Get your resume ready, because you can help Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez make waves in Washington. The badass, history-making Congresswoman-elect (just a reminder: she’s now the youngest Representative ever elected to Congress) announced this week on her social media accounts that she’s filling positions on her staff to serve New York’s 14th Congressional District. Her team of 13, and possibly even more, will include both Washington DC and New York City-based roles.
Ocasio-Cortez is trying to get working-class Americans and millennials involved in politics, and that’s just what she’s doing with these public job openings, along her daily updates to Instagram, giving us a window into her new job in Washington. The Democratic Socialist’s platform includes universal healthcare, free public college and trade school tuition, abolishing ICE, and a “New Green Deal” to implement a completely renewable energy system in the US to cut back on climate change-causing carbon. If those sound like goals you’ve always been on board with, it’s time to start your application.
Some of the open roles include Digital Content Manager, Community Organizer, District Press Secretary, Financial Administrator, and Caseworker. A few may require commuting in between NYC and DC, or could even require you to relocate for the role. To apply, visit the site, and post your resume and a writing sample, which can even include a multimedia component, if that’s your specialty. There’s even a hint as to exactly what they’re looking for in staffers. “The ideal applicant is someone who is comfortable working in an office that will often go against the grain of traditional political thought, who is comfortable voicing creative ideas in a group environment, who is interested in wearing multiple hats and changing roles as goals change, and who is excited to be a part of an office that will take significant risks (and make mistakes!) as it pursues unconventional approaches,” Ocasio-Cortez’s application site says.
The team would especially like to hear from you if you have experience living or working in the 14th Congressional District, which includes areas of The Bronx and Queens, or if you volunteered with the Ocasio-Cortez 2018 Campaign in any capacity. Also, for the New York City-based roles, proficiency in the 14th District’s popular languages of Spanish, Bengali, and Chinese are a plus. However, if there’s not a specific role that you fit, the team encourages you to still get in touch via the application, because they’re looking for talented, passionate people who will stand their ground and are willing to shake things up, pretty much like Ocasio-Cortez.
Amongst tons of buzz of Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez responded to a follower’s inquiry on how to make your application stand out, and to no one’s surprise, she’s calling out strong-willed, unique individuals who might be a fit for her team. “Be yourself. Don’t let the boxes limit you. We care about people more than what’s on your resume. If you are a strong writer, have a deep understanding of BX/QNS, convey that,” the Congresswoman tweeted. “We are a team of risk takers. Experience comes in unconventional forms. Don’t count yourself out.”
