Watch This Video of Women Sharing the Awkward Story of Their First Period
Forget first kisses and first days of school (even if they did involve circling a “yes” or “no”-type of note and having the entire grade realize you’re taller than all the boys at the welcome pep rally like this editor right here, smh), a girl’s most awkward “first” is hands-down her period. But just like those first two memories, the day you got your period should be a nostalgic moment. That’s the message period-proof undergarment pioneers Dear Kate are promoting with its new confessional video.
Titled “First Time”, the short directed by Mary Harron shows different women each recalling their first flow. Some were shockingly unexpected (“My immediate thought was, oh sh*t, this is where I’m gonna die!”) while some seemed willed into existence, like being the first of your friends to get it was like winning a competition. Some were naively mistaken for something else (“Huh, how did melted candy get into my underwear?”) and some were met with over-supportive reactions from parents (think: a high five from dad. Ughhhh daaaad!). All in all, they’re LOL-able tween tales every woman can relate to.
“Our goal with the film is to reframe the moment of getting your period so it’s just as talked about and has just as much cachet as the time you first had sex, if not more,” Dear Kate founder and CEO Julie Sygiel said in an email statement. Look no further than Instagram to see that menstrual blood is still considered a major societal taboo, and Dear Kate seem like the natural champion to combat this troublesome label. They want to get you talking too: Join in the convo by recording your #FirstTimeFilm story and maybe make that faithful day a little more empowering for girls in the future.
