Christie Brinkley’s Daughter Sailor Just Made “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit” History
It was just this past February that 63-year-old Christie Brinkley posed for the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue with her daughters, Alexa Ray Joel and Sailor Brinkley Cook. Now, the supermodel’s younger daughter is striking out on her own as part of the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit rookie class.
The mag took to Instagram to share a photo of Brinkley proudly snapping a pic of 19-year-old Brinkley Cook in a gunmetal one-piece swimsuit with her name, Sailor, emblazoned across the front. “Congrats to @sailorbrinkleycook, the first-ever SECOND GENERATION SI SWIMSUIT MODEL!” the caption read. “And a big thanks to @christiebrinkley for helping us pull off this epic surprise.”
That’s right — the legendary SI model was the one to break the big news to her lookalike daughter during New York Fashion Week. “You’re on your own now. You’re out of my sandy footprints, and you are on your own!” the proud mom told Brinkley Cook, as seen in a video of the surprise on Instagram.
As part of this incredible gig, Brinkley Cook will be heading off to Aruba in October for her first official shoot as a Sports IllustratedSwimsuit model. According to SI, the experience will be live-streamed for fans (and surely her mother) to watch from anywhere in the world.
Back in May, the young model opened up to People about posing with her mom in the 2017 issue, saying, “I grew up looking at these photos of my mom, never thinking that I would ever be able to do that.”
Brinkley famously appeared in the magazine eight times between 1975 and 2004, and set a record with three consecutive SI Swimsuit covers in 1979, 1980, and 1981. She has the experience and expertise if her daughter needs tips on how to nail any aspect of the job — but it certainly looks like Brinkley Cook already has exactly what it takes to follow in her mother’s famous footsteps.
“Sailor translates so well off the printed page — she takes beautiful pictures but that’s only one of the countless things she’s good at,” SI Swimsuit editor MJ Day said in Sports Illustrated‘s story about the news. “Much like her mom, she embodies everything it means to be an SI Swimsuit model, but she’s doing it in a way that is very much her own.”
