This Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe Just Calls for 2 Simple Ingredients
Did you know that you can make the most amazing pizza dough with just two ingredients? Sound too good to be true? Perhaps, but after you try this fun food hack, you’ll forget all about delivery and want to make these every time you’re craving a slice. Plus you can top it with anything you’d like, so you might as well experiment with some interesting combos while you’re at it!
Here’s how it works. To make the dough, combine 1 cup of Greek yogurt and 1 1/2 cups of self-rising flour. For those of you who haven’t worked with self-rising flour before, it’s a pretty magical ingredient. It’s similar to regular all-purpose flours, but it has leavening agents (i.e. baking powder and salt) already added into the mix and very evenly distributed so you won’t get any clumps or pockets in your baked goods. If you don’t have self-rising flour, don’t fret. You can make your own with 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour mixed with 1 3/4 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
The leaveners in self-rising flour need an acid to work. Think about those volcano experiments you did with baking soda and vinegar where everything foamed up. That’s kind of what’s happening here and that’s also where the yogurt comes in. Not only does the yogurt have active cultures to activate the baking powder, but it also brings in the liquid component to form the dough.
Mix the two together and continue to knead the dough for about 3-4 minutes, or until it’s no longer sticky and holds together. Then roll it out into either one big pizza, or quarter it to make four individual pizzas. Top them with pizza sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings. For individual-sized pizzas I used roughly 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce, an ounce of shredded Parmesan, 3 Ciliegine (the small-sized) mozzarella balls cut in half, and a few sage leaves. Be careful to not overload your pizza with too many toppings. And then for the final step make sure to brush any exposed dough with an egg wash so it gets nice and browned.
Now with any good pizza, the trick is to bake it at very high temperatures. The heat activates the leavening agents, causing the dough to rise quickly, and the high temperature gets the outside crisp while keeping the inside tender. So pre-heat your oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and then bake your pizzas for 6-8 minutes.
Serve it with a nice glass of wine for the perfect date night, girls’ night in, or simple weeknight dinner.
