Celeb Stylist Elizabeth Stewart on the Vintage Jacket People Are Always Asking Her About
Elizabeth Stewart knows good style. The Los Angeles-based stylist has spent 22 years working in fashion departments at the New York Time Magazine, WWD, and W Magazine, and she now regularly dresses A-list celebs like Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts, and Gal Gadot. Earlier this year, Stewart partnered with Walmart to launch Time and Tru and Terra & Sky, size-inclusive lines that feature trendy and versatile wardrobe essentials. We talked to Stewart to find out her power color, the fashion mantra she lives by, and what piece of clothing from her personal arsenal people are always asking her about.
Brit + Co: What’s your power color?
Elizabeth Stewart: Red is my go-to power color! While I love a good all-black outfit, you can never go wrong with a bold pop of red. I think it’s [also] smart to have a great red top in your closet, like this bold Time and Tru Plaid Shirt ($14).
B+C: What are some unexpected shopping resources you’ve found for great fashion?
ES: I’m so impressed by the versatile, high-quality, and stylish looks shoppers can get for great prices at Walmart. I’d also recommend sites like TheRealReal and eBay for previously worn fashions.
B+C: What fashion mantra do you live (and style celebs) by?
ES: Find what flatters you and accentuates what you want to show off. I believe in finding your best style, and then sticking to it and repeating it. Fashion is an education — it’s all about learning what looks best for you and makes you feel your best.
B+C: What piece of clothing are people always asking you about?
ES: I’m obsessed with my black vintage Gaultier couture jacket. It goes with absolutely everything, and I get the most compliments from it.
B+C: Name a celeb whose style you wish you could pull off.
ES: I love how Lady Gaga has so much fun with fashion. She represents one end of just absolutely going for it, and I also love the other end of the spectrum of people who stick to what they feel best in, like Ellen DeGeneres with her suits.
B+C: What 2019 fashion trends are you already swearing by?
ES: Neon is back and bigger than ever! I think we’ll see it everywhere and it’s easy to pair a neon top or accessory with an otherwise all-black outfit.
B+C: What 2018 fashion trends should we leave behind?
ES: I’d like to leave ripped jeans behind. My friends and styling team know how much they drive me crazy; I prefer clean, dark denim that can go with any outfit. One of my favorite pairs of jeans is the Time and Tru Core High Rise Skinny Jean ($17). I love the simple skinny denim look, and they’re so comfortable that I even wear them on long travel days!
