Style Hack: Switch Up a Floppy Hat in 3 Simple Steps
Festival season, picnics, beach, bbqs — all of these call for floppy hats to top off your look. Whether you’re a beach sunbather or a poolside kinda gal, you can’t deny the awesomeness of a solid floppy hat. This project takes the oh-so-loved geometric trend for a spin with an average summer staple. You’ll love it so much that you might rock it straight into autumn — we know we will!
Materials:
— felt floppy hat
Tools:
— cutting mat
— washi tape
— ruler
— craft knife
We recommend a felt hat, because it will give you the cleanest lines when you cut into it.
Instructions:
1. Apply 3 strips of washi tape in the shape of a small triangle.
2. Line up your ruler with the tape, then slice the fabric using the ruler as a guide.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until your head is spinning with triangles!
You’ll have to use some elbow grease to make sure each cut is crisp and clean. Press firmly! The ruler is handy for keeping each cut straight and precise. Simply line up the ruler with one side of the triangle before each cut. To protect your workspace, place the hat on a self-healing cutting mat while you do your thing.
Our triangles were randomly placed. Of course, you can design a sequential pattern to fit your taste and style. Try a single row of same-sized triangles around the brim or alternate between big and small. You can even cut out triangles in one secluded section of the hat, as an accent. It’s totally up to you!
Readers, tell us — what triangle pattern would you cut out? Share your ideas below!
