Courtney Cox Explains Why She Turned Down the Role of Rachel on Friends
Who doesn’t love Friends? From the theme song to the Brad Pitt episode, everything about the late-’90s sitcom is memorable. When Netflix first announced the show would be coming to the streaming service, we were collectively thrilled. Rewatching the entire series reminded us how perfect each and every character was on the show, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else taking part in the antics of Rachel, Joey, Chandler, Monica, Pheobe, and Ross. But the word is out that star Courtney Cox — who, as you’ll recall, played Monica Gellar — originally was supposed to play Rachel Green… and her reason for turning down the role isn’t really that surprising.
In an interview with Sam Jones on his show, Off Camera With Sam Jones, the actress admits that while she was initially offered the role of Rachel Green, she felt a deeper connection to Monica Geller and asked for that role instead. “I’m very similar to her. I’m not as clean as Monica, but I am neat. And I’m not as competitive, even though some people, my partner Johnny McDaid, would say I am.”
Mind = blown!
While there have been rumors that the Friends cast might reunite for a show, that doesn’t actually look like it will happen anytime soon, which really isn’t all that bad considering we’ve got 10 entire seasons of the show to watch again and again… and again.
