."

Turns out, January 8th is a really great day for zodiac rats, so I'll be putting my labradorite stone underneath my bed then with the intention that I'm bringing in more wisdom, more resources, more support for my career and for my communication and connecting to others.

This is where your zodiac animal plays a part too. “Snakes have this magnetism and this charm and there's an attractive quality about them, but they're also really wise and thoughtful and clever, and that's actually a good thing for the rat,” says Morris. Those born in the year of the Tiger and Pig may find the 2025 lunar year more challenging, but that doesn't mean it's going to be a terrible year. (My challenging year is coming up in 2026, the Year of the Horse).

"It's not the year to push yourself," adds Cho. "It's the year to take care of yourself. It's the year to say no when you're going to be stretched thin. And it also reminds us you can't have your left side of your body without your right side of your body. There's a natural shift to things, and it reminds us there's times to be quieter. There's times to be more internal, and there's times where we'll have more challenges, but with the greatest challenge also comes the greatest rewards."
