How to Make a Birthday Advent Candle for Your Bestie’s Big Day
Face it, we all have a birthday-centric someone in our lives. You know, that gal or guy who starts planning their party an average of two months in advance and manages to mention the big day at least once a week? (TBH, we’re all a little guilty of obsessing over our birthday, aren’t we?) Well, we’ve got the way to be the best bestie ever — give ’em a gift a whole month before the day in question. We remixed the classic Christmas advent calendar into a birthday advent candle, so they can *literally* count the days. Because nothing says “happy almost-out-of-the-womb day” like rainbow sprinkles and the smell of birthday cake, right? (Pssst — bonus points for those of you who revamp this DIY for a bride-to-be!)
Materials
— jar
— microwavable candle wax (we used about 2 cups)
— wick
— essential oils (we used a vanilla sugar fragrance)
— rainbow sprinkles
— corn syrup
— candle label + calendar (you can download our template here!)
— sticker paper
— popsicle stick
— pen
Instructions
1. Using a popsicle stick, coat the inside walls of your jar with corn syrup. Pour the sprinkles in as you rotate the jar.
2. Microwave the candle wax (ours took about 3 minutes to fully melt), then add essential oils to the mixture. Place the wick in the center of the jar, then pour in the wax slowly. Let the wax solidify.
3. Print our birthday advent candle labels on sticker paper and cut them out. Fill out the calendar month on the grid, ending with the day of your friend’s birthday. Decorate the front label with fun birthday graphics if you like, then put on the stickers.
Take it from the girl who spent 45 minutes picking the brown sprinkles out of that bowl pictured above — the brighter your sprinkles, the better ;)
Using a popsicle stick, thoroughly coat the inside walls of your jar in corn syrup.
Pour in the sprinkles as you rotate the jar. Go slowly to ensure you’re covering the whole surface.
We’ll let you in on an industry secret: Rainbow sprinkles are super photogenic. They basically bump up the cuteness factor of everything they touch. Just so you know.
Carefully place the wick in the center of your jar. If you don’t have a metal base like the one we used, tie your wick around the popsicle stick. Rest the popsicle stick across the center of the jar’s mouth.
Microwave the candle wax (ours took about three minutes to fully melt), then stir your essential oils into the mixture. We used a sugar vanilla fragrance because, well, birthday cake.
Slowly pour in the microwaved wax.
Let the wax set for about 20 minutes.
While the wax is setting, print our nifty candle labels onto sticker paper. Write in the calendar month leading up to the bday babe’s birthday, and decorate the labels as desired. Once the wax has fully hardened, add the stickers to the candle.
There you have it — the sweetest pre-birthday gift a bestie could ask for.
Let the festivities begin!
