Beauty Mythbuster: Does Setting Highlighter With Coconut Oil Work?
The claim: Using coconut oil to set your highlighter kicks it up a notch and makes it last longer. When I first saw this beauty hack on makeup artist and beauty vlogger Huda Kattan’s Instagram, I knew I had to put it to the test, because I love a good highlight.
On most days, I opt for a natural-looking glow by using Glossier Haloscope ($22) on my cheekbones, but when I have a fun event or head out with friends, I like to use an amped-up powder highlighter, which is perfect for this beauty mythbuster.
STEP 1: APPLY POWDER HIGHLIGHTER
Start by sweeping a powder highlighter onto your cheekbones. I’m using Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator ($28) in Rose Gold here.
STEP 2: ADD THAT COCO OIL
Gently pat on a thin layer of coconut oil using your fingers. Make sure you don’t rub it in or else your makeup will smear! The goal here is to use the warmth from your fingers to help it blend into the skin and highlighter.
STEP 3: TOP IT OFF WITH MORE HIGHLIGHTER
Now, apply another layer of highlighter on top of the blended-in coconut oil. The coconut oil gives it something to really stick to while also providing a natural, dewy glow underneath the highlight.
DID IT WORK?
Yes! I definitely noticed a difference by adding in coconut oil to my highlight routine. This beauty hack resulted in a pretty dramatic effect, so it’s not something I would wear to the office or for everyday life — but it would be perfect for a night on the town.
