Aperol Spritzes Are Going to Be THE Drink of Summer 2017
Here in the US, we’ve borrowed a lot of delicious recipes and beverage ideas from other countries. Because taco recipes. Because fancy French recipes. And the latest trend to come over from other parts of the globe is Italy’s Aperol spritz — in fact, the drink’s popularity has surged on Pinterest by more than 90 percent. The best part? There are really only four ingredients you need: Aperol (an Italian aperitif), sparkling water, prosecco, and a slice of orange.
This is the perfect cocktail for sipping while sitting on a sunny patio during a hot summer afternoon. The soda water and prosecco give it a TON of fizz, making it uber-refreshing. Meanwhile, a citrusy slice of orange lends some kick, and the flavors of Aperol (bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona) add a subtle hint of bitterness.
There are, of course, ways to spice things up. You can garnish your Aperol spritz with fresh herbs, swap Champagne (or any other effervescent wine) in for Prosecco, or use club soda instead of sparkling water.
Serve it in a wine glass, a tumbler, or a Champagne flute — all options are completely apropos. You could even, dare we say it, serve it in a chalice glass.
