Hey, You’re Probably Wearing Your Shapewear Wrong

Whether you’re aiming to smooth out, perk up, or whittle down, there are now more options than ever to sculpt your look. Unfortunately, that also means there are more than a few ways it can go wrong. From rolling down to riding up, the foundation-piece fails are plentiful and can make you shy away from shapewear altogether. To ensure your undergarment experience is nothing short of excellent, we turned to Madelyn Ulrich, Senior Designer at Yummie, for guidance. Ahead, common mistakes and ways to avoid them to make shapewear your best friend instead of your worst enemy.

1. Your shapewear’s rolling down. “Make sure you’re in the correct size,” says Ulrich. “Shapewear should smooth out your lumps and bumps — not make new ones! If you’re in a size that is too small, you could be creating more problems than you’re solving. Getting your proper size is very important. Just because you are a medium bottom does not necessarily mean you’ll need a medium in shapewear. Try things on.” Brit + Co Pick: Jockey Skimmies Cooling Slipshort ($24)

2. Your bra is riding up. “Fit is incredibly important when finding your go-to bra. You would be very surprised to learn how many women don’t know their actual bra size, ” Ulrich says. “If your bra band is riding up in the back, it’s too big. The first and most obvious step is to get measured. Just keep in mind that some sizes vary by store, but should be consistent across the board.” Brit + Co Pick: Soma Vanishing Back Full Coverage Lace Trim ($58)

3. Your tights are making your feet slip in your boots. “The best hosiery pieces are ones that provide a solution,” Ulrich notes. “I like (Yummie’s) opaque tights with hidden cushion foot. This means I don’t have to wear an additional sock with my booties — it’s comfortable and I don’t have to put two layers on my feet.” Brit + Co Pick: Yummie Opaque Tights with Hidden Cushion (Tall Boot Length) ($32)

4. You have VPL. According to Ulrich, “As we know, high waist pants and shorts are very much on trend right now, and if you want to wear shapewear under them, you can get that awful VPL. Look for options out there that are seamless and still hold you in.” Brit + Co Pick: Spanx Women’s Everyday Shaping Panties Brief ($22)
