Demi Lovato’s Take on Her Relationship With Wilmer Valderamma Will Break Your Heart
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama broke our collective hearts earlier this year when they announced that they would be parting ways after six years together.
While they released a joint statement saying that they’d still be friends, they never really gave a reason for their split (and really, they didn’t owe us one).
But still, we were curious — why did the twosome that everyone had pegged to be the next to walk down the altar suddenly up and call it quits?
Demi’s latest interview with Glamour is offering up some insight into that very thing. Though the piece was largely explosive thanks to her comments on Taylor Swift’s girl squad and their body types, a more thorough read sees Demi also speaking out about the reasoning behind their decision to end the relationship.
“I think it’s healthy to be able to start over with someone else. Being sick was always a part of my relationship with him; I always had something wrong with me,” she says, referring to her struggles with bulimia, self-harm and addiction.
Though she’s publicly gone as far as to credit Wilmer with saving her life, she adds, “I needed to let go of that. It was hard to depart from somebody who saw everything, but it may be nice to start fresh with somebody. Because that person that I was when I was a lot younger is not who I am today.”
We guess we can kind of see where she’s coming from. Just 23 at the time of the split, Demi would have been 17 years old when she fell for Wilmer — a pretty transformative time in a woman’s life. Though she still makes plenty missteps today (we’re still cringing over that Zika apology), she’s likely come light-years from the person she was then, and we imagine it had to shake up the relationship quite a bit.
Alas, c’est la vie!
Here’s to wishing them both plenty of love in the future (and present!).
