This Teen TV Star’s Debut Novel Is a Must-Read YA Mystery
When she’s not starring in some of your favorite shows, like The Fosters and Good Witch, teen movie star Bailee Madison is hard at work, scribbling away book ideas and diving into beloved YA novels for inspiration. Earlier this year, all that creativity and energy paid off with the release of her debut novel, Losing Brave. Co-written with Stefne Miller, Losing Brave is an unforgettable story about sisterhood, dark and deadly secrets, and the challenges of forging your own identity in the midst of tragedy. We caught up with the busy superstar and chatted all things creativity, books, and inspiration. Scroll on to learn more from this budding renaissance artist!
Brit+Co: Describe your book in six words or less.
Bailee Madison: Suspenseful, inspiring, thrilling, authentic, wild, and BRAVE.
B+C: Where/when do you do your best writing?
BM: Stefne and I had to become creative. We were working a full on LDR (long distance relationship), but for me, I always did my best writing when I was learning from Stefne. Every FaceTime session, from the early hours of the day into the late hours at night, was a blast.
B+C: What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done for book research?
BM: I actually Googled a bunch of Law & Order episodes when we first started writing. I wanted to feel inspired, LOL!
B+C: What’s your go-to cure for when you’re stuck in a creativity rut?
BM: For any rut, I turn to my worship music. I put my earbuds in and take a breath.
B+C: What two lady heroes do you turn to for inspiration, and why?
BM: My two lady heroes also happen to be my family: my mother and my sister. Their love, grace, faith, and strength inspire me daily.

B+C: What’s your latest Instagram obsession?
BM: It’s a tie between @juniperfoxx OR @this_girl_is_a_squirrel. I’ve always wanted a pet squirrel.
B+C: Can you name a book that you think deserves a little more love + recognition?
BM: Honestly, I’m not just saying this ’cause we co-wrote a book together, but I’ve been a fan of Stefne’s writing for years. You have to read her books, especially the Salvaged series. You’ll need tissues, FYI. I also have to say Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is a read everyone should experience.
B+C: What’s next on your to-read pile?
BM: Currently finishing We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.
B+C: What advice do you have for aspiring creative ladies?
BM: To believe in yourself, the world wants to hear what YOU have to say. Remain truthful and passionate and give it everything you’ve got. You have our support!
