DIY Wall Art That Looks Professional
When we’re presented with a space that is pretty much a blank canvas, one of the first things we look for is wall art. Every room can use a large, colorful statement piece to establish a palette that will tie in all the colors of the decor. Unfortunately, we don’t always have the budget to purchase original art. But for those of us who are makers as much as we are collectors, wall art is a doable project to DIY. Here are 100 creative DIY wall art ideas to decorate your space. And here are 50 more creative ideas for things you can make that would look good hanging on the wall.
If you are craving a fairly large abstract canvas to, say, hang over a sofa or bed, Mandi over at A Beautiful Mess has a step by step tutorial for creating your own abstract art, using a pre-stretched and primed canvas from an art supply store. She breaks the process down into easy-to-follow steps with photos at each step.
You will want to use heavy-weight acrylic paints in complimentary hues and do a good bit of custom blending to arrive at a harmonious composition of colors. You’ll apply the paint thickly, using a variety of spatulas and brushes. You’ll need a large piece of cardboard or other firm board to serve as a palette where you can mix your paints. Vary the thickness of the paints by watering down some more than others to achieve a varied texture, and adjust the colors as you go.
After her painting dried, Mandi framed her canvas in a wood frame to give it a professional gallery look.
