How a Squishy Black Ball Became My Go-To Facial Cleanser
Charcoal has been a skin-saving ingredient for my combination skin. Typically, I’ve used the detoxifying ingredient in the form of a mask or a sponge to help remove dirt and oil without leaving behind parched skin. Recently, though, I discovered a new bizarre-looking charcoal-based option to add to my routine.
Not sure what that dark sphere is? Neither was I when I first saw the Boscia Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser ($20). It looked like a black water balloon, honestly, and I couldn’t understand how the slightly squishy ball could possibly get my complexion in check. I took the plunge anyway, and after a week of using it consistently, I noticed that my skin was free of those tiny, lingering breakouts — hallelujah! And just like that, I was obsessed AF.
How does it work? Think of the ball as a modern take on bar soap. Glide it directly over your wet face or work up a lather in your hands. Rinse the soapy foam when you’re done and put the ball back into its plastic case for safe keeping.
Does it feel weird? The circular shape makes it feel like a mini massage, while the jelly-like texture is soothing and cooling. So, yes, it’s a little weird, but in the best way possible.
What does it do for your complexion? I have combination skin, so the balance of purifying and hydrating ingredients like activated black bamboo charcoal, hyaluronic acid, and hinoki oil (to shrink pore size and soothe) are ideal for me. After regular use, I’ve noticed a smoother, more even tone, which has allowed me to wear less makeup.
