This Costa Rican Dog Sanctuary Is a Puppy Lovers’ Dream
Picture this: Happy dogs frolicking everywhere, following you excitedly through the hills, giving you all the cuddles and wanting all of your loving attention. Does this sound like a dream you’ve had? Us too! But it’s also an actual real-life place, pet-adoring friends. There is in fact a sanctuary in Costa Rica that is a magical place filled with dogs of all shapes and sizes, running around freely, just waiting for you to come and spend the day (or, like, forever) with them. Yeah, basically a dog-lovers dream come true!
It’s called Territorio de Zaguates, the Land of the Strays, but we think perhaps it should be renamed “Doggy Dreamland” or “Puppy Pet Paradise.” Over 900 rescued dogs are free to roam the grassy hills in the mountains of Santa Bárbara in Costa Rica’s Heredia province through the day, then at night, the pups are provided beds and shelters.
“The Land of Stray Dogs, or Territorio de Zaguates in Costa Rica, is considered one of the best places on the planet for a dog to live,” the sanctuary posted on its Facebook page. “… Each dog is given a name… (for their egos, lol). If you wish to adopt you can schedule a walking hike on their property, and if any of them choose you, you will be allowed to adopt them. Of course, anyone is welcome to just come for a free hike to hang out with the dogs.”
The sanctuary has a ‘no kill’ policy and neuters its animal residents to keep the population under control. It also runs an adoption program to help match suitable pups to loving families.
If you don’t happen to be in Costa Rica, you can either tag a Costa Rican friend and tell them about this awesomeness, make a donation to the sanctuary or plan your next trip to this pup paradise!
