The New ‘Dirty Dancing’ Trailer Is Here: Discuss
Remakes of classic movies walk a very fine line between homage and desecration. No pressure to those folks behind the new version of Dirty Dancing. Ever since pics from the musical were released, we knew fans would have a love/hate relationship with it. Now that the trailer for ABC’s remake has been released, we’re getting a glimpse of what to expect come May 24.
The TV version is set to star the lovely Abigail Breslin as Baby, and Colt Prattes as her Catskills dance instructor Johnny Castle. (Of course, Patrick Swayze’s dancing shoes will be tough to fill). A ton of other incredible performers, including Debra Messing and Sarah Hyland, will make appearances as well. The TV version builds on its 1984 predecessor, tackling issues of race, class, and sexism, against the backdrop of a 1960’s resort in upstate New York.
As the first promo suggests, the lift scene is as crucial as it ever was. And even in 2017, “nobody puts Baby in a corner.” With Hamilton choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler on board for the project, the dancing is bound to be a bit modernized. Prepare for “a musical for a new era,” as the trailer’s voiceover suggests.
So far, reactions on Facebook have ranged from “have to see this” to “all kinds of wrong.”
We’ll reserve our opinions for the air date—which happens to be exactly one month away. Regardless of whether it holds up, we’ll be tuning in and singing along. Obviously.
So, what’s your take on the new Dirty Dancing musical? We want to hear it @BritandCo!
