Light It Up on Memorial Day With These Ombre Mason Jar Candle Holders
Have you made plans for the Memorial Day weekend yet? If you’re playing party hostess or planning a BBQ, you’ll need some mood lighting. We’ve got you covered with patriotic candle holders made from mason jars and just a couple of stickers. With the star spangled banner as our inspiration, we made an ombre red jar with stripes, an ombre blue jar with stars and threw in an ombre white jar to tie it together. This DIY project is fast and easy, so you can get back to enjoying the long weekend with friends and family.
Materials and Tools:
— mason jars
— spray paint, (red, blue and white)
— masking tape (1/4 inch)
— star stickers
Instructions:
1. Be sure the mason jar is clean so paint can stick to its surface.
2. Apply star stickers in a row on the jar, leaving about one centimeter between each sticker. Make sure the edges of the stickers are sealed tightly against the jar.
3. Stand the jar with the lid down on a throw-away surface. Apply spray paint in thin even layers starting from the “top” (the bottom of the jar). Move the spray can from side to side, not up and down.
4. To add more paint to the lighter part of the jar while keeping it ombre, hold the spray can further away from the jar and spray. Allow paint to dry for about 10 minutes.
5. Gently peel off the star stickers, making sure not to scrape the paint off the jar.
6. Add white rice and a candle to finish the look!
Before you begin, make sure the mason jar is clean so paint can stick to its surface. Apply star stickers in a row on the jar, leaving about one centimeter between each sticker. You don’t have to measure it — it’s pretty easy to eyeball and adjust the sticker if you need to. Make sure the edges of the stickers are sealed tightly against the jar. You don’t want paint to get underneath them!
Stand the jar with the lid down on a throw-away surface. Now we’ll apply spray paint in thin even layers starting from the “top” (the bottom of the jar). Move the spray can from side to side, not up and down.
While painting the “top” of the jar, you will find that the paint will naturally spray down in an ombre effect. You may want to add more paint to even out the lighter part of the jar. To do this, hold the spray can further away from the jar and spray. Pro- tip: the closer you hold the spray can to the jar, the darker the paint will be. Allow the paint to dry for about 10 minutes.
Gently peel off the star stickers, making sure not to scrape the paint off the jar. Add white rice and a candle to finish the look!
Red, white and blue!
