This App Shows You What 200 Calories Looks Like
Today, our daily caloric intake is about to reach its 2014 all-time high. It’s hard to gauge how many calories are going to be scooped up onto your Turkey Day plate, and while there’s hardly anything out there that can make you even think twice about going in for a second helping of Aunt Rita’s butterlicious mashed potatoes, there is an app that might inspire you to reach past the donut and toward a bowlful of blueberries during your next snack break.
Calorific (iOS) is an app that shows what 200 calories looks like in over 140 portioned pictures of foods and drinks. If you’re thinking, “Hey, I’ve seen something like this before,” that’s because the app was inspired by wiseGEEK’s visual project. And visual this baby is. The clean photography is simple and aesthetically pleasing.
Every day, we get 2,000-2,500 calories to spend on whatever we want to eat. Depending on your diet, you may want to go with vitamin-dense foods that are more forgiving with their calories while still filling your tummy, or, if you’re vegan, you might be more concerned with getting the right amount of amino acids. This app is more useful for the former than the latter.
From one spoonful of peanut butter to what looks like a whole bag of peas — and everything in between — Calorific might help you make better snacking decisions. And, like we said, the aesthetics in the app’s design are a nice added bonus. The app is free on iOS, but if you want to unlock every single item in the catalog, you’ll have to pay $2.99.
